  • Handle order dependence in for loops

    - by Matt
    Hey all, I'm making a templating system where I instantiate each tag using a foreach loop. The issue is that some of the tags rely on each other so, I'm wondering how to get around that ordering from the looping. Here's an example: Class A { public $width; __construct() { $this->width = $B->width(); // Undefined! Or atleast not set yet.. } } Class B { private $width; __construct() { $this->width = "500px"; } __tostring() { return "Hello World!"; } } Template.php $tags = array("A", "B"); foreach ($tags as $tag) { $TagObj[$tag] = new $tag(); } echo $TagObj['A']->width; // Nadamundo! I know this has applications elsewhere and I'm sure this has been solved before, if someone could enlighten me or point me in the right direction that'd be great! Thanks! Matt Mueler

  • ublas::bounded_vector<> being resized?

    - by n2liquid
    Now, seriously... I'll refrain from using bad words here because we're talking about the Boost fellows. It MUST be my mistake to see things this way, but I can't understand why, so I'll ask it here; maybe someone can enlighten me in this matter. Here it goes: uBLAS has this nice class template called bounded_vector<> that's used to create fixed-size vectors (or so I thought). From the Effective uBLAS wiki (http://www.crystalclearsoftware.com/cgi-bin/boost_wiki/wiki.pl?Effective_UBLAS): The default uBLAS vector and matrix types are of variable size. Many linear algebra problems involve vectors with fixed size. 2 and 3 elements are common in geometry! Fixed size storage (akin to C arrays) can be implemented efficiently as it does not involve the overheads (heap management) associated with dynamic storage. uBLAS implements fixed sizes by changing the underling storage of a vector/matrix to a "bounded_array" from the default "unbounded_array". Alright, this bounded_vector<> thing is used to free you from specifying the underlying storage of the vector to a bounded_array<> of the specified size. Here I ask you: doesn't it look like this bounded vector thing has fixed size to you? Well, it doesn't have. At first I felt betrayed by the wiki, but then I reconsidered the meaning of "bounded" and I think I can let it pass. But in case you, like me (I'm still uncertain), is still wondering if this makes sense, what I found out is that the bounded_vector<> actually can be resized, it may only not be greater than the size specified as template parameter. So, first off, do you think they've had a good reason not to make a real fixed<< size vector or matrix type? Do you think it's okay to "sell" this bounded -- as opposed to fixed-size -- vector to the users of my library as a "fixed-size" vector replacement, even named "Vector3" or "Vector2", like the Effective uBLAS wiki did? Do you think I should somehow implement a vector with fixed size for this purpose? If so, how? (Sorry, but I'm really new to uBLAS; just tried it today) I am developing a 3D game. Should uBLAS be used for the calculations involved in this ("hey, geometry!", per Effective uBLAS wiki)? What replacement would you suggest, if not? -- edit And just in case, yes, I've read this warning: It should be noted that this only changes the storage uBLAS uses for the vector3. uBLAS will still use all the same algorithm (which assume a variable size) to manipulate the vector3. In practice this seems to have no negative impact on speed. The above runs just as quickly as a hand crafted vector3 which does not use uBLAS. The only negative impact is that the vector3 always store a "size" member which in this case is redundant [or isn't it? I mean......]. I see it uses the same algorithm, assuming a variable size, but if an operation were to actually change its size, shouldn't it be stopped (assertion)? ublas::bounded_vector<float,3> v3; ublas::bounded_vector<float,2> v2; v3 = v2; std::cout << v3.size() << '\n'; // prints 2 Oh, come on, isn't this just plain betrayal?

  • Why is the W3C box model considered better?

