  • Microkernel architectural pattern and applicability for business applications

    We are in the business of building customizable web applications. We have the core team that provides what we call as the core platform (provides services like security, billing etc.) on top of which core products are built. These core products are industry specific solutions like telecom, utility etc. These core products are later used by other teams to build customer specific solutions in a particular industry. Until now we have a loose separation between platform and core product. The customer specific solutions are build by customizing 20-40% of the core offering and re-packaging. The core-platform and core products are released together as monolithic apps (ear). I am looking to improvise the current situation so that there is a cleaner separation on these 3. This allows us to have evolve each of these 3 separately etc. I've read through the Mircokernel architecture and kind of felt that I can take apply the principles in my context. But most of my reading about this pattern is always in the context of operating systems or application servers etc. I am wondering if there are any examples on how that pattern was used for architecting business applications. Or you could provide some insight on how to apply that pattern to my problem.

  • Wrapping up an Exciting Mobile World Congress

    Its been a busy week here in Barcelona, with noticeably more energy at the show than in 2010. This year, we decided to move the Java booth to the App Planet and really engage with the increasing number of developers that are attending the event. Our booth featured 10 demos and a series of nearly 25 workshops featuring a variety of topics ranging from information about Java Verified, to the use of web technologies with Java ME, to sessions hosted by Operators such as Orange and Telefonica (see image to the left).One of the more popular topics in our booth was the use of Java in the Smart Grid. In our booth we were showing off some of the work of the Hydra Consortium whose goal it is to leverage the emerging smart grid infrastructure to securely enable the delivery of personal health data (weight, blood pressure, etc) from the home to your doctor. I wrote about Placecast doing this for The North Face, noting that the messages were a unique combination of both offers and useful information about outdoor activities. After creating a program with European carrier O2, Placecast recently entered into an agreement to provide similar services to AT&T customers.  The ShopAlerts program allows AT&T customers in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, and San Francisco opt-in to receive these messages.  The program will be expanded nationwide as early as this summer. It’s a much better model for customers (and Placecast) to sign-up once with the carrier instead of each individual retailer, but I hope the messages aren’t restricted to advertising.  I really the like the idea of providing other information, such as nearby special events, races, and perhaps even things to avoid like construction.

  • How to get feedback on mobile application

    I am relatively new to programming. I have been programming with Java and Android for about 2 years now and just recently released my first app to the Google Play app store. I have passed the word on to everyone I know and posted a few times on Facebook about it. But I am not really seeing anyone install them. I love to code I'm not looking to have the next big time app, but it would be nice to get some installs and feedback/ratings so I can get an idea of how well its doing and if there are any fixes or improvements I can make. I thought about doing an AdMob campaign a couple times here and there at about $10 to $20 per day. But I'm not sure if that will generate any kind of worthwhile feedback. What other things could I be doing in order to get some feedback on my application? Thanks in advance for your help and suggestions.

  • Choosing a crossplatform for mobile development

    I am creating a enterprise project and will develop the app for WP, Android and IPhone (Maybe also tablets) I have then done some research of what solutions are out there and have narrowed my choice down to 3 platforms (Due to my requirement to work with Bluetooth) The biggest requirement other than Bluetooth is the need to create good interfaces and module programming so its easy to maintain the whole solution, other than that I would like to use C# but its not a real requirement, but if the difference between 2 platforms is very small then it might tip the scale. Mono (MonoTouch, Mono for android) PhoneGap RhoMobile From my understanding then PhoneGap is not suited for business apps and I am not entirely sure why, but it seems like a platform made for speed rather than long term developement, not sure how true this is. RhoMobile is made for enterprice and might suit my needs, but not sure if its a good platform Anyone with insight that care to share their opinion Mono is C#, seems to be very mature and I found MvvmCross which should help organize the project

