• PPA Shows Up Under "All Software" That Is No Longer Enabled

  I used to use the Aurora builds of Firefox, but now I've uninstalled Firefox and gone back to Chromium. I've removed the PPA, but it still shows up under "All Software" in the Ubuntu Software Center, when I click on the arrow to the side of it to display my PPAs. I've checked the Software Sources to see if there's anything leftover, and there's nothing. I use Y PPA Manager, and there's nothing there to remove as well. How do I get rid of it?

  I am trying to get emacs-like keybindings in gtk, firefox, chrome, etc. I have followed the directions recommended here (and in lots of places) but to no effect: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Emacs_Keybindings_(Firefox) In other words, I added 'gtk-key-theme-name = "Emacs"' to my .gtkrc-2.0, and I also ran gconf-editor and set "/desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_key_theme" to "Emacs". I even rebooted just for good measure. I am using an ordinary Ubuntu 12.04 install, with unity3d as the desktop environment. Thanks! Sam

Yet i realize that in comparison to other pieces of software that have an "Ubuntu/Debian" version (.deb file, and usually .rpm files as well), i don't see it in one of the most profound assets of the FLOSS world.   Firefox keeps crashing the whole time on my Lubuntu 12.04 since version 12, I don't know why, I am running it on a Pentium IV desktop so might be CPU shortage, however I use the same set of extensions and configurations that I have on Windows' Firefox and it rarely crashes, runs smoothly and besides on Windows it can handle much more tabs opened before some freeze actually happens. Chromium is working better so far on Lubuntu, but I really do miss the Tab Groups Firefox feature, which is great to group tabs and organize them, it really is a boost on my productivity. Are you aware of any add-on which is similar for Chrome/Chromium? I've searched around on Chrome's Web Store but no luck at the moment.

  Well this is a really weird issue, I really didn't find anything on this elsewhere so I thought I'd address it here. Say I have an "image.jpg" and accidentally reference it in the CSS like so: url(imag.jpg) Note the missing "e". Now for me, Firefox is so incredibly clever that it will still find the correct image, but NOT SPIT OUT A WARNING. So I assume that everything is ok. But later, when I test the page in any other browser, all of a sudden the image doesn't display (and rightly so). That's because Firefox thought it was a good idea to correct my error without telling me. This becomes more critical with scripts. Firefox will also auto-correct a typo in a reference. I just wasted a whole hour scratching my head and trying to debug an ajax function in Webkit - turns out, I just had a typo where I included the file. Why on earth does Firefox do this without telling, and where the heck can I turn this off? This has first occured somewhere around FF 3.0 and still persists in 3.6.3. /rant an thank fo any inpu ;)

• If ssh connection fails using SOCKS then what? Automate switch to no proxy?

  Right now I am using plink in a batch routine that reconnects to my SSH server if I loose connection. I use my plink connection & socks proxy (firefox) to forward all my browser traffic. Works great EXCEPT for one thing! If I can't get to my ssh server for some ODD reason I have to go to options in firefox and revert back my settings to NO Proxy. It can be done, but its annoying! So how would I keep my SOCKS Proxy connection in firefox, but if I cant connect to my SSH Server, how can I automatically switch to the autodetect proxy/no proxy settings in firefox? I would think that I could use the Firefox command line arguments and a batch routine to do so, but I do not believe this is possible. I have written this, but it only checks for Firefox in /Applications /bin/cat /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Info.plist | grep -A 1 CFBundleShortVersionString | grep string | sed 's/[/]//' | sed 's/<string>//g' For standard users Firefox auto update breaks if it is in /Applications so I instead have it installed in ~/Applications I'd like to check that copy (if it exists), but I can't specify the path in the command since it is unique to each computer. For example: /Users/jon/Applications/Firefox.app /Users/arya/Applications/Firefox.app Presumably I want to use find and pipe the result to my command. This should work for 10.6 through 10.8

  I use the window.onerror to alert javascript errors for debugging. window.onerror = function(msg, url, line) { alert(msg + '\nLine: ' + line); }; When an error is fired, it can alert this actual error message in IE. But in firefox, it just alerts "Script error!", but I can still see the actual error message in firefox's error console. I remembered several months ago when I worked on another project, firefox did not work like this. But I cannot get the code of that project currently. So I wonder what are the possible problems with this?

That is, I've got code in a legacy application designed only for Internet Explorer and I need to get it to work in Firefox. For example, I recently worked on an app that made heavy use of manually simulating click events, like this: select.options[0].click(); ...which completely broke the application in Firefox. But you wouldn't find that information in the answers to the other question, because that's not something you'd ever even attempt if your app first targeted Firefox. What other things should a developer updating a legacy IE-only application look for when migrating to modern browsers?