    - by Mel
    Why do most developers consider the W3C box-model to be better than the box-model used by Internet Explorer? I know it's very frustrating developing pages that look the way you want them on Internet Explorer, but I find the W3C box-model to be counter-intuitive. For example, if margins, padding, and border were factored into the width, I could assign fixed width values for all my columns without having to worry about how many columns I have and what changes I make to my padding and margins. Under W3C box model I have to worry about how many columns I have, and develop something akin to a mathematical formula to calculate my values. Changing them would nightmarish, especially for complex layouts. My novice opinion is that it's more restrictive. Consider this small frame-work I wrote: #content { margin:0 auto 30px auto; padding:0 30px 30px 30px; width:900px; } #content .column { float:left; margin:0 20px 20px 20px; } #content .first { margin-left:0; } #content .last { margin-right:0; } .width_1-4 { width:195px; } .width_1-3 { width:273px; } .width_1-2 { width:430px; } .width_3-4 { width:645px; } .width_1-1 { width:900px; } These values I have assigned here will falter unless there are three columns, and thus the margins at 0(first)+20+20+20+20+0(last). It would be a disaster if I wanted to add padding to my columns too, as my entire setup would have to be re calibrated. Now imagine if column width incorporated all the other elements, all I would need to do is change one associated value, and I have my layout. I'm less criticizing it and more hoping to understand why it's better, or why I'm finding it more difficult. Am I doing this whole thing wrong? I don't know very much about this topic, but it seems counter intuitive to use W3C's box-model. Some advice would be really appreciated. Thanks

  • Ruby Built In Method to Create Multidimensional Array From Single Dimensioned Array

    - by Ell
    If I have an array like this: [0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5], is there a built in method to create this: [[0, 1, 2], [3, 4, 5]] given a width of 3? If there is no built in method, how could I improve on this? def multi_to_single(array, width) return [].tap{|md_array| (array.length.to_f / width).ceil.times {|y| row = (array[(y*width), width]) md_array.push( row + Array.new(width - row.length)) } } end I feel like I have missed something obvious because I haven't programmed ruby in a while! Thanks in advance, ell. EDIT: It needs to be in the core library, so no ruby on rails or anything.

  • View bound to paged collection view not updating all of the time.

