  • installing Ubuntu 32 bit and Lubuntu 64 bit with the same home directories

    - by rakesh
Mine is a 64 bit machine and I had installed "32" bit Ubuntu to try it out and hence installed many apps and developed many things and configured it for many things. Now it seems that my laptop needs more resources as my development needs so much. My question is :to free up install Lubuntu "64" bit in other partition which uses the same home directory and apps and my development rendering my laptop to be faster than before. Is this possible ? Thanks in Advance.

  • How do I force folder view sort order to not ignore special characters?

    - by Jason Hartley
I have many folders in my home directory that have names that begin with special characters such as _OLD_500GB_HD or !FolderIWantToSeeAtTheTop, but for some reason these folders are sorted according to their first alphanumeric character rather than the leading special character. So how can I force the folder to not ignore the special character, or how else can I make the sort view organize certain folders at the top or bottom of the sort? Thanks.

  • I have a global .gitignore but files aren't being ignored, why?

    - by Michael Durrant
I have a .gitignore_global in my home directory durrantm.../durrantm$ pwd /home/durrantm durrantm.../durrantm$ ls .git* .gitconfig .gitignore_global The .gitignore_global has: durrantm.../durrantm$ head .gitignore_global # RubyMine # .idea/ # Compiled source # ################### *.dll *.exe # Logs and databases # ###################### but when I git status for a project I still end up getting the .idea files when I start using rubyMine. So my git status still shows this: # modified: .idea/dataSources.xml # modified: .idea/linker.iml # modified: .idea/misc.xml # modified: .idea/workspace.xml I have run git config --global core.excludesfile ~/.gitignore_global bvut it didn't help.

  • My home folder disappeared after using Chroot/debootstrap. Can it be recovered?

    - by Martin
I was following the instructions from http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit but stopped after cloning wine. Afterwards I closed the terminal and terminated the process when asked. Ubuntu threw up an error report and when I tried to cd to ~/Downloads it was gone, along with all the other directories. So I tried restarting Ubuntu, whereupon I was greeted with the default desktop and home directory. Can I recover my home folder or has it been deleted?

  • on SSH login, get message 'Could not chdir to home directory"

    - by joachim
I am SSHing into a Mac OS X server running Tiger. When I log in I get put in the root directory and shown this message: Could not chdir to home directory : No such file or directory My $HOME variable seems to be empty. I've googled the problem and found a mailing list thread which suggests using dscl to set up the home directory, but I've done that and the problem still persists even though now dscl correctly reports: $ dscl . -read /users/me NFSHomeDirectory NFSHomeDirectory: /Users/me

  • Specifying an additional Applications directory on Mac OS X

    - by 341008
Is there any way I can specify an additional Applications directory. I basically want to keep the applications that come with Mac OS X in the default Applications directory, but, install all third-party software to a different directory which is in a separate partition. I want to retain all advantages of the actual Applications directory such as the one where copying files from a .dmg to the Applications folder installs software.

  • Sync local directory with remote FTPS?

    - by A T
How do I keep my local directory in sync with my remote FTPS directory? Note that I've tried WinSCP, but found that it only works a few times then I need to restart it to get it going again. Also I've tried all the utilities mentioned here but only a few supported the connection requirements (explicit SSL over FTP), and those that did didn't have "realtime" directory sync. Also note that a curl, rsync or wput command which I can put into "scheduled tasks" will suffice, if it can do directory sync.

  • What's the correct SELinux type for a directory?

    - by unthar
If I create a new filesystem/directory off of / and I set the Linux permissions to 770 I expect the group to be able to read and write files in that directory. SELinux was preventing me from doing this until I changed the SELinux type on that directory to public_content_rw_t. If this is just a directory in which users in that group will share files is this an acceptable SELinux type or should I be using another one? Writing a custom policy seems like overkill for these purposes. Thanks

  • PowerBroker (Likewise-Open) + Ubuntu 13.04 -> 13.10 Upgrade

    - by JoBu1324
I just upgraded Ubuntu from 13.04 to 13.10, and now I can't log into Active Directory; my system is integrated using PowerBroker Identity Services (PBIS), which used to be called Likewise-Open. So far I have identified the following symptoms: I am able to log in with my credentials via ssh. The screen goes black when attempting log into my account via the login screen. I've tried leaving the domain, purging PBIS, and re-installing the latest version of PBIS. I've been trying the troubleshooting section I found here, but I haven't had any success. • How to access the relative directory of a ASP.NET website?

