  • Can I use <link> tags in the body of an HTML document?

    - by Edward Touw
Can I use <link> tags in the body of an HTML page? I tried to find the answer to this question, but found contradictory information. When adding Schema.org microdata markup to an HTML page, I want to add canonical info in a link tag like this: <div itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/Book"> <span itemprop="name">The Catcher in the Rye</span>— <link itemprop="url" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Catcher_in_the_Rye" /> by <span itemprop="author">J.D. Salinger</span> </div> I got the example code above from Schema.org. According to them, this is the way to go for people that want to add a canonical reference to an itemprop, but don't want to place a hyperlink on their website. W3 however clearly states that <link> tags should only be placed within the head section, thus making the Schema.org example invalid. If I want to stick to correct markup, which advice should I follow?

  • would it be bad to put <span> tags within the <head>, for grouping meta data in schema.org format?

    - by hdavis84
Alright, I'm currently practicing schema.org microdata, and trying to find the best route for every site I build. I have found that i can piggyback itemprops on open graph meta tags. I would like to piggyback more itemprops on opengraph meta tags. However, schema.org requires you to change itemtypes to define all aspects of a "thing". Say I'm defining a LocalBusiness. Open graph has street address, locality, and region i'd like to piggyback on. I'd have to do something like: <html lang="en" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/LocalBusiness"> <head> ... <meta itemprop="name" content="Business Name" /> <meta property="og:url" itemprop="url" content="http://example.com" /> <meta property="og:image" itemprop="image" content="http://example.com/logo.png" /> <span itemprop="address" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/PostalAddress"> <meta property="og:street-address" itemprop="streetAddress" content="1234 Amazing Rd." /> <meta property="og:locality" itemprop="addressLocality" content="Greenfield" /> <meta property="og:region" itemprop="addressRegion" content="IN" /> </span> </head> Although there's more that can be added in, this is enough of an example to show what I'm trying to achieve. I've searched the web to see if it is an issue to use spans in the head or not, because I don't want invalid markup. I know I can mark up the address information in the body of the pages, but the route above would be more efficient. Does anyone have an answer for this?

  • Why blogger puts BR tags only when content served via RSS feed?

    - by tamashumi
I have a problem with using my new blog RSS feed. I wrote a post (the first one) with some code examples formatted by SyntaxHighlighter. To paste a code sample I'm switching from WYSIWYG to HTML view and put the code inside pre tag like this (don't worry, h4 tag was opened a line above the screenshot area): The problem is that such pre tag, when later accessed via RSS feed contains br tags instead of new line characters. Below is screenshot of the adequate RSS source code: What's most important when accessed via www, the post html is formatted fine, no brs inside pre. I verified that by downloading the blog post with wget. So I believe this isn't SyntaxHighlighter issue nor any 'new line' formatting on blog post save. This is a real problem as I want aggregate my blog on employers blog and all formatting of code examples is broken because of that. The base question is: how to get rid of those unwanted brs served via RSS? What's strangest friend of mine also uses blogger for such aggregation and he has no such issue. I checked his RSS feed and there are no brs inside pre tags. We also compared settings of our blogs. However we have found no clue. The blog post RSS for the blog (just check source and search for string: pre class="brush) Mentioned friend's blog Last thing: I see content served from RSS is now also html encoded. If I remember well, it wasn't previously.

  • random data using php & mysql

    - by Prakash
I have mysql database structure like below: CREATE TABLE test ( id int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment, title text NULL, tags text NULL, PRIMARY KEY (id) ); data on field tags is stored as a comma separated text like html, php, mysql, website, html etc... now I need create an array that contains around 50 randomly selected tags from random records. currently I am using rand() to select 15 random mysql data from database and then holding all the tags from 15 records in an array. Then I am using array_rand() for randomizing the array and selecting only 50 random records. $query=mysql_query("select * from test order by id asc, RAND() limit 15"); $tags=""; while ($eachData=mysql_fetch_array($query)) { $additionalTags=$eachData['tags']; if ($tags=="") { $tags.=$additionalTags; } else { $tags.=$tags.",".$additionalTags; } } $tags=explode(",", $tags); $newTags=array(); foreach ($tags as $tag) { $tag=trim($tag); if ($tag!="") { if (!in_array($tag, $newTags)) { $newTags[]=$tag; } } } $random_newTags=array_rand($newTags, 50); Now I have huge records on the database, and because of that; rand() is performing very slow and sometimes it doesn't work. So can anyone let me know how to handle this situation correctly so that my page will work normally.

