• .NET vs Windows 8: Rematch!

  So, although you will be able to use your existing .NET skills to develop Metro apps, it turns out Microsoft are limiting Visual Studio 2011 Express to Metro-only. From the Express website: Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 provides tools for Metro style app development. To create desktop apps, you need to use Visual Studio 11 Professional, or higher. Oh dear. To develop any sort of non-Metro application, you will need to pay for at least VS Professional. I suspect Microsoft (or at least, certain groups within Microsoft) have a very explicit strategy in mind. By making VS Express Metro-only, developers who don't want to pay for Professional will be forced to make their simple one-shot or open-source application in Metro. This increases the number of applications available for Windows 8 and Windows mobile devices, which in turn make those platforms more attractive for consumers. When you use the free VS 11 Express, instead of paying Microsoft, you provide them a service by making applications for Metro, which in turn makes Microsoft's mobile offering more attractive to consumers, increasing their market share. Of course, it remains to be seen if developers forced to jump onto the Metro bandwagon will simply jump ship to Android or iOS instead. At least, that's what I think is going on. With Microsoft, who really knows?

• An unexpected pleasure from Windows 8

  This post is certainly on the more nuanced side of all the goodness that is Windows 8, but it’s about something that’s really changed my PC usage experience for the better. Besides being a geek and the enjoying all the techno-thrills and chills that go along with sitting in front of a keyboard all day, I really love the forest.  Trees have always been special to me.  The feeling of being in the forest with all the sounds and ambiance, the broken light, the fragrance of the air… it’s paradise to me. As I can’t get there often, due to work, and quite often the heat here in Texas, I’ve found something that can at least partially fill the gap…  When you install Windows 8, you’ll have an app called “Naturespace” from http://www.naturespace.com/ .  It boasts a number of predefined loops in what they call “holographic audio.”  They’re essentially high-tech 3D sound fields recorded in natural environments. After checking them out, I really liked the sound of the “Daybreak” selection: A great benefit is that you don’t have to be in Metro/Modern/Windows App Store mode, in order to keep the sound playing.  To start the day, I click on Daybreak, start it, then go back to the desktop and fire up VS, Chrome, etc. As I work and play, I’m surrounded by this delightful background ambiance which relaxes me and puts my mind at ease. Give it a try.  I think you’ll like it.  And no, you don’t need ear buds or headphones to get the benefit.

• Debugging Node.js applications for Windows Azure

  In case you are developing a new web application with Node.js for Windows Azure, you might notice there is no easy way to debug the application unless you are developing in an integrated IDE like Cloud9. For those that develop applications locally using a text editor (or WebMatrix) and Windows Azure Powershell for Node.js, it requires some steps not documented anywhere for the moment. I spent a few hours on this the other day I practically got nowhere until I received some help from Tomek and the rest of them. The IISNode version that currently ships with the Windows Azure for Node.js SDK does not support debugging by default, so you need to install the IISNode full version available in the github repository.  Once you have installed the full version, you need to enable debugging for the web application by modifying the web.config file <iisnode debuggingEnabled="true" loggingEnabled="true" devErrorsEnabled="true" /> The xml above needs to be inserted within the existing “<system.webServer/>” section. The last step is to open a WebKit browser (e.g. Chrome) and navigate to the URL where your application is hosted but adding the segment “/debug” to  the end. The full URL to the node.js application must be used, for example, http://localhost:81/myserver.js/debug That should open a new instance of Node inspector on the browser, so you can debug the application from there. • IdentityServer Beta 1 Refresh &amp; Windows Azure Support

  I just uploaded two new releases to Codeplex. IdentityServer B1 refresh A number of bug fixes and streamlined extensibility interfaces. Mostly a result of adding the Windows Azure support. Nothing has changed with regards to setup. Make sure you watch the intro video on the Codeplex site. IdentityServer B1 (Windows Azure Edition) I have now implemented all repositories for Windows Azure backed data storage. The default setup assumes you use the ASP.NET SQL membership provider database in SQL Azure and Table Storage for relying party, client certificates and delegation settings. The setup is simple: Upload your SSL/signing certificate via the portal Adjust the .cscfg file – you need to insert your storage account, certificate thumbprint and distinguished name There is a setup tool that can automatically insert the certificate distinguished names into your config file Adjust the connection string for the membership database in WebSite\configuration\connectionString.config Deploy Feedback Feature-wise this looks like the V1 release to me. It would be great if you could give me feedback, when you find a bug etc. – especially: Do the built-in repository implementations work for you (both on-premise and Azure)? Are the repository interfaces enough to add you own data store or feature?

