  • Quickly set up a Windows Server and automatically install and configure software

    Yesterday I spent far too much time downloading and installing software on Windows Server 2008. I only had to install a simple server for SQL Server 2008 Express using Microsoft's Web Platform Installer, then configure it to enable remote connections. Everything had to be attended, wasting my time. On a Linux system, this would be trivial to automate, but this is Windows. I do this very rarely, but in the future I would like to make this take as little time as possible. I could do a disc image with everything I installed and configured, but is there a better way? I know nothing of advanced deployment techniques on Windows. Ideally I would like to be able to remotely re-install the OS, or have an unattended install (which I know is possible). Any tips to make the software I need easier to and install and configure with minimal interaction necessary would be helpful. I don't expect everything I asked for to be possible and easy to do. Basically, If any part of it can be done quicker or at least without user input, that's what I'm looking for.

  • EventID 1058 Code 5, Sysvol is subdir of Sysvol - how to fix?

    I have been trying to resolve this error, like many others: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \domain.local\SysVol\domain.local\Policies{3EF90CE1-6908-44EC-A750-F0BA70548600}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following: a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller. b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller). c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled. Error code: 5 = Access Denied. Quoting from this post: HERE IS A LIST OF POTENTIAL PROBLEMS THAT CAN LEAD TO 1030 AND 1058 EVENT ERRORS: --Sometimes the permissions of the file folders that contain Group policies (the Sysvol folder) can be corrupted. --Sometimes you have problems with NetBIOS: --Sometimes the GPO itself is corrupt, or you have a partial set of data for that GPO. --Sometimes you may have problems with File Replication Services, which almost always indicates a problem with DNS --Sysvol may be a subfolder of itself: Sysvol/Sysvol I have the problem listed where sysvol is a subfolder of sysvol. The directory structure is: -sysvol -domain -staging -staging areas -sysvol (shared as "\\server\sysvol") -domain.local -ClientAgent -Policies -scripts Interestingly, the second sysvol folder is the one that is shared as "\server\sysvol". This makes me confident this is the issue with the permissions and error code 5. Also interestingly, my server 2008 R2 servers can see it fine - my server 2008 servers cannot, and get the error. This is consistent across all my servers. This latter fact makes me uncertain what I need to do to fix this up. Do I, e.g., simply move the shared sysvol folder up a level to replace the non-shared one? Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers, Tim.

    I'm creating a new template to create reports from at a later date. I know how to create one, and I know where to save it. However, the problem is this. Everything that is created on the report uses the default font of Arial with a size of 10pt. I need to set mine to default to Tahoma 11pt. I can create a mock title, mock tables, etc and save those to Tahoma 11pt, but any new controls that are used on any version of this report will default back to Arial 10pt. How do I fix this?

    Not sure what's happening with this, but here's my question. I have a Sql Server 2008 database that I need to be able to do full-text indexing/searching but when I try to setup my indices on the table, I get the following: I've tried running this stored procedure on my database and it's successful: EXEC sp_fulltext_database @action = 'enable' But I still get the above window and my full-text searches don't return any results when they should. What am I missing?

My question is if the database is automatically converted to 64bit after it is reattached on the new server or if it is running in 32bit mode on a 64bit instance. Is there a way to tell?

  • Removing offline/defunct files in SQL server 2008

    How to remove traces of files marked as OFFLINE or DEFUNCT in Microsoft SQL server 2008? I have been playing around with a setup where I create a database with 3 file-groups which are: Primary, FileGroupData and FileGroupIndex. The clustered index is using FileGroupData and a non-clustered index is set to use FileGroupIndex. To simulate a disk failure I've shut down SQL server and manually deleted the files in index file-group. To start the database I'll mark the files 'OFFLINE', but after that I can't delete the index files, which are now offline. I don't have backup of the files as they are merely indices, but that has the implication that I can't restore the files and have their status as "ONLINE". How would you recommend removing the files and the file-group as they still show up in management studio under files/file-groups. Management studio is not able to delete them. While executing that query on quite a big table (16 GB) I have an error: An error occurred while executing batch. Error message is: Not enough disk space.     Yesterday I moved my machine from one domain to another - foolishly forgetting the implications for my local instance of SQL Server! Mixed Mode authentication is not enabled, and the only local account login has only "public" permissions. SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 had a tool called the User Provisioning Tool for Windows Vista (sqlprov.exe) which allowed you to add Domain Users to a local SQL 2005 instance (it doesn't work against SQL 2008 btw) - my question is.. is there a similar tool for SQL Server 2008 or am I going to have to do a reinstall? Also let me know if you think this belongs on StackOverflow

  • Unable to connect to local SQL Express (2008)

    I'm trying to get an installation of SQL Express 2008 working, but no matter what I do I can't connect to it with management studio. I've enabled TCP/IP for the instance. I've tried connecting with machinename\instance, .\instance, (local), etc etc etc. Nothing works, and I always get the same message. If I browse for a server, the only server listed is the local integration services, which I can connect to just fine. The SQL server service is running (SQLEXPRESS), SQL Server Agent is not (and won't, can't enable it), and SQL Server Browser is. Anyone have any suggestions on where to go next? I've tried uninstalling EVERYTHING sql and reinstalling, no change.

    Hi, I have a MS Access 97 application (but the question is general) working directly with SQL Server 2008 (without application server or anything). Numbers of users can be up to 1000. Windows Authentication is used. The question is: How to handle modes, so some users will be allowed to work in read-only mode some users won't have access to db for some time My versions: Using a table with a mode id for every group of users, that will work the same way. On Form Load application will query that table for mode id. Using trigger on the tables, that must work according to that mode. The trigger will query mode value and doesn't work if access is closed or it's in read-only mode I know these are not the best solutions, that's why I'm asking for your advice. There's one more point. If the mode is changed to "access-is-closed" for a group of users, that group must not be able to query to DB starting that moment. With first solution I wrote it won't work, because user can be in application at that moment and no form load event will work. How can I do this? Is there any optimal solution? Thank you. Any help would be appreciated.
