• Windows hangs on Rename, Delete and Move for specific MKV files

  I have been googling this issue for a long time, and no full solutions seem to be out there. For certain mkv files, windows hangs when moving, copying, or deleting. These files play fine in a player such as GOM player. System: a fast windows 7, 64 bit box. Results: CPU change is negligible Memory usage rockets up to ~100% In cased of delete or move, "discovering files" dialogue box stays up for a long time Rename simply shows spinning icon until it finishes Action is completed after EXTREMELY long amount of time Memory usage does not return to normal "Fixes:" Disable thumbnail creation (helps for some cases) After move/rename/delete kill explorer with taskmanager, and relaunch to re-claim your memory Even with the thumbnails turned off, the issue persists. I have also tried re-muxing a file, which worked fine, but still resulted in a file with the same above issues.

• iTunes sees my iPhone, but Windows 7 x64 doesn't

  After reinstalling Windows 7 (64-bit), it has stopped recognizing my iPhone. I can see it in iTunes but not in Windows Explorer, so I can't get the photos off. I'm having this problem on three different machines and two different iPhones (my wife's and mine). It's maddening. I've had every version of iPhone since it first came out and I've never had this problem before. I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (currently at 10.2.1.1). I've updated iOS on the phone (currently at 4.3).   Is there any way to have Windows 7 hibernate Bob's account when switched to Mary's account and vice versa? I.e.: Bob is logged in Bob clicks Start shutdown switch user Bob's session is saved to disk Mary logs in Mary's session is restored as it was when Bob's turn started Both are heavy users (30+ chrome tabs open, multiple documents, multiple spreadsheets, music playing, etc) I would like to set up the system so that each gets the full use of the computer while still having all their open apps the way they left them.   I cannot find a Windows Explorer alternative that has full-tree view functionality like Path Finder on the Mac This is the type of view I am looking for (screenshot of Path Finder on Mac): By full-tree I mean: A tree view that includes files in addition to folders, and can be operated as its own pane-- not as a shared pane or attached pane which is characteristic of Q-Dir. Q-Dir and most others simply stick a folder tree pane on to a file list pane, which is not as useful (think Ruby on Rails application or anything with MVC-- I want to be able to pop open folders in the tree and have them stay open as I work between them). • Run Windows batch file on schedule as non-Administrator user

  I'm running Windows XP x64 SP2. I have a Windows batch file that with some Robocopy commands that I want to run on schedule. I created a scheduled task for it, running as a dedicated user (not the user I'm logged on as), but it simply did not run. I could see successful logon events in the security log, so it got that far, but the commands in the batch file definitely weren't getting executed. Nothing else seemed to work. The thing is, I want it to run under a low-privileged account. Does anyone know how can I get a batch file to run on schedule as a non-Administrator?

• Windows 2003 GPO Software Restrictions

  We're running a Terminal Server farm in a Windows 2003 Domain, and I found a problem with the Software Restrictions GPO settings that are being applied to our TS servers. Here are the details of our configuration and the problem: All of our servers (Domain Controllers and Terminal Servers) are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and both the domain and forest are at Windows 2003 level. Our TS servers are in an OU where we have specific GPO's linked and have inheritance blocked, so only the TS specific GPO's are applied to these TS servers. Our users are all remote and do not have workstations joined to our domain, so we don't use loopback policy processing. We take a "whitelist" approach to allowing users to run applications, so only applications that we approve and add as path or hash rules are able to run. We have the Security Level in Software Restrictions set to Disallowed and Enforcement is set to "All software files except libraries". What I've found is that if I give a user a shortcut to an application, they're able to launch the application even if it's not in the Additional Rules list of "whitelisted" applications. If I give a user a copy of the main executable for the application and they attempt to launch it, they get the expected "this program has been restricted..." message. It appears that the Software Restrictions are indeed working, except for when the user launches an application using a shortcut as opposed to launching the application from the main executable itself, which seems to contradict the purpose of using Software Restrictions. My questions are: Has anyone else seen this behavior? Can anyone else reproduce this behavior? Am I missing something in my understanding of Software Restrictions? Is it likely that I have something misconfigured in Software Restrictions? EDIT To clarify the problem a little bit: No higher level GPO's are being enforced. Running gpresults shows that in fact, only the TS level GPO's are being applied and I can indeed see my Software Restictions being applied. No path wildcards are in use. I'm testing with an application that is at "C:\Program Files\Application\executable.exe" and the application executable is not in any path or hash rule. If the user launches the main application executable directly from the application's folder, the Software Restrictions are enforced. If I give the user a shortcut that points to the application executable at "C:\Program Files\Application\executable.exe" then they are able to launch the program. EDIT Also, LNK files are listed in the Designated File Types, so they should be treated as executable, which should mean that they are bound by the same Software Restrictions settings and rules.

