  • What facets have I missed for creating a 3 person guerilla dev team?

    - by Penguinix
Sorry for the Windows developers out there, this solution is for Macs only. This set of applications accounts for: Usability Testing, Screen Capture (Video and Still), Version Control, Task Lists, Bug Tracking, a Developer IDE, a Web Server, A Blog, Shared Doc Editing on the Web, Team and individual Chat, Email, Databases and Continuous Integration. This does assume your team members provide their own machines, and one person has a spare old computer to be the Source Repository and Web Server. All for under $200 bucks. Usability Silverback Licenses = 3 x $49.95 "Spontaneous, unobtrusive usability testing software for designers and developers." Source Control Server and Clients (multiple options) Subversion = Free Subversion is an open source version control system. Versions (Currently in Beta) = Free Versions provides a pleasant work with Subversion on your Mac. Diffly = Free "Diffly is a tool for exploring Subversion working copies. It shows all files with changes and, clicking on a file, shows a highlighted view of the changes for that file. When you are ready to commit Diffly makes it easy to select the files you want to check-in and assemble a useful commit message." Bug/Feature/Defect Tracking (multiple options) Bugzilla = Free Bugzilla is a "Defect Tracking System" or "Bug-Tracking System". Defect Tracking Systems allow individual or groups of developers to keep track of outstanding bugs in their product effectively. Most commercial defect-tracking software vendors charge enormous licensing fees. Trac = Free Trac is an enhanced wiki and issue tracking system for software development projects. Database Server & Clients MySQL = Free CocoaMySQL = Free Web Server Apache = Free Development and Build Tools XCode = Free CruiseControl = Free CruiseControl is a framework for a continuous build process. It includes, but is not limited to, plugins for email notification, Ant, and various source control tools. A web interface is provided to view the details of the current and previous builds. Collaboration Tools Writeboard = Free Ta-da List = Free Campfire Chat for 4 users = Free WordPress = Free "WordPress is a state-of-the-art publishing platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards, and usability. WordPress is both free and priceless at the same time." Gmail = Free "Gmail is a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that email can be more intuitive, efficient, and useful." Screen Capture (Video / Still) Jing = Free "The concept of Jing is the always-ready program that instantly captures and shares images and video…from your computer to anywhere." Lots of great responses: TeamCity [Yo|||] Skype [Eric DeLabar] FogBugz [chakrit] IChatAV and Screen Sharing (built-in to OS) [amrox] Google Docs [amrox]

  • Which programming language suits web critical application development?

    - by jcyang
According to this page,it seems that Perl,PHP,Python is 50 times slower than C/C++/Java. Thus,I think Perl,PHP,Python could not handle critical application(such as 100 million user,xx million request every second) well. But exceptions are exist,e.g. facebook(it is said facebook is written with PHP entirely),wikipeida. Moreover,I heard google use Python extensively. So why?Is it the faster hardware fill the big speed gap between C/C++/Java and Perl/PHP/Python? thanks.

  • How is your mac setup for windows development?

    - by Matt Brailsford
Hi Guys, I'm looking at buying a MacBook Pro to replace my tiring laptop. My day to day job is as a .NET web developer so I am looking to use VMWare Fusion to run VS and SQL server etc. As I've not run my dev environment in a VM before, I would like to know how others are setup. What apps to you have installed? In which environment? Where do you store your files? Within each environment, or some shared drive? Are there any gotchas? Or essentials I should know. Many thanks Matt

  • How do I move from being a software developer to being a software architect?

    - by Nestor
I mean... Should I start programming less and designing more? Should I stop reading programming books, and start reading more books about pattern designs, etc? Should I stop focusing primarily on Microsoft technologies and open up my horizons with other technologies (in order to get a broader perspective)? How should I change my mind set in general (perhaps less detail oriented) ? etc I'm looking for concrete advice, especially from your own experience!