  • How can I take the first 100 characters of html content ( without stripping the TAGS! )

    - by Atomiton
There are lots of questions on how to strip html tags, but not many on functions/methods to close them. Here's the situation. I have a 500 character Message summary ( which includes html tags ), but I only want the first 100 characters. Problem is if I truncate the message, it could be in the middle of an html tag... which messes up stuff. Assuming the html is something like this: <div class="bd">"Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipisicing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. <br/> <br/>Some Dates: April 30 - May 2, 2010 <br/> <p>Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. <em>Duis aute irure dolor in reprehenderit</em> in voluptate velit esse cillum dolore eu fugiat nulla pariatur. Excepteur sint occaecat cupidatat non proident, sunt in culpa qui officia deserunt mollit anim id est laborum. <br/> </p> For more information about Lorem Ipsum doemdloe, visit: <br/> <a href="http://www.somesite.com" title="Some Conference">Some text link</a><br/> </div> How would I take the first ~100 characters or so? ( Although, ideally that would be the first approximately 100 characters of "CONTENT" ( in between the html tags ) I'm assuming the best way to do this would be a recursive algorithm that keeps track of the html tags and appends any tags that would be truncated, but that may not be the best approach. My first thoughts are using recursion to count nested tags, and when we reach 100 characters, look for the next "<" and then use recursion to write the closing html tags needed from there. The reason for doing this is to make a short summary of existing articles without requiring the user to go back and provide summaries for all the articles. I want to keep the html formatting, if possible. NOTE: Please ignore that the html isn't totally semantic. This is what I have to deal with from my WYSIWYG. EDIT: I added a potential solution ( that seems to work ) I figure others will run into this problem as well. I'm not sure it's the best... and it's probably not totally robust ( in fact, I know it isn't ), but I'd appreciate any feedback

  • HTML element that contains no formatting

Both <div> and <p> create new-lines and other things. <b> kind of does what I want, but it bolds all the text. What's the correct alternative?

  • Django cannot find my templatetags, even though it's in INSTALLED_APPS and has a __init__.py

    - by Vivian Short
I just installed django-compress (http://code.google.com/p/django-compress) into /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.6/lib/python2.6/site-packages/compress. I added 'compress' to INSTALLED_APPS. In my template file, I wrote {% load compressed %}. I got the error: 'compressed' is not a valid tag library: Could not load template library from django.templatetags.compressed, No module named compressed I verified that there is an init.py in compress, as well as in compress/templatetags/. I tried putting the compress directory into PYTHONPATH. I ran python and wrote "import compress" and that worked. Your suggestions would be very appreciated! What else can I try?

  • Just a general THANK YOU to EVERYONE. [closed]

    - by ajax81
Hi All, I really just wanted to thank everybody that participates in the stackoverflow community. On more than one occasion, your minds have saved me from soul-eating project managers and career-ending deadlines. The commendable awareness exhibited by contributors that their answers are studied/used as learning material by millions of developers all over the world has created a regulated trust that seemingly keeps the nonsense (and egos) at the bottom of the barrel and out of the way. As an up-and-coming developer with so much to learn, I am grateful for each and every one of their patient contributions. I wish I could come up with a catchy/funny sign-off that makes everybody feel good, but I lack the funny bone that so many of the people on this site seem to have been born with. Instead, I can only leave my gratitude and a promise that as long as the community stays this great, I'll stay an avid reader...and one day be experienced enough to carry the torch of contribution. Sincerely, Daniel the Intern

  • Why meta refresh followed by 2 redirects?

    - by twneale
I have encountered several websites where the initial visit by a user results in a http-equiv refresh to another (usually gibberish) url, which then promptly redirects (302) to another gibberish url, which in turn immediately redirects to yet a fourth url that actually displays the landing page for the site. My question is: what the heck? Why would a server be set up to behave this way? Here is list of a few sites that do this: New York State Library - http://nysl.nysed.gov New York State Regulations provided by Westlaw - http://government.westlaw.com/linkedslice/default.asp?SP=nycrr-1000

  • Django and floatformat tag

    - by Hellnar
    Hello, I want to modify / change the way the floatformat works. By default it changes the input decimal as such: {{ 1.00|floatformat }} -> 1 {{ 1.50|floatformat }} -> 1.5 {{ 1.53|floatformat }} -> 1.53 I want to change this abit as such: If there is a floating part, it should keep the first 2 floating digits. If no floating (which means .00) it should simply cut out the floating part. IE: {{ 1.00|floatformat }} -> 1 {{ 1.50|floatformat }} -> 1.50 {{ 1.53|floatformat }} -> 1.53