    - by Michael Schilling
I need to access a folder that will contain various text files for my web site. I'm using Visual Web Developer 2010 Express. I made a web site using visual basic. Here is the failing code: Dim fileName As String fileName = CurDir.ToString + fileName.Text + ".txt" FileOpen(1, fileName, OpenMode.Output) FileClose(1) CurDir.ToString is giving me strange directory path that isn't anywhere near where my website files are located. I need to be able to access the files in a folder inside of the WebSite1 folder without using C:\Users\..., but I'm at a loss on how to do that. Can anyone help me out?

  • Can a user be a member of multiple Organization Units (OU) in Active Directory ?

    - by Stormshadow
Can a user be a member of multiple Organization Units (OU) in Active Directory ? Also, is there a standard format mentioned by Microsoft on how an OU should be created and what its attributes are ? I found this in Wikipedia "However, Organizational Units are just an abstraction for the administrator, and do not function as true containers; the underlying domain operates as if objects were all created in a simple flat-file structure, without any OUs. It is not possible for example to create two user accounts with an identical username in two separate OUs, such as "fred.staff-ou.domain" and "fred.student-ou.domain"."

  • Best directory to store application data with read\write rights for all users?

    - by Wodzu
Hi guys. Until Windows Vista I was saving my application data into the directory where the program was located. The most common place was "C:\Program Files\MyApplication". As we know, under Vista and later the common user does't have rights to write under "Program Files" folder. So my first idea was to save the application data under "All Useres\Application Data" folder. But it seams that this folder has writing restrictions too! So to sum up, my requirements are: Folder should exist under Windows XP and above Microsoft's systems. All useres of the system should read\write\creation rights to this folder and it subfolders and files. I want to have only one copy of file\files for all useres. Thanks for your time.

  • .NET Framework 4.0 mysteriously loses track of System.EnterpriseServices

    - by Lorin Thwaits
The GAC in .NET 4.0 is cut into two parts now -- one half for .NET Framework 2.0 stuff, and the other for v4.0 stuff. When compiling any project, targeting .NET 2.0, 3.5, or what have you, this annoying error may pop up: Could not load file or assembly 'System.EnterpriseServices, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. In that case, open a run box and perform this copy command: xcopy %ProgramFiles%\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\.NETFramework\v4.0\System.EnterpriseServices.dll %windir%\Microsoft.NET\assembly\GAC_32\System.EnterpriseServices\v4.0_4.0.0.0__b03f5f7f11d50a3a /e This reconstructs the proper portion of the GAC for that one missing file.

  • Visual Studio confused when there are multiple system.web sections in your web.config

    - by Jeff Widmer
I am trying to start debugging in Visual Studio for the website I am currently working on but Visual Studio is telling me that I have to enable debugging in the web.config to continue: But I clearly have debugging enabled: At first I chose the option to Modify the Web.config file to enable debugging but then I started receiving the following exception on my site: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. Config section 'system.web/compilation' already defined. Sections must only appear once per config file. See the help topic <location> for exceptions   So what is going on here?  I already have debug=”true”, Visual Studio tells me I do not, and then when I give Visual Studio permission to fix the problem, I get a configuration error. Eventually I tracked it down to having two <system.web> sections. I had defined customErrors higher in the web.config: And then had a second system.web section with compilation debug=”true” further down in the web.config.  This is valid in the web.config and my site was not complaining but I guess Visual Studio does not know how to handle it and sees the first system.web, does not see the debug=”true” and thinks your site is not set up for debugging. To fix this so that Visual Studio was not going to complain, I removed the duplicate system.web declaration and moved the customErrors statement down.

  • Poor System performance on my machine running Ubuntu 12.04(Beta 2 updated to the present moment)

    - by Mohammad Kamil Nadeem
Why is it that my system dies when multitasking(it is happening from 11.10) on Ubuntu11.10(Unity), Kubuntu 11.10(KDE) and Deepin Linux which is based on 11.10(Gnome-Shell) The thing is that I thought with 12.04 I would get performance like I used to get on 11.04 on which everything used to run fine without any lag or hiccups. The same lagging(Browser starts to stutter, increased delay in the launching of dash and applications)is happening on 12.04 http://i.imgur.com/YChKB.png and http://i.imgur.com/uyXLA.png . I believe that my system configuration is sufficient for running Ubuntu as you can check here http://paste.ubuntu.com/929734/ . I had the Google voice and chat plugin installed on 12.04 so someone suggested that I should remove that and see if the performance improves but no such respite(I am having this on multiple operating system based on Ubuntu 11.10 as I have mentioned above). On a friends suggestion Ran Memory Test through Partition Magic and my system passed that fine. One thing more that I would like to know is that why when I have 2Gb Ram and 2.1GB swap does my system starts lag and run poorly when Ram consumption goes 500+. If you require anymore information I will gladly provide it.