• Ubuntu doesn't boot after adding a bootflag to the Windows partition

  I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on one (physical) hd and on the other one Windows. On both drives grub is installed to boot both operating systems. When I wanted to install SP1 for Win 7 I had to add a bootable flag to the partition from which Windows boots, otherwise the installation of SP1 does not work. I did so by booting into Ubuntu and using gparted to add this flag. After doing so the update for SP1 worked without any problems. When trying to boot back into Ubuntu grub complained that it couldn't find the kernel anymore! I tried to boot into a Ubuntu minimal cd and to restore grub using chroot, update-grub and grub-install which didn't work. I still had the problem that it was Unable to boot Ubuntu putting me in some minimal system called initramfs. It seems however that the uuid of the partitions changed. I guess this happened when I added the bootflag to the windows disk. Next thing I tried was to tell grub not to use the uuid for loading the kernel by uncommenting something in /etc/default/grub. Then I got the kernel booting but it suddenly stops (I guess when it is trying to mount the root file system) saying that the concerning uuid does not exist putting me into initramfs again. The strange thing is that there I coulnd't even manage to mount the root partition using /dev/sdb1 (on which it is in my case). I would be glad if there is a way to restore the system again without having to reinstall it.

  I have seen many Sharepoint Newbies cracking their head to create a Console/Windows  application in VS2010 and make it talk to Sharepoint 2010 Server. I had the same problem when i started with Sharepoint in the begining. It is important for you to acknowledge that SharePoint 2010 is based on .NET Framework version 3.5 and not version 4.0. In VS 2010 when you create a Console/Windows application, Make Sure you select .Net Framework 3.5 in the New Project Dialog Window.If you have missed while creating new Project Go to the Application tab of project properties and verify that .NET Framework Version 3.5 is select as the Target Framework. Now that you have selected the correct framework, will it work? Nope if the application is configured as x86 one it will not work. Sharepoint is a 64 Bit application and when you create a windows application to talk to Sharepoint it should also be a 64 Bit one. Go to Configuration Manager, Select x64. If x64 is not available select <New…> and in the New Solution Platform dialog box select x64 as the new platform copying settings from x86 and checking the Create new project platforms check box. This is not applicable if you are making a console application to talk to sharepoint with Client Object Model.

• Automated backups for Windows Azure SQL Database

  One of the questions that I've often been asked is about how you can backup databases in Windows Azure SQL Database. What we have had access to was the ability to export a database to a BACPAC. A BACPAC is basically just a zip file that contains a bunch of metadata along with a set of bcp files for each of the tables in the database. Each table in the database is exported one after the other, so this does not produce a transactionally-consistent backup at a specific point in time. To get a transactionally-consistent copy, you need a database that isn't in use.The easiest way to get a database that isn't in use is to use CREATE DATABASE AS COPY OF. This creates a new database as a transactionally-consistent copy of the database that you are copying. You can then use the export options to get a consistent BACPAC created.Previously, I've had to automate this process by myself. Given there was also no SQL Agent in Azure, I used a job in my on-premises SQL Server to do this, using a linked server configuration.Now there's a much simpler way. Windows Azure SQL Database now supports an automated export function. On the Configuration tab for the database, you need to enable the Automated Export function. You can configure how often the operation is performed for you, and which storage account will be used for the backups.It's important to consider the cost impacts of this as well. You are charged for how ever many databases are on your server on a given day. So if you enable a daily backup, you will double your database costs. Do not schedule the backups just before midnight UTC, as that could cause you to have three databases each day instead of one.This is a much needed addition to the capabilities. Scott Guthrie also posted about some other notable changes today, including a preview of a new premium offering for SQL Database. In addition to the Web and Business editions, there will now be a Premium edition that has reserved (rather than shared) resources. • alt+tab moves windows between workspaces and crashes unity

