  • How to index small words (3 letters) with SQL Full-text search?

    I have an Incident table with one row that has the value 'out of office' in the Description column. However the following query does not return that row. SELECT * FROM Incident WHERE CONTAINS( (Incident.Description), '"out*"' ) The word 'out' is not in the noise file (I cleared the noise file completely). Is it because SQL Full-text search does not index small words? Is there a setting for that? Note: I'm on SQL 2005.

  • Word 2010 not printing body text on pages with images

    I've got a document exhibiting bizarre behavior -- when I print, the body text style is only displayed on pages without images. Headings, header and footer, and captions are printing on the page, along with any graphics such as border styles applied to the style, but the text itself doesn't print -- except for en dashes. The text is pretty basic -- a justified Calibri style. Images are their own style, a centered paragraph item. There's no floating image boxes or text boxes going on, everything's a paragraph style. It's not a print driver issue. I get identical behavior on both a HP and Brother laser printer. It's also not a paragraph-level style issue; I've inserted enough dummy text to move a printing paragraph on a page with no images to the next page, which has an image, and the paragraph does not print on the next page. Has anyone run into an issue like this and knows the solution?

    I use MS Outlook as email client. When I receive email from certain email addresses(sender within my company/domain itself), and I use the reply button option to reply it, all the menus like - Font type, Font size, Text color, Bold, Italics, Text indentation, Bullets, numbering, are disabled. It doesn't allow me to use any of the above features. This happens only for some email id's where I receive mail from. Not all. Then when I checked in the message properties, it was Plain Text , rather than HTML. But shouldn't outlook allow me the formatting of the messages I reply/compose based on My settings which are HTML? How can I enable to have Rich text formatting enabled while I reply to a text mail?

    Possible Duplicate: How do I tell Thunderbird never to send (or even try to send) html emails? In the account settings of Thunderbird (version 11.0.1) I have disabled HTML and set it to compose messages as plain text. That works for new messages. However, when I get an HTML email and reply to that mail, Thunderbird uses HTML. I went to the setting in: Tools ? Options ? Composition ? Send Options ? Plain Text Domains And have tried *.* as the domain name. I also changed the default text format in Settings - Compose - Send options. Neither of them works, the reply is still using HTML (for my own text). How can I really reply in plain text only, regardless of incoming?

  • 'Content' is NOT 'Text' in XAML

    One of the key concepts in XAML is that the Content property of a XAML control like a Button or ComboBoxItem does not have to contain just textual data. In fact, Content can be almost any other XAML that you want. To illustrate here is a simple example of how to spruce up your Button controls in Silverlight. Here is some very simple XAML that consists of two Button controls within a StackPanel on a Silverlight User Control. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          HorizontalAlignment="Left"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> The XAML listed above will produce a Silverlight control within a Browser that looks like Figure 1.   Figure 1: Normal button controls are quite boring. With just a little bit of refactoring to move the button attributes into Styles, we can make the buttons look a little better. I am a big believer in Styles, so I typically create a Resources section within my user control where I can factor out the common attribute settings for a particular set of controls. Here is a Resources section that I added to my Silverlight user control. <UserControl.Resources>  <Style TargetType="Button"         x:Key="NormalButton">    <Setter Property="HorizontalAlignment"            Value="Left" />    <Setter Property="MinWidth"            Value="50" />    <Setter Property="Margin"            Value="10" />  </Style></UserControl.Resources> Now back in the XAML within the Grid control I update the Button controls to use the Style attribute and have each button use the Static Resource called NormalButton. <StackPanel>  <Button Name="btnHome"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Home" />  <Button Name="btnLog"          Style="{StaticResource NormalButton}"          Content="Logs" /></StackPanel> With the additional attributes set in the Resources section on the Button, the above XAML will now display the two buttons as shown in Figure 2. Figure 2: Use Resources to Make Buttons More Consistent Now let’s re-design these buttons even more. Instead of using words for each button, let’s replace the Content property to use a picture. As they say… a picture is worth a thousand words, so let’s take advantage of that. Modify each of the Button controls and eliminate the Content attribute and instead, insert an <Image> control with the <Button> and the </Button> tags. Summary While this is a simple example, you can see how XAML Content has great flexibility. You could add a MediaElement control as the content of a Button and play a video within the Button. Not that you would necessarily do this, but it does work. What is nice about adding different content within the Button control is you still get the Click event and other attributes of a button, but it does necessarily look like a normal button.   • Perl, share package variable without Export

    I'm creating a group of Perl scripts, and I would like to have one package store a group of constants. I don't want to export them using Exporter because there will be quite a few and I don't want to pollute the namespace. Since there will be so many, I don't want to require the user to be forced to manually specify which they will be using. I think the best way to just use the packagename::var syntax, however it doesn't seem to be working as I expect it to.   • Matplotlib PDF export uses wrong font

