• K-12 and Cloud considerations

  Much like every other Public Sector organization, school districts in the US and Canada are under tremendous pressure to deliver consistent and modern services while operating with reduced budgets, IT personnel shortages, and staff attrition.  Electronic/remote learning and the need for immediate access to resources such as grades, calendars, curricula etc. are straining IT environments that were already burdened with meeting privacy requirements imposed by both regulators and parents/students.  One area viewed as a solution to at least some of the challenges is the use of "Cloud" in education.  Although the concept of "Cloud" is nothing new in education with many providers supplying educational material over the web, school districts defer previously-in-house-hosted services to established commercial vendors to accommodate document sharing, app hosting, and even e-mail.  Doing so, however, does not reduce an important risk, that of privacy.  As always, Cloud implementations are viewed in a skeptical manner because of the perceived reduction in sensitive data management and protection thereof, although with a careful approach and the right tooling, the benefits realized by Clouds can expand to security and privacy.   Oracle's comprehensive approach to data privacy and identity management ensures that the necessary tools are available to support regulations, operational efficiencies and strong security regardless of where the sensitive data is stored - on premise or a Cloud.  Common management tools, role-based access controls, access policy management and engineered systems provided by Oracle can be the foundational pieces on which school districts can build their Cloud implementations without having to worry about security itself. Their biggest challenge, and it is a positive one, is how to best take advantage of Oracle's DB Security and IDM functionality to reduce operational costs while enabling modern applications and data delivery to those who needs access to it.   This year I had the pleasure again of being one of the speakers in the TDC ("The Developers Conference") event. I have spoken in this event for three years from now. This year, the main theme of the SOA track was EDA ("Event-Driven Architecture") and I decided to delivery a comprehensive presentation about one of my preferred personal subjects: Real-time using Complex Event Processing. The theme of the presentation was "Business Intelligence in Real-time using CEP & BAM" and I would like to share here the presentation that I have done. The material is in Portuguese since was an Brazilian event that happened in São Paulo. Once my presentation has a lot of videos, I decided to share the material as a Youtube video, so you can pause, rewind and play again how many times you want it. I strongly recommend you that before starting watching the video, you change the video quality settings to 1080p in High Definition.

• AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 Now Available!!

  We are happy to announce that AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is now available via the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud.   AutoVue for Agile 20.2.2 is a minor release within the 20.2 product family that is specifically targeted for users of Agile PLM 9. AutoVue 20.2.2 brings a number of improvements, including support for SolidWorks 2013, AutoCAD and Inventor 2014, SolidEdge ST5, and Cadence Allegro 16.6.   It also includes support for Adobe Illustrator CS4 and up.   Another improvement involves bringing our support for Oracle Linux and Java Virtual Machine versions in-line with Agile's support. Please see our previous post (https://blogs.oracle.com/enterprisevisualization/entry/autovue_20_2_2_is) for more details on the specifics introduced in AutoVue 20.2.2. Agile PLM 9.3.3 has also been released, which as part of its many improvements introduces support for associating AutoVue annotations with change request objects in Agile, and a preliminary solution using Augmented Business Visualization to allow the creation of change objects from within AutoVue.   Please see the Agile Transfer of Information sessions in the KM note 1589164.1 for more details. • Small, fast shopping cart setup

  I'm looking for an open source shopping cart solution that's simple and easy to setup. The requirements are: Quick setup for someone familiar with *nix webservers. Checkout via PayPal (other payment methods not needed). Customers should not have to create an account to make a purchase. At least a minimal level of inventory control. Ability to print/export a list of orders in compact form. Any recommendations for something I should try? Ability to get it up and working quickly is really my priority right now; if it's not ideal, it can be replaced (or, as I'm looking for open source, I can adapt it to fit the requirements better) at a later time. Edit: Really what I'm looking for is simplicity. This will be for a small local business, and the orders will consist of 1-10 items that are being delivered by a driver who needs a simple list of what each customer received when making delivery. Looking like a giant online computer/electronics/etc. store is definitely not a desirable quality. The simpler the interface presented to customers (who are used to purchasing through dumb web forms and paying COD), the better.

• Can an internally developed fast evolving, agile, short sprint web application lend itself to offshoring?

  I have recently been set a target to achieve readiness to successfully manage and deliver results through the usage of offshore teams on our mainline development project within 12 months. Our mainline is a multi-thousand user highly available web application, and various related SAAS components delivered through the above mentioned web application. We work agile on the mainline with a rapid 1 week sprint using continuous integration. Our delivery platform is a bespoke php framework, although we have some .net services and components in the mix. My view is: an offshore team could work if we either ship out an entire isolated project for offshore development, or we specify a component for our system in huge detail up front. But we don't currently work like that, and it will conflict with the in-house method, and unless the off-shore is working within our team, with our development/deployment chain it could be an integration nightmare. So my question is, given we have a closed source bespoke framework (Private IP) which we train our developers to use, and we work agile minimising documentation, maximising communication and responding to rapidly changing requirements, and much of the quality control is via team skills building and peer review, how can I make off-shoring work on our main line development?