  • Searching for known Team Development helper tools

    - by John
Hello, My team is small, only two programmers. We both share one source ,but we live in different places. The problem is that Meanwhile I make changes on our project, the other team worker makes changes as well. It's very hard to write down every change,at least for us. When we decide we've made an important change,we contact each other sending the whole project's source. This is not good, because: The files sent from one do not contain the changes that the other worker has been working on meanwhile. We host the source on free servers, thus makes it possible for other to see the files. It will be VERY much better if only few(those that are changed) files are being uploaded rather than the whole project. My question: Are there any tools that could make our lives easier? Thanks in advance! EDIT: We use Delphi 2009.

  • PHP programmer wanting to learn Flash game development

    - by grokker
Hi! I'm currently a PHP programmer and one of my childhood dreams is to create a game. A game to show my friends or my children when the time comes :) The problem is I don't know Flash. I'm not great at drawing stuff or even artistic. I could program a little with Javascript and I could consider myself intermediate with jQuery. So my question is, how do I get started? What books do I read first? What's the steps that I should take on this journey? Thank you SO friends. I hope you all could help me create something I could be proud of :) P.S. I'm just assuming that Flash is the easiest way to create and show to other people my game. Anyway I'm very open for other suggestions! My game in mind is a side scroller about an indiana jones type of character and the setting is on the jungle with trees and snakes and a lot of animals!

  • Software Architecture: Unit of Work design pattern discussion

    - by santiagobasulto
Hey everybody. According Martin Fowler's Unit of Work description: "Maintains a list of objects that are affected by a business transaction and coordinates the writing out of changes and resolution of concurrency problems." Avoiding very small calls to the database, which ends up being very slow I'm wondering. If we just delimit it to database transaction management, won't prepare statements help with this?

  • Help me choose a web development framework/platform that will make me learn something

    - by Sergio Tapia
I'm having a bit of an overload of information these past two days. I'm planning to start my own website that will allow local businesses to list their items on sale, and then users can come in and search for "Abercrombie t-shirt" and the stores that sell them will be listed. It's a neat little project I'm really excited for and I'm sure it'll take off, but I'm having problems from the get go. Sure I could use ASP.Net for it, I'm a bit familiar with it and the IDE for ASP.Net pages is bar-none, but I feel this is a great chance for me to learn something new to branch out a bit and not regurgitate .NET like a robot. I've been looking and asking around but it's all just noise and I can't make an educated decision. Can you help me choose a framework/platform that will make me learn something that's a nice thing to know in the job market, but also nice for me to grow as a professional? So far I've looked at: Ruby on Rails Kohana CakePHP CodeIgniter Symfony But they are all very esoteric to me, and I have trouble even finding out which IDE to use to that will let me use auto-complete for the proprietary keywords/methods. Thank you for your time.

  • Recommendations to handle development and deployment of php web apps using shared project code

    - by Exception e
I am wondering what the best way (for a lone developer) is to develop a project that depends on code of other projects deploy the resulting project to the server I am planning to put my code in svn, and have shared code as a separate project. There are problems with svn:externals which I cannot fully estimate. I've read subversion:externals considered to be an anti-pattern, and How do you organize your version control repository, but there is one special thing with php-projects (and other interpreted source code): there is no final executable resulting from your libraries. External dependencies are thus always on raw source code. Ideally I really want to be able to develop simultaneously on one project and the projects it dependends on. Possible way: Check out a projects' dependency in a sub folder as a working copy of the trunk. Problems I foresee: When you want to deploy a project, you might want to freeze its dependencies, right? The dependency code should not end up as a duplicate in the projects repository, I think. *(update1: I additionally assume svn:ignore will pose problems if I cannot fall back on symlinks, see my comment) I am still looking for suggestions that do not require the use junction points. They are a sort of unsupported hack in winxp, which may break some programs* This leads me to the last part of the question (as one has influence on the other): how do you deploy apps whith such dependencies? I've looked into BuildOut for Python, but it seems to be tightly related to the python ecosystem (resolving and fetching python modules from the web etc). I am very eager to learn about your best practices.

