• Open Source Project all dressed up but nowhere to go...

  Over the past 2 years myself and a colleague have built an online statistical analysis application using a mixture of silverlight, wcf and R. I (a c# programmer) wrote all the silverlight and wcf stuff whilst my colleague (a statistician) came up with the stats algorithms and wrote the R code. Now we think that this app is fairly unique - a rich gui online statistics application that is much more intuitive than all the other online stat apps that I've seen. But despite this we don't really know where to go with the project, mainly for the following reasons: 1) Its fairly complicated stuff - without the mix of programing and stats skills it would be difficult for anyone to "get into" the project and contribute. 2) We are stalled by a lack of a proper place to host the site. Currently it sits on the family windows 7 media centre, not exactly the best place to host it as it could interfere with the missus trying to watch Corrie/Friends/Oprah etc. Soo, anyone got any ideas on how to move forward with this? I guess that my strength is programing not marketing so despite working hard at this for the past couple of years I feel that I've reached a dead end! Also, does anyone know of any free windows hosting for open source projects? If I could find a proper place to put the app I might feel re-energised about the whole thing. Brian Keller announced yesterday (blog post here) the availability of a vm refresh (new expiration set for 6/1/2011). What is part of the refresh? • Any algorithm to dedicate a set of known resources to a set of known requirements (scheduling)

  I'm developing an application to help school principals in dedicating teachers to classes and courses over the hours of a week (scheduling). The scenario is roughly something like this: User enters the list of teachers and their free times into the system User enters the list of courses for this semester User enters the list of available classes into the system Well, up to here, there is no big deal. Just simple CRUD operations and nothing extraordinary. However, now what makes this system useful is that the application should automatically and based on an algorithm create the semester scheduling. I think you've got the main idea here. For example application should suggest that teacher A should go to class 1 for mathematics, and at the same time teacher B should go to class 2 for physics. This way all of the classes would be dedicated to lessons and teacher times won't overlap each other. Piece a cake for school principal. However, I can't find a good algorithm for this resource dedication. I mean it seems hard to me. Searching Google resulted in articles from different websites, but they are of no help and use to me.   PROBLEM: We have N physical machines(PMs) each with ram Ri, cpu Ci and a set of currently scheduled VMs each with ram requirement ri and ci respectively Moving(Migrating) any VM from one PM to other has a cost associated which depends on its ram ri. A PM with no VMs is shut down to save power. Our target is to minimize the weighted sum of (N,migration cost) by migrating some VMs i.e. minimize the number of working PMs as well as not to degrade the service level due to excessive migrations. My Approach: Brute Force approach is choosing the minimum loaded PM and try to fit its VMs to other PMs by First Fit Decreasing algorithm or we can select the victim PMs and target PMs based on their loading level and shut down victims if possible by moving their VMs to targets. I tried this Greedy approach on the Data of Baadal(IIT-D cloud) but It isn't giving promising results. I have also tried to study the Ant colony optimization for dynamic VM consolidating but was unable to understand very much. • Help with dual booting Windows 8.1 Professional and Ubuntu 13.10

  I recently installed a clean version of Windows 8.1 Professional on my Lenovo Y500 (with Samsung 256GB 840 Pro SSD). I have Windows all set up and running normally. I am trying to dual boot Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 13.10, but the installation procedure don't allow me to either "Install alongside..." or shows my SSD partitions correctly when I chose the "Something Else" option. I have created a 25GB partition of free space in the Windows disk manager, but on the installation screen on Ubuntu, it shows the whole drive as a free space. I have tried installing with a burned .ISO disk and a bootable USB, the results are the same for both. • Can you help diagnose why this laptop running ubantu has crashed and seemingly died

  Love any suggestions you have to this problem. My laptop had Window Vista on previously (sorry). Something went wrong, I can't remember, and I tried to reinstall but couldn't, installed a replacement second hand HD, and installed Ubantu instead. It worked ok for a little while, before crashing. I ended up reloading Ubantu three times. It works for a while after (say 3-5 hrs of domestic web browsing), and then crashes. When I turn it on now, it comes up with some options to restart in safe mode, run tests and so on. I can't get it to start normally. I'm not going to re-install again. Below are screen shots of what happens when I follow some of these test options. These screen shots mean nothing to me. Any ideas? • Mercurial says "nothing changed", but it did. Sometimes my software is too clever.