• Discovering Your Project

  The discovery phase of any project is both exciting and critical to the project’s success.  There are several key points that you need to keep in mind as you navigate this process. The first thing you need to understand is who the players in the project are and what their motivations are for the project.  Leaving out a key stakeholder in the resulting product is one of the easiest ways to doom your project to fail.  The better the quality of the input you have at this early phase the better chance you will have of creating a well accepted deliverable. The next task you should tackle is to gather the goals for the project.  Specifically, what does the company expect to get for the money they are about to layout.  This seems like a common sense task, but you would be surprised how many teams to straight to building the system.  Even if you are following an agile methodology I believe that this is critical. Inventorying the resources that already exists gives you an idea what you are going to have to build and what you can leverage at lower risk.  This list should include documentation, servers, code repositories, databases, languages, security systems and supporting teams.  All of these are “resources” that can effect the cost and delivery schedule of your project. Finally, you need to verify what you have found and documented with the stakeholders and subject matter experts.  Documentation that has not been reviewed is actually a list of assumptions and we all know that assumptions are the mother of all screw ups. If you give the discovery phase of your project the attention that it deserves your project has a much better chance of success. • Learning Programming during the job?

  Introduction: I have read and heard advice, about learning programming by accepting programming projects. I need real assistance to understand this, because: Problem: Although, it would seem to me that one would gain much more technical knowledge by doing, real world projects, if one doesn't know much about a technology, it would add much more risk to the actual delivery of the final product! Even the smallest of real world projects could be too much for a newbie. There is a contradiction here: You need to know the job to do it! and It's recommended to do the job, in order to learn it! Question: Any personal experiences in this case would be very pleasant to know while describing: How new was the subject to you? didn't have a clue at all? Or, did you have experience with similar technologies? Was it a solo project or were you in a team? If team, then did others help you with learning it? Did it work as expected? Did you deliver on time? Do you recommend this approach to others as well?

• Freescale One Box Unboxing (then installing Java SE Embedded technology)

  So, I get a FedEx delivery the other day... "What cool device could be inside this FedEx Overnight Express Large Box?" I was wondering... Could it be a new Linux/ARM target device board, faster than a Raspberry Pi and better than a BeagleBone Black??? Why, yes! Yes, it was a Linux/ARM target device board, faster than anything around! It was a Freescale i.MX6 Sabre Smart Device Board (SDB)! Cool... Quad Core ARM Cortex A9 1GHz with 1GB of RAM. So, cool... I installed the Freescale One Box OpenWRT Linux image onto its SD card and booted it up into Linux. But, wait! One thing was missing... What was it? What could be missing? Why, it had no Java SE Embedded installed on it yet, of course! So, I went to the JDK 7u45 download link. Clicked on "Accept License Agreement", and clicked on "jdk-7u45-linux-arm-vfp-sflt.tar.gz", installed the bad boy, and all was good. Java SE Embedded 7u45 on a Freescale One Box. Nice... Hinkmond

• Oracle Solutions supporting ICAM deployments

• Slap the App on the VM for every private cloud solution! Really ?

  One of the key attractions of the general session "Managing Enterprise Private Cloud" at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 was an interactive role play depicting how to address some of the key challenges of planning, deploying and managing an enterprise private cloud. It was a face-off between Don DeVM, IT manager at a fictitious enterprise 'Vulcan' and Ed Muntz, the Enterprise Manager hero .   Don DeVM is really excited about the efficiency and cost savings from virtualization. The success he enjoyed from the infrastructure virtualization made him believe that for all cloud service delivery models ( database, testing or applications as-a-service ), he has a single solution - slap the app on the VM and here you go . However, Ed Muntz believes in delivering cloud services that allows the business units and enterprise users to manage the complete lifecycle of the cloud services they are providing, for example, setting up cloud, provisioning it to users through a self-service portal ,  managing and tuning the performance, monitoring and applying patches for database or applications. • Capturing BizTalk 2004 SQLAdapter failures

  I was recently working on a BizTalk 2004 project where I encountered an issue with capturing exceptions (inside my orchestration) occurring from an external source. Like database server down, non-existing stored procedure, …   I thought I might write-up this in case it might help someone …   To reproduce an issue, I just rename the database to something different.   The orchestration was failing at the point where I make a SQL request via a Response-Request Port. The exception handlers were bypassed but I can see a warning in the event log saying: "The adapter failed to transmit message going to send port "   After scratching my head for a while (as a newbie to BTS 2004) to find a way to catch the exceptions from the SQLAdapter in an orchestration, here is the solution I had.   ·         Put the Send and Receive shapes inside a Scope shape ·         Set the Scope’s transaction type to “Long Running” ·         Add a Catch block expecting type “System.Exception” ·         Set the “Delivery Notification” of the associated Port to “Transmitted” ·         Change the “Retry Count” of the associated port to 0 (This will make sure BizTalk will raise the exception, instead of a warning, and you can capture that) ·         Now capture and do whatever with the exception inside the Catch block