    - by Thomas
    I new to silverlight and trying to make a business application using the mvvm pattern and ria services. I have a view model class that contains a PagedCollectoinView and it is set to the item source of a datagrid. When I update the PagedCollectionView the datagrid is only updated the first time then after that subsequent changes to the data to not reflect in the view until after another edit. Things seem to be delayed one edit. Below is a summarized example of my xaml and code behind. This is the code for my view model public class CustomerContactLinks : INotifyPropertyChanged { private ObservableCollection<CustomerContactLink> _CustomerContact; public ObservableCollection<CustomerContactLink> CustomerContact { get { if (_CustomerContact == null) _CustomerContact = new ObservableCollection<CustomerContactLink>(); return _CustomerContact; } set { _CustomerContact = value; } } private PagedCollectionView _CustomerContactPaged; public PagedCollectionView CustomerContactPaged { get { if (_CustomerContactPaged == null) _CustomerContactPaged = new PagedCollectionView(CustomerContact); return _CustomerContactPaged; } } private TicketSystemDataContext _ctx; public TicketSystemDataContext ctx { get { if (_ctx == null) _ctx = new TicketSystemDataContext(); return _ctx; } } public void GetAll() { ctx.Load(ctx.GetCustomerContactInfoQuery(), LoadCustomerContactsComplete, null); } private void LoadCustomerContactsComplete(LoadOperation<CustomerContactLink> lo) { foreach (var entity in lo.Entities) { CustomerContact.Add(entity as CustomerContactLink); } } #region INotifyPropertyChanged Members public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged; private void RaisePropertyChanged(string propertyName) { if (PropertyChanged != null) { this.PropertyChanged(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName)); } } #endregion } Here is the basics of my XAML <Data:DataGrid x:Name="GridCustomers" MinHeight="100" MaxWidth="1000" IsReadOnly="True" AutoGenerateColumns="False"> <Data:DataGrid.Columns> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="First Name" Binding="{Binding Customer.FirstName}" Width="105" /> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="MI" Binding="{Binding Customer.MiddleName}" Width="35" /> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Last Name" Binding="{Binding Customer.LastName}" Width="105"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Address1" Binding="{Binding Contact.Address1}" Width="130"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Address2" Binding="{Binding Contact.Address2}" Width="130"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="City" Binding="{Binding Contact.City}" Width="110"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="State" Binding="{Binding Contact.State}" Width="50"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Zip" Binding="{Binding Contact.Zip}" Width="45"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Home" Binding="{Binding Contact.PhoneHome}" Width="85"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Cell" Binding="{Binding Contact.PhoneCell}" Width="85"/> <Data:DataGridTextColumn Header="Email" Binding="{Binding Contact.Email}" Width="118"/> </Data:DataGrid.Columns> </Data:DataGrid> <DataForm:DataForm x:Name="CustomerDetails" Header="Customer Details" AutoGenerateFields="False" AutoEdit="False" AutoCommit="False" CommandButtonsVisibility="Edit" Width="1000" Margin="0,5,0,0"> <DataForm:DataForm.EditTemplate> </DataForm:DataForm.EditTemplate> </DataForm:DataForm> And here is my code behind public Customers() { InitializeComponent(); BusyDialogIndicator.IsBusy = true; Loaded += new RoutedEventHandler(Customers_Loaded); CustomerDetails.BeginningEdit += new EventHandler(CustomerDetails_BeginningEdit); } void CustomerDetails_BeginningEdit(object sender, System.ComponentModel.CancelEventArgs e) { CustomerContacts.CustomerContactPaged.EditItem(CustomerDetails.CurrentItem); } private void Customers_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { CustomerContacts = new CustomerContactLinks(); CustomerContacts.GetAll(); GridCustomers.ItemsSource = CustomerContacts.CustomerContactPaged; GridCustomerPager.Source = CustomerContacts.CustomerContactPaged; GridCustomers.SelectionChanged += new SelectionChangedEventHandler(GridCustomers_SelectionChanged); BusyDialogIndicator.IsBusy = false; } void GridCustomers_SelectionChanged(object sender, SelectionChangedEventArgs e) { CustomerDetails.CurrentItem = GridCustomers.SelectedItem as CustomerContactLink; } private void SaveChanges_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { if (WebContext.Current.User.IsAuthenticated) { bool commited = CustomerDetails.CommitEdit(); if (commited && (!CustomerDetails.IsItemChanged && CustomerDetails.IsItemValid)) { CustomerContacts.Update(CustomerDetails.CurrentItem as CustomerContactLink); CustomerContacts.ctx.SubmitChanges(); CustomerContacts.CustomerContactPaged.CommitEdit(); CustomerContacts.CustomerContactPaged.Refresh(); (GridCustomers.ItemsSource as PagedCollectionView).Refresh(); } } }

  • WPF: Text wrapping not working

    - by Ben
    I've got a grid defined simply: <Grid Margin="0,5,0,0"> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="50"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="50"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="48"></ColumnDefinition> <ColumnDefinition Width="Auto"></ColumnDefinition> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> Then I'm trying to bind some content like this: <TextBlock TextWrapping="Wrap" Grid.Column="3" Text="{Binding Text}"> Set up like this, the text won't wrap. It simply expands the column to fit the text. If I set the Width to a fixed amount on the last column, wrapping works as expected. The problem there is that if the user widens the window, the column stays at a fixed size. How can I get the column to size dynamically with the width of the grid, but still wrap the text within it?

