• Core i7 c1e and speedstepping - BSOD on shutdown

  I'm having an interesting problem with my recent Core i7 Digital Audio workstation build that I am curious to see if others have encountered. First, here are the specs on the machine. ASUS P6TD Deluxe Intel X58 Socket LGA1366 MB Intel Core i7-950 3.06Ghz 8M LGA1366 CPU CORSAIR DOMINATOR 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS 500GB Plus a couple ASUS optical drives and a 750W Corsair PSU. Running Windows 7 x64. All this is connected to the nefarious Digi 002 firewire audio interface for use with Pro Tools. I following mostly the specs posted by many other I7 users in the digidesign community who pooled their collective knowledge in this thread. Now after completing my build, I fell victim to the "UD5 squeal" described at that forum thread. So taking the advice posted, I disabled c1e advanced halt state and Intel speed stepping (I would likely have done this anyway to maintain a stable clock, power consumption isn't really a relevant concern on this machine.) I enabled XMP to set the ram timings properly as well. What I am experiencing is a BSOD upon shutdown, but only immediately after windows fully exits and ends all processes. The error is a MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION 0x000000. The funny thing is that it is extremely intermitent and only occurs if the shutdown immediately followed a period of relative idleness. It does not a generate a minidump, I suspect because windows monitoring has terminated by the time this error occurs. No damage is evident and one can simply turn off manually and the system will act as though a proper shutdown had occurred. If anything it is a annoyance, I just want to be certain it is not affecting my long term stability. I have read that the i7 950 does not like DRAM voltages past 1.65, but that they are acceptable if they are within .5 of the BLCK setting. I have tried disabling XMP and setting all timings to auto and the problem still manifests in an identical way. It is suspect that the cpu idleness preceding shutdown is the determining factor, as both c1e and speedstepping are both settings intended to modify handling of this state. Any suggestions or prior experiences would be greatly appreciated.   Hi, I have installed Kubuntu 9.10 afresh on an HP desktop computer with a Samsung SyncMaster 2243 and Intel integrated graphics card. • Netboot Intel Macs without BSDP

  I have a netboot setup with DeployStudio that works great in my lab, but doesn't work on our main network. After some digging, I believe it's because our network admins are filtering BSDP (Boot Service Discovery Protocol) on our subnet at the switch level. Is it possible to hard code which server my clients (early 2007 iMac Core2Duos) should boot from without relying on BSDP? Perhaps relevant details: I do not have control over switch configs or DHCP settings. Client and server are running 10.6 Snow Leopard. The clients see the netboot server advertising itself in the 'Startup Disk' system preferences pane, but when I go to netboot it just leaves me with a flashing globe.

I have a few hints to think that it is not: The "Desktop Effects" will not load Apps such as stardock, when attempting to use OpenGL rendering, will display black boxes instead of transparency In the games Pioneers, the number-tile icons are suspiciously just black circles Windows games running with Wine will only support software rendering, not hardware rendering When I boot into a Knoppix LiveCD, the desktop effects do work, splendidly, meaning compiz detects my computer as capable. My problem with troubleshooting is that Canonical has basically eliminated the conf-file-based mechanism of X11 as far as I can tell, thus making it even harder to ensure graphics modules are loading properly.   I'd basically like to rehash this question, only 22 months later. The last system I built was in 2006, shortly after AMD came out with socket AM2. I was able to upgrade the processor on it 3 times and would love to do the same with my next computer. Since AMD seems to be lagging, I'm going for Intel this time. I've read that Intel changes chip sets all the time, so there's no safe bet. I also read (1 comment on 1 forum) that said LGA 2011 will have 8-core support, but LGA 1155 won't, which leads me to believe that LGA 2011 might be a better choice. Anyone have any good advice for me?

