  • Driverless printer sharing on Windows.

    I have a printer hooked up to a computer running Windows XP. It prints fine from that computer, but I'd like to set up other computers (running Vista and 7) to print from it as well. I tried setting up printer sharing, but it wouldn't work because the client computers needed to install the print driver as well. (The driver itself has been discontinued and there's no version for Vista or 7.) Is there some (hopefully free) software I can install to, say, add a virtual printer that sends the data to a host computer to print it, rather then having to directly access the printer over the network via the Windows printer sharing model?

  • How to backup boot information of a PC's Hard Disk?

    I just installed Windows 7 on a partition of my hard disk and I'm planning to install Vista and Windows 8 on other partitions on the same disk, and maybe a few Linux distributions too. Before I install other Operating Systems, I would like to backup the boot information, just to make sure I can get back to Windows 7 in case anything goes wrong with the booting data. I already made a backup of the MBR using MBRFix but I'm wondering if I should save some Boot Sector from the Windows 7 partition? I noticed that Windows Vista install DVD has a "bootrec.exe" utility in the recovery console (Shift+F10) and it has some options to rewrite the boot sector of the partitions. Therefore I wonder if there is any utility (preferably on Hiren's BootCD) to backup/write the boot sector I would also like to know how to backup the boot data of a Linux installation

  • Two network cards in one Windows 7 PC

    Hi, I've upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. On Vista I used to run one network card (Intel 82566DC -2 Gigabit) for my internet which was connected to a Dovado USB mobile broadband router connected to a 3G modem. The IP setup on the card is set on DHCP. The second card (3com Ethernet link) was used to connect to our town's local WUG (wireless user group) and all worked fine. Now the problem I have with Windows 7 is that when I connect to the internet with the (Intel) first card, the internet work fine but as soon as I connect the second card to the wug my internet drops. If I then disconnect the first card (internet one) and try to connect to the wug it works. It seems that the two cards are fighting each other. Is there maybe something I can do to fix the problem? As you probably can gather from this post is that I am not an expert on PC's so please if you do answer do I in simple terms. :) Thanks, Martin

    My system config is AMD phenom-II x2 550 processor, 2x2gb(800fsb)ddr2 zion ram, gigabyte ga-m61pme-s2 motherboard, 160gb sata hdd. Now I am planning to install Windows XP sp3 (32-bit) and Windows 7 (64bit). My first questions are: Is my system enough for the above mentioned two OSes? Which OS one should be installed first on local disk c: drive? I have both XP and vista drivers on separate disks as provided with my motherboard but don't have drivers for win-7, so can I use my vista driver for win-7?

    In my multi boot set up, booting to vista and 7 goes fine, but when I try to boot to XP, i get an error Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. Choose your language settings, and then click "Next." 3. Click "Repair your computer." If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. File: \NTLDR Status: 0xc000000e Info: The selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or corrupt. See below. Clearly the resumeobject seems to be missing in the XP entry ("Real Mode Boot sector"), only I don't know how to restore it. Vista is on **C:**, Win7 is on **F:** (as is the bootmgr ??? ) and WinXP is on **E:** What I've tried: [1] I've used about 5 windows discs, that is the Recovery Consoles from real XP install CD's and 3 virtual Recovery Consoles. All failed. The real CD's work ONE time, but won't let me finish, I only got as far as [b]fixboot E:[/b] Then they shut the laptop down, I kid you not. On a next startup, all 5 CD's ask me for some Admin password that I've never added! [2] I have VisualBCD and EasyBCD, but the most obvious things I tried there didn't solve the problem. So know I don't exactly know what to do with them.   • Seamless Remote Windows on Linux Client

    I really like the RemoteApp features of Windows Server 2008 Are there any solutions for similar functionality for Linux clients and a Windows server? We have users that are running Linux on the desktop and rdesktop to a Windows server, mostly for Outlook. It would be nice if Outlook could behave more seamlessly. From what I can tell rdesktop doesn't do that yet, it only implements RDP 5. I've also seen "SeamlessRDP" from Cendio, which is an extension to rdesktop, but I can't get it to work. I think it doesn't work in Vista, but that is just a guess. Any ideas? And thanks in advance. EDIT: I emailed Cendio and they confirmed SeamlessRDP doesn't work with Server 2008 for unknown reasons. It appears there is no way to do this with a 2k8 server. It's either windows clients with RemoteApp or using a pre-Vista OS with seamlessrdp

    I have enabled following policies, "Prohibit TCP/IP advanced connection" "Prohibit access to properties of components of a LAN connection" "Enable Windows 2000 Network Connections setings for Administrators" after doing all these, all machines running windows xp, 2000 and vista have network settings properties button disabled as expected. However all machines running windows 7 have no effect, I believe there are few more steps, all Windows 7 machines are on domain and we want to control this via Domain Controler's GPO. Please let me know, what I need to do to have Windows 7 disable the properties of network connection, I am not network expert, I read few articles about what new has been added in GPO of windows 7 but I am blank. Everything works fine on Windows XP, Vista, 2003 Server. Only Windows 7 is a problem.