  • Extjs - Getting more from the server

    - by fatnjazzy
    Hi, Is it possible to get every data from the server? for example, i want to get the columns items from the server Via Ajax/Proxy by sending json string? thanks var grid = new Ext.grid.GridPanel({ store: store, columns: [ {id:'company',header: 'Company', width: 160, sortable: true, dataIndex: 'company'}, {header: 'Price', width: 75, sortable: true, renderer: 'usMoney', dataIndex: 'price'}, {header: 'Change', width: 75, sortable: true, renderer: change, dataIndex: 'change'}, {header: '% Change', width: 75, sortable: true, renderer: pctChange, dataIndex: 'pctChange'}, {header: 'Last Updated', width: 85, sortable: true, renderer: Ext.util.Format.dateRenderer('m/d/Y'), dataIndex: 'lastChange'} ], stripeRows: true, autoExpandColumn: 'company', height: 350, width: 600, title: 'Array Grid', stateful: true, stateId: 'grid' });

  • Why is str_replace not replacing this string?

    - by Niall
    I have the following PHP code which should load the data from a CSS file into a variable, search for the old body background colour, replace it with the colour from a submitted form, resave the CSS file and finally update the colour in the database. The problem is, str_replace does not appear to be replacing anything. Here is my PHP code (stored in "processors/save_program_settings.php"): <?php require("../security.php"); $institution_name = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['institution_name']); $staff_role_title = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['staff_role_title']); $program_location = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['program_location']); $background_colour = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['background_colour']); $bar_border_colour = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['bar_border_colour']); $title_colour = mysql_real_escape_string($_POST['title_colour']); $url = $global_variables['program_location']; $data_background = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM sents_global_variables WHERE name='background_colour'") or die(mysql_error()); $background_output = mysql_fetch_array($data_background); $css = file_get_contents($url.'/default.css'); $str = "body { background-color: #".$background_output['data']."; }"; $str2 = "body { background-color: #".$background_colour."; }"; $css2 = str_replace($str, $str2, $css); unlink('../default.css'); file_put_contents('../default.css', $css2); mysql_query("UPDATE sents_global_variables SET data='{$institution_name}' WHERE name='institution_name'") or die(mysql_error()); mysql_query("UPDATE sents_global_variables SET data='{$staff_role_title}' WHERE name='role_title'") or die(mysql_error()); mysql_query("UPDATE sents_global_variables SET data='{$program_location}' WHERE name='program_location'") or die(mysql_error()); mysql_query("UPDATE sents_global_variables SET data='{$background_colour}' WHERE name='background_colour'") or die(mysql_error()); mysql_query("UPDATE sents_global_variables SET data='{$bar_border_colour}' WHERE name='bar_border_colour'") or die(mysql_error()); mysql_query("UPDATE sents_global_variables SET data='{$title_colour}' WHERE name='title_colour'") or die(mysql_error()); header('Location: '.$url.'/pages/start.php?message=program_settings_saved'); ?> Here is my CSS (stored in "default.css"): @charset "utf-8"; /* CSS Document */ body,td,th { font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; color: #000; } body { background-color: #CCCCFF; } .main_table th { background:#003399; font-size:24px; color:#FFFFFF; } .main_table { background:#FFF; border:#003399 solid 1px; } .subtitle { font-size:20px; } input#login_username, input#login_password { height:30px; width:300px; font-size:24px; } input#login_submit { height:30px; width:150px; font-size:16px; } .timetable_cell_lesson { width:100px; font-size:10px; } .timetable_cell_tutorial_a, .timetable_cell_tutorial_b, .timetable_cell_break, .timetable_cell_lunch { width:100px; background:#999; font-size:10px; } I've run some checks using the following code in the PHP file: echo $css .   • Change ExtJS Grid Height in Javascript

    - by williamtroup
    How can I point at the object of a ExtJS Grid and manually set the height (in pixels)? For example, with this same: var grid = new Ext.grid.GridPanel({ store: store, columns: [ {id:'company',header: 'Company', width: 160, sortable: true, dataIndex: 'company'}, {header: 'Price', width: 75, sortable: true, renderer: 'usMoney', dataIndex: 'price'}, {header: 'Change', width: 75, sortable: true, renderer: change, dataIndex: 'change'}, {header: '% Change', width: 75, sortable: true, renderer: pctChange, dataIndex: 'pctChange'}, {header: 'Last Updated', width: 85, sortable: true, renderer: Ext.util.Format.dateRenderer('m/d/Y'), dataIndex: 'lastChange'} ], stripeRows: true, autoExpandColumn: 'company', height: 350, width: 600, title: 'Array Grid', // config options for stateful behavior stateful: true, stateId: 'grid' }); I would i be able to point at the "grid" object and then set the size of the grid? Any help would be fantastic!