• Cannot increase my screen resolution

  I am trying to install my new monitor but my Graphics Adapter (Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family) does not offer a resolution of 1920x1080 in the [Display Properties Settings] window. It only offers up to 1360x768. Can anyone explain to me how I can increase this number to the correct resolution. The monitor does show my the windows desktop, albeit at a lower resolution which is being stretched to fill the screen, making it look very blurry. I have installed the "Monitor Drivers" I found on the disk supplied with new monitor, but these do not appear to have made any difference. The Intel software that comes with the graphics card has an information window containing lots of info about the card and the monitor itself. I have placed this on a webpage so you can examine it if helpful. Many thanks with your help in getting my Christmas present to work! Patrick P.S.: Before I got this screen I checked to see if my graphics card could cope with such a large screen.

• Installing Debian 7.1 on FakeRAID/Intel Z77 results in boot with no grub menu

  I'm trying to install Debian 7.1 from DVD onto 2x500GB drives which are set up in a FakeRAID mirror using the on-board FakeRAID provided by the Z77 chipset. I have followed the guide here https://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/SataRaid. Namely, I booted into the expert install with the 'dmraid=true' option added, installed onto the RAID mirror which the installer correctly detected, then installed grub2 onto /dev/mapper/.. raid volume. I chose to use LVM (so a boot partition + LVM volume). As per the guide, I have uncommented the "GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true" line in "/etc/default/grub" and ran "update-grub" then "grub-install /dev/mapper/.." (with the right RAID device in the command). However, after I rebooted the system, all I got was a grub console. It did not load the menu. I checked and it seems that it never even generated a menu file. I re-installed Debian a few times since, trying out different options and also a few workarounds people posted online, but to no avail. The best I am getting is a grub console. No menu. Some times it will generate the grub.cfg, some times it won't, depending on the workaround I try. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. There is no need to preach how I should not use FakeRAID. I have seen others trying to figure this out so I think a resolution to this issue would be of interest to more than just me. Also, I first installed the system onto a small drive for testing something else. I made a backup with Acronis and was able to restore that onto the RAID mirror by using Universal Restore. When I installed it onto a 500GB without RAID, backed up using the same method, then restored onto a RAID volume of the same size, it would not boot and I got grub errors. Weird. I can post more details, just let me know what you want to see.

  Hi everyone, im a little bit stuck. I had a windows 7 starter installed on this netbook, it wasn't that great so I installed windows 7 ultimate. everything is OK apart from the screen resolution. it doesn't let me choose the optimal 1366x768 resolution and defaults to lower quality, in fact it doesn't even list it. I have tried drivers from Microsoft, Asus and Intel and still no joy. Any suggestions? It has the Intel 3150 Graphics Media Accelerator Much appreciated :)

• I can't set the resolution to that recommended by my monitor

  Firstly, I have looked here but didn't find what I needed. I have a Dell Optiplex 380 only using the on-board graphics (believe its the Intel G41 Express Chipset) but I can't seem to get the resolution right. The monitor I'm using (HP LE1901w) wants me to use 1440x900 but the only options I get are: 1600 x 1200 1366 x 768 1360 x 768 1280 x 1024 1280 x 960 1152 x 864 1024 x 768 800 x 600 So it will allow me to go higher or lower but not 1440x900. I've tried getting the driver from various different sources (Dell, Intel, Windows 7 Update) but still can't get that option. Does anybody know what else I can try?

  Hi i have installed windows 7 on my 2 year old ASUS EEE PC 1000HD. The default Operating system it came with was windows xp. Now the system is working fine but there are some display problems which i am going to state now: Firstly, during booting windows 7 logo is missing. There are no options for resolution changes. The only option possible is 800x600. The boot time is quite long when compared to xp. The graphics driver used in this system is STANDARD VGA GRAPHICS ADAPTER. The processor is intel celeron with 1GB RAM. I think with these requirements it is possible to get windows 7 with finer resolution. But why these problems are occurring?I even tried to install graphics driver provided by intel for this system. But i ve got the error message "this system doesn't meet the necessary requirements". So how to overcome this problem??

