  • Web.NET event coming in October

    If you’re a web developer in Europe (or would like an excuse to travel to Europe), you should definitely take a look at the Web.NET event coming in October. It’s being organized by two Italian web maestros (Simone Chiaretta and Ugo Lattanzi) and the session list looks fantastic. The event site pretty much speaks for itself, but here’s a quick version: It’s a free one-day event on October 20th, with a huge variety of great sessions by great speakers, all 100% focused on web development. There’s a pizza-fuelled hackathon in the evening; thrills, spills and hot new skills. It’s a great chance to network with the local (in relative terms) web development community. It’s free (although all donations are very greatly appreciated). It’s in Milan, darling. Here’s what you need to do: Go and register on www.webnetconf.eu, and vote on which sessions you think look the most interesting. I know this will be a difficult process – it’s *very* hard to choose – but persevere! Grab your place when the free tickets become available early next month (places are limited). Come to Milan in October, learn some new skills, meet some great people, and maybe build something awesome if you feel like staying up late. I’ll be there, and hopefully I’ll see you on the day.

  • Programming language for web

    I haven't programmed in a while, and have kind of lost interest, but I want to get back, and I've enjoyed C# the most, a lot more than objective-c and visual basic. So I want to make some games that me and my friends will be able to play next school year. So basically something you can play on the web. What programming languages deploy to the web? If c# is possible, and a mac with safari/firefox would be able to use it (I can't install plugins, and I don't want to get in trouble for making myself admin again) Flash, Java, etc. If java does, I'd like that most since it's most like c#. Then what libraries/engines would I use? I want to do 2d. And then what IDE would I use? Thanks in advance!

  • Designing an API on top with Java RMI and Rest APIs

    I'm working on the backend of a java web application. We have a document repository (Fedora Commons specifically) where we house xml files. I want to abstract the API of the repository internally so that we aren't tightly coupled to one product. I'd also like to give the flexibility of connecting to to a repository via Java RMI or REST APIs. I was hoping to get advice or resources on how to implement something like this. My thought it that I'd have some abstract repository class that had methods like getRecord, updateRecord, and deleteRecord. In the constructor I would pass the URI for the repository and the API method and port. This would allow some flexibility in the future so that if the REST api became more practical, but allow the flexibility or using RMI which could (should?) have better performance. Am I over thinking this or am I on the right path?

    I'm about to start in on a new Spring MVC project, and I'm examining the various options for the view. I've never been a fan of JSP, and I've run into JSP-related performance problems in the past, so I was looking through the other options. I'm hoping that somewhere somebody's taken a census of the various options (maybe it'll have to be me) and pronounced which ones are quick, or at least which options there are. Here are the choices I've thought of, ordered from obvious to bizarre: JSP, JSTL Velocity FreeMarker GSP (Groovy JSP) ERB powered by IronRuby or some such craziness Tea Any suggestions, personal preferences, or other good options for the list?

    I am looking for some resources on the JVM bytecode. Ideally I would for a short book; something more than a blog post but not a 800 pages tome. If it is relevant, I am a Scala developer, not a Java one, although I know Java just fine. I would like something that allowed me to read JVM bytecode and answer questions such as: Why does the bytecode has to know about high level construct such as classes? Are subtyping relations still visible in bytecode? How does type erasure work exactly? How do Oracle and Dalvik bytecode differ, and what consequences does this have for, say, developing Android apps with Scala? How does the JVM manage the stack, and why exactly this creates issues with tail call elimination? and so on.

  • http streaming using java servlet

    I have a servlet based web application which produces two sets of data. One set of data in the webpage which is essential and other set which is optional. I would like to render the essential data as fast as possible and then stream the optional data. I was thinking of writing the essential data to the output stream of HttpServletRequest and then call HttpServletRequest.flushBuffer() to commit the response to the client, but do not return from the servlet code, but instead create the optional data , write that to the outputstream again and then return from servlet code. What are the things that could go wrong in this scheme ? Is this a standard practice to achieve this goal?

  • Implementation of instance testing in Java, C++, C#

    For curiosity purposes as well as understanding what they entail in a program, I'm curious as to how instance testing (instanceof/is/using dynamic_cast in c++) works. I've tried to google it (particularly for java) but the only pages that come up are tutorials on how to use the operator. How do the implementations vary across those langauges? How do they treat classes with identical signatures? Also, it's been drilled into my head that using instance testing is a mark of bad design. Why exactly is this? When is that applicable, instanceof should still be used in methods like .equals() and such right? I was also thinking of this in the context of exception handling, again particularly in Java. When you have mutliple catch statements, how does that work? Is that instance testing or is it just resolved during compilation where each thrown exception would go to?

