• Quick ways to boost performance and scalability of ASP.NET, WCF and Desktop Clients

  There are some simple configuration changes that you can make on machine.config and IIS to give your web applications significant performance boost. These are simple harmless changes but makes a lot of difference in terms of scalability. By tweaking system.net changes, you can increase the number of parallel calls that can be made from the services hosted on your servers as well as on desktop computers and thus increase scalability. By changing WCF throttling config you can increase number of simultaneous calls WCF can accept and thus make most use of your hardware power. By changing ASP.NET process model, you can increase number of concurrent requests that can be served by your website. And finally by turning on IIS caching and dynamic compression, you can dramatically increase the page download speed on browsers and and overall responsiveness of your applications. • Program to Hide/show Given window with hotkey?

  Hi, I'm fairly sure this program exists, but I don't remember what it was called. There are a few drop-down terminal programs (guake, yakuke, tilde), and I've been a fan of guake for a while. However, since I discovered GNU Screen I've been more interested in using Eterm. But I would like to make it dropdown/hide on keypress, similar to the way Guake does. I remember at some point that someone mentioned a program that allowed you to do similar things with basically any other window. Unfortunately my time spent googling around for terms like "show/hide any terminal ubuntu" have been met with stupid Windows search engine spam. Any clue where I could find the program I'm looking for? Thanks!

Since it's on the free site - I didn't want to violate any terms of agreement - so it doesn't mention Oracle explicitly. But if you wanted to actually do what the animation talks about with Oracle database - you need to configure the Oracle database to use Oracle Enterprise User Security. EUS requires OVD or OID and works with most popular LDAP servers including Active Directory and of course our newest Oracle Directory member - Directory Server Enterprise Edition (aka the former Sun directory). • What are Silverlight, WCF RIA services or applications?

  I asked a question here on programmers yesterday about learning HTML & CSS and the community was pretty generous to provide great answers. One of the answers was given by Emmad Kareem and that was : "if you can't do HTML, don't give up. Consider using Silverlight". This answer made me visit Silverlight.net and I came across the terms WCF RIA Services, Silverlight applications. After going through the website and some articles on website i am unable to draw a conclusive understanding on what this is all about. Is this another way of building websites using .NET, and is just like another framework like ASP.NET MVC3. What scenario's and requirements are basically targeted to silverlight applications or we are free to use either of Asp.net MVC or Silverlight in any web-application requirements.

• Why do we need fork to create new process

  In Unix whenever we want to create a new process, we fork the current process i.e. we create a new child process which is exactly the same as the parent process and then we do exec system call to replace the child process with a new process i.e. we replace all the data for the parent process eith that for the new process. Why do we create a copy of the parent process in the first place and why don't we create a new process directly? I am new to Unix please explain in lay-man terms.

• Box2D Static-Dynamic body joint eliminates collisions

  I have a static body A, and a dynamic body B, and a dynamic body C. A is filtered to not collide with anything, B and C collide with each other. I wish to create a joint between B and A. When I create a joint (ex. revolute), B no longer collides with C - C passes through it as if it does not exist. What am I doing wrong? How can adding a joint prevent a body from colliding with another body it used to? EDIT: I want to join B with A, and have B collide with C, but not A collide with C. In realistic terms, I'm trying to create a revolute joint between a wheel (B) and a wall (A), and have a box (C) hit the wheel and the wheel would then rotate. • Uploading to a PPA using quickly

  I am trying to participate in ubuntu showdown. I followed Jono's tutorial to do a browser using quickly. I did some modifications including choosing license (gpl v3), putting my name in copy right ( without special spanish charecters since quicky does not like it) $quickly run to make sure it worked I used bazaar to commit a change with a line of comment. I packaged it using quickly. Managed to install it ignoring some warnings but it would not run. I want to share code to get feedback. I have a launchpad account, signed terms and coditions, created a ppa. I got my commandline to talk to lauchpad using the encription key. But when I run $quickly release or $quickly share and it says the project does not exist. There seems to be another command $dput ... But i don't seem to get the wording right because it requests some sort of signed file that i cannot manage to add the correct way.

• Making an Ubuntu installation disc UEFI bootable

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a machine with UEFI (Windows 8). Following Rod Books, I managed to get my system to boot using rEFInd. However rEFInd does not offer me any options to boot from my Ubuntu installer disc. Another thing...after following Rod Books' instructions, my machine greeted me with something along the lines of "The bootloader is not trusted" (my usage of the term "bootloader" is possibly wrong; I'm not well-acquainted with these terms) I got to work around this by setting up some passwords in the BIOS and putting the renamed .efi of rEFInd to the trusted list. While in this screen, it showed me the drives with a possible .efi (among them, the drive S in Rod Books' guide) and one of the drives it showed was my optical drive with an Ubuntu installer. I tried browsing for an .efi in the Ubuntu installer but found none. True enough, at Windows, I searched the drive for an .efi but found none. So how do I make my Ubuntu installer UEFI bootable?

