    Hi, I would like to run apache as a limited user on Windows 2008 R2 for security reasons. I've created a user in the user group (let's call it apache), and set the user to run as in the services pane, but then I am unable to start the service (probably not enough permission to bind to port 80). What is the minimum privileges needed to run apache on windows 2008, or what should I do to allow the user apache to bind apache 2.2 to port 80? Thanks!

Microsoft has recently released Windows Management Framework 3.0 for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 systems, which includes some nice things native to Windows Server 2012 (like PowerShell 3.0) and lots of improvements to WMI, WinRM and other management technologies. Windows Update is advertising it as an optional update. Should I install it on my servers?

I've never used SBS 2008 before today, so this is a real noob question: Is it possible to create a user account without creating an associated exchange mailbox? I've been asked to create a new user, but not give them an email address. I guess I could just disable their email account in Exchange, but is there a nicer method?

    A client has asked me to setup Windows 2008 SBS to block and log websites from a list they will provide. As far as I know they only have standard edition which means I cannot use ISA. I was thinking of using squid authenticated against Active Directory. There is no budge for additional software. Specifically, a black area unexpectedly appears on the left side of the Start menu. Additionally, the Windows Server 2008 logo bar is displayed horizontally instead of vertically. This is what I am doing but it's not working for some reason: Open IIS 7 Create a new virtual directory in Default Web Site and point it to a folder on d:\ drive Browse to folder on d:\ drive and create an .htm file with some test text in it Open a browser and navigate to http://localhost/TestSite/index.htm But I get a 404 - what gives?   • Newbie one: Virtual Networks - Hyper-V - Remote Destktop - Only one phisical NIC

    Hello everyone, I'll try to explain my situation and I'll apreciate any help: I have a phisical server (quad core, 4Gb ram, 1TB raid 10, etc) with Win Server 2008 R2 enterprise, running IIS, Printing, etc... Also, I want to set up 2 virtual Servers with 2008 R2 standart one with SQL Server and the other with Team Foundation. What i need is: Being able to access from inside the private phisical network, to Remote Desktops on each of the Virtual and the phisical Servers Had Access from the outside, using a router and port Forwarding, to the TFS server and the IIS server (one is virtualized, the other is phisical) This is it, but note that I only have one Phisical Nic. How do I configure this to work. When i set up the hyper-v role, on the wizard something like it showed up but I don't remmember what i choose, and right now, I cannot access none of the servers from remote desktop, not even from the phisical private network. Can anybody point me, what can i do? Thanks in advance (sorry 4 my english, i'm a spanish talker and my english isn't that good)

    I would appreciate some help debugging my windows 2008 profile service. Any domain account that logs on to my 2008 machine gets a +- 20 second waiting time on "user profile service" I am using roaming profiles, they are around 8mb in size, and most folders are already redirected to a network share. event log registers no errors, there is more than 1 network card installed, but I have the correct card listed as "primary" Is there any way to increase verbosity of logging on specifically the "user profile service" ?   • Best way to duplicate databases nightly?

    Hey all We just got two new servers, that are running Windows Server 2008. The intent is to make the machines pretty much identical, copying the content of the master to the slave on a nightly basis, so that if anything fails, the second copy can stand in immediately. It doesn't need to be up-to-the-minute mirroring, though I suppose that wouldn't hurt if performance is not affected. The two machines will, amongst other things, each be running an instance of SQL Server 2008. The aim is to duplicate the databases on the master down to the slave on a nightly basis. Unless I'm misunderstanding, the slave databases in mirrored databases require the primary to be present to work correctly; I'm hoping for some solution where we have a second machine that can be up and running with minimal downtime if the first one falls over. Am I misunderstanding mirroring? Is that the best way to do things, or should I use some other mechanism? If so, what?

    Will this increase my Virtual private Server failing rate if i :- install Microsoft Window Server 2008 Enterprise install SQL server enterprise 2008 install IIS 7.5 install ASP.Net Mvc 2 install Microsoft Exchange install Team foundation server on one mini VPS with specification of DELL Poweredge R710 shared plan DDR3 ECC RAMs 16GB and -- 1GB for this VPS using DELL PERC 6i raid controller (this thing alone about 1.5k-2k) and the SAS HDD (15K RPM) (146GB) -- 33GB to this VPS each hdd is freaking fast over 300MB read / write possible with proper tuning the motherboard is a DELL and it has twin redundant PSU (870watt 85%eff) its running on Intel Xeon 5502 (Quad Core) x2 so about 8 physical proc (fairly share) is there any ruler for this about one VPS can only install what what what service ?     I'm a bit new to Technet and just trying to work my way round things. Firstly I want to install Windows Server 2008 R2 as I believe this is the latest edition - however when I look to download it from Technet, it will only allow me to download the Windows Automated Installation Kit. Does this have Windows Server 2008 R2 embedded in WAIK or is there some other extra step to do? Or am I just doing this all wrong :)

    Im using a Intel X25-M 80G with the latest firmware. on XP /w using IDE and WIN7 using AHCI I get read speeds up to 250MB/S. But when running it with Server 2008 SP1 or SP2 on AHCI, I get read speeds around 180MB/S. Ive updated drivers for 2008, tested with writecache on/off. Any input would be appreciated. thanks!

From my understanding, we need to add the following into the web.config file <system.web> <identity impersonate="true" /> </system.web> Also, we need to ensure that the server Jack11 can ping to the domain Watson.org. What other setting do we need to setup in order for a user of domain Watson.org (e.g. the user Watson\User1 to access the application in the Server IIS? This is because currently, there is a problem as follows: Exception Details: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'WATSON\User1'. The error message was displayed when the user User1 wish to access one of the web application in server Jack11 IIS and that web application also do some retrieval of records from the database, which is installed in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise located in the same server Jack11.