• Windows 2008 Routing and Remote access server - access to the internet

  I have a windows 2008 r2 remote access server set up and running. The remote access works fine. My problem is that the remote access server itself doesn't have access to the internet. The box has two interfaces, an internal and an external. Inbound connections come in on the external interface and RRAS responds. All wall and nice. I want to be able to use windows update, browse, etc from this box but can't as the outbound traffic just gets blocked. I've tried going into the RRAS mmc tool and opening the interface properties, under which there are two buttons for inbound and outbound filters. There I tried adding ports 80 and 443, but this doesn't work completely. I can see the connection initiating (Syn goes out) but the session never establishes itself. Anyone done this or got any suggestions?

• Can't find synergy config file on Windows

  New to synergy I connected everything just fine. Both my Windows 7 64bit (server) and 7 32 bit (client) are connected perfectly. However, I can't tell synergy which screen is where because I can't find this config file everyone is talking about. I looked in the root folder of the application, there is no ext/synergy.conf so I went and made one but that isn't working either. Kind of frustrating cause I think its the last step. Anyway any help is much appreciated. I have the newest version from the site but it says version unknown in the application. On Windows it has that cool drag and drop UI to place your screens where you want them but nothing is working for my mouse or keyboard.

• Sound entirely stopped working on Windows 8 on a Macbook Pro

  I am currently running Windows 8 (downloaded from DreamSpark) on a Macbook Pro. This worked fine for a while but suddenly all audio stopped working. When I go to "Playback devices" and hit "Test" on the speakers I get treated with the following message: This also shows up right after I try restarting. I tried disallowing exclusive usage of the devices but it makes no difference. Edit: After some looking around I tried changing the sample rate and bit depth so I would get a dialog screen to force Windows to go around the program that's using it. • Can I grant permissions on files in windows 7 using a security identifier from another machine

  I have an external hard drive, and I wish to grant permissions on some files to users from 2 different computers without having to hook it up to the 2 different computers. I know the SID of the user on the other computer, I'd like to know if and how I can grant permissions to files using the SID. I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 bits, and "The Other" computer Win 7 Home Premium 64 bits, they are not in a domain, but separate computers on a home network (not even same homegroup). • Windows 7, weird/annoying explorer problem

  First of all, I'm asking the moderators if you could summarize my problem in the Title and modify it according to that. Thanks in advance and sorry, my english is not that good. The problem. It happened on two of my machines already. Once it happens there are many problems with explorer. I'll try to describe at precisely I just can. So. Basically when you create a new folder, you have to hit the enter key TWICE because first it'll throw an error that "there is no such file..". Okay. Then if you try to delete some, this happens also. Renaming is the same. Here is an example. I tried adding a "2" to the end of the folder name, hit enter and got this. Here I can press cancel, nothing happens. If I press retry, the popup disappears and it'll finally change the folder name. I can't come up with anything for this. Using BitDefender (registered, full protection), Windows 7 x86 Ultimate retail (boxed, english version). The other PC had the same anti-virus protection , but it have a Windows 7 x64. Both systems are activated, updated totally. I don't remember installing any new stuff on the PCs. All the stuff on the PCs are legal, no cracked / any other software present. It just happened, so to say. Already reinstalled the other PC because I thought * I * messed up something and its just something FUBAR. However, I dont want to reinstall my laptop also. Any ideas are welcome. (Today I had a strange bug. Windows Explorer had 1.0+gb memory usage with 100% cpu. Killed it, launched a new explorer.exe and thats all. Nothing changed, but it may worth a try. The other PC did NOT have this problem, ever.) Isn't there a registry fix for this or something? :/

• Get the "source network address" in Event ID 529 audit entries on Windows XP

  In windows server 2003 when an Event 529 (logon failure) occures with a logon type of 10 (remote logon), the source network IP address is recorded in the event log. On a windows XP machine, this (and some other details) are omitted. If a bot is trying a brute force over RDP (some of my XP machines are (and need to be) exposed with a public IP address), i cannot see the originating IP address so i don't know what to block (with a script i run every few minutes). The DC does not log this detail either when the logon attempt is to the client xp machine and the DC is only asked to authenticate the credentials. Any help getting this detail in the log would be appreciated.

  If you open (not save) a Word attachment in Windows Mail, then it will open the document up in Microsoft Word. This is saved somewhere, and you can edit the file and save it (i.e. no "save as" dialog appears). If you then close Word without explicitly saving the file somewhere, how do you then find the edited file? (Assuming that it can be found, and isn't automatically deleted). Windows Search does not find the file (presumably because it's in the folders that are excluded from search).

• How do I share a complete XP disk so it can be seen from a Windows 7 system?

(both computers can see the internet etc so I know the network it’s self is working) I have a normal home network with a Windows XP machine on it and the new Windows 7 (64 bit) machine. So I can transfer the files to the new Windows 7 machine, I wish to share the complete disk (and all files) from the Windows XP machine and access them from the Windows 7 machine. Is there a step by step set of instructions for doing this anywhere? So fare I have: put both computers into the same workgroup put the windows 7 machine into work network mode so it can see the XP machine in the work group shared the XP disk as read only But when I try to access a lot of the folders on the XP disks, I am told I am not allowed to access them. (I was not asked for any passwords by the windows 7 machine when I accessed the XP machine. The XP machine just has its default account with no password set on it)

• Windows 7 stopped connecting to samba share

  I have a problem with Windows 7 Home connecting to samba on linux server. It's worked fine for a year and without any changes in configuration or updates it suddenly stopped working. The strangest thing for me is that it stopped working for no reason that I could think of. After a few minutes after trying to connect I get: \\ip is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Other computers in that network (XP machines) connect to samba without any problem. I've tried adding LmCompatibilityLevel as described here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/75-63-windows-samba-issue , but it didn't help.