  Hi, beginner developer here (around 1-1.5 years of experience). I've recently got an iOs development offer and also an opportunity to start career at embedded development (at another company). I'd be grateful for general thoughts on mobile and embedded development perspectives in a few years, just general advices, or may be links to good articles and discussions on the topic. Both choices have personal pros and cons in terms of interest, salary and what's not and I'm stuck with this atm. Also, I live in a almost purely outsorcing country (Ukraine), this probably matters too. Thank you for any help.

• Universal navigation menu across domains - would it be considered duplicate content?

  Across different sites on different second-level domains exists a universal navigation bar with a collection of roughly 30 links. This universal bar is exactly the same for every page on each domain. The bar's HTML, CSS and JavaScript are all stored in a subfolder for each domain and the HTML is embedded upon serving the page and is not being injected on the client side. None of the links use any rel directives and are as vanilla as can be. My question is about Google's duplicate content rule. Would something like this be considered duplicate content? Matt Cutt's blog post about duplicate content mentions boilerplate repetition, but then he mentions lengthy legalese. Since the text in this universal bar is brief and uses common terms, I wonder if this same rule applies. If this is considered duplicate content, what would be a good way to correct the problem?

  I'm seeking a nice complete open source django application to study and learn best practices from, or even use as a template. The tutorials only go so far, and django is super flexible which can lead one to paining themselves into a corner. Ideally such a template / example would: Ignore django admin, and implement full CRUD outside the admin. Be built like a large application in terms of best practices and patterns. • VirtualBox

  I was wanting to play around with something in a VM the other day.  I was curious what was available for free, if anything, for windows.   I quickly came across Virtual Box  ( http://www.virtualbox.org/ ).   Downloaded, Installed. No Problem!  Works really nicely.   It was commercial software (by sun (now oracle)) that turned open source.   In terms of a license it says :- In summary, the VirtualBox PUEL allows you to use VirtualBox free of charge for personal use or, alternatively, for product evaluation. An interesting feature it has is built in RDP.   Which is useful if you have a guest OS that doesn’t support RDP.   Speaking of RDP…..  which I will in my next blog post… I learnt something REALLY useful the other day.

• Is there a “P” programming language? [closed]

  I’m wondering if anybody has made a programming language based on BCPL, named P. There was a language named B that was based on BCPL, followed of course by C, also based on BCPL. I’ve seen plenty of whimsically named programming languages, so I can’t help but be surprised if nobody made one called P. I checked the Wikipedia’s—not exactly comprehensive—list of programming languages, and while there are three languages named L (none of which are related to BCPL), there are none called P—in fact, it is one of the only letters not used as a name. (Google is useless for one-letter query terms.) Does anybody know if a P has been made, even as a lark. (Yes, I know about P#, but that is based on Prolog, not BCPL; there is one called P, but it is also not related to BCPL.)

• How do I handle 3rd party search result data (via cache)

  I have a search function on my site and it is taking data from 6 different 3rd party resources. The problem is, it takes too long requesting the data over and over again on the results page. I've read for questions like this on SO about session not being a good choice but for me 'memcache' is not an option, because the server doesn't have memcached installed and I have no way to install it now. Is there any other approach to do this? Storing in the database seem inappropriate because the data depends on the search terms requested. What I've been thinking is writing a file on the server that would act as a cache for this file but I don't know how I would know when to delete it after.

• Am I allowed to display a small image on top of a Google Maps Static Api map?

  I am the webmaster to my company's website. I was asked to make the Google Map on this page smaller, but the interactive map doesn't work well at all at 300x200. I was asked to place a screenshot there but since that seems to be a violation of Google's terms I decided to use the Static Maps API. As you can see, on the page, I have a custom pointer icon. I don't want to lose it, so I intend to use HTML and CSS to place the pointer over the map, thus replacing the original pointer on the client side. Am I allowed to do that?

• Choosing 3D modeling software Maya or 3D max?

  I've am a developer whose has spent most of my programming life developing web and business applications. I want to try my hand at something more challenging (but stay in the comfort of Visual Studio) ...perhaps XNA. Want 3D modeling software would be best for someone developing XNA? I have played with 3d MAX and Maya but never really did anything too involved. What are the pros and cons between them (in terms of game development)? Does one win out over the other for game development? Or is it pretty much just preference? I am new to game development and just trying to figure out the best tools to use before I really started. Any advice or other suggections would be greatly appreciated.
