  • When should we use Views, Temporary Tables and Direct Queries ? What are the Performance issues in a

    - by Shantanu Gupta
    I want to know the performance of using Views, Temp Tables and Direct Queries Usage in a Stored Procedure. I have a table that gets created every time when a trigger gets fired. I know this trigger will be fired very rare and only once at the time of setup. Now I have to use that created table from triggers at many places for fetching data and I confirms it that no one make any changes in that table. i.e ReadOnly Table. I have to use this tables data along with multiple tables to join and fetch result for further queries say select * from triggertable By Using temp table select ... into #tx from triggertable join t2 join t3 and so on select a,b, c from #tx --do something select d,e,f from #tx ---do somethign --and so on --around 6-7 queries in a row in a stored procedure. By Using Views create view viewname ( select ... from triggertable join t2 join t3 and so on ) select a,b, c from viewname --do something select d,e,f from viewname ---do somethign --and so on --around 6-7 queries in a row in a stored procedure. This View can be used in other places as well. So I will be creating at database rather than at sp By Using Direct Query select a,b, c from select ... into #tx from triggertable join t2 join t3 join ... --do something select a,b, c from select ... into #tx from triggertable join t2 join t3 join ... --do something . . --and so on --around 6-7 queries in a row in a stored procedure. Now I can create a view/temporary table/ directly query usage in all upcoming queries. What would be the best to use in this case.

  • How can I set my deployment options to script the incremental release of a Visual Studio 2010 databa

    - by littlechris
    I've just started using a VS2010 database project to manage the release of an update to an existing database. I want the deployment option to generate a script that will contain the commands to change my existing database rather than create an entirely new one. E.g I have 10 existing tables - one of which I drop in the new version and I create some new sprocs. I only want the deploy to script the Drop table and Create Procedure commands. I am using VS2010 Premium. Thanks!

  • Drawbacks of Dynamic Query in Sqlserver 2005 ?

    - by KuldipMCA
    I have using the many dynamic Query in my database for the procedures because my filter is not fix so i have taken @filter as parameter and pass in the procedure. Declare @query as varchar(8000) Declare @Filter as varchar(1000) set @query = 'Select * from Person.Address where 1=1 and ' + @Filter exec(@query) Like that my filter contain any Field from the table for comparison. It will affect my performance or not ? is there any alternate way to achieve this type of things

  • How do I create a stored procedure that calls sp_refreshview for each view in the database?

    - by Allrameest
    Today I run this select 'exec sp_refreshview N''['+table_schema+'].['+table_name+']''' from information_schema.tables where table_type = 'view' This generates a lot of: exec sp_refreshview N'[SCHEMA].[TABLE]'. I then copy the result to the query editor window and run all those execs. How do I do this all at once? I would like to have a stored procedure called something like dev.RefreshAllViews which I can execute to do this...

  • Having to keep on restarting the Application Pool?

    - by smclintock
    One of our major websites (built on PHP, MSSQL, IIS7) has started to become unresponsive every few hours and I'm having to log on to the server and restart the application pool. The rest of the websites on the server are fine, so I figure it may be due to a code problem? Whilst I look over all the code, specifically the database connections, would anyone have any advice on how I could better track this down to what is actually causing it to become unresponsive? By "unresponsive" I mean when you enter the URL it doesn't resolve and times out. Thanks for any help, Steven.

  • MySQL Delete from 1 table, using multiple tables

    - by nute
    I would like to delete all the rows found by that query: SELECT cart_abandon.* FROM cart_abandon, cart_product, txn_product, users WHERE cart_abandon.cartid = cart_product.cartid AND cart_product.productid = txn_product.productid AND txn_product.username = users.username AND users.id = cart_abandon.userid AND txn_product.txndate >= cart_abandon.abandondate The thing to keep in mind is that the query here uses 4 different tables, however I only want to delete rows from 1 table (cart_abandon). Is there an easy way to do that? Maybe this: ? DELETE cart_abandon FROM cart_abandon, cart_product, txn_product, users WHERE cart_abandon.cartid = cart_product.cartid AND cart_product.productid = txn_product.productid AND txn_product.username = users.username AND users.id = cart_abandon.userid AND txn_product.txndate >= cart_abandon.abandondate Is that valid? Correct?