  • In WPF using a ListView is there an elegant way to auto resize items?

    - by Justin
    I recently wrote, my first, WPF application that has a list of items that are polled from a web-serivce. The items are displayed/data-bound in a ListView via a GridView. A background thread periodically polls the web-serivce and updates the list. If, say, I had three items initially bound to the ListView that simply display a description and the three descriptions where something like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC Later a new item is added with a description of 'AReallyReallyLongProjectName', I would end up with a list like: - ProjectA - ProjectB - ProjectC - AReallyR The GridViewColumn would not update it's width and would subsequently cut off any new items that extended the original width. I added this bit of code which forces the column to resize, but it just seems a little hacky. (Just seems weird to set a width just to set it back to nothing to force the resize) if(gridView != null) { foreach(var column in gridView.Columns) { if (double.IsNaN(column.Width) column.Width = column.ActualWidth; column.Width = double.NaN; } } Is there a better, more elegant solution, to accomplish this same thing?

  • How can I call some javascript functions but, waiting for the previous has finished?

    - by texai
    I want to call some functions but waiting for the previous one has finished. I know jQuery provides a callback argument in several functions, but I want to learn how implement this behaviour in my own jQuery plugin. So this is the case: After read answers from my previous question I wrote this: (function(callback){ $('#art1').animate({'width':'1000px'},1000); callback(); })((function(callback2){ $('#art2').animate({'width':'1000px'},1000); callback2(); })(function(){ $('#art3').animate({'width':'1000px'},1000); })); But still not working. Three animates still starting at same time. I want they were called one after other. But without using: $('#art1').animate({'width':'1000px'},1000,'linear',function(){ $('#art2').animate({'width':'1000px'},1000,'linear',function(){ $('#art3').animate({'width':'1000px'},1000); }); });

  • jquery tabs changing on change?

    - by Steven
    Hello, I have two tabs each with different styles and different text. One recent posts and one recent comments the css for each are below with the ones I need to have when they are selected. So pretty much when a user selects the recent comments it will change the entire block to the second one (2). Pretty much changing width, and swapping the css for both tabs. I am currently using idtabs http://www.sunsean.com/idTabs/ My question: How can I have it change the tab css and width for both when the right tab is selected and then back again when the left tab is selected. CSS sideboxtopleft { float: left; width: 121px; height:20px; background-image: url(images/categorysplitter.gif); background-position:top right; background-repeat:no-repeat; text-align: center; padding-top: 10px; margin: 0; } sideboxtopleft2 { float: left; width: 173px; height:20px; background-image: url(images/categorysplitter.gif); background-position:top right; background-repeat:no-repeat; text-align: center; padding-top: 10px; margin: 0; } sideboxtopright { float: right; width: 173px; height: 20px; background-image:url(images/categorybg.gif); text-align: center; padding-top: 10px; margin: 0; } sideboxtopright2 { float: right; width: 121px; height: 20px; background-image:url(images/categorybg.gif); text-align: center; padding-top: 10px; margin: 0; } HTML <div id="sidebox" style="padding: 0px; width:294px;"> <div class="idTabs"> <div id="sideboxtopleft"> <a href="#post"><h3>RECENT POSTS <img src="images/arrow.gif" width="9" height="5" alt="v" border="0" /></h3></a> </div> <div id="sideboxtopright"> <a href="#comments"><h3>RECENT COMMENTS <img src="images/arrow2.gif" width="6" height="9" alt=">" border="0" /></h3></a> </div> </div> <div style="padding: 10px;"> <div id="post"> SUP? </div> <div id="comments"> SUP?>>!?>!! </div> </div> </div> <div id="sidebox" style="padding: 0px; width:294px;"> <div class="idTabs"> <div id="sideboxtopleft2"> <a href="#post2"><h3>RECENT COMMENTS <img src="images/arrow.gif" width="9" height="5" alt="v" border="0" /></h3></a> </div> <div id="sideboxtopright2"> <a href="#comments2"><h3>RECENT POSTS <img src="images/arrow2.gif" width="6" height="9" alt=">" border="0" /></h3></a> </div> </div> <div style="padding: 10px;"> <div id="post2"> SUP? </div> <div id="comments2"> SUP?>>!?>!! </div> </div> </div>

