• Is an Intel Atom D525 suitable to run MythTV

  I have an oldish netbook with an Atom N450 (1.6GHz, 512KB cache) - I've been using it to experiment with MythTV, but it seems really slow, even just to work through the menus! Seconds, sometimes 10 or 20s, to load a new menu. Admittedly from a remote backend, but my older Core1 based laptop seems to be fine with the same setup. I was hoping to use one of the so-called "nettop" devices which currently seem to be D525-based (1.8GHz, 1MB cache) - is double the cache really going to make that much difference? Or has the internal architecture of the Atom moved on leaps and bounds in between? Given that I design non-Intel embedded computers for a living I was hoping to get lots of hardcore architecture detail from the Intel website, so I could see for myself, but I can't find it! So: will a D525 be fast enough to run a MythTV backend/frontend combined box?

• Is it possible to run Modern UI Apps in Windows 7

  It seems like a basic question, but is there a way to run Windows 8 (Modern Apps) in Windows 7 (without a VM, that seems like cheating)? My hunch is that it would be possible with some sort of hack, as the code is written in the same .Net languages as many other programs. The only issue would be intercepting the finger to corner gestures, but I am not sure how much is there really (is it just a location, or a special win API call). Is there software that can do this, or options that need to be changed to make this work?

• Getting PHP to work with apache to run .php files through browser

  I have VPS running Debian 5.0 (I think) and I would like to get it to run PHP files. I was told it needed to be configured with Apache. I tried entering the command apt-get install apache2 php5 libapache2-mod-php5. But there was no change. • Run Python Server at Startup

  Hello, I've got a few Python based servers that I need to run, and would like them to start automatically when I start my Ubuntu Server box. What is the best way to execute them like this? I was hoping I could write a Bash script and use Screen to get them running in the background, where I can check on them every now and then, but where as echo screen -d -m python works just fine, echo screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py` doesn't, with no error messages. Is that something to do with the spaces? Even though I did surround it with backquotes? I also tried: WEB="screen -d -m `sudo python /home/matt/tornadoServer/tornadoDeploy.py`" echo $WEB As a way of escaping the spaces, but no luck. What's Bash scripting way to do this? And, once the Bash script works, where can I put it to make it execute on startup?

  Hello, I would like to know what the damage to a drive can be if a scandisk is not performed before a disk defrag. I have looked up some sites that say a scandisk should be run to correct any issues that may be apparent on the system, making sure that the drive is free of errors before a disk defrag is done. I have to perform a defrag on a computer without having physical access to it (using remote connection). I know that the scandisk requires a reboot to the system (causing me to lose my connection) which would be difficult to restart physically if the system does not come back on by itself once rebooted (this has happened before). Any suggestions? Thank you.

It is primarily used in conjunction with pipes and filters." I run echo FRAMEBUFFER=y | sudo tee /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash twice. I opened the conf.d folder in Nautilus, but there isn't a splash file nor directory. I expected a file to be there with FRAMEBUFFER=y inside but there isn't. Is this going to be a problem?

• PSKill does not run from VbScript

  We have a site on our local IIS6 Windows 2003 server that occasionally locks up, and we would like a VbScript to kill the process. It is located in the system32 folder. I'm running these tests on the local machine. For simplicity, my VbScript file simply has lines such as these: WScript.Echo "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WshShell.Run "PSKill.exe " & W3WP.ProcessId WScript.Echo "Killed Process" Obtained earlier in the script, W3WP.ProcessId contains the correct process ID. The script outputs to the screen: PSKill.exe 6884 But the line that is supposed to execute the command does nothing. If I type the command in, it works fine. Why does PsKill work fine when I type it, but not from VbScript?

  I have a linux box running Debian server with minimal number of packages (so no GUI for network management). The box has two ethernet cards, one of which (eth0) is connected to a Mac OSX computer using a cross-cable. I can bring up eth0 and assign a static ip (10.10.11.16) to it. This way I can ssh to the box through the cross-cable. This is what I run on Linux box: ifconfig eth0 10.10.11.16 netmask 255.255.255.0 up I also installed/started a file server (AFS) on Debian. So far, the file server can only be accessed through eth1 which is exposed to my home LAN and www. My goal is to set up the file server so that it's only visible through eth0. Is this possible? and if yes, how can I do it?

I'm on a really tight budget (no profit) so ClamAV seem like a good choice. What is the best way to run ClamAV under these circumstances? I'm concidering the following options: Just running the raw windows build from http://sourceforge.net/projects/clamav/ an setup definition updates with task scheduler. Any way to automate updates of the scanner (binaries)? Using a "distro" like ClamWin or Immunet (advertised on clamav.net). Any suggestions are welcome.