    - by Swoosh
    I have a stored procedure which is doing a lot of delete. Hundreds of thousands of records. It is not going to be runnable from the application, but still, i am concerned, that one of my clients accidentally runs it (i had problems earlier due to their "curiosity") :D Yes. there are backups and stuff like that, but I was thinking .... not to scare them ... is there a way to ask the user "are you sure?" before executing it? :) thanks

  • slow record deletion with large ntext values

    - by asking
    I'm having trouble deleting some records via a stored procedure from a table in SQLServer 2008R2 that has ntext columns. The stored proc is timing out and running the query directly takes a very long time. The initial query was a straight "delete from y where x = z" and I've also tried running it in batches of 1000 with transactions but it is still slow and timing out in a stored proc. The majority of the records in the table will not be deleted each time (it's not just a once-off query but will be run other times). The ntext columns are not used in the where clause and I can't change the column types. Any suggestions on the quickest way to delete records with large ntext values? Thanks

  • User has many computers, computers have many attributes in different tables, best way to JOIN?

    - by krismeld
    I have a table for users: USERS: ID | NAME | ---------------- 1 | JOHN | 2 | STEVE | a table for computers: COMPUTERS: ID | USER_ID | ------------------ 13 | 1 | 14 | 1 | a table for processors: PROCESSORS: ID | NAME | --------------------------- 27 | PROCESSOR TYPE 1 | 28 | PROCESSOR TYPE 2 | and a table for harddrives: HARDDRIVES: ID | NAME | ---------------------------| 35 | HARDDRIVE TYPE 25 | 36 | HARDDRIVE TYPE 90 | Each computer can have many attributes from the different attributes tables (processors, harddrives etc), so I have intersection tables like this, to link the attributes to the computers: COMPUTER_PROCESSORS: C_ID | P_ID | --------------| 13 | 27 | 13 | 28 | 14 | 27 | COMPUTER_HARDDRIVES: C_ID | H_ID | --------------| 13 | 35 | So user JOHN, with id 1 owns computer 13 and 14. Computer 13 has processor 27 and 28, and computer 13 has harddrive 35. Computer 14 has processor 27 and no harddrive. Given a user's id, I would like to retrieve a list of that user's computers with each computers attributes. I have figured out a query that gives me a somewhat of a result: SELECT computers.id, processors.id AS p_id, processors.name AS p_name, harddrives.id AS h_id, harddrives.name AS h_name, FROM computers JOIN computer_processors ON (computer_processors.c_id = computers.id) JOIN processors ON (processors.id = computer_processors.p_id) JOIN computer_harddrives ON (computer_harddrives.c_id = computers.id) JOIN harddrives ON (harddrives.id = computer_harddrives.h_id) WHERE computers.user_id = 1 Result: ID | P_ID | P_NAME | H_ID | H_NAME | ----------------------------------------------------------- 13 | 27 | PROCESSOR TYPE 1 | 35 | HARDDRIVE TYPE 25 | 13 | 28 | PROCESSOR TYPE 2 | 35 | HARDDRIVE TYPE 25 | But this has several problems... Computer 14 doesnt show up, because it has no harddrive. Can I somehow make an OUTER JOIN to make sure that all computers show up, even if there a some attributes they don't have? Computer 13 shows up twice, with the same harddrive listet for both. When more attributes are added to a computer (like 3 blocks of ram), the number of rows returned for that computer gets pretty big, and it makes it had to sort the result out in application code. Can I somehow make a query, that groups the two returned rows together? Or a query that returns NULL in the h_name column in the second row, so that all values returned are unique? EDIT: What I would like to return is something like this: ID | P_ID | P_NAME | H_ID | H_NAME | ----------------------------------------------------------- 13 | 27 | PROCESSOR TYPE 1 | 35 | HARDDRIVE TYPE 25 | 13 | 28 | PROCESSOR TYPE 2 | 35 | NULL | 14 | 27 | PROCESSOR TYPE 1 | NULL | NULL | Or whatever result that make it easy to turn it into an array like this [13] => [P_NAME] => [0] => PROCESSOR TYPE 1 [1] => PROCESSOR TYPE 2 [H_NAME] => [0] => HARDDRIVE TYPE 25 [14] => [P_NAME] => [0] => PROCESSOR TYPE 1

  • Get column of a mysql entry

    - by Xelluloid
    Is there a possibility to get the name of the column a database entry belongs to? Perhaps I have three columns with column names col1, col2 and col3. Now I want to select for every column the column with the maximum entry, something like this. Select name_of_column(max(col1,col2,col3)). I know that I can ask for the name of the columns by its ordinal position in the information_schema.COLUMNS table but how do I get the ordinal position of a database entry within a table?