  • How to set up a Bitmap with unmanaged data?

    - by Danvil
    I have int width, height; and IntPtr data; which comes from a unmanaged unsigned char* pointer and I would like to create a Bitmap to show the image data in a GUI. Please consider, that width must not be a multiple of 4, i do not have a "stride" and my image data is aligned as BGRA. The following code works: byte[] pixels = new byte[4*width*height]; System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.Copy(data, pixels, 0, pixels.Length); var bmp = new Bitmap(width, height, System.Drawing.Imaging.PixelFormat.Format32bppArgb); for(int i=0; i<height; i++) { for(int j=0; j<width; j++) { int p = 4*(width*i + j); bmp.SetPixel(j, i, Color.FromArgb(pixels[p+3], pixels[p+2], pixels[p+1], pixels[p+0])); } } Is there a more direct way to copy the data?

    Say I have a class that has some properties, like x, y, width and height. In its constructor, I couldn't do this: class A { public: A(int, int, int, int); int x; int y; int width; int height; }; //Wrong and makes little sense name-wise: A::A(int x, int y, int width, int height) { x = x; y = y; width = width; height = height; } First of all, this doesn't really make sense. Second, x, y, width and height become some weird values (-1405737648) when compiled using g++. It does work, however, if I append "a" to the argument names. What is the optimal way of solving these naming conflicts?

  • How to create an image from array of pixel colors? (Flash, Actionscript 3)

    - by Ole Jak
    I have a Width and Height parametr. I have been given an array of colors in such format: [r, g, b, a, r, g, b, a, r, g, b, a... etc] Data can be acsessed by something like this for(var y = 0; y < height; y++) { for(var x = 0; x < width; x++) { r = data[y*width + x + 0] g = data[y*width + x + 1] b = data[y*width + x + 2] a = data[y*width + x + 3] } } I want to paint that data on some sprite. How to do such thing? BTW: I use Flash Builder for mxml+actionscript coding. So if it is easy for you you can give example using MXML (not todraw on some sprite but on some MXML component).

  • CSS: right wrapper dropping off the end of the page

    - by user310606
    I have an issue with a site I am working on where the right wrapper keeps dropping down below the site. Obviously I want it to stay on the right hand side. I've coded up a test case which shows my issue (I think) and I'm wondering if there is a better way to do things. The website url is http://www.musicworkshop.co.nz/ Below is the test case which (I think) is the cause of my issue, however it may not be. The pink box drops down if it does not fit within the page width. Is there a better way to do this? John <html> <head> <title> Test page </title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="test.css" type="text/css" /> </head> <body> <div id="superbox"> <div id="box1"> </div> <div id="box2"> </div> <div id="box3"> </div> <div id="box4"> </div> <div id="box5"> </div> <div id="box6"> </div> </div> </body> </html> #outsidebox{ width: 100%; } #superbox{ width: 1000px; height: 100px; margin: 0 auto; } #box1{ height: 100px; width: 200px; background: red; float: left; } #box2{ height: 100px; width: 200px; background: yellow; float: left; } #box3{ height: 100px; width: 200px; background: blue; float: left; } #box4{ height: 100px; width: 200px; background: green; float: left; } #box5{ height: 100px; width: 200px; background: grey; float: left; } #box6{ height: 100px; width: 200px; background: pink; float: left; }

  • Begin the Clone Wars Have!