  I have recently been using multiple workspaces in unity but have run into a bug that is making it very difficult to do this effectively. The problem is with alt+tab. When I am focused on a window that is not in the primary (top-left) workspace one of two things happens: Unity restarts (the launcher and menu bar disappear and screen flashes blank before everything reappears) and all of my windows are moved to different workspaces. The focused window is always moved to the primary workspace and other windows are typically moved one workspace to the left. alt+tab will usually function normally after this. Unity completely crashes. The windows in the current workspace are still there, but the launcher and menu bar are gone, I cannot switch between workspaces, and none of the hotkeys work. The same issues occur when using alt+` as well. I have installed ccsm, but have made only minor adjustments with it. I am still using the Unity switcher. I actually uninstalled ccsm hoping that would resolve the issue, but the issue persists. Is there some resolution to this issue? I like Unity and want to keep using it, but having to use the mouse to switch between programs is irritating and enough reason to switch to Gnome.

• Cannot play windows WMA lossless files on Rhythmbox

  I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 with all its updates (without Windows) on it’s own drive and everything is working fine. I want to play WMA audio files, also mp3 files. The mp3 files play fine. The WMA files do not play. Used "Rhythmbox Music Player" with and without "Ubuntu-restricted" -extras. Still does not play the lossless windows audio files. I am frustrated with searching to play a WMA file ("download this converter"), but one cannot use this until one "deletes this". I have done everything but it still does not play my windows lossless files that I made from all my CD’s. I am looking for a music player that I can use to play mp3’s and WMA lossless music files and automatically put the album cover on and update the info if one exists. Installation should be as simple as possible. Right now I am back to the original virgin Ubuntu 10.10 with all the recent updates. This computer will do nothing but play music (mp3 and WMA) through a stereo system. I also use Internet to update album info for the music. I do not care what bells and whistles the music player program has, as long as it is an easy install and just plays my mp3 and wma lossless music files. Any help would be appreciated.

• Windows 8 App Downloads Increasing + Over 5,000 Apps Available

  Windows 8 will be unleashed on the general public tomorrow and I thought it would be a good time to review some of the numbers I have been tracking over the last month. Downloads of Windows 8 Apps have been steadily increasing over the last month.  Below is screenshot from the App Summary page for my Windows 8 app.  The blue line is my app, while the orange line is average for the top 5 apps in that subcategory.  Considering the large gap between the 2, I think it is safe to assume that my app is NOT in the top 5 in the subcategory. The spike in the last couple of days is fairly dramatic and I am a little surprised by that.  I would have expected that kind of spike on the days following the official release as opposed to the days leading up to the release.   Finally, the all important App count.  There have been some stories floating around that the Window 8 Store is a ghost town and that there are no apps available.  I think these might be exaggerating the situation a little.  As of this morning, in the US store there are over 5000 apps available for download.  Obviously a far cry from the hundreds of thousands available in other app stores, but we are seeing solid growth in this number. Less than a month ago, that number was 2000. That means the store more than doubled in less than a month. If the growth continues, it won’t be long before the Widows 8 Store is filled with all the apps you need (and a whole lot you don’t need).

• Grub does not show a Windows 8 option after dual boot

  So, I've successfully dual-booted my Windows 8 machine with Ubuntu 12.04 . However, I still don't have a convenient method of choosing what OS to load at boot time. After installing Ubuntu, my computer still loads Windows 8 directly. I then added grubx64.efi to the white list of my boot loader. But after that, my machine loads Ubuntu directly without even a shadow of GRUB showing up! I used boot-repair and I got this paste.ubuntu URL: paste.ubuntu.com/1326074. After running boot-repair (and re-white listing the grubx64.efi file), GRUB now shows up but without any Windows 8 option! Lastly, I ran sudo fdisk -l and it gave me this: WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. Disk /dev/sda: 750.2 GB, 750156374016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 91201 cylinders, total 1465149168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 4096 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes Disk identifier: 0x6396389f Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 1465149167 732574583+ ee GPT Partition 1 does not start on physical sector boundary. I'm guessing my problem has something to do with the warning from fdisk above but I don't know what to do with it. How do I proceed now?

