• need help setting up a VPN for remote computer connection

  I am on a low budget right now. I am currently in the process of starting a computer company. I am in need of a VPN network so I can run Dameware tools for working on customers/partners computers remotely. I will be working with Windows and some Apple and linux machines. I have desktop with an AMD Phenom II 965BE(currently running stable at 3.8Ghz) processor with 8 GB of ram and a radeon hd 6870(i know graphics aren't too useful) and about 1.5TB of HDD space. I am attempting to create a network out of my office based all on one machine that would also be secure for me to remotely connect to my partners computers so when they have issues I would be able to connect and do the diagnosing and repairs remotely. What types of servers besides a VPN server would i need to create this? I have access to all Microsoft products so I can run Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, or any other Microsoft Software. thanks for the help all

• Weird noise coming out on Windows 7 when harddisk activity at peak?

  I'm having a very strange problem. I'm hearing a "choooooooooo kkkrrr" sound (Its not like the normal sound speakers make when powered on) all the time. When there is more Hard Disk r/w activity the sound increases and as HDD r/w activity slows down so the sound. I have two other OS installed on my system. I have tested, it only happens when I'm on Windows 7. I have no clue what the hell is happening !? Any help would be greatly appreciated.   The setup: Ubuntu with local Vmware Workstation 10 (everything works locally) Connects(File- Connect to Server) Debian server with the same Vmware Workstation 10 (Windows XP Guest) Debian setup does not allow raw disk access nor shared folders (most options does not exist) No shared folder No physical disk option I use root user for this machine. Default install. I've tried to add shared folder from command line - it does not work. How to enable shared folders or raw disk access? I have created new Windows 8 64 bit template from scratch - I cannot use physical HDD either, and no SharedFolder option. I think this is something about security policy of remote server.

• Western Digital Caviar SE16 not recognized

  Before I start, I have been looking at quite a few websites and I still have not found an answer to my problem. I have been building my own computer recently and I have just received the hard drive (WD Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS) I was planning to put in my computer. After connecting the SATA power cable (99.99999% sure it is connected correctly) and the SATA cable to my motherboard (ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3) I booted my computer into a Linux Mint 13 XFCE 64-bit live USB expecting to see a hard drive when I came to install. Sadly when I checked the only hard drive that was showing was /dev/sda which was my USB with the Linux files on it. I also checked gparted and no hard drive other than my USB was showing up there either. Lastly I checked my BIOS and no matter what SATA port I connected the HDD to it wouldn't show up there either. • Too Much Swapping, even though RAM is 2/3 Empty

  I have a VPS with 9GB RAM, 300GB HDD, 3 GB Swap, 7 Cores. The OS is CentOS 5.7 Final. I have postgres9.0 running on my machine, with proper tuning done (at least by book/wiki of PostgreSQL). What happens is most of the times when some complex query run (by complex I mean select with maximum 3 Joins), eventhough 66% of my RAM is unused there is ~99% swapping is happening. Plus it screws up my disk IO which is most of the time reaching ~100% and slows down everything else. (I tend to believe something's wrong with my disk.) I dont understand the reason of this much of swapping happening. Is it because of context switching?? Most of the time my processors are idle, while the IO wait goes upto 30% during pick times. Would appreciate if some can shed some light on it. Thanks.

• "Missing operating system" even when booting from Linux Live CD: hardware problem?

  My parents' computer stopped booting from the HDD into Windows: it's showing a "Missing operating system" error. I tried burning a Live CD of the latest Ubuntu and booting from that, but it's giving me the same error. I know the Live CD works (I can boot my laptop from it). It does seem to be actually trying to boot from the CD (when I boot with the CD in it takes longer to get to the error message than if I boot with the CD out, or if I change the BIOS boot order to skip the CD drive; and the CD drive light is active during that time). Might this be a hardware problem? Are there common problems I can look for that might cause this?