  Hi, Im having a strange feeling, but let me first introduce myself as a software developer. I started to program when I was still a kid, I had about 10 or 11 years. I really enjoy my work and never get bored from it. It's amazing how somebody could be paid for what he really likes to do and would be doing it anyway even for free. WHen I first started to program, I was feeling proud of what I was doing, each application I built was for me a success and after 2-3 year I had a feeling that I'm a coding guru. It was a nice feeling ;-) But the more I was in the field, the more types of software I started to develop I was starting to have a feeling that I'm completely wrong in that I'm guru. I felt that I'm not even a mediocre developer. Each new field I start to work on is giving me this feeling. Like when I once developed a device driver for a client, I saw how much I need to learn about device drivers. When I developed a video filter for an application, I saw how much do I still need to learn about DirectShow, Color Spaces, and all the theory behind that. The worst thing was when I started to learn algorithms. It was several years ago. I knew then the basic structures and algorithms like the sorting, some types of trees, some hashtables, strings etc.. and when I really wanted to learn a group of structures I learned about 5-6 new types and saw that in fact even this small group has several hundred subtypes of structures. It's depressing how little time people have in their lives to learn all this stuff. I'm now a software developer with about 10 years of experience and I still feel that I'm not a proficient developer when I think about things that others do in the industry. Is this normal what I'm experiencing or is it a sign of a destructive excessive ambition? Thanks in advance for any comments.

  Many android applications have quite poor i18n-support, and for an understandable reason, as it adds much work for the developer. From a both intuitive and cultural point of view it would be a good thing if end-users could translate the apps themself, and OTA share the translation, without reinstalling the app itself. In concept; as wikipedia, some add content easily, others only use what's there. It's of course important that the service is as easy as possible to use, both for app-developers, and people willing to transcribe. To keep it simple, this is the solution I'm concidering; Developer perspective: Developer uses a customized setContentView when open activities/layouts that will seach for thanslations of xml-entries. (below) The customized version is provided as a free downloadable library/class..., turning the i18n feature to more or less a one liner. User perspective: User downloads app without any translation As app launches, it checks locale running at phone, and will look for a translated xml-file at shared space in SD. If no or old transcribed xml (above), try to download new from internet-service (ansync). This is all done by library above, no need for intents. Translator perspective: Separate app to provide translations for any app using the i18n service above. (Could be just a webapp), with some form of QA on translators/input. QUESTION: Now, for this to work efficiently, it has to be AeasyAP for the developer to even bother, and the most fluent solution would be a customized version of setContentView, that simply loads the translated values from external xml, instead of the ones in the apk. Is this possible at all, and if not, what's your suggested solutions? • Can I install an x86 version of XP on an acer aspire one

  I have bought an acer aspire one which has the intel atom processor running linux and am having difficulty getting a 3G USB modem (huwaei e220) working with it. I have spent a significant amount of time trying to get this working but as the modem is not supported on Linux I have now decided to give in and install xp. Is there a specific version of xp that I need for this processor? or can I install the standard x86 version

  Hello, I'm using the AtomFeedHelper and everything is working fine except for one feed where I need to link each entry to a URL which is not the default polymorphic_url for the record. Per the documentation I've specified an :url option for the entry. This correctly renders a <url> tag in the atom node but the <link rel="alternate" still points to the default polymorphic_url. Looking at the source and the documentation I don't understand why this is happening. When I look at the source listed for entry here http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionView/Helpers/AtomFeedHelper/AtomFeedBuilder.html I'd assume that this line would work correctly: @xml.link(:rel => 'alternate', :type => 'text/html', :href => options[:url] || @view.polymorphic_url(record)) Confused. • Can a Site get a Virus from using Curl?

