An artist has a one-to-many relationship with an album. album.artistId relates the album to artist.id. I'm thinking along the lines of Hibernate here. • MySQL returns fewer rows with GROUP BY statement

  I've got a MySQL database that stores image information. Right now it only has three rows stored in the database, and each row is associated with something like, for instance, a unique blog post via a key column. As of right now, one "blog post key" has one image, and one has two images in the database. When I run this query, MySQL returns all three rows. SELECT `id`, `key`, `url` FROM (`images`) WHERE `key` = 'TpaS4G5h' OR `key` = '78855e44' However, when i add the GROUP BY statement I only get two rows... one for each key. SELECT `id`, `key`, `url` FROM (`images`) WHERE `key` = 'TpaS4G5h' OR `key` = '78855e44' GROUP BY `key` I'm sure there is a simple solution, but I don't know what it is... so any help would be really appreciated.   I'm having some issues with a group by clause in SQL. I have the following basic function: CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fn_GetWinsYear (@Year int) RETURNS int AS BEGIN declare @W int select @W = count(1) from tblGames where WinLossForfeit = 'W' and datepart(yyyy,Date) = @Year return @W END I'm trying to run the following basic query: select dbo.fn_GetWinsYear(datepart(yyyy,date)) from tblGames group by datepart(yyyy,date) However, I'm encountering the following error message: Column 'tblGames.Date' is invalid in the select list because it is not contained in either an aggregate function or the GROUP BY clause. Any ideas why this is occurring? FYI, I know I can remove the function and combine into one call but I'd like to keep the function in place if possible.

  I use the following query: select * from A LEFT JOIN B on ( A.t_id != B.t_id) to get all the records in A that are not in B. The results are fine except when table B is completely empty, but then I do not get any records, even from table A. Later It wont work yet! • Database Optimization techniques for amateurs.

  Can we get a list of basic optimization techniques going (anything from modeling to querying, creating indexes, views to query optimization). It would be nice to have a list of these, one technique per answer. As a hobbyist I would find this to be very useful, thanks. And for the sake of not being too vague, let's say we are using a maintstream DB such as MySQL or Oracle, and that the DB will contain 500,000-1m or so records across ~10 tables, some with foreign key contraints, all using the most typical storage engines (eg: InnoDB for MySQL). And of course, the basics such as PKs are defined as well as FK contraints.

  Hello, I have a SQL Server 2008 database. This database has two tables called Customer and Order. These tables are defined as follows: Customer -------- ID, First Name, Last Name Order ----- ID, CustomerID, Date, Description I am trying to write a query that returns all of the customers in my database. If the user has placed at least one order, I want to return the information associated with the most recent order placed. Currently, I have the following: SELECT * FROM Customer c LEFT OUTER JOIN Order o ON c.[ID]=o.[CustomerID] As you can imagine, this will return all of the orders associated with a customer. In reality though, I only want the most recent one. How do I do this in SQL? Thank you!

• MS SQL Specific Tables Hanging at Queries

  I have SQL Server 2008. I run a query in a table on a database. The weirdest thing keeps happening. I run a simple select statement on the table. I know there are 62 rows in the table but it gets stuck at row 48 and goes on "querying...". Waited already for hours and it didn't move on from there. I only know of two programs, and one reporting service connecting to that particular table and one other user. Does anyone have any idea on what could be causing this and how I could trace the source of the lock on that table? As a side note, I noted that the logs only had a notice that Autogrow failed the day before I checked. Could this have something to do with it?

  I am using Bash script to read line by line from a text file, which has special characters in it (regular expression). When I use echo "${SOME_VAR}" it does not display the text as is. I am familiar with Prevent * to be expanded in the bash script. How can I display and use the text as is? • PDO:sqlite doesnt INSERT data, yet no error

  After an AJAX query, a XML file is returned. I'm able to "parse" that file, but when it comes to getting the "innerHTML" (or in this case "innerXML" lol) of an element, I fail. If the XML element, let's say "content", only contained text I could do: content.childNodes[0].nodeValue (assuming that content references the XML element "content"). But that element contains other elements: <stackoverflow reason="tribute to this page"> <content> <div><span><p>Some more HTML elements</p></span></div> </content> </stackoverflow> I need to copy the content of <content> to an existing <div> in the page, how could I do that? • Dynamic access to tables from another database inside an user function

  I have an user defined table function in SQL Server that aggregate data from several tables including a couple of tables of another database. That is done hardcoding the name of the database in the queries, but we want to make the database name configurable (because our databases usually share the server with the databases of other applications). I tried to construct a dynamic query string inside the function using the database name that is stored in a configuration table, but: When I tried exec(@sqlStatement) SQL Server said that execute string is not allowed inside a function. Then I tried exec sp_executesql @sqlStatement and the function was created, but when you execute it SQL Server says that inside a function you can only run extended functions and procedures. So the question is: is possible create a function or stored procedure that access a table in another database without having to recreate the function when the database name is different? TIA.