    New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!!   • GIMP Slow Startup

    Is there any way to speed up GIMP's startup time on Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit 1.6 [Dual] Intel Processors? On XP [different computer], it loads in less than 3 seconds. On Vista, it takes 20 seconds: 2 Seconds (other - fonts, brushes, etc) 18 Seconds (extension-script-fu) It just freezes at extension-script-fu. Looking at ProcessExplorer (or Task Manager, whatever), I see that it's not taking any CPU. EDIT: it does seem to be taking 50% of the CPU. It gets stuck for about 18 seconds, then starts working again, and the actual GIMP program pops up [...finally]. I have the latest stable version running (I think). I tried it with XP SP2 Compatibiliy mode and/or Run As Administrator, but that didn't help. EDIT: One way would be to disable script-fu. Does anyone know how to disable it at startup? (NOTE: Just wanted to point out that the title and the tags are the same. :D )

  • Acer Aspire 3680 Wireless Signal Problem

    I am using Acer Aspire 3680. I recently reinstalled Windows Vista, and the wireless did not work by default. I installed the "Atheros Wireless LAN Driver" on this site: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_3680.html The result, the wireless APs are successfully scanned. However, when I tried to join a network, even with 5/5 signal, an error message showed up diagnosing signal too little. I restarted as Ubuntu, and wireless worked perfectly, with same computer position. Even more confusing, When I moved to the kitchen (2 meters close to the router), the wireless connected, when I move back to my room, wireless failed on Vista and worked on Ubuntu. It is clearly the driver problem. Acer laptops seems come with pre-installed drivers, but after re-installation, they are all gone. (I can't find the original Acer backup disc) Please do not answer "move closer to the AP" and something related to "interference", as wireless worked with Ubuntu's default driver.

    Possible Duplicate: How do I disable administrator prompt in Windows 8? When I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro 64-bit to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit, I noticed some permissions issues extremely problematic to my using the OS. When running Windows 7 or Vista with UAC off, I was able to navigate around the filesystem as if I was on Windows XP and prior such that I didn't have to run as administrator and could copy and edit files wherever I wanted. In Windows 8, turning off UAC no longer does this. Does anyone know how to get Windows 8's permissions to act like Windows 7 and Vista when UAC is disabled? NOTE: I did a clean install on my laptop with Windows 8, and it has the same issues.

    XPS, the PDF alternative, seems to be almost dead in the water. That said, Windows 7 offers a built-in XPS printer and viewer. I believe Vista also offers a built-in printer. XPS seems lighter than PDF, perhaps it only appears so because of Adobe's bloated reader, but that's for another discussion. Is it worth it to begin encoding in XPS instead of PDF? Will Vista or above be able to read it without problems? What should I look out for?

    In windows 7 it is pretty simple to boot directly to a VHD, given that it also contains (or you are going to install) Windows 7 (or Vista/Server 2008). This installation is made possible I believe by the fact that from Vista on, Microsoft is using WIM (Windows Imaging Format) for OS installation. Is there a way to install XP to a VHD on Windows 7? Or is there a way to create a WIM image of the XP installer? Some have claimed to be able to do it in different blog posts, but there are no explanations of how to achieve it.

  • .NET Framework 4.0 installation is very slow

    On my Windows Vista, it takes a full 12 minutes to install the .NET Framework 4.0. a) Is this normal? b) If not, can something be done about it? The reason I'm concerned about the speed is because it slows down the testing of our product installer considerably. Testing an installer is time consuming already, but this new .NET Framework installer makes it almost undoable. Detail: I did the test on a clean Vista inside a VirtualBox virtual machine. This setup does not show any performance issues in other situations. I tried both dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe and dotNetFx40_Client_x86_x64.exe. They both take approximately the same time to install.

Sometimes it's as if half the backlighting was turned off, and sometimes it's as if all the backlighting was turned off, all except for the mouse pointer, which remains as bright white as ever. Trying to change the screen's brightness does nothing, but rebooting fixes this. Has anyone else seen this? Any ideas on what's causing it or how to make it stop happening?