    - by Antony Reynolds
    Creating a New Virtual Machine from an Existing Virtual Disk In previous posts I described how I set up an OEL6 machine under VirtualBox that can run an 11gR2 database and FMW 11.1.1.5.  That is great if you want the DB and FMW running in the same virtual image and it has served me well for some proof of concepts and also for some testing of different JVMs.  However I also wanted to run some testing of FMW with the database running on a separate physical machine.  So in this post I will show how to take a VirtualBox image and create a new image based on the disks from that original image. What are my Options? There is more than one way to skin a cat, or in this case to create two separate VMs that can run on different hardware.  Some of the options include: Create new virtual disk images for each new VM. Clone the existing disk images and point the new VM at the cloned images. Point the new VM at the existing snapshots. #1 is too much like hard work, install OEL twice, install a database again, install FMW again, run RCU again!  Life is too short! #2 is probably the safest way of doing things.  VirtualBox allows you to clone a disk image for use in a separate machine.  However this of course duplicates the disk and means that it is now occupying 3 times the space, once for the original disk and twice more for the two clones I would need. #3 is the most space efficient way of doing things.  It does mean however that I can only run the new “cloned” images if I have access to the original image because that is where the base snapshots reside.  However this is not a problem for me as long as I remember to keep all threee images together.  So this is the approach we will follow. Snapshot, What Snapshot? As we are going to create new virtual machines based on existing snapshots we need to figure out which snapshot to use.  We do this by opening the “Media Manager” from within VirtualBox and moving the mouse over the snapshot images until we find the snapshots we want – the snapshot name is identified in the “Attached to:” comment.  In my case I wanted the FMW installed snapshot because that had a database configured for FMW alongside the FMW software.  I made a note of the filename of that snapshot (actually I just noted the first 5 characters as that was all that was needed to uniquely identify the snapshot file). When we create the new machines we will point them at the snapshot filename we have just checked. Network or NotWork? Because we want the two new machines to communicate with each other when hosted in different physical machines we can’t use the default NAT networking mode without a lot of hassle.  But at the same time we need them to have fixed IP addresses relative to each other so that they can see each other whilst also being able to see the outside world. To achieve all these requirements I created two network adapters for each machine.  Adapter 1 was a standard NAT mapping.  This will allow each machine to get a dynamic IP address (10.0.2.15 by default) that can be used to access the external world through the VBox provided NAT gateway.  This is the same as the existing configuration. The second adapter I created as a bridged adapter.  This gives the virtual machine direct access to the host network card and by using fixed IP addresses each machine can see the other.  It is important to choose fixed IP addresses that are not routable across your internal network so you don’t get any clashes with other machines on your network.  Of course you could always get proper fixed IP addresses from your network people, but I have serveral people using my images and as long as I don’t have two instances of the same VM on the same network segment this is easier and avoids reconfiguring the network every time someone wants a copy of my VM.  If it is available I would suggest using the 10.0.3.* network as 10.0.2.* is the default NAT network.  You can check availability by pinging 10.0.3.1 and 10.0.3.2 from your host machine.  If it times out then you are probably safe to use that. Creating the New VMs Now that I had collected the data that I needed I went ahead and created the new VMs. When asked for a “Boot Hard Disk” I used the “Choose a virtual hard disk file…” link to find the snapshot I had previously selected and set that to be the existing hard disk.  I chose the previously existing SOA 11.1.1.5 install for both the new DB and FMW machines because that snapshot had the database with the RCU completed that I wanted for my DB machine and it had the SOA software installed which I wanted for my FMW machine. After the initial creation of the virtual machine go into the network setting section and enable a second adapter which will be bridged.  