• Computer restarts infinitely after Bios/Motherboard screen

  Like every morning I turn on my computer (which is kinda new and only couple months old) and I never had any issue with it until now. It starts booting, shows that very first screen which has some motherboard picture and stuff and then it show which buttons to press to enter BIOS and etc. Then it suddenly restarted and after that just kept restarting every 3-5 seconds forever. What could that be? I unplugged power cable, checked all the cables, moved a case, it had some wires stuck under it, blew some dust (but didn't open the case yet) and I tried to boot again and it booted successfully and I am writing this issue now. My specs: i3-3220 3.30Ghz 8GB DDR3 RAM 1TB HDD GeForce GTX 650 Windows 8 x64 I also recently upgraded my security software (that's the most recent thing I did) and it includes ZoneAlarm firewall, Comodo Antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy. But maybe it doesn't have anything to do with this. Cheers

The ram could do with another 4GB, for which I am thinking of replacing the 2x2GB for 2x4GB of the same type. My video card is struggling with the latest releases, so vitally should I ditch the video card and go for something newer (ATI 7850, GTX 660?) or try and get another 5850 for crossfire support? Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

• TrueCrypt Corrupted Files

  Several months ago, I needed to reorganize my data across multiple external hard drives with my laptops primary hard drive as the go-between. My external hard drives are all encrypted with TrueCrypt. It appears to me that somehow during the transfer of my files between the encrypted external drive an the unencrypted internal drive, the files were transferred "as-is" (in their encrypted state). The files range from very small to very large. It appears that this may have happened during one consecutive transfer session. Has anyone ever experienced this problem, and if so were you able to fix it? Is there a way to recreate the encrypted partition, transfer the files, and then decrypt them to their usable state?   I have a problem with my computer. I installed OpenSus on my external, and I still have Windows on my HDD. OpenSus took the Grub file and placed it on my external, so now I have to open OpenSus to open Windows. I never got a Windows CD when I bought my computer ( I live in South Africa :) ).... I want to install Ubuntu 12.04 on my external, but then I will have to format my external in which case I will lose the Grub file causing me to lose Windows, which I can't afford to do... yet. Does anyone have an idea what I can do?

  Recently, in newsletters from websites, I have been seeing computers for sale from manufacturers that include an HDD and an SSD but the SSD has a small capacity like 24 GBs. I don't know if this still holds true, but I learned that when building a computer, you would want to install your OS on your fastest hard drive. I do a lot of PC gaming, so I install my OS and games on my SSD, because I learned that games and many applications make lots of system calls to the OS and performance can only be as fast as the slowest piece. Why these computers come with small capacity SSDs? Most OS's take up around 20 to 30 GBs of space, so what are the benefits of such a small SSD? Are these small size SSDs for caching? and what exactly does caching mean (what does it do and how does it help)?

• NO USB devices show in windows 8.1 device manager

  Whatever I plug into my USB ports will get power and will charge but will not connect to the computer. I have restarted the computer several times, I re-installed the chipset drivers and still even a USB HDD will not show up under the device manager, not even as an unknown device. I believe this happened because I switched android adb to listen on tcpip rather than USB as this is when the USB ports stopped working. I have set it back to USB but that hasn't seemed to correct the issue. It seems to me that ADB has shut off detection of devices through USB and I am out of ideas and can't find anything useful online. I would prefer not to have to reinstall windows unless I really have to but it is looking like that is exactly what I am going to have to do. I am using windows 8.1. Thanks

• Boot failure on installation from a burned iso image

  I'm encountering boot failure while trying to install a Linux distro from a CD. I'm using an older PC; here are its specs: HP Pavilion a255c 2.66GHz CPU, 512MB RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003 I reclaimed an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working, as it's recognized in the BIOS (auto-detected). So this is not the original HDD, but a replacement. I downloaded a mini.iso of Ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install, and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM]. I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CD-ROM. This old PC also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave. The Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned Linux CD. With these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" when I start the pc with the cd (burned iso image). Would I be able to boot off a usb flash drive? Would that work?

• Correct drivers for AMD Radeon™ HD 7650M

  So, I have a Sony Vaio sve15118fg running Ubuntu 12.10 which comes with an AMD Radeon™ HD 7650M graphics chip. This was all working fine until some updates (note sure what they were) came through, after installing my laptop now no longer boots properly, specifically: Upon attempting to boot the screen starts flicking violent striped horizontal lines. This can only be corrected via the power button. Attempting to do anything in recovery - bar dropping to a root shell - runs fsck which ends up hanging (although the system still responds there is no HDD activity). This is remedied via Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart the system. Running fsck manually from the root shell completes successfully. I have attempted numerous things including removing all propriety drivers, Trying the two installed propriety drivers, installing the latest beta driver from AMD. etc. These all yeild various results, such as the same as above, or a gnome-fallback session, or a gnome-shell session with various flickers and graphical artifacts. So, I am wondering, what the heck do I have to do to get this to work?!? I don't really game, especially in ubuntu, so I just want a working system! not fussed about 3d acceleration of whatever...