  I have a script which uses simple php curl requests to get the contents from rss/atom feeds.... now my question is it possible that by using curl, is there a chance i might get a virus? Let's say I do a php curl request to a rss feed in feedburner (I know this site does not contain any viruses, but this is only an example) and let's say this site has a malicious virus of some kind. Is there a chance that I might inherit that virus too? If yes, what precautions can I do to make sure something like that never happens.   Hey Guys, this one is a quick Question: What is the best (or THE) way to change my SQL Express 2008 (with advance...) installation to a 2008 Developer edition? I need to keep the databases, along with the logins and so on. I need to upgrade because, I Want to use all the features in TFS 2010. Do I have to make backups of all the data and uninstall express - install developer? Is there a quicker way? • User Productivity Kit - Powerful Packages (Part 2)

  In my first post on packages I described what a package is and how it can be used. I also started explaining some of the considerations that should be taken into account when determining how to arrange your packages. The first is when the files are interrelated and depend on one another such as an HTML file and it's graphics. A second consideration is how the files are used in your outlines. Let's say you're using a dozen Word doc files. You could place them all in a single package or put each Word doc file in a separate package but what's the right thing to do? There are several factors that will influence your decision. To understand the first, let me explain a function of UPK publishing. Take an outline in UPK that has an attachment (concept, frame link, or hyperlink) that points to a file in a package. When you publish this outline, the publishing engine will determine that there is a link to a file in the package and copy the contents of the package to the publishing destination directory. This is done to ensure that any interrelated files are kept together. For the situation where you have an HTML file with links to number of graphics files, this is a good thing. If, however, the package has a dozen unrelated Word doc files and you link to only one of them, all dozen Word documents will be copied to the publishing destination directory.  Whether or not this is a good thing is dependent on two things. First, are all of the files in the package used in the outline that you're publishing? Take an outline that includes links to all of the Word documents in that dozen document package I described earlier. For this situation, you may choose to keep all the files in a single package for convenience. A second consideration is how your organization leverages reuse in UPK. In this context, I'm referring to the link style of reuse such as when you link to the same topic from multiple UPK outlines and changes to the topic appear in both places. Take an example where you have the earlier mentioned dozen Word document package and an outline with a dozen topics in it. Each topic has an attachment pointing to one of the Word documents in the package (frame link, concept, etc.) If you're only publishing this outline, the single package probably works fine but what if you're reusing one of these topics in another outline? As I explained earlier, linking to one file in the package will result in all files in the package being copied to your published output. In this example, linking to one topic in the first outline will result in all dozen Word documents being copied to the published output. This may result in files in the output that you don't want there for business or size reasons. This is a situation in which you should consider placing each of the Word documents in it's own separate package. With each document in it's own package, that link to a single document will result in only that single package and single Word document being copied to the published output. In my last post I had described that packages are documents in the UPK library. When using the multi-user version of the UPK Developer you can leverage standard library capabilities for managing the files in these packages during the development process - capabilities such as check in / check out, history, etc. When structuring your packages take into consideration how the authors are going to be adding, modifying and deleting files from the packages. A single package is a single document in the UPK library. Like any other document in the library, a single user can check out the package and edit it at a time. If you have a large number of files in a single package and these must be modified by many users, you need to consider whether this will cause problems as multiple users compete to update the same package. If the files don't depend on each other consider placing the files in separate packages to reduce contention. I hope you've enjoyed these two posts on how you can leverage the power of packages in your content. In summary, consider the following when structuring your packages: Is the asset a single, standalone file or a set of files that depend on each other? Will all the files always be used together in a single outline or may only some of the files be needed based on how the content is reused across multiple outlines? Will multiple developers need to update the files in a single package or should you break it into multiple packages to reduce contention when checking out the document? • SQL Server Upgrade 'Developer > Enterprise'

  Hey guys, My company purchased Visual Studio Pro 2008 last year, which had a 'free' copy of SQL Server Developer, which I have been using for development. We are wanting to upgrade the copy of developer edition to enterprise (As we now want to use the server as a production server), and have purchased the licenses for this. Now... Morally we're in the clear... However does this comply with MS licensing T&C's? We have Developer installed how we want it, and don't really want to uninstall SQL Server Dev just to install SQL Server Ent. Is there a way to transfer the license key to our Enterprise key without having to reinstall? Thanks, JD