  • Jerky animation on window open/close

    Today, I received and installed Windows 7, and one of the first (slightly) annoying things I noticed is a visible jerk when opening of closing new windows. When I minimize or maximize already running window, the animation is smooth from beginning to end, but when I start a new program, it seems that just at the end of the animation Windows thinks for a fraction of a second. It is a bit distracting; especially since Windows 7 seems to be overall more responsive than Windows Vista. Does anybody has the same experience? Could it, for instance, a 64bit version specific issue (just in case)? I upgraded Vidia drivers, and even though my video card is not capable running latest games, it should be able to handle this (since it was OK in Vista, and since it does not look like a video issue).

  • VirtualBox: Host OS processor is spiked while guest OS virtual processor is idle?

    I'm running Windows XP 32-bit on Windows Vista 64-bit with VirtualBox 3.0.6. Whenever I run the XP VM, Vista (host) reports 100% cpu utilization even though XP (guest) reports between 1-5% cpu utilization. The host box has 2 GB of physical RAM. The guest/vm is configured with 512 MB. The host box has a 64-bit AMD processor. No apps (other than VirtualBox) are running on either host, they're just idling. Any guesses as to why the host processor is spiked? I've enabled various advanced features for the XP guest in the hopes of having better performance: Settings → System → Motherboard: Enable IO APIC Settings → System → Processor: Enable PAE/NX Settings → System → Acceleration: Enable VT-x/AMD-V and Enable Nesting Paging

  • Sharing hp Deskjet F380 using cups via http driver issues with xp client

    Hi the problem is xp doesn't have built in drivers for my printer but vista does. On vista it works perfectly without any issues. However when I try using xp, it insists that I select a driver from the selection xp offers by default. The drivers I've downloaded from HP don't support networking. Hp have stated they're non networkable. Is there anything I can do about this? Any help is greatly appreciated and would save me getting ear ache!

    I know this question has been asked before but I've tried all the usual fixes and nothing works. Basically the hard drive had two partitions with Vista and Windows 7. I've deleted the Vista partition to make more room and expanded the Windows 7 partition to fill the drive (using GParted). I've tried: Running Startup Repair - it doesn't find any problems. Setting partition to Active - worked. bootsect /nt60 c: - worked. BootRec /FixMbr - worked. BootRec /FixBoot - worked. BootRec /ScanOs - I get the message "Total identified Windows installations: 0" BootRec /RebuildBcd - I get the message "Total identified Windows installations: 0" BcdEdit shows a Windows Boot Manager and a Windows Boot Loader, both on C: partition. What else can I try?

  • Explorer forgetting how to cut and paste files

    My Windows XP (SP3) machine (at work) occasionally "forgets" how to cut-and-paste files in Explorer - if I cut or copy a file then go to paste it elsewhere, the "paste" and "paste shortcut" menu items are greyed out. The keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+X/Ctrl+C,Ctrl+V) don't work either, and neither does Drag-and-Drop - clicking and dragging a file/folder doesn't change the pointer and letting go doesn't drop the item anywhere. Restarting the explorer.exe process usually fixes the problem, but sometimes I need to do a full reboot. Note: this may be related to the following existing question, although that's Vista and it sounds like the asker has more permanent problems than I do: http://superuser.com/questions/27045/copy-paste-in-vista-explorer-broken-not-ms-vpc So, any idea what might be causing the problem and how to avoid it?

  • Toshiba monitor not displaying anything

    Alright, so I agreed to fix a friends computer, thinking it was a software problem, not hardware. I was going to use an XP disc and valid code to swap her from Vista to XP, as apparently Vista had some driver issues. I found out, however, that the real problem was her heat sink was completely clogged, causing the computer to overheat and shut down. So, I took the computer apart and cleaned the heat sink. However, after putting it all back together, and turning it on, nothing at all shows up. I plugged in an external monitor, and nothing shows up on that either. I have double, triple, decuply checked all the connections and everything appears to be plugged in, attached, and in the right place. I am out of ideas. So, my question is, does anyone have any clue what is going on, and have suggestions I could try?

    Hello, I just recently deactivated system recovery on Vista, which saved me a huge amount of space. But I wonder is it necessary to have it activated? I can't remember that I any time had any use of system recovery anyway. And since it is Microsoft it probably would do a sloppy job anyway or? This question is for Windows XP, Vista, and 7. Do you have it activated? You can leave a comment if you have any opinion about the system recovery