• HP ProBook 4720s UEFI boot only manually into 12.04

  I'm trying to get UEFI boot on my ProBook 4720s. Because I swapped the HDD for a SSD I had a blank canvas to start. The 12.04 Live DVD refuses to boot into UEFI, as do Alternate and desktop CD's. However, when I make a 16Gb flashdrive into a live FS using the bootdisk tool in ubuntu, I can boot from USB, manually into UEFI mode. It even sidesteps to DVD as medium when I boot from USB with 12.04 Live DVD present. I installed a GPT partitiontable with part 1, label EFI, fs FAT32, flag BOOT, mounts at /boot/efi part 2, label Linux-ROOT, fs ext4, no flags, mounts at / part 3, label Linux-SWAP, fs swap, no flags, mounts as swap So far, My system refuses to boot from harddrive by itself. I have to select "Boot from EFI file" and manually browse to (HD0,GPT1)\EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi any other option ends in "no system disk, please insert boot disk" I tried installing BURG, but that merely enforces non-efi boot. I tried most of the solutions I could find, but one says \EFI\grub\grub.cfg next says \EFI\ubuntu\ubuntu,cfg I'm confused and getting frustrated. How do I correctly install Ubuntu 12.04 in UEFI mode on this machine???

• Booting Ubuntu Failure : error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0'

  I have installed ubuntu 12.10 in a WD external harddrive (320GB). This is a complete installation, not live USB. When I plug it in my HP desktop I go to the BIOS settings and boot off the harddrive, everything work perfectly -as it should. Now this works on everysingle computer and laptop in my house (all HP) -except for ONE. My HP ProBook 4530s. When I select to boot of the USB I get the Message: error: attempt to read or write outside of disk 'hd0' Now, I have removed the hdd from my laptop and the external drive is the ONLY drive plugged in. Bellow is a picture of the screen. After the message I navigate to ls / (as shown below): After here I try to acces other folders under ls /, for example, I try to go to ls /boot to get to the grub folder. Then I get the same message as before: as shown by the image below: The only folders I can access without getting the message again are /home, /run and /usr. So how do I: Boot Ubuntu from GRUB2 (this screen) manually Set to automatically boot Ubuntu If possible an explanation for this problem Thanks!

• Cannot re-install Ubuntu 12.04 via USB (USB booting issue)

  I've read the previous questions related to my same problem regarding the USB not booting issue and have tried everything from what was replied in those post's but still no luck. I will tell you everything I have done so far (If it helps in any way...) 1) Previously I had Windows 7 running on my laptop, where I downloaded the official torrent ISO (i386 desktop) and using Unetbootin I made a bootable USB 2) Restarted the laptop with the USB connected and IT BOOTED, then I installed it on my HDD(Internal) replacing my Windows 7 3) After installing it restarted and I took some time to explore Ubuntu after the log in, then went online and followed some website for the things to do after installing Ubuntu 12.04.....and then there were errors while installing some softwares and plug-ins. The error asked me to check if i was connected to the Internet properly....while I was surfing facebook good as always on an open Firefox. The same error comes when installing Ubuntu one. 4) so I decided to re-install Ubuntu thinking I had done something wrong during the installation (I'm installing from the same USB)...and it didn't boot. I checked the boot priority and it was/is set in USB first (as always). To say in detail what happens is when I restart the USB light flashes at start, later on stops and in the screen the installed Ubuntu 12.04 loads up for me to log in (meaning it's not booting from the USB). By reading you can see that I haven't done much and I honestly didn't even touch the system settings to mess things up. As I have mentioned above I've tried everything in the previous post's in this related topic and it didn't work so I'm hoping for a new solution as a reply. • Installation failed with a Blank Screen