• Server 2008 won't run executables from CMD prompt without .exe extension

  On one of our production server 2008 boxes, I cannot run executables from a CMD prompt without supplying the full filename, including the '.exe' extension. For example, when running "java" produced the usual "is not recognized as an internal or external command" message, I assumed I had borked the path and/or java_home variables. However, even navigating to the %java_home%\bin directory and typing "java" produced the same error. If I type "java.exe" instead, all works perfectly. The problem does not only affect java.exe. Even Microsoft executables suffer the same problem -- ping fails, ping.exe works; ipconfig fails, ipconfig.exe works; manually created batch file 'test' only works when invoked explicitly as 'test.bat'. Any bright ideas?

• 3 wire computer fan won't run continuously

  I had an old computer that didn't work anymore, so I took the CPU fan out to see what I could make with it. The fan is NMB model number BG0903-B044-VTL, like this. It has three wires coming off of it, red, black, and white. I know that the white wire is usually a speed sensor. Does this wire need to be connected to something in order for the fan to run continuously? Right now when I apply power to the red and black wires (from a 9-volt battery) the fan will spin very briefly, and then slow down until it stops. The fan's motor only spins in the instant that the power is turned on, but doesn't continue, even though the power is still applied. How can I get the fan to spin continuously?

  Background: I created a wim image that we are planning to deploy to some of our computers, but when I image a computer with it from a flash drive it continually reports that the BOOTMGR is missing (and no, it's not booting off the flash drive). I am able to resolve this by running Windows Startup Repair, but I would rather just add whatever command is resolving the issue to a script that runs after the image. I have already tried running fixmbr, fixboot, rebuildbcd, and nt60, but none of those resolve the issue. Basically, I would like to know what exactly is being done when I run Windows Startup Repair.

• Can't run .net software on Samsung Omnia Pro B7330

  I've got a Samsung Omnia Pro B7330, and am unable to run any program for .net compact framework on it. My last three Smartphones had been HTC brand, and all the programs I tried are just simple winform apps, which ran on all HTC phones. But not on the Omnia. Whenever I try to start an app, I get an "unexpected error" / "NotSupportedException" at: Microsoft.AGL.Common.MISC.HandleArt() System.Windows.Forms.Control._InitInstalce() System.Windows.Forms.Control..ctor() System.Windows.Forms.Button..ctor() MyApp.InitializeComponents() The proper compact framework 2.0 is already installed in the rom, installing CF 3.5 didn't change anything. • Permissions to run a SharePoint 2010 Application Pool?

  I'm currently in the process of setting up a SharePoint 2010 farm. In my Dev Environments, I have one account that is Local Admin, Farm Administrator and runs all Application Pools. For Production Environment, I would like to go with best Security Practices and run the Web Applications (At least 2: Main Portal and My Sites) with separate Domain Accounts. It's been some time that I worked with IIS, and I remember that there were issues with accessing files in c:\inetpub by non-Admin users. On the other hand, SharePoint "automagically" sets most permissions anyway. Does anyone have some experience with which permissions I need to give to the domain account at minimum in order to work?

  Hello, this is a home setup. A central printer server (Linux) manages the queue, a HP 2430DTN is attached to it via 100Mbit/sec Ethernet. The printer is hooked up to a managable power source. A shell script watches the queue on the server (lpstat -o) and turn on the printer when there is a job. If the queue is empty for 10 minutes it turns the printer off. Now this setup messes up, stops the printer etc. after a couple of weeks and is in general "not so reliable". I now know how to change the stop-printer thing, but: Is there a way to run my turn printer on script and turn printer off script directly from cups without watching the queue? That would be so cool!

• How to set specific environment variables for Apache service run on Windows

  I'm facing a problem. I use xampp 1.7.7 on Windows which installs a Apache service. I find that I have to some tweak to have all PHP modules load properly. For example, php_ldap.dll cannot be loaded. It is mysterious why it cannot be loaded until I tried to run httpd.exe from command line, which reveals that libsasl.dll cannot be founded. Actually, there exist D:\xampp\php\libsasl.dll but httpd.exe cannot find it. OK. The best way is to add D:\xampp\php to PATH env-var. Now my question is: How do I set a specific PATH value for that specific Apache service but not system wide. -- because I think it is better not to disturb other processes with that extra PATH value. Is there a general way to do that for a specific Windows service? or, is there a Apache specific way to load extra env-var settings from some specific configuration files?

