• Fatal Error when using ADODB in VB6 on Windows Server 2003 SP2

  We've got a legacy app (VB6) which works fine on an old Windows Server 2003 box and has been for many years. Recently we've had to move it to a different physical location and in doing this we cloned the box with virtualisation and placed it elsewhere. In theory these two environments should be identical. On the new box however the app falls over when calling the RecordCount method of an ADODB.Recordset. I should say that I can successfully read the ADODB.RecordSet.Properties.Count property with no problem on the line before. The event viewer reports the following: Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 28/09/2012 Time: 11:15:27 User: N/A Computer: APP01 Description: Faulting application Control.exe, version 1.0.0.6, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.2.3790.4789, fault address 0x0002c6e4. I can only imagine there is something wrong with using ADODB within a virtualised environment. Any ideas?

• Local variable assign versus direct assign; properties and memory.

  In objective-c I see a lot of sample code where the author assigns a local variable, assigns it to a property, then releases the local variable. Is there a practical reason for doing this? I've been just assigning directly to the property for the most part. Would that cause a memory leak in any way? I guess I'd like to know if there's any difference between this: HomeScreenBtns *localHomeScreenBtns = [[HomeScreenBtns alloc] init]; self.homeScreenBtns = localHomeScreenBtns; [localHomeScreenBtns release]; and this: self.homeScreenBtns = [[HomeScreenBtns alloc] init]; Assuming that homeScreenBtns is a property like so: @property (nonatomic, retain) HomeScreenBtns *homeScreenBtns; I'm getting ready to submit my application to the app store so I'm in full optimize/QA mode.

• How to track history of db tables that include many-to-many mapping tables?

  I have seen several questions here on tracking db history, but can't seem to find one that matches our situation. We need to track the history of several tables, some of which are many-to-many linking tables. Eg say we have this schema: EntityA id name EntityB id name ABLink A_id B_id So, tracking changes to EntityA or EntityB seems pretty straightforward. We can keep a log table with the same columns plus a date stamp and user. But what about the links? How do we maintain the set of links that are valid for a given version of the data? We need to be able to recreate a history of the data showing changes in chronological order. So if a link added or deleted, we indicate that. Etc.

• apple push notification review

  Hey all, I am implementing APN's and want to release without switching it on yet.. So the app will happily receive them. but we will choose not to send them until later. My question is, as when we want to send notifications is in our control, do apple care about this when reviewing the app. I thinking not, maybe they send a test notification to the device to prove it works? but if anyone has any experience in dealing with this any info would be much appreciated.   Hello, I'm storing timestamp as int field. And on large table it takes too long to get rows inserted at date because I'm using mysql function FROM_UNIXTIME. SELECT * FROM table WHERE FROM_UNIXTIME(timestamp_field, '%Y-%m-%d') = '2010-04-04' Is there any ways to speed this query? Maybe I should use query for rows using timestamp_field >= x AND timestamp_field < y? Thank you I've just tried this query... SELECT * FROM table WHERE timestamp_field >= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 00:00:00') AND timestamp_field <= UNIX_TIMESTAMP('2010-04-14 23:59:59') but there is no any performance bonuses. :(

• Application leaking Strings?

  My .net application does some heavy string loading/manipulation and unfortunately the memory consumption keeps rising and rising and when looking at it with a profiler I see alot of unreleased string instances. Now at one point of time or another I do need all objects t hat do have these string fields, but once done, I could get rid of e.g. the half of it and I Dispose() and set the instances to null, but the Garbage Collector does not to pick that up.. they remain in memory (even after half an hour after disposing etc). Now how do I get properly rid of unneeded strings/object instances in order to release them? They are nowhere referenced anymore (afaik) but e.g. aspose's memory profiler says their distance to the gc's root is '3'?

  In Visual Studio 2008 (and others) when creating a .NET or silverlight application if you look at your project properties, it seems like you can only have one assembly name - across all configurations. I would like to compile my application as: MyAppDebug - in debug mode and just MyApp - in release mode Does anyone know if this is possible? Edit: It seems some people are questioning the reasoning behind the question, so I'll explain a little further: I'm working on a Silverlight application which gets automatically uploaded to our test site when I to a "build solution". The trouble is, the test team are now testing the online version, whilst I work on a new one. So, I want to have a url like .\MyApp.html for the regular version that the QA team will test and then .\MyApp.html?version=debug for the current version that I'm working on.

• Django Initial for a ManyToMany Field

  I have a form that edits an instance of my model. I would like to use the form to pass all the values as hidden with an inital values of username defaulting to the logged in user so that it becomes a subscribe form. • Are there Python ORMs out there that support multiple independent databases concurrently in use?

  I'm writing an application in Python where I wish to use sqlite as the backing store for documents edited by the app, with documents generally living in memory, but being saved to disk-based databases when the application saves. Ideally I'd like to use something like an ORM to make access to the data from my Python application code simple. Unfortunately it seems like the majority of Python ORMs, including SQLAlchemy, SQLObject, Django, and Storm, associate the database connection (or engine or whatever) with the classes representing table data, rather than instances of those classes. This restricts these ORMs to working with a single database connection across all instances. Since I'd like to support having multiple documents open simultaneously, this isn't going to work for me. Are there any ORMs out there that support this usage model in Python? Bazaar seems to support this, but it's quite out of date, and at first glance appears to have some other shortcomings. Thanks for any suggestions!