I am trying for a search query performs AND logic on the search keywords and returns wvery such class for which the search terms are present in the class name or its tutor name To make it easy, following is the list of search terms and desired results:- Search term result classes (check the id_wc in the results) first class 1 Sandeepan Nath class 1 Sandeepan Nath 1,3 Bob Cratchit 2 Sandeepan Nath bob none Sandeepan Class 1,4,5 I have so far reached upto this query -- Two keywords search SET @tag1 = 4, @tag2 = 1; -- Setting some user variables to see where the ids go. Tabulating my observation of the values of key_1_class_matches, key_2_class_matches,key_1_tutor_matches (say, class keys),key_2_tutor_matches for various cases (say, tutor keys). Search term expected result Observation first class 1 for class 1, all class keys+all tutor keys =1 Sandeepan Nath class 1 for class 1, one class key+ all tutor keys = 1 Sandeepan Nath 1,3 both tutor keys =1 for these classes Bob Cratchit 2 both tutor keys = 1 Sandeepan Nath bob none no complete tutor matches for any class I found a pattern that, for any case, the class(es) which should appear in the result have the highest number of matches (all class keys and tutor keys). E.g. searching "first class", only for class =1, total of key matches = 4(1+1+1+1) searching "Sandeepan Nath", for classes 1, 3,4(all classes by Sandeepan Nath) have all the tutor keys matching. But no pattern in the search for "Sandeepan Class" - classes 1,4,5 should match. Now, how do I put a condition into the query, based on that pattern so that only those classes are returned. Do I need to use full text search here because it gives a scoring/rank value indicating the strength of the match? Any sample query would help. Please note - I have already found solution for showing classes when any/all of the search terms match with the class name. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3030022/mysql-help-me-alter-this-search-query-to-get-desired-results But if all the search terms are in tutor name, it does not work. So, I am modifying the query and experimenting.

Please dump these data first CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `all_tag_relations` ( `id_tag_rel` int(10) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `id_tag` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL DEFAULT '0', `id_tutor` int(10) DEFAULT NULL, `id_wc` int(10) unsigned DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id_tag_rel`), KEY `All_Tag_Relations_FKIndex1` (`id_tag`), KEY `id_wc` (`id_wc`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=19 ; INSERT INTO `all_tag_relations` (`id_tag_rel`, `id_tag`, `id_tutor`, `id_wc`) VALUES (1, 1, 1, NULL), (2, 2, 1, NULL), (3, 6, 2, NULL), (4, 7, 2, NULL), (8, 3, 1, 1), (9, 4, 1, 1), (10, 5, 2, 2), (11, 4, 2, 2), (15, 8, 1, 3), (16, 9, 1, 3), (17, 10, 1, 4), (18, 4, 1, 4), (19, 1, 2, 5), (20, 4, 2, 5); CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `tags` ( `id_tag` int(10) unsigned NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `tag` varchar(255) DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id_tag`), UNIQUE KEY `tag` (`tag`), KEY `id_tag` (`id_tag`), KEY `tag_2` (`tag`), KEY `tag_3` (`tag`), KEY `tag_4` (`tag`), FULLTEXT KEY `tag_5` (`tag`) ) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=11 ; INSERT INTO `tags` (`id_tag`, `tag`) VALUES (1, 'Sandeepan'), (2, 'Nath'), (3, 'first'), (4, 'class'), (5, 'new'), (6, 'Bob'), (7, 'Cratchit'), (8, 'more'), (9, 'fresh'), (10, 'second'); CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `webclasses` ( `id_wc` int(10) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT, `id_author` int(10) NOT NULL, `name` varchar(50) DEFAULT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`id_wc`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=5 ; INSERT INTO `webclasses` (`id_wc`, `id_author`, `name`) VALUES (1, 1, 'first class'), (2, 2, 'new class'), (3, 1, 'more fresh'), (4, 1, 'second class'), (5, 2, 'sandeepan class'); About the system - The system consists of tutors and classes. - The data in the table All_Tag_Relations stores tag relations for each tutor registered and each class created by a tutor. The tag relations are used for searching classes. The current data dump corresponds to tutor "Sandeepan Nath" who has created classes named "first class", "more fresh", "second class" and tutor "Bob Cratchit" who has created classes "new class" and "Sandeepan class". SELECT wc.id_wc, sum( DISTINCT ( wtagrels.id_tag = @tag1 ) ) AS key_1_class_matches, sum( DISTINCT ( wtagrels.id_tag = @tag2 ) ) AS key_2_class_matches, sum( DISTINCT ( ttagrels.id_tag = @tag1 ) ) AS key_1_tutor_matches, sum( DISTINCT ( ttagrels.id_tag = @tag2 ) ) AS key_2_tutor_matches, sum( DISTINCT ( ttagrels.id_tag = wtagrels.id_tag ) ) AS key_class_tutor_matches FROM WebClasses as wc join all_tag_relations AS wtagrels on wc.id_wc = wtagrels.id_wc join all_tag_relations as ttagrels on (wc.id_author = ttagrels.id_tutor) WHERE ( wtagrels.id_tag = @tag1 OR wtagrels.id_tag = @tag2 OR ttagrels.id_tag = @tag1 OR ttagrels.id_tag = @tag2 ) GROUP BY wtagrels.id_wc LIMIT 0 , 20 For search with 1 or 3 terms, remove/add the variable part in this query.