  It’s about time someone took this initiative: Google Chrome OS I especially like the following: Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We’re designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don’t have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work. I recently had the ‘pleasure’ witnessing several 60+ yr old friends and family (all respect for everyone in their 2nd or 3rd youth) buying their first pc, taking their first steps using a pc and the net. Have you ever seen the gazillions of little ‘useful’ tools that are installed on a new standard Vista pc or laptop ? This is like learning to drive a new car and being placed in an airplane cockpit. And all the messages one gets about virus/security checks, fingerprint nog being enrolled, trial period expiring (because half those really useful tools come with a trial period), … If I was in their shoes, being confronted with this as a total newbie, I guess I’d just give up pretty soon. As a matter of fact, I actually gave up on Vista on my work-laptop, it was driving me crazy. Thank god I was allowed to install XP. I’m a Linux user at home, and Vista was such a frustrating experience that Windows XP actually felt like breath of fresh air. And what are those people using? Email, browsing…. and maybe writing a little letter now and then or storing their photo’s if they have a digital camera. Actually (side note), I get the impression that hearing about facebook is a major motivator for the digital newbies to finally take the plunge, buy a pc and get on-line. And OK, we’ve seen initiatives like this before, but Google is a brand everyone knows… unlike Ubuntu, Debain or Mandriva. Google = God. If I was Microsoft I’d be wetting my pants knowing Google was about to release their own OS, without a doubt fully optimized to use their own on-line office suit. On the other hand, the old adage ‘no one ever got fired for choosing Microsoft’ still holds a lot of truth. I hope I’ll be able to give it a big thumbs up if a would-be pc-user asks me what kind of pc/OS they should go for in the near future. On the other hand, if I’d do that, I’m pretty sure a couple of weeks later I’d get a call asking how to install this game or photo editing tool they got from one of their Windows using friends… or that nifty photo-printer they just bought. But then, I also get those questions now from newbie Windows users. It takes a couple of years before Newbie pc users understand that some things just don’t work and aren’t worth the time trying to fix them. I’d just wish they’d go back to the shop when something doesn’t work. You also don’t let you mechanic friend try to fix a problem with your brand new car. But that’s another story… Wait and see…

• Web developing- Strange happenings

  As I'm teaching myself PHP and MySQL during break, I'm experimenting coding in a Ubuntu virtual machine where Apache, MySQL and PHP have been installed and configured to a shared folder. I'm not a big fan of Kompozer because the source code layout is a PIA, so I've started checking out gPHPEdit. However, since using it, I've come across two issues: when I edit the .html and .php files, sometimes the file extension will change to .html~ and .php~, becoming invisible to the browser. The only solution is to switch to Windows, right click and rename the file extension. In Ubuntu Firefox, when I click on my prpject's Submit button for in a practice form, a dialog box pops up asking what Firefox should do with the .php file, rather than simply displaying it in the browser. When I do this in Windows Chrome & Firefox, it goes right to the response page. I'm not sure if this behavior is limited to gPHPEdit/Kompozer, but I've never noticed this happening in Dreamweaver. Any solutions? EDIT The behavior in Point 1 occurs both when Dreamweaver is open in Windows accessing the same files and when it is not. I changed the extension filename of welcome.php, added a comment in gPHPEdit, and the file changed to welcome.php~ upon saving.

  I don't know that it's for the exact same script each time, it may be. A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: chrome://messenger/content/folderPane.js:721 This is in association with Thunderbird I think. This doesn't just happen after I've stepped away for a long time. It happens every time I click on anything. Things keep running that I'm clicking on. Just before this started as a constant problem, I was looking at addons etc, and something in Thunderbird deactivated an old or expired JavaScript. I clicked on the update for that and after a while I found the best choice on the list and clicked download. I don't know that anything happened with that and I moved away from addons etc area. The unresponsive script window started coming back all the time. Every time I clicked on something in Thunderbird and sometimes with Firefox. I turned off Firefox and restarted, but it didn't change. Shut down Firefox and computer restarted didn't change. The unresponsive script window is persistent now.

• ISA Proxy server

  Have a proxy at work that runs Microsoft ISA. i used to be able to connect using 11.10 with firefox no problem at all. i could either put the settings in firefox or the settings in ubuntu network proxy settings. this would give me a connection no problem ( slow due to the work network being really lame) since i upgraded with 12.10 firefox just crashes if i have any proxy settings (manual added the proxy settings). if i connect to a diffrent network without the proxy settings it works fine and doesn't crash i tried chrome to see if that would work... simular problem. chrome doesn't crash but is so slow it just times out all the time and can take 10min for a page to load.... not really sure where to go with this? i have tried a clean install of 12.04 on 2 diffrent computers and also both tried just upgrading from 11.10. Only answer i can see at the moment is role back to 11.10 :( i have tried all sorts like turning of IPv6 to see if that would make any diffrence but no joy... really am lost now. whats weird is the repositys are also really really slow through 12.04. 50 megs took an hour to download (ISA server has Ubuntu rep servers enables without authenication). really am lost

• Using Virtualbox Bridge Networking fails connection from Guest OS to Oracle XE running on Host

  I am trying to make a JDBC connection from a VirtualBox Ubuntu Guest OS to an Oracle XE database running o Host. However, the connection is refused. Here are the details of my environment: VirtualBox: 4.1.4 Host OS: Windows 7 Guest OS: Ubuntu server 11.4 Networking mode: Bridged network Oracle XE database running on Host Issue: WebLogic server runs on the Ubuntu virtualbox. It attempts to connect to an Oracle XE database running on the Host OS (windows 7) with listening port 1521. On the Guest OS (Ubuntu), I am able to ping the Host computer from the Guest OS. However, when I configured a JDBC data source on the WebLogic server on the Guest OS to connect to the Oracle XE, connection took a long time, and eventually I received an "IO Exception: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection". When I tried "telnet host-ip 1521", no connection was established. With Bridge networking, I can make bi-directional connections between the host and the guest OS (e.g. connection through ssh and ftp). Is there anything I missed in the setup of Bridge networking and the guest/host OS? Note that I was able to make the same connection within a normal networking environment (i.e. not using virtual box). I am not sure whether Bridge networking is a good option for the work described above. Should I use host-only networking mode? If so, any specific configurations I need to perform? I read through the Virtual box document on setting up the host-only network, however, it lacks of details. I followed the procedures described in the manual, and couldn't even connect to the host. Could some experts here enlighten me on this issue? Much appreciated. Licheng