Make a note of the MAC addresses (the last four digits should be sufficient) of the two adapters so that you can later set the bridged adapter to use fixed IP and the NAT adapter to use DHCP. We are now ready to start the VMs and reconfigure Linux. Reconfiguring Linux Because I now have two new machines I need to change their network configuration.  In particular I need to change the hostname, update the hosts file and change the network settings. Changing the Hostname I renamed both hosts by running the hostname command as root: hostname vboxfmw.oracle.com I also edited the /etc/sysconfig file and set the correct hostname in there. HOSTNAME=vboxfmw.oracle.com Changing the Network Settings I needed to change the network configuration to give the bridged network a fixed IP address.  I first explicitly set the MAC addresses of the two adapters, because the order of the virtual adapters in the VirtualBox Manager is not necessarily the same as the order of the adapters in the guest OS.  So I went in to the System->Preferences->Network Connections screen and explicitly set the “Device MAC address” for the two adapters. Having correctly mapped the Linux adapters to the VirtualBox adapters I then set the Bridged adapter to use fixed IP addressing rather than DHCP.  There is no need for additional routing or default gateways because we expect the two machine to be on the same LAN segment. Updating the Hosts File Having renamed the machines and reconfigured the network I then updated the /etc/hosts file to refer to the new machine name add a new line to the hosts file to provide an additional IP address for my server (the new fixed IP address) add a new line for the fixed IP address of the other virtual machine 10.0.3.101      vboxdb.oracle.com       vboxdb  # Added by NetworkManager 10.0.2.15       vboxdb.oracle.com       vboxdb  # Added by NetworkManager 10.0.3.102      vboxfmw.oracle.com      vboxfmw # Added by NetworkManager 127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost ::1     vboxdb.oracle.com       vboxdb  localhost6.localdomain6 localhost6 To make sure everything takes effect I restarted the server. Reconfiguring the Database on the DB Machine Because we changed the hostname the listener and the EM console no longer start so I need to modify the listener.ora to use the new hostname and I also need to rebuild the EM configuration because it also relies on the hostname. I edited the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/listener.ora and changed the listening address to the new hostname:       (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = vboxdb.oracle.com)(PORT = 1521)) After changing the listener.ora I was able to start the listener using: lsnrctl start I also had to reconfigure the EM database control.  I first deconfigured it using the command: emca -deconfig dbcontrol db -repos drop This drops the repository and removes any existing registered dbcontrols. I then re-configured it using the following command: emca -config dbcontrol db -repos create This creates the EM repository and then configures and starts dbcontrol. Now my database machine is ready so I can close it down and take a snapshot. Disabling the Database on the FMW Machine I set up the database to start automatically by creating a service called “dbora”.  On the FMW machine I do not need the database running so I can prevent it auto-starting by running the following command: chkconfig –del dbora Note that because I am using a snapshot it is not a waste of disk space to have the DB installed but not used.  As long as I don’t run it, it won’t cost me anything. I can now close the FMW machine down and take a snapshot. Creating a New Domain The FMW machine is now ready to create a new domain.  When creating the domain I can point it at the second machine which is running the database.  I can potentially run these machines on two separate physical machines as long as I have the original virtual machine available to both of the physical machines. Gotchas in Snapshotting VirtualBox does not support the concept of linked machines in a network like some virtualization technologies so when creating a snapshot it is a good idea to shut both VMs down and then take a snapshot on both of them.  This is because we want to keep the database in sync with the middleware.  One way to make sure that this happens would be to place all the domain configuration files on the database server via an NFS share, this would mean that all we would need to snapshot would be the database machine because that would hold all the state and configuration. The Sky’s the Limit We have covered a simple case of having just two machines.  I have a more complicated configuration in which two machine run a RAC database off the same base OS image, and two more machines run a SOA cluster based on the same OS image.  Just remember what machine holds state and what are the consequences of taking a snapshot.