  • Getting a linq table to be dynamically sent to a method

    - by Damian Spaulding
    I have a procedure: var Edit = (from R in Linq.Products where R.ID == RecordID select R).Single(); That I would like to make "Linq.Products" Dynamic. Something like: protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { something(Linq.Products); } public void something(Object MyObject) { System.Data.Linq.Table<Product> Dynamic = (System.Data.Linq.Table<Product>)MyObject; var Edit = (from R in Dynamic where R.ID == RecordID select R).Single(); My problem is that I my "something" method will not be able to know what table has been sent to it. so the static line: System.Data.Linq.Table Dynamic = (System.Data.Linq.Table)MyObject; Would have to reflect somthing like: System.Data.Linq.Table Dynamic = (System.Data.Linq.Table)MyObject; With being a dynamic catch all variable so that Linq can just execute the code just like I hand coded it statically. I have been pulling my hair out with this one. Please help.

  • Listing issue, GROUP mysql

    - by SethCodes
    Here is a mock-up example of Mysql table: | ID | Country | City | ________________________________ | 1 | Sweden | Stockholm | | 2 | Sweden | Stockholm | | 3 | Sweden | Lund | | 4 | Sweden | Lund | | 5 | Germany | Berlin | | 6 | Germany | Berlin | | 7 | Germany | Hamburg | | 8 | Germany | Hamburg | Notice how both rows Country and city have repeated values inside them. Using GROUP BY country, city in my PDO query, the values will not repeat while in loop. Here is PDO for this: $query = "SELECT id, city, country FROM table GROUP BY country, city"; $stmt = $db->query($query); while($row = $stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) : The above code will result in an output like this (some editing in-between). GROUP BY works but the country repeats: Sweden - Stockholm Sweden - Lund Germany - Berlin Germany - Hamburg Using bootstrap collapse and above code, I separate the country from the city with a simple drop down collopase. Here is code: <li> <a data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#<?= $row['id']; ?>" href="search.php?country=<?= $row['country']; ?>"> <?= $row['country']; ?> </a> <div id ="<?= $row['id']; ?>" class="collapse in"> //collapse div here <a href="search.php?city=<?= $row['city']; ?>"> <?= $row['city']; ?><br></a> </div> //end </li> It then looks something like this (once collapse is initiated): Sweden > Stockholm Sweden > Lund Germany >Berlin Germany >Hamburg Here is where I face the problem. The above lists the values Sweden and Germany 2 times. I want Sweden and Germany to only list one time, and the cities listed below, so the desired look is to be this: Sweden // Lists one time > Stockholm > Lund Germany // Lists one time >Berlin >Hamburg I have tried using DISTINCT, GROUP_CONTACT and other methods, yet none get my desired output (above). Suggestions? Below is my current full code in action: <? $query = "SELECT id, city, country FROM table GROUP BY country, city"; $stmt = $db->query($query); while($row = $stmt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)) : ?> <li> <a data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#<?= $row['id']; ?>" href="search.php?country=<?= $row['country']; ?>"> <?= $row['country']; ?> </a> <div id ="<?= $row['id']; ?>" class="collapse in"> //collapse div here <a href="search.php?city=<?= $row['city']; ?>"> <?= $row['city']; ?><br></a> </div> //end </li> <? endwhile ?>

  • SaaS Multi-tenancy Applications: How is data import/export/backup being implemented?

    - by Mark Redman
    How are applications providing import / export (or backups) of data in SaaS based multi-tenancy applications, particularly single database designs? Imports: Keeping things simple I think basic imports are useful, ie CSV to a spec (or a way of providing a mapping between CSV columns and fields in the database. Exports: In single database designs I have seen XML exports and HTML (basic sitse generated) exports of data? I would assume that XML is a better option? How does one cater for relational data? Would you reference various things within XML and provide documentation of the relationships or let users figurethis out? Are vendors providing an export/backup that can be imported back in/restored? Your comments appreciated.