  • Modern Web Development + General question

    - by ritu
I have been given a nasty wake up a while ago when I discovered that my 10 years of experience was really equivalent of about 4 (got trapped in a big company doing the same thing over and over without realizing it) and is now paying a huge price. Question 1: I did servlets/JSP programming back in the day (2001-2003). Since then there have been libraries like GWT, YUI, etc. Is JSP still the preferred way of building web apps using Java? Question 2: Because I enjoyed what I was doing and needed to pay the bills, I didn't realize that the ground below me has shifted. How do avoid this in the future? My years of C system programming doesn't seem to matter a lot now to the young guys who talk about design patterns.

  • Best .NET Development Conference

    - by mcass20
My employer has offered to send me to any conference I choose this year. I guess I just missed MIX. I went to VSLive last year and enjoyed it quite a bit. I've never been to PDC or TechEd so that's what I'm leaning toward. Am I missing any others?

  • iPhone or Android for development?

    - by user974873
I have programming experience and would like to start developing for mobile platforms. Now I see that iPhone and Android are both dominating he smartphone market, but also that more and more people are buying iPhones. Which one would be better to start developing for? I currently do not own a Mac but would purchase a Mac Mini if I was to buy an iPhone. Would it be better to buy iPhone and Mac because it will be better in the long run because of the amount of users or Android?

  • Aldon and .Net Development

    - by David Stratton
I'm looking for feedback from .Net developers who have experience with Aldon as a lifecycle management platform. We're seriously considering using Aldon for lifecycle management including source control, automated builds, etc. I know there are a lot of other options out there, but ours is primary an AS/400 shop (with AS/400 programmers outnumbering .Net developers 6 to 1), and Aldon is used already by our iSeries team. The benefit we're looking for is having one lifecycle management suite. Basically, I'm looking for opinions from people who have used Aldon and another set of tools (perhaps TFS, or a combination of SVN, Cruise Control, etc). If you've worked with both, do you have a recommendation on whether this is a good idea, or a bad idea? It's obviously a big choice, so any feedback would be helpful.

  • Web development - relative URLs without duplicating files

    - by eshriek
I have a site with index.php in the root folder, images in /img , and overview.php in /content . I have a sidebar.php file that is included in both index.php and overview.php . How should I refer to /img/image.gif if I include a link in each file? The location of image.gif changes relative to the location of the file that references it. Using /img/image.gif in sidebar.php will work in index.php, but it fails for the file located at /content/overview.php. The only solution that I can see is to either include a seperate sidebar.php in each subdirectory, or include an /img directory in every sub-directory. The best suggestion that I can find is to use the <base html tag as suggested here: Change relative link paths for included content in PHP However, in the same link, SamGoody suggests that the <base tag "is no longer properly supported in Internet Explorer, since version 7." I'd like some insight on the matter before committing to a course of action. Thanks. EDIT: I am using the wrong approach below with "../" Example- root/index.php: ... <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css" /> <title>title</title> </head> <body> <?php include('include/header.php'); ?> <?php include('include/menu.php'); ?> ... root/include/header.php: ... <div id="header"> <span class="fl"><img src="img/dun1.png"/></span><span class="fr"><img src="img/dun2.png"/></span> ... root/content/overview.php: ... <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="../style.css" media="screen" /> <title>Overview</title> </head> <body> <?php include('../include/header.php'); ?> <?php include('../include/menu.php'); ?> ...

  • What is the Software Development Lifecycle?

    - by j-t-s
Our investor wants a SDLC. I've never written one before, and I don't have enough time to go and buy a book, or spend much time learning about them. From what I've been told about them, they consist of requirements (what needs to be done), and a list is done. Is this correct? Update: I have found this article which really helps to explain things in simple terms and very quickly. Not that I think an SDLC should be done quickly. In my case, I have no other option.

  • Remote Development Workflow with Tomcat and Eclipse

    - by Smithers
Currently, I have tomcat installed on the production server to serve my java webapps. I develop in eclipse at my personal workstation and then I use an ant script to build the project into a war file and deploy that on the server. This setup works well when I am on the same network as the server because deploying is almost instantaneous. However, now that I am working remotely uploading the war file to the server is slow and in most cases very redundant (there are about .5 GB of static media included in the war file). Is there a better way to update my webapp on tomcat from eclipse and if so what are the best options for implementing such a solution with minimal effort?