• "killed" message from cron.daily, but not when run from command line

  On Fedora 17, I put a file into /etc/cron.daily with the following contents: cd / su dstahlke /home/dstahlke/bin/anacron-daily.sh exit 0 For some reason, I get a mail every day that just says /etc/cron.daily/dstahlke-daily: ...killed. I tried with and without the exit 0 line above (I noticed that some system scripts have that and others don't, I'm not sure of the purpose). Running /etc/cron.daily/dstahlke-daily from the command line as root produces no ...killed message. Other than the message, everything seems to work fine. Putting set -x in the above script, as well as in the /home/dstahlke/bin/anacron-daily.sh script shows that the ...killed message happens just after the latter script terminates (or perhaps just after the su command finishes). What causes the ...killed message? Or, is there a more acceptable way to have anacron run a user script daily? I figured that putting this in /etc/cron.daily would help the system coordinate all of the daily tasks rather than potentially running my task concurrently with the system tasks.

• Run disk error check on NTFS file?

  I have a feeling that my system hard drive is dying. Benchmark kind of enforces it. Here is the benchmark of my system hard drive during low system activity: And here is the benchmark of backup drive: Furthermore, there are some files which I just can't touch because I get CRC errors and the hard drive activity spikes to 100% with operating speeds less than 1 MB/s while working with such files. I haven't yet tried swapping SATA cable as I have read this might cause the problems. Anyway, I would like to run some tests on specific clustsers where those files I am interested in are stored. I don't want to do the full chkdsk because it takes a very long time. I would like to either find the utility which executes the disk check directly on the clusters where the file belongs or a couple utilities where one tells me the cluster locations and another can check just those locations. • rsync doesn't use delta transfer on first run

  I'm trying to synchronize a large local directory (with a batch file using rsync 3.0.7 on Cygwin, Windows 7 x64, 30k files, 200gb size) to a remote server (Debian x64 with kernel 2.6, rsyncd 3.0.7) over a slow internet connection (90kbyte/s upload). I know almost all files are identical and I verified that using md5sum locally and remotely. However when executing rsync from my local machine every file gets transferred completely for the first time. When I terminate the batch file after a few transfers and run it again then the already transferred files are skipped. But as soon as it gets to a file not yet transferred it uploads the file as a whole again instead of noticing that the checksum is the same locally and remotely. • Error when I am trying to run Activiti BPM explorer

  I am facing the following problem : I have downloaded Activiti BPM which runs under Apache. I have installed both; Java jre7 & Java jdk1.7.0_06. I set the JAVA_HOME to be C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.7.0_06. But when I try to run the Activiti BPM by typing the following in windows 7 command line : C:\activiti-5.10\activiti-5.10\setup>ant demo.start, the Tomcat server will start and the demo will build successfully, but if I try to navigate to the following link http://localhost:8080/activiti-explorer I get the following error : HTTP Status 404 - /activiti-explorer type Status report message /activiti-explorer description The requested resource (/activiti-explorer) is not available.   Dear Sirs, I'm trying to run a java process via Powershell in Windows XP. Here's the command: java.exe -cp .;./common.jar -Dcontext=atest1 -Dresourcepath=. DW_Install So, the classpath is . and .\common.jar (I think java takes the wrong slashes, right?) There are two environment variables, one "atest1" the other "." and the class to execute main on is DW_Install (in the default package). This command works in cmd.exe, but doesn't is PS. What's going on? What is PS doing while parsing this command that CMD doesn't do (or vice versa)? Aaron

• No longer able to run photo software on XP

  I have Olympus Master 2 and Photoimpression 6 on my system which is running with XP Pro. Both programmes ran fine till recently and neither now works. I have run Avira and AVG anti virus (only one loaded at a time), Superantispyware, Spybot and Malwarebytes and removed the usual dross but no help. I have also uninstalled and reinstalled both several times but again no help. Both programmes load but the Olympus one immediately passes to the usual 'its met a problem and needs to close'...Photoimpression loads fully but as soon as I go to the edit screen it gives the same message. I have tried another profile to no avail. Any idea why this is and what the solution is??

• Let task explorer always run with realtime priority

  I have replaced task manager by process explorer from sysinternals. I would like this to always run at realtime, so that I can easily get it open when my system is really slow. I have noticed that it can take a while to start this program at those moments. I have gone over the different options mentioned on SU. I can't change the shortcut, it immediately opens the .exe. I also can't use the task manager plugins/extensions, as I'm not using task manager. Any idea what I could do? Preferably without installing any other software. That is, if the priority would have any effect on starting the program.