• Include all imports in Air application Bundle?

  How can I import all files and classes into my AIR bundle... it must take a note that I created first a flex project, and set it's main class as Actionscript (.as) . • UIActionSheet cancel button strange behaviour

  I have a UIBarButtonItem opening an action sheet to offer users choices about what to do. Everything works as expected unless I try to click on the "Cancel" button. The target of the button appears to have moved up from where it should be. I can only activate it by clicking somewhere in the middle of the "Cancel" and "Ok" buttons. I've tried at action sheets in other applications and they work fine, so it's not just my big thumb. • Database error when deleting entry in my rails app.

  Hi Everyone...again! I have almost everything in my Rails app working, with the exception of detroying entries. I can destroy entries for companies but not kases and people. The following error show when trying to do so: SQLite3::SQLException: no such column: kases_people.kase_id: SELECT * FROM "kases" INNER JOIN "kases_people" ON "kases".id = "kases_people".kase_id WHERE ("kases_people".person_id = 5 ) I suspect this is an error with the party model for the has_many :through associations that I dont fully understand.   I'd like to know how can I sort values in the Django admin dropdowns. • CF - Mobile Managed Gestures

  Im looking for a nice demo/sample using Windows Mobile Managed Gestures. I have a main view that contains a single panel. Every item in the panel is another panel containing pictureBox and a label. I would like to implement scrooling (finger flicking) to avoid using thin scroolers. Are the Windows Mobile Managed Gestures the right solution to get this working, if so can some one provide me with a begginers demo? I downloaded the source code from http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/gestureswm/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=3438 but i would need a simple example using this source. Also a question ... does this work only on 6.5? Even if i got this working is there a way to support this in 6.0 ? thanx!

• NSDate & Memory management

  Hi, memory management still gives me grief. This time it is an NSDate iVar that I init using NSDate *myNSDate = [[NSDate date] firstDayOfMonth]; with a method call to - (NSDate *)firstDayOfMonth { NSDateComponents *tmpDateComponents = [[NSCalendar currentCalendar] components:NSYearCalendarUnit | NSMonthCalendarUnit | NSEraCalendarUnit | NSWeekCalendarUnit | NSWeekdayOrdinalCalendarUnit fromDate:self]; [tmpDateComponents setDay:1]; [tmpDateComponents setHour:0]; [tmpDateComponents setMinute:0]; [tmpDateComponents setSecond:0]; return [[NSCalendar currentCalendar] dateFromComponents:tmpDateComponents]; } At the end of the init call the retain count is at 1 (Note the iVar is not defined as a property). When I step into the viewWillAppear method the myNSDate has vanished. I tried to do an explicit retain on it, but that only lasts until I update the iVar using the above method again. I though - ok - I add the retain to the return of the function, but that makes the leak analyser throw up an error. What am I doing wrong?

• New hire expectations... (Am I being unreasonable?)

  I work for a very small custom software shop. We currently consist me and my boss. My boss is an old FoxPro DOS developer and OOP makes him uncomfortable. He is planning on taking a back seat in the next few years to hopefully enjoy a “partial retirement”. I will be taking over the day to day operations and we are now desperately looking for more help. We tried Monster.com, Dice.com, and others a few years ago when we started our search. We had no success. We have tried outsourcing overseas (total disaster), hiring kids right out of college (mostly a disaster but that’s where I came from), interns (good for them, not so good for us) and hiring laid off “experienced” developers (there was a reason they were laid off). I have heard hiring practices discussed on podcasts, blogs, etc... and have tried a few. The “Fizz Buzz” test was a good one. One kid looked physically ill before he finally gave up. I think my problem is that I have grown so much as a developer since I started here that I now have a high standard. I hear/read very intelligent people podcasts and blogs and I know that there are lots of people out there that can do the job. I don’t want to settle for less than a “good” developer. Perhaps my expectations are unreasonable. I expect any good developer (entry level or experienced) to be billable (at least paying their own wage) in under one month. I expect any good developer to be able to be productive (at least dangerous) in any language or technology with only a few days of research/training. I expect any good developer to be able to take a project from initial customer request to completion with little or no help from others. Am I being unreasonable? What constitutes a valuable developer? What should be expected of an entry level developer? What should be expected of an experienced developer? I realize that everyone is different but there has to be some sort of expectations standard, right? I have been giving the test project below to potential canidates to weed them out. Good idea? Too much? Too little? Please let me know what you think. Thanks. • How good is my method of embedding version numbers into my application using Mercurial hooks?

  This is not quite a specifc question, and more me like for a criticism of my current approach. I would like to include the program version number in the program I am developing. This is not a commercial product, but a research application so it is important to know which version generated the results. My method works as follows: There is a "pre-commit" hook in my .hg/hgrc file link to .hg/version_gen.sh version_gen.sh consists solely of: hg parent --template "r{rev}_{date|shortdate}" > version.num In the makefile, the line version="%__VERSION__% in the main script is replaced with the content of the version.num file. Are there better ways of doing this? The only real short coming I can see is that if you only commit a specfic file, version.num will be updated, but it won't be commited, and if I tried to add always committing that file, that would result in an infite loop (unless I created some temp file to indicate I was already in a commit, but that seems ugly...).