    I want to generate high-quality diagrams for a presentation. I’m using Python’s matplotlib to generate the graphics. Unfortunately, the PDF export seems to ignore my font settings. I tried setting the font both by passing a FontProperties object to the text drawing functions and by setting the option globally. For the record, here is a MWE to reproduce the problem: import scipy import matplotlib matplotlib.use('cairo') import matplotlib.pylab as pylab import matplotlib.font_manager as fm data = scipy.arange(5) for font in ['Helvetica', 'Gill Sans']: fig = pylab.figure() ax = fig.add_subplot(111) ax.bar(data, data) ax.set_xticks(data) ax.set_xticklabels(data, fontproperties = fm.FontProperties(family = font)) pylab.savefig('foo-%s.pdf' % font) In both cases, the produced output is identical and uses Helvetica (and yes, I do have both fonts installed). Just to be sure, the following doesn’t help either: matplotlib.rc('font', family = 'Gill Sans') Finally, if I replace the backend, instead using the native viewer: matplotlib.use('MacOSX') I do get the correct font displayed – but only in the viewer GUI. The PDF output is once again wrong. To be sure – I can set other fonts – but only other classes of font families: I can set serif fonts or fantasy or monospace. But all sans-serif fonts seem to default to Helvetica.

  • SVN checkout or export for production environment?

    In a project I am working on, we have an ongoing discussion amongst the dev team - should the production environment be deployed as a checkout from the SVN repository or as an export? The development environment is obviously a checkout, since it is constantly updated. For the production, I'm personally for checking out the main trunk, since it makes future updates easier (just run svn update). However some of the devs are against it, as svn creates files with the group/owner and permissions of the svn process (this is on a linux OS, so those things matter), and also having the .svn directories on the production seem to them to be somewhat dirty. Also, if it is a checkout - how do you push individual features to the production without including in-development code? do you use tags or branch out for each feature? any alternatives? EDIT: I might not have been clear - one of the requirement is to be able to constantly be able to push fixes to the production environment. We want to avoid a complete build (which takes much longer than a simple update) just for pushing critical fixes.

  • How to export Oracle statistics

    Hi, I am writing some new SQL queries and want to check the query plans that the Oracle query optimiser would come up with in production. My development database doesn't have anything like the data volumes of the production database. How can I export database statistics from a production database and re-import them into a development database? I don't have access to the production database, so I can't simply generate explain plans on production without going through a third party hosting organisation. This is painful. So I want a local database which is in some way representative of production on which I can try out different things. Also, this is for a legacy application. I'd like to "improve" the schema, by adding appropriate indexes. constraints, etc. I need to do this in my development database first, before rolling out to test and production. If I add an index and re-generate statistics in development, then the statistics will be generated around the development data volumes, which makes it difficult to assess the impact my changes on production. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this? Or is it just a case of fixing unexpected behaviour once we've discovered it on production? I do have a staging database with production volumes, but again I have to go through a third party to run queries against this, which is painful. So I'm looking for ways to cut out the middle man as much as possible. All this is using Oracle 9i. Thanks.

  • Export sheet from Excel to CSV

    I am creating a spread sheet to help ease the entry of data into one of our systems. They are entering inventory items into this spread sheet to calculate the unit cost of the item (item cost + tax + S&H). The software we purchased cannot do this. Aan invoice can have one or more lines (duh!) and I calculate the final unit cost. This is working fine. I then want to take that data and create a CSV from that so they can load it into our inventory system. I currently have a second tab that is laid out like I want the CSV, and I do an equal cell (=Sheet!A3) to get the values on the "export sheet". The problem is when they save this to a CSV, there are many blank lines that need to be deleted before they can upload it. I want a file that only contains the data that is needed. I am sure this could be done in VBA, but I don't know where to start or know how to search for an example to start. Any direction or other options would be appreciated.

Basically I want the NotificationService, to receive a Unique ID provided by the importing class, whenever it is created and composed to a new class, or if there's and alternative method, like using meta data to do this I'd appreciate any insights.     Hi all, I have been attemptng to create a DLL with C/C++ that can be accessed by VB6, and that's right I get error "453 Can't find DLL entry point myFunctionName in myDllName.dll" upon calling the function from a VB6 app. After searching the Web, including this site, I see that I am not alone, and I have tried the various solutions posted but error "453" is unexcapable. This is Not a COMM dll, and I believe that is possible when created via C/C++. In any case, please help, if you can.   • When is it ever ok to write your own development tools? (editor into IDE)