  • Cloud service and IM protocol advice, for a backend to group chat mobile app

    Overview I’m going to develop an app on Android and iOS. It will allow users to set up group ‘chat rooms’ and talk on chat rooms set up by other users. The service needs to be highly scalable, such that it could accommodate a massive increase in users overnight (we can only dream). Chat requirements The chat protocol used should be flexible: it should allow me to determine who can view/post on ‘chat rooms’ based on certain other factors, as determined by the first poster/creator of the particular ‘chat room’. It should also allow for users to simply install the app and begin using the service, after only providing a simple nickname (which could be changed later). Chat protocol plans Having looked around I think the XMPP protocol is the best candidate. In particular the Multi-user chat extension looks like what I’ll need. Would this be most suited to my requirements, or do you know another potential solution? Cloud service I have been deciding between Amazon Web Services, Google App Engine and Windows Azure. I’m coming to the conclusion that Azure will be best, as it is easier to manage than AWS (ease of scalability will be a key factor in the design), I think it may be less restricted than GAE, plus Azure will soon have toolkits to allow easy interfacing with both Android and iOS phones. Is this the decision you would have made, or would you recommend/look into other cloud services? General project philosophy I have only recently started looking into this project’s feasibility, and am no expert on any of its aspects. So wherever possible I will leave the actual implementations to experts, i.e. choosing a higher-level cloud service, using a well-documented plugin of a, proven reliable, group chat protocol etc. My background I have some programming knowledge from a computer science degree. Main languages I’ve used have been Java and Python, but I don’t want this to affect design decisions for the project. The most appropriate languages for the task should be used, i.e. I don’t mind learning a lot of new skills (my current programming levels are relatively basic anyway).   • Can't change settings for Mobile Broadband Dongle - Button is greyed out

    I was with VirginBroadband.com.au (Australia). My huawai 3G Dongle was working great on Ubuntu, However I have changed ISP's. I unlocked the modem, and put in the new SIM. I have tested this in my Windows PC and it connects to the new (Optus) Network A-OK and it all works. When I put this dongle (the same one that was working fine in Ubuntu) into that same Ubuntu Netbook it simply won't connect. When I try to go into the dialog to try and add or change settings the button to change or update settings is greyed out, I can't select it. Apparently since this dongle was already recognized the Broadband Setup Wizard won't start, and I have no idea how to get it to start (presuming it has the ability to configure an already recognized dongle). What do I have to do to either enable the ability to change the configuration for this setup, or to blow away the one that is set up so the Broadband Wizard will re-start and let me configure a new one. Can anyone provide simple instructions for doing this? I'm using Ubuntu with the Cinnamon Desktop

  • Making simple forms in web applications

    How do you work with forms in your web applications? I am not talking about RESTful applications, I don't want to build heavy front-end using frameworks like Backbone. For example, I need to add "contact us" form. I need to check data which was filled by user and tell him that his data was sent. Requirements: I want to use AJAX. I want to validate form on back-end side and don't want to duplicate the same code on front-end side. I have my own solution, but it doesn't satisfy me. I make an AJAX request with serialized data on form submit and get response. The next is checking "Content-type" header. html - It means that errors with filling form are exists and response html is form with error labels. - I will replace my form with response html. json and response.error_code == 0 - It means that form was successfully submited. - I will show user notification about success. json and response.error_code != 0 - Something was broken on back-end (like connection with database). other - I display the following message : We have been notified and have started to work with that problem. Please, try it later. The problem of that way is that I can't use it with forms that upload file. What is your practise? What libraries and principles do you use?

This is for instance important where you have per-device licensing restrictions. For Win8 store apps, You can use ASHWID (Application Specific Hardware Identifier).     Given that I am a PHP programmer and open-source is a must, what would be the best and practical programming language to use for all of the following: A desktop/cross-platform application. I've read that with HTML5, creating offline apps are possible? A web application. Android and iPhone/iPad apps. I am leaning towards using Python but I am not sure if it is possible to use it alone for all of them. There are other languages that I am also looking at like Ruby, Scala and Java.
