  • Computer is running slow with Ubuntu

    - by Bart
Why my computer runs too slow when I install Ubuntu or any other Linux (Debian works better than other distros), but with windows works fine...? My configuration is: Processor: Intel Celeron CPU 1.70GHz Graphics: Ati Radeon 9250 128 MB HD: Western Digital 120GB RAM: 2GB DDR1 Motherboard: MSI (MS-6566) Is there anything unsuported by Ubuntu, or any Linux. If so, is there any way to get it work fine (visual effects are not important to me). What do I need to do?

  • Installing NVIDIA driver causes black screen (750M)

    - by aftrumpet
I have a dual boot set up on a Lenovo Ideapad Y500 with NVIDIA 750M and I am having problems installing the graphics cards. I have made sure to install both linux-headers-generic and linux-source, and yet have ended up with a black screen whether I install nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates, nvidia-experimental-310, and nvidia-319. I even tried enabling proprietary drivers through settings and still ended up with a black screen on boot. Is my graphics card just not supported yet, or is there a way to fix this?

  • Laptop freezes and seems to crash, but continues working after waiting for a few minutes [closed]

    - by Corwin
I've had this old notebook laying around and because i was missing a second machine (My wife usually steals the first ;) ) I considered installing Linux. As a php developer I work with Linux servers (usually fedora) on a daily basis and because its an older machine that I want to use for development, linux seemed the best option. Speedwise I expected a good experience, better than Windows 7 on the same machine. The results where terrible. I tried ubuntu 12.04. The shell never got past showing the background. The system doesn't freeze since the mouse still works and I can use ctrl+alt+f2 etc to enter terminal mode. I expected hardware problems en even exchanged the harddisk en Ram memory. No luck though, so I started over and tried 11.10 Same results so I tried 10.04.4 which did install properly. Not sure if unity was the problem, but it seems likely. But then I tried simply things like surfing on the net, the system frooze and I thought it crashed so after a few minutes I pulled the plug and rebooted. But it happened again and I waited. After a few minutes the system came back to life like nothing happened. Long story short. Besides the fact that the entire interface is very sluggish, any and all graphical functions freezes the system. The more elaborate the animation would be, the longer it freezes. I switch chromium from window to fullscreenmode and had to wait 15 minutes to continue. I don't see the animation that's probably supposed to be in between. It just freezes and then after unfreezing its fullscreen. I don't think its a bug. I suspect the problem is with my graphics card. Like I said, its and old system. So old that I can't even find the original Ati drivers anywere. (I'll post the details of my system at the end of my post) I'm at a loss as to what to do next. I tried other Distro's. So far only dreamlinux works normally. Linux Mint won't start as a live CD. I think I simply need a driver update but I can't find them anywhere. Does anyone have the same experience ? Maybe even someone who has or had the same notebook running Ubuntu at some point ? Anyway, here are the specs: http://www.nec-driver.com/nec-driver/NEC-Versa-P550---FP550-Driver_421.html

  • NVIDIA graphics driver in Ubuntu 12.04

    - by user924501
So my overall goal is that I want to be able to code with CUDA enabled applications. However, upon many days of searching, using installation walkthroughs, and reinstalling countless times after driver failure... I'm now here as a last resort. I cannot get Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to install the NVIDIA 295.59 driver for my GeForce GT 540M NVIDIA graphics card. My main system specs is as follows... (I believe having the Intel processor may be the problem) DELL Laptop XPS L502X Intel® Core™ i7-2620M CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4 Intel Integrated Graphics 64 bit NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M Ubuntu 12.04 LTS All other specs are irrelevant unless I forgot something? Methods Tried: aptitude install nvidia-current (all packages) Results: Nothing really happened. Nothing in the additional drivers menu appeared, nor was the NVIDIA X Server settings application allowing access because it thought there was no NVIDIA X Server installed. Downloaded driver from nvidia.com. Set nomodeset in the grub boot menu through /boot/grub/grub.cfg Went to console and turned off lightdm. Installed the driver, but it said the pre-install failed? (mean anything?) Started up lightdm again. Results: NVIDIA X Server settings still didn't notice it. Even tried to do nvidia-xconfig multiple times. I also went into the config file to make sure the driver setting said "nvidia". aptitude install nvidia-173 (all packages) Results: Couldn't find the xorg-video-abi-10 virtual package. It was nowhere to be found and the ubuntu forums everywhere had no answers. Lots of people were having this problem. This is easily done in windows, simply download the driver and debug in visual studio with no problems at all. I'd like clear step-by-step instructions on how I should go about this. I'm relatively new to linux but I can find my way around pretty well so you aren't talking to a straight-up beginner. Also, if you think another thread may have the answer please post because I was having a hard time looking for my specific type of problem. TL;DR I want to have access to my GPU so I can code with CUDA while in Ubuntu 12.04 on my 64 bit laptop that also has Intel integrated graphics on the processor. Solution: sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

  • Problems configuring an SSH tunnel to a Nexentastor appliance for use with headless Crashplan

    - by Rob Smallshire
Problem I am attempting to configure an SSH tunnel to a NexentaStor appliance from either a Windows or Linux computer so that I can connect a Crashplan Desktop GUI to a headless Crashplan server running on the Nexenta box, according to these instructions on the Crashplan support site: Connect to a Headless CrashPlan Desktop. So far, I've failed to get a working SSH tunnel from from either either a Windows client (using Putty) or a Linux client (using command line SSH). I'm fairly sure the problem is at the receiving end with NexentaStor. A blog article - CrashPlan for Backup on Nexenta - indicates that it could be made to work only after "after enabling TCP forwarding in Nexenta in /etc/ssh/sshd_config" - although I'm not sure how to go about that or specifically what I need to do. Things I have tried Ensuring the Crashplan server on the Nexenta box is listening on port 4243 $ netstat -na | grep LISTEN | grep 42 127.0.0.1.4243 *.* 0 0 131072 0 LISTEN *.4242 *.* 0 0 65928 0 LISTEN Establishing a tunnel from a Linux host: $ ssh -L 4200:localhost:4243 admin:10.0.0.56 and then, from another terminal on the Linux host, using telnet to verify the tunnel: $ telnet localhost 4200 Trying ::1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is #^]'. with nothing more, although the Crashplan server should respond with something. From Windows, using PuTTY have followed the instructions on the Crashplan support site to establish an equivalent tunnel, but then telnet on Windows gives me no response at all and the Crashplan GUI can't connect either. The PuTTY log for the tunnelled connection shows reasonable output: ... 2011-11-18 21:09:57 Opened channel for session 2011-11-18 21:09:57 Local port 4200 forwarding to localhost:4243 2011-11-18 21:09:57 Allocated pty (ospeed 38400bps, ispeed 38400bps) 2011-11-18 21:09:57 Started a shell/command 2011-11-18 21:10:09 Opening forwarded connection to localhost:4243 but the telnet localhost 4200 command from Windows does nothing at all - it just waits with a blank terminal. On the NexentaStor server I've examined the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and everything seems 'normal' - and I've commented out the ListenAddress entries to ensure that I'm listening on all interfaces. How can I establish a tunnel, and how can I verify that it is working?