• Remap Apple MacBook Eject key in Windows?

  I have a MacBook with Windows 7 on it as my daily driver. My MacBook has a nearly useless Eject key, but I wish it was a forward delete key. KeyRemap4Macboook works great in OS X. Is there any software that is equivalent in Windows? I have tried KeyTweaks and HotKeys and neither of them will recognize the Eject key. I looked it up and I think it is key 161. Is there any way to make the key into a more useful forward delete? Could I just go into the registry and do it that way?

• Customize side panel in Internet Explorer 9/Windows 7

  I use Internet Explorer 9 with all the horizontal toolbars except the tab bar invisible to maximize vertical space. I have plenty of room at the side so I have the Favorites/Feeds/History panel open, usually on Favorites to replace the Favorites bar. I'd like to customize the shortcuts in this panel to display as large icons, similar to when you set the display in Windows Explorer to Large Icons and, long shot... change the backround color. The side panel does appear to be just a Windows Explorer window but it seems immune to any kind of tampering or customization, mainly because right clicking is disabled on the empty space. Changing browsers is not going to happen but can someone help out here?

I've made a restore point why does it give this error? What should I do? • Copy files between two windows machines on seperate domains

  I need to copy several database backups between two computers. The source computer initiates the copy and is a Windows 2000 pc and is a member of domain1. The destination machine is running Windows Server 2000 and is a member of domain2. The machines are on separate networks physically connected via a firewall. The files are currently copied via ssh with http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ installed on the destination machine. There is no need to encrypt the contents during the copy, however the passwords should not be sent in the clear. I am looking for a way to copy the files without having to install a server on the destination. I specifically need help with how to set up the permissions and what ports would need to be opened on the firewall.

  We have a Windows 2003 server DC1 which is our primary DC holding all FSMO roles. It also is a DNS server for our domain domain.local which is an active directory integrated zone. We also have a Windows 2008 DC name DC2 All servers have the correct DNS entries etc. However on all dns servers there are event id 4515 indicating there are duplicate zones in separate directory partitions and only one will be used until the other is removed. And I see these, there is a zone for domain.local under the default naming partition CN=System, CN=MicrosoftDNS, DC=domain.local. As well as the DomainDNSZones partition DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=DOMAIN, DC=local, CN=MicrosoftDNS It seems that the partition in the Default Naming partition is the one which is being used currently. I have an SSH daemon installed on my media center box and would love to be able log in via SSH and get the list of upcoming recordings. As it is, I need to use Remote Desktop and then tell Media Center to run in GDI mode to display the upcoming recordings which is slow and cumbersome. • Windows Phone 8 not interfacing with Zune software

  I just got a Lumia 521 with Windows Phone 8 and am trying to get the device to work with the Zune software on my PC. I still have my Windows Phone 7 device, and the new one is not working the same way. When I plug the WP7 device into the PC's USB port, it automatically fires up Zune and I can sync my podcasts and music etc to the device. But when I plug the Lumia into the PC it doesn't fire up Zune, and if I start Zune manually, it doesn't interface with the phone at all. Perhaps I am missing something and WP8 isn't supposed to use Zune to interface with the phone?

  In Windows 7 is there a way to add a location to the Explorer Favorites navigation pane from the command line? I'm working with systems that are frequently re-imaged, and I would like to automate adding a number of favorite folders to explorer. I imagine these favorites are also stored in the registry. If someone knows where, I could probably automate managing them through the reg command, although this is less than ideal. I've looked at a number of locations related to explorer suggested here, but haven't found them yet. • Windows Server 2003 - passwordless access to \\myhost\ but not \\myhost.mydomain.net\

  I have a Windows Server 2003 system on which passwordless access to local UNC paths is possible using the server's unqualified hostname or its IP address, but not via its FQDN -- even when the hosts file is used to map that FQDN directly to 127.0.0.1. That is: \\127.0.0.1\ - passwordless \\myhost\ - passwordless \\myhost.mydomain.com\ - brings up an authentication dialog Unfortunately, I have a local application trying to resolve UNC paths including the host's FQDN. I've tried resolving myhost.mydomain.com to 127.0.0.1 in both hosts and lmhosts, and calling ping myhost.mydomain.com at the command prompt gives the appearance that this resolution has taken effect; even so, attempting to open \\myhost.mydomain.com\ from Windows Explorer brings up a password prompt, while \\127.0.0.1\ does not. The system is using an OpenDirectory server (Apple's Kerberos+LDAP directory service) for authentication.