  • Sanitizing DB inputs with XSLT

    - by azathoth
    Hello I've been looking for a method to strip my XML content of apostrophes (') like: <name> Jim O'Connor</name> since my DBMS is complaining of receiving those. By looking at the example described here, that is supposed to replace ' with '', I constructed the following script: <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"> <xsl:output omit-xml-declaration="yes" indent="yes" /> <xsl:template match="node()|@*"> <xsl:copy> <xsl:apply-templates select="node()|@*" /> </xsl:copy> </xsl:template> <xsl:template name="sqlApostrophe"> <xsl:param name="string" /> <xsl:variable name="apostrophe">'</xsl:variable> <xsl:choose> <xsl:when test="contains($string,$apostrophe)"> <xsl:value-of select="concat(substring-before($string,$apostrophe), $apostrophe,$apostrophe)" disable-output-escaping="yes" /> <xsl:call-template name="sqlApostrophe"> <xsl:with-param name="string" select="substring-after($string,$apostrophe)" /> </xsl:call-template> </xsl:when> <xsl:otherwise> <xsl:value-of select="$string" disable-output-escaping="yes" /> </xsl:otherwise> </xsl:choose> </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="node()|@*"> <xsl:apply-templates name="sqlApostrophe"/> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> However, the processor isn't accepting it. What am I missing here? Is there a better way to get rid of the apostrophes? Perhaps another approach for sanitizing DB inputs by using XSLT? Thanks for your help

  • Why MSSQL keeps throwing me Exceptions?

    - by Augusto Càzares
    I have my project in .NET that uses a db in MSSQL Server,i'm using LINQ , sometimes when the projec throws me an exception (Constraint) in a part of the project this same error keeps showing in other part of the project when i do another thing with the db, like when i do an insertion and i had before an exception on delete the insertion throws me the delete exeption, and it remainds this way until i close and open again the project, my major problem is when this happen in my online project, this error in my project causes me problems in the project i'm testing online (i use the same db). I don't know if this exception is on the memory or something but its have been causing me a lot of headechs.

  • How to increase query speed without using full-text search?

    - by andre matos
    This is my simple query; By searching selectnothing I'm sure I'll have no hits. SELECT nome_t FROM myTable WHERE nome_t ILIKE '%selectnothing%'; This is the EXPLAIN ANALYZE VERBOSE Seq Scan on myTable (cost=0.00..15259.04 rows=37 width=29) (actual time=2153.061..2153.061 rows=0 loops=1) Output: nome_t Filter: (nome_t ~~* '%selectnothing%'::text) Total runtime: 2153.116 ms myTable has around 350k rows and the table definition is something like: CREATE TABLE myTable ( nome_t text NOT NULL, ) I have an index on nome_t as stated below: CREATE INDEX idx_m_nome_t ON myTable USING btree (nome_t); Although this is clearly a good candidate for Fulltext search I would like to rule that option out for now. This query is meant to be run from a web application and currently it's taking around 2 seconds which is obviously too much; Is there anything I can do, like using other index methods, to improve the speed of this query?

  • How big teams work with database

    - by Michael Riva
    Lets say I have a team, 20 developers. And we are making a project on .net. In team every one can easy create their tables according to their modules working on it. And we think to use an ORM, can you tell me how can and which ORM tools for good to working with team. Is there any proven way? I m asking becouse I never work with a team, so I dont know the best practices. So you guys what kind of pattern you use?. I realy wonder. The team members can write their unit tests and supply necessary design patterns. What kind of approach I need to create to manage team? What kind of ORM tools that we have to use?

    I want to extract a word from a string column of a table. description =========================== abc order_id: 2 xxxx yyy aa mmm order_id: 3 nn kk yw Expected result set order_id =========================== 2 3 Table will at most have 100 rows, text length is ~256 char and column always has one order_id present. So performance is not an issue. In Oracle, I can use REGEXP_SUBSTR for this problem. How would I solve this in MySQL?

  • Alternative to NOT EXISTS

    - by Dave Colwell
    Hi all, I have two tables linked by an ID column, lets call them Table A and table B. My goal is to find all the records in table A that have no record in table B. For instance: Table A: ID----Value 1-----value1 2-----value2 3-----value3 4-----value4 Table B ID----Value 1-----x 2-----y 4-----z 4-----l As you can see, record with ID = 3 does not exist in table B, so i want a query that will give me record 3 from table A. the way i am currently doing this is by saying AND NOT EXISTS (SELECT ID FROM TableB) but since the tables are huge, the performance on this is terrible. Also, when i tried using a Left Join where TableB.ID is null, it didnt work. Can anyone suggest an alternative?