  • Do NOT remove the reference to System.Core from your VS2010 Project

    - by Lee Brandt
One of the things I routinely do when adding a new class library project, is remove all references and just add them back in as I need them. That is NOT a good idea for Visual Studio 2010. When I DID need System.Core, and went to add it back, this is what I got: "A reference to 'System.Core' could not be added. This component is automatically referenced..." After some Googling I found this article: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/525663/cannot-remove-system-core-dll-reference-from-a-vs2010-project It tells you to add it back manually. Here is the part that needs back in the project file. After the last PropertyGroup node, add this node:   <ItemGroup>     <Reference Include="System.Core" />   </ItemGroup> You should be good to go again. Hope this helps.

  • Digital Asset Management System

    - by Prashant
I am looking for an opensource web-based digital asset management system. My requirements are to create a web based system where users can upload and download .zip, .jpg, .png, .pdf, .doc, .xls etc. media files. Also user management should be there, so that we can create multiple users and accordingly give them permissions. I have found one http://www.resourcespace.org/ but it looks a bit big and complicated. It is fitting to my need but I am looking and researching a bit more to get some good and more easy to use system. If anyone knows such web based system or tool, please share.

  • SQL SERVER – NTFS File System Performance for SQL Server

    - by pinaldave
Note: Before practicing any of the suggestion of this article, consult your IT Infrastructural Admin, applying the suggestion without proper testing can only damage your system. Question: “Pinal, we have 80 GB of data including all the database files, we have our data in NTFS file system. We have proper backups are set up. Any suggestion for our NTFS file system performance improvement. Our SQL Server box is running only SQL Server and nothing else. Please advise.” When I receive questions which I have just listed above, it often sends me deep thought. Honestly, I know a lot but there are plenty of things, I believe can be built with community knowledge base. Today I need you to help me to complete this list. I will start the list and you help me complete it. NTFS File System Performance Best Practices for SQL Server Disable Indexing on disk volumes Disable generation of 8.3 names (command: FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLE8DOT3 1) Disable last file access time tracking (command: FSUTIL BEHAVIOR SET DISABLELASTACCESS 1) Keep some space empty (let us say 15% for reference) on drive is possible (Only on Filestream Data storage volume) Defragement the volume Add your suggestions here… The one which I often get a pretty big debate is NTFS allocation size. I have seen that on the disk volume which stores filestream data, when increased allocation to 64K from 4K, it reduces the fragmentation. Again, I suggest you attempt this after proper testing on your server. Every system is different and the file stored is different. Here is when I would like to request you to share your experience with related to NTFS allocation size. If you do not agree with any of the above suggestions, leave a comment with reference and I will modify it. Please note that above list prepared assuming the SQL Server application is only running on the computer system. The next question does all these still relevant for SSD – I personally have no experience with SSD with large database so I will refrain from comment. • IIS Not Accepting Active Directory Login Credentials

    - by Dale Jay
I have an ASP.NET web form using Microsoft's boilerplate Active Directory login page, set up exactly as suggested. Windows Authentication is activated on the "Default Website" and "MyWebsite" levels, and Domain\This.User is given "Allow" access to the site. After entering the valid credentials for This.User on the web form, a popup window appears asking me to enter my credentials yet again. Despite entering valid credentials for This.User (after attempting Domain\This.User and This.User formats), it rejects the credentials and returns an unauthorized security headers page (error 401.2). Active Directory user This.User is valid, the IP address of the AD server has been verified and SPN's have been set up for the server. Error Code: 0x80070005 Default Web Site security config: <system.web> <identity impersonate="true" /> <authentication mode="Windows" /> <customErrors mode="Off" /> <compilation debug="true" /> </system.web> Sub web site security <authentication mode="Windows"> <forms loginUrl="~/logon.aspx" timeout="2880" /> </authentication> <authorization> <deny users="?" /> <allow users="*" /> </authorization>