  It seems I have found a "bug" in Mercurial. It takes a shortcut when checking for differences in tracked files. Solution - I will just change my script to apply the modification time from the SCCS history to the file prior to commit. A "touch -t " will do that easily.

  I am trying to learn java servlet/jsp with the MVC concept and built the simplest MVC application. Now I want give more detail to it to enhance my understanding. If I would need to register a new row in a table in the database, how should we pass the various value of column into the system? For example, the user might want to register a new event in his planner and the detail of the event involves the 'where', 'when', 'who', 'detail', etc. Should pass all this long value from the servlet's parameter, i.e: the http link?   Hi all I'm trying to do texture mapping using Modern OpenGL and GLSL 150. • Windows Azure AppFabric SDK - June CTP - Download issues

  Microsoft has announced availability of the June CTP for Windows Azure AppFabric. See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/appfabric/archive/2011/06/20/announcing-the-windows-azure-appfabric-june-ctp.aspx. This is an exciting release and provides greater insight into where the AppFabric team is heading in terms of developer and management tooling. Microsoft is offering space in the cloud to experiment with the CTP, but this is limited, so register early to get a namespace! You can download the SDK for the June CTP. However, we ran into a lot of trouble trying to do this today. Whenever we followed the link, we ended up on the page for the May CTP. We found what appeared to be a workaround which we were able to repeat on another box (and which I reported on Connect), but then a few minutes later I couldn't repeat it. Just now, the given link appears to be working every time in IE, but not in Firefox!   Frankly, the behaviour seems random!   It looks like the same URL points to two different pages, and I suspect that which page you end up on is hit and miss. The link to the download page is http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17691. If you end up on the wrong page, try again later and you may get to the right place. Or try googling "Windows Azure AppFabric SDK CTP – June Update" and following a link to this page. For some reason, that sometimes seems to work. • All in a Day's Work: Unblocking Multiple Downloaded Files with a Single Command

  Files downloaded using Internet Explorer retain Internet Zone permission level and hence are “Blocked” by default on Windows 7 machines. Honestly, while an added overhead for developers; I really appreciate this feature as it provides a good protection layer for casual web users. My workaround is to simply unblock the downloaded zip file (if download was a zip file) which, in turn, unblocks the files stored within. Today however, I was left with a situation where I had to “Open” and “Copy” the content rather than “Save” a zip file. That of course left me with a few dozen files I have to manually unblock. A few minutes of internet search lead me to the link below which worked like a charm: 1-Download streams.exe from SystInternals - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897440.aspx 2-Go to command prompt (cmd.exe) 3-Navigate to where you have streams.exe installed 4-Use command line switches: streams.exe –s –d “<folder path>” This removed the Internet Zone restrictions from all files under “<folder path>” and its subfolders as well. • Double entries in the gnome 3 task bar

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3. All was working well except that graphics were slow and even moving a window on the screen seemed slow. I installed the fglrx ati driver. Which seems to have improved matters. But on first login I had all gnome items duplicated. That is my task bar has the ubuntu sign, then says Applications, then places then the ubuntu sign then Aplications and then places. Any application I run produces two icons at the bottom of the screen. This was after a reboot. I rebooted again. Now I have 3!! On the right each set of icons such as printer is also trippled!! • Is there a way to make catalyst driver work in Trusty for the radeon hd4330?

  Though official Catalyst software 13.1 is suitable for ati radeon hd4330, it can't be installed on Ubuntu 14.04 as it can't support Xorg = 7.6 As I need proprietary drivers for trusty, I would like to know if there is a way to bypass this limitation ?   I have an asp.net mvc "edit" page which allows the user to make edits to the parent entity, and then also "create" child entities on the same page. Note: I'm making these data transfer objects up. public class CustomerViewModel { public int Id { get; set; } public Byte[] Timestamp { get; set; } public string CustomerName { get; set; } public etc.. public CustomerOrderCreateViewModel CustomerOrderCreateViewModel { get; set; } } In my view I have two html form's. One for Customer "edit" Http Posts, and the other for CustomerOrder "create" Http Posts. In the view page, I load the CustomerOrder "create" form in using: <div id="CustomerOrderCreate"> @Html.Partial("Vendor/_CustomerOrderCreatePartial", Model.CustomerOrderCreateViewModel) </div> The CustomerOrder html form action posts to a different controller HttpPost ActionResult than the Customer "edit" Action Result. My concern is this, on the CustomerOrder controller, in the HttpPost ActionResult [HttpPost] public ActionResult Create(CustomerOrderCreateViewModel vm) { if (!ModelState.IsValid) { return [What Do I Return Here] } ...[Persist to database code]... } I don't know what to return if the model state isn't valid. Right now it's not a problem, because jquery unobtrusive validation handles validation on the client. But what if I need more complex validation (ie: the server needs to handle the validation).