  Blank Screen, no Fix I've tried works... Hardware conflict maybe? First I tried AMD64 Ubuntu desktop. I got into the boot screen, however selecting install returns 1-2 seconds of code then blank screen no-idle. Then I tried the alternate install. Worked, some additional software installs failed. Go to boot for first time, I see BIOS load then black/blank screen. No flicker or cursor... screen turns off. (I am also having issues installing any 64bit OS legit WIN 7 64 Ult., WinXP 64 PRO ISO, also WinXP 32 Legit, WinXP 64Pro ISO returns BSOD on install. All win 7 builds return with CD/DVD driver error. The only OS that installs is beta build 7000 win 7.) Please help! • Ubuntu 12.10 + Windows 7 - No option to install alongside windows 7

  I have a 64-bit Windows 7 OS installed at the moment. I have used GPartEd to shrink the current Windows 7 partition on my 720GB HDD to 200GB. I have then made a new NTFS partition of 200GB which I will keep for later on as a shared drive between both Windows 7 and Ubuntu. So in GPartEd I now have 3 partitions which were all automatically there from the Windows 7 installation, I only shrank the 3rd one from the 698GB or so that it was to 200GB and created the 200GB for the shared drive. I first tried creating another 200GB partition at this stage to install Ubuntu too but when I burnt the DVD and loaded it, Ubuntu gave me no option to install alongside Windows, only the option to erase the entire disk and install Ubuntu on the blank drive...not what I want to do. So I tried installing it through clicking 'Something else', it downloaded all the install files but didn't install. I then had a lot of problems with getting the DVD drive to work and what not but now have this fixed so I can use Windows again. So now I've used GPartEd to delete the partitions so again I'm now left with the 3 partitions there which Windows 7 automatically installs and a 200GB NTFS partition I will later use as a shared drive. Booting up from the Ubuntu disc and again there is no option to install alongside Windows 7. How do I get it to do so? All I would like is Windows 7 and Ubuntu on a dual boot, with a 200GB NTFS partition to dump my work onto so that I can access it from both OS's. Thanks.

• Freezes when finishing installation of ubuntu 12.10

  I wanted to install Ubuntu next to my Windows 7 and made a 100GB partition for that. After that I downloaded the Image for burning the installation cd. As soon as I started to boot from that DVD, my computer made some crackling noises and then froze completely. I had to press the power button in order to shut it down. After that I decided to download the Installer Version for Windows and startet installing it on the E:\ partition named Ubuntu. So far so good, the installer finished and told me to restart my computer. I did that and Ubuntu wanted to finish the installation. As soon as that started, the computer made some crackling noises again and froze completely. Then I tried the Safe Graphics option, or whatever it is called, and it froze again. I would really like to have Ubuntu installed on my system, because I like it. My computer components are the following: Mainboard: Gigabyte X58-USB3 Processor: Intel Core i7 960 RAM: 8GB 2000Mhz Graphicscard: NVidia Geforce GTX 570 HDD: 1 TB 7200rpm with 3 partitions(100GB W7, 100GB Ubuntu, 800GB Data)

• winusb formatting and installation error, lost data storage on 32gb flash drive

  i recently purchased a pny brand 32gb usb drive to use for configuring a dual boot on my computer, and for hdd files backup. i also recently installed zorin os 6.1 as my main os, and then downloaded winusb for linux, and set it to install the iso for windows 8 release preview as the activation code is still good untill jan.2013, and there was an error on the installation. i rebooted the computer, plugged in the usb drive, and i went from 32gb usable space to somehow having a partitioned drive (mounted as two separate drives) one being 3.7gb, and the other being i believe 25gb or so... i then formatted the drive with gparted back to fat32, and it still read as a windows usb with the installation files on it still? so then i took my usb drive to my library which runs windows 8, i installed bootice, and completely reformatted my usb drive, and somehow it is usable, but still not perfect. it reads i only have 29.9gb usable space... i have already thought of the non usable area, and that doesnt account for this error as when i first bought the drive and plugged it in on linux, it read total drive space was 32.2 and exactly 32 was usable. somehow i am short by 2gb of space which is very critical for what i am doing. i love linux, i only needed windows for bluray playback with daplayer as it wont work well in wine, but if i keep losing space on my usb drives im afraid ill have to switch back. any help would be appreciated as i already visited pny's site, and they have no support for this issue, and im not that fond of partitions, file systems, or formatting.