    So I'm foremost using a text editor for coding. It's a very bare bones editor; provides mostly just syntax highlighting. But on rare occasions I also need to debug something. And that's when I have to resort to an IDE (mostly Netbeans, but got fiddly Eclipse/Aptana working as second fallback). For general use however IDEs feel not workable to me. It's a visual thing, being used to console UIs etc. And switching back and forth between a text editor and an IDE is slightly cumbersome too. That's why I'm considering extending the editor, not really into a full-fledged IDE - but at the very least integrate a debug feature. Since I'm working on PHP, it seems not that much effort. The DBGp allows to externalize a debug handler from the editor, so it's just minor integration work and figuring out how to shoehorn a breakpoint feature into the editor (joe btw). And while I've also got time to do that, I'm wondering if this is really worthwhile. In this case it's not a needed development tool. It's just for convenience. And the cause for doing it is basically just not liking the existing solution. While over time I might extend and adapt this debugger thing, it initially will be as circumstantial as Eclipse. It inevitably starts out as poor development tool. Furthermore there is likely not much reuse. (Okay, this is not an important point. Most such software exists sans much of a use case. And also obviously, similar extensions already exist for emacs and vim, so it cannot be completely pointless.) But what's a general guideline on attempting to conoct custom development tools, particularily if they are not really needed but satisfy personal preferences? (Usability enhancement not certain.)

  • Is it worth replacing mouse by standalone trackpad for heavy code-editing? [on hold]

    I recently got more interested in improving my tools, workspace and worflow. The first sting came with a sore finger due to a crappy keyboard, and then after some research I fell in love with the "mechanical keyboard is what you need" doctrine, bought one (cherry MX Brown if you're curious), and am very happy with the results. Currently I am replacing my previous text editor (Geany) with Sublime Text 3, and am also very happy and feeling much more powerful and professional :) Well, but while I re-read all the ancient debates about VIM vs whatever-else, the following excerpt from a blog post got me thinking again about the mouse vs keyboard, and the "moving around from the very home row" (in VIM) versus gesturing away with the tiny and unstable mouse cursor: Reaching for a mouse may indeed slow you down, but developers are commonly on machines where the trackpad is a micro-hand movement away. Most novice programmers can click on a character on screen faster than an expert Vimmer can type 20jFp; or LkEEE or /word or any other nasty way Vimmers have to use. The point of a mouse is to make arbitrary on screen jumps efficient, and it’s very good at doing that. Don’t you ever think you can beat a mouse. Well, although there is some bitterness in this statement, it makes a lot of sense, and EVEN MORE if you consider your direct input to be a TRACKPAD conveniently placed in front of your spacebar (which oddly is where I like to put my mouse, rotated 90° ccw, due to a serious tendonitis in my right shoulder, already healed, but you knod...). So, the question is: Has anyone replaced mouse by a standalone trackpad, to work in code editing in a desktop machine (that is, with a sandalone keyboard)? Was it worth the change?

    Hi, I want to implement a system that receives speech through a microphone on my Mac OS x. I know arbitrary speech recognition is close to impossible without training the system so I'm willing to restrict it to 10 simple sentences. It must recognize with a high degree of accuracy which of these 10 sentences are being spoken, generate the text and add an entry to a remote MySQL database. With these being the architecture of the system I want to implement, could anyone give me an overview of what would be the best way to go about implementing this system? I'm looking for ideas like open source libraries to minimize the coding as this is just a prototype application for a demonstration. Basically I'm looking for a quick and easy solution. Thanks!

  • How can I get the dimensions of a drawn string without padding?

    I'm trying to create an image with some text on it and I want the image's size to match the size of the rendered text. When I use System.Windows.Forms.TextRenderer.MeasureText(...) to measure the text, I get dimensions that include font padding. When the text is rendered, it seems to use the same padding. Is there any way to determine the size of a string of text and then render it without any padding? This is the code I've tried: // Measure the text dimensions var text = "Hello World"; var fontFamily = new Font("Arial", 30, FontStyle.Regular); var textColor = new SolidBrush(Color.Black); Size textSize = TextRenderer.MeasureText(text, fontFamily, Size.Empty, TextFormatFlags.NoPadding); // Render the text with the given dimensions Bitmap bmp = new Bitmap(textSize.Width, textSize.Height); Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(bmp); g.TextRenderingHint = TextRenderingHint.AntiAliasGridFit; g.DrawString(text, fontFamily, textColor, new PointF(0, 0)); bmp.Save("output.png", ImageFormat.Png); This is what currently gets rendered out: This is what I want to render: I also looked into Graphics.MeasureString(...), but that can only be used on an existing Graphics object.   • Is 'second' a keyword in mysql full-text searches?

    I have a simple MySQL table that is setup for full text search. | id | title | ---------------------- | 1 | test event | | 2 | Second test | | 3 | Larry's event | | 4 | this second | When I use the query: SELECT * FROM EVENTS WHERE MATCH (title) AGAINST ('test event' IN BOOLEAN MODE); I get back 3 rows; the ones containing 'test event', 'Second test', and 'Larry's Event'. Now If I run the following query: SELECT * FROM EVENTS WHERE MATCH (title) AGAINST ('second' IN BOOLEAN MODE); Nothing is returned... strange? Lastly, if I run the query: SELECT * FROM EVENTS WHERE MATCH (title) AGAINST ('second test' IN BOOLEAN MODE); I get back 2 rows; the ones containing 'test event' and 'Second test'. I appears that the word 'second' cannot be searched or needs to be escaped somehow. Am I missing something?