If I do something like this: Collection<HashMap<String, Object[]>> addAll = new ArrayList<HashMap<String, Object[]>>(); // add some hashmaps to the list.. currentList.addAll(newElements); //currentList is of type: List<? extends Map<String, Object[]>> I understand I need to initialize both variables.   • .NET Web Service hydrate custom class

    I am consuming an external C# Web Service method which returns a simple calculation result object like this: [Serializable] public class CalculationResult { public string Name { get; set; } public string Unit { get; set; } public decimal? Value { get; set; } } When I add a Web Reference to this service in my ASP .NET project Visual Studio is kind enough to generate a matching class so I can easily consume and work with it. I am using Castle Windsor and I may want to plug in other method of getting a calculation result object, so I want a common class CalculationResult (or ICalculationResult) in my solution which all my objects can work with, this will always match the object returned from the external Web Service 1:1. Is there anyway I can tell my Web Service client to hydrate a particular class instead of its generated one? I would rather not do it manually: foreach(var fromService in calcuationResultsFromService) { ICalculationResult calculationResult = new CalculationResult() { Name = fromService.Name }; yield return calculationResult; } Edit: I am happy to use a Service Reference type instead of the older Web Reference.

  • After changing web host, I get a 'file does not exist' error

    I run a WordPress blog, and have recently changed web hosts. When changing web hosts, I copied all files and exported/imported the database etc as explained by lots of tutorials found easily on Google. The blog home page works fine. What goes wrong: When I click on any link from the home page, the browser gets stuck in a redirect loop. Looking at the error log, I see: File does not exist: /usr/local/apache/htdocs/index.php The directory /usr doesn't even exist for my website - so perhaps this is looking for a file that was present using my old Web Host and is no longer present with my new web host? What is going on, and how might I resolve it?

  • How to get started in coding for JBoss

    I have an idea on how to revamp our internal application, after having accessed the needs of the users, addressing thier current issues, and the like. But I am not a coder. My last application I wrote was in college, in C, (java wasn't invented-ish!) and it was a booking system, with the option to add on other modules, blah blah. I got an A, but I became a system administrator instead, more intrested in designing and maintainend networks and infrastructure, but with the advent of virtualisation, and linux management tools such as puppet I can now manage infrastructure in my sleep! Now I want to write code - to put on my infastructure, and I want to build .... a booking system! This is just to get experience, but I am at a loss as to where to start. Setting up the environment, will take me about a day. Writing the spec, even how I want it to work, I already know, but as for actually coding in a decent manner, I can only guess. If anyone can recommend a book, website, blog, twitter person to follow, or just advice on how to build a kick butt basic jboss app, then please, "I AM READY TO LEARN" :)

    I need to develop a java desktop application which sends queries to a search engine in order to obtain the very first highest ranked pages (Example: the first 4 pages only). Some heavy processing needs to be performed on the retrieved pages, so the time between a query and another won't be less then a minute. I would like to know whether there is any web search API for java, suitable for my situation, i.e. which allows the use of automated queries? (since in my case, the queries are generated programatically, and not through user interaction) I have checked Google's AJAX Search API and also Yahoo's Search Boss, however they only allow queries triggered by direct user interaction.

  • Insane SmartGWT + GWT situation... Error on instantiating ListGridRecord?

    Hi all, I am asking this here in the hope that someone has maybe come across this situation too... I have posted this on the SmartGWT forum: I am having an issue when trying to instantiate a ListGridRecord object on my server side. I am using the ListGrid on the client side, I want to use GWT's RPC to pass back an array of ListGridRecord objects to populate the grid with. I know that SmartGWT is designed to link to a datasource but I want full control over when I populate the grid and this shouldn't be as much of a nightmare as it is to do. I have searched high and low and cannot find anyone complaining about the same thing. The exception however (listed below) has come up (in my search findings) as a possible memory error - where increasing the memory (-Xmx512m argument) has apparently solved the problem. It did not, however, sort out mine. If anyone can shed any light on this I would greatly appreciate it! Here are my details: Developing using Eclipse Galileo on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) and GWT 2.0.3, I built the initial GWT project using the webAppCreator bundled with the GWT 2.0.3 release and imported the project into Eclipse as described on the GWT Getting Started Page (as using the GWT Eclipse plugin caused even more nightmares when trying to connect to a database - this is apparently due to using the Google App Engine and turning it off as all the posts suggested only causes ClassNotFound exceptions).     Hi all I wonder what is the commonly used method and protocol for a, say, smartphone application to send its data to a web application (where these data should be proceeded and stored). My naive beginner's approach would be something like this: From my smartphone app, use a framework encoding my data object into a json object Send this object via http to a listener addressed by a dedicated URL On the server side, use a JSON parser and store it via ORM etc. into a database Questions: Is this too naive? 2a. If yes: What is the appropiate way to tackle this workflow? 2b. If no: What frameworks to use in JAVA for serializing/deserializing to/from JSON objects? Any example for a json listener in the web? The text file that the strings are taken from has a colon separating them.   • Hosting media on separate server than web server

    Basically I have a website hosted by a web hosting company which I have limited access to (ftp upload etc). I have a home server which I use to record and store audio files. Is there an elegant way or best practice to host a page on the webserver which links to the audio files? I'm considering hosting a page on the home server and redirecting to that from the web server, or setting up something like rsync to push the audio files to the web server - I'm just not certain which solution would be best.