• So now Google has said no to old browsers when can the rest of us follow suit?

  Google recently announced that they will no longer support older browsers on Aug 1st: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13639875 http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/our-plans-to-support-modern-browsers.html For this reason, soon Google Apps will only support modern browsers. Beginning August 1st, we’ll support the current and prior major release of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis. Each time a new version is released, we’ll begin supporting the update and stop supporting the third-oldest version. There is nothing worse than looking at the patching of code that takes place to support older browsers. If we could all move towards a standards only web (I'm looking at you IE9) then surely we could spend more time programming good web apps and less trying to make them run equally on terrible non standards compliant older browsers. So when can the rest of us expect to be able to tell our clients that we no longer support older browsers? Because it seems that large corporates will continue to run older browsers and even if google chrome frame can be installed without admin privileges (it's coming soon, currently in beta) we can't expect all users to be motivated to do this. I appreciate any thoughts.

• XNA 2D Spritesheet drawing rendering problem

  I'm making a tile-based game, using one spritesheet containing all tile graphics. Each tile has a size of 32x32 pixels. The main problem is: when I draw the tile to the screen, if the tile position x and y are not rounded or if scale is activated in spriteBatch.Draw() method (scale != 1.0f), I get some lines of adjacent tiles on the spritesheet into the current tile drawed. I already tried setting SamplerState to PointClamp, removing AntiAlias, but still doesn't work. Here I'll show images of some tests that I made, with a test sprite sheet that I've created (I made a 9x9 spritesheet, with each sprite of size 32x32 containing a unique solid color). What I want is to get the correct area of the tilesheet texture (as seen in the first test, that gets just the yellow pixels). My question is: Is there any way that I can fix this, WITHOUT adding tile spacing or any other modification involving the tilesheet? Maybe disabling a texture filtering that is done by XNA, or something like that.

• Best way to update UI when dealing with data synchronization

  I'm working on a bug at work. The app is written in Objective-C for iOS based device, for the iPad. I'm the new guy there and I've been given a hard task. Sometimes, the UIButton text property does not show the correct state when syncing. Basically, when the app is syncing, my UI control would say "Syncing" and when its not syncing it'll display "Updated @ [specific date]". Right now there is a property on the app delegate called "SyncInProgress". When querying / syncing, occurring on background thread, it updates a counter. The property will return a bool checking expression 'counter 0'. There are three states I need to deal with. Sync has started. Sync is updating tables. Sync finished. These items need to occur in order. My coworker suggested to take a state based approach instead of just responding to events. I'm not sure about how to go about that. Would it be best to have the UI receive a notification to determine what state its in or to pull every so often if state changed? • Why do my websites have a first page rank on Bing and Yahoo but not Google? [closed]

  I have 3 websites suffering from a drop in ranking with Google and hence a huge drop in traffic. The instant drop ocurred in September and I have not been able to remedy it. For the past 6-10 years my main website http://LearnToSail.Net has ranked from #3 to #1 on the 1st page of Google and all the other engines with the search term "learn to sail" Now it shows on the 1st page of Bing and Yahoo but does not show up on ANY pages of Google. The only way it does come up is if I add "cd" to the "learn to sail" phrase. We sell a sailing cd on that website. The other websites are http://LearnToSailOnLine.com ..search terms are "learn to sail online" or learntosailonline and historyofthepilgrims.com search terms are "history of the pilgrims" "historyofthepilgrims" I get the same result. Gone on Google but 1st pages for Bing and Yahoo. I have researched, edited,updated blogs, made sitemaps, prayed to the universe and use Google Webmaster tools but nothing is changing and I have lost alot of business. I host with 1and1.com and have been back and forth with them but to no avail and no change in traffic. I thought maybe some DNS mapping was off. I used to have alot of traffic now I have hardly any. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am still in the process of working on the issue of course! This is a really great website here and I am glad I came across it.