  Hi, I'm starting to develop an activity stream. I've read both How to implement the activity stream in a social network and What’s the best manner of implementing a social activity stream?. What I haven't found is the best way to add comments to the activities. As in facebook, each comment can be commented by another person. If each activity comment is saved as another activity, then I would not be able to get the activity of that comment without doing a query. So the solution I'm thinking is to save the comments inside the serialize data field of each activity. If the user wants to delete his comment, I would have to update that activity. Is this the correct solution? Is there a better approach? Thanks!

• How do I display each view once as they are loaded, in Android?

  I have an Android application that works off of a smaller database, around 300 entries. To view the database, I have created a custom view that contains individual rows of data. Then I query the database, and add each line to a newly created custom view. The problem is that it takes a little white for all of this to be created/loaded, so when you open the application, it sits for a few seconds. How can I load one line of data, then display it, then the next, append it, etc.?

• No mapping for LONGVARCHAR in Hibernate 3.2

  I am running Hibernate 3.2.0 with MySQL 5.1. After updating the group_concat_max_len in MySQL (because of a group_concat query that was exceeding the default value), I got the following exception when executing a SQLQuery with a group_concat clause: "No Dialect mapping for JDBC type: -1" -1 is the java.sql.Types value for LONGVARCHAR. Evidently, increasing the group_concat_max_len value causes calls to group_concat to return a LONGVARCHAR value. This appears to be an instance of this bug: http://opensource.atlassian.com/projects/hibernate/browse/HHH-3892 I guess there is a fix for this issue in Hibernate 3.5, but that is still a development version, so I am hesitant to put it into production, and don't know if it would cause issues for other parts of my code base. I could also just use JDBC queries, but then I have to replace every instance of a SQLQuery with a group_concat clause. Any other suggestions?

  I'm using the following code to post to the server which is then sent to a MYSQL query to find matches via search. $.ajax({ url: '/search/spotlight/', data: "q=" + $(this).val(), success: function(data) { } }); When Q's val has spaces in it, it's creating problems. I'm wondering if I'm handling this correctly? Do I need to encode the value in the AJAX call? Or is this a problem on my backend, which is ColdFusion Right now JQUERY is posting the following to the server: /search/spotlight/?q=FirstName%20LastName is this right?

• PHP, MySQL - would results-array shuffle be quicker than "select... order by rand()"?

  I've been reading a lot about the disadvantages of using "order by rand" so I don't need update on that. I was thinking, since I only need a limited amount of rows retrieved from the db to be randomized, maybe I should do: $r = $db->query("select * from table limit 500"); for($i;$i<500;$i++) $arr[$i]=mysqli_fetch_assoc($r); shuffle($arr); (i know this only randomizes the 500 first rows, be it). would that be faster than $r = $db->("select * from table order by rand() limit 500"); let me just mention, say the db tables were packed with more than...10,000 rows. why don't you do it yourself?!? - well, i have, but i'm looking for your experienced opinion. thanks!

• Django Template - Convert python list into a javascript object

  I am working on a django / python website I have a page where I want to display a table of search results The list of results is passed in to the template as normal I also want to make this list of objects accessible to the javascript code My first solution was just create another view that returned json format. But each page load required calling the query twice. So then I tried only downloading the data using the json view and printing the table using javascript. but this is also not desirable as now the presentation layer is mixed into the javascript code. is there a way to create a javascript object from the python list as the page is rendered?

• Unique identification string in php

  Currently me and my friend are developing a website, for what we will call 'projects' we just have a basic auto increment id in the database used to navigate to projects such as oururl.com/viewproject?id=1 but we started thinking, if we have alot of posted projects thats going to be a LONG url. So we need to somehow randomly generate a alphanumerical string about 6 characters long. We want the chance of the string being duplicated being extremely low and of course we will query the database before assigning an identifier. Thanks for anyhelp, means alot!