• Ubuntu 13.04 under Parallels Desktop - Black Desktop after X Windows Update

  I have been running Ubuntu 13.04 successfully on a MacBook Pro in a virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 9. Today (2013-10-17) after applying today's Ubuntu update, which included updates to X Windows, my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine launches, the launcher comes up, but the screen background is solid black, rather than the shaded orange colour of the default desktop background (and my desktop icons are "hidden behind this blackness", as well). I can launch applications from the launcher, and there is a very brief white flash on the screen, and then it returns to black. It's as if there is a "black blanket" covering the entire screen, so there is no way to interact with any application windows using the keyboard or mouse. The icons of the launcher are responsive to the mouse, so I can right-click and quit any application I have launched. But the rest of the screen is non-responsive to keyboard or mouse. This same behaviour happens with two different versions of Parallels Tools, so I am quite sure this is not a Parallels problem per se, although I could believe that it could be a paroblem with the interface between Parallels and this new updated X Windows code. Could anyone tell me what has happened, and how I might be able to fix this problem, so I can continue to use my Ubuntu 13.04 virtual machine? (I do have the option of reverting to a previous version of my virtual machine from before this update, but if possible I would prefer to keep my version of Ubuntu 13.04 up to date with the latest updates.) • Use C2WTS to get a classic windows identity from a claims identity

A lot of backend systems still demand classic windows identities, but everything we do now has moved to claims. So sometimes (albeit rare), we have to translate a claims identity into a classic windows identity. This is where the “Claims to Windows Token Service” comes into play. SharePoint 2010 and 2013 make use of this but you can use this in any .NET application. First of all, there are some basic requirements for this to work, First, you will need the string value of a UPN claim. Just a string value, really! This means you can also use FBA or anything else. The “proper” way to do this of course is that you must originate this from a AD backed claim. So a user authenticated using ADFS or similar would be perfect. • Ubuntu sound volume is 40% lower than in Windows

  I have 2x 2.1 speakers connected to the computer where I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed. On the software side I've set all the volume controls to 100% with the alsamixer program. The speakers have their own volume control, maintaining those at the same level, and switching between Ubuntu and Windows (XP and 7), on windows the output volume is at least 40% higher, even when having the windows volume control at 50% (without touching the speakers volume control) it's still much higher than the sound on Ubuntu. Why can this be happening? Are there some alternative sound drivers (other than the default ones) I could test to see if it makes a difference? some info about the card: root:$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH HDA Intel PCH at 0xfbff4000 irq 55 1 [Generic ]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic HD-Audio Generic at 0xfbcfc000 irq 56 root:$ lspci | grep -i audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04) 02:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Cayman/Antilles HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 6900 Series] I think the one i am using is the Intel one, the other seems to be from the vga card which is an ati radeon 6950. Running gstreamer-properties and switching between alsa, oss, ossv4 and pulseaudio doesn't seem to make any difference.

• Changing the Default Windows Phone 7 Deployment Target In Visual Studio 2010

  After you download and install the January 2011 Windows Phone update, you will notice one annoying thing. The default deployment target for Windows Phone Projects in Visual Studio changes to Windows Phone 7 Device. Before the update, it defaulted to the Emulator. I found this extremely annoying as I’m more than likely going to test with the emulator before putting it on my actual device. Now to make things fair, Microsoft told you they were going to switch the default and even provided a solution, but you will have to check a tiny paragraph in the release notes. The good news is that its very easy to do: Simply navigate out to : %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Phone Tools\CoreCon See the folder named, “10.0”? Go ahead and delete it. Now, the folder will be completely empty and if you fire up Visual Studio 2010 you will see we are now defaulting to the Emulator again. In my opinion, this should have been left at Emulator. • Windows 8 and Cisco AnyConnect client issue

  As many of us are doing these days, I have fully moved to Windows 8 on my PCs (laptops and desktops).  And in my role as a consultant I work with many clients, many of them use different vpn technologies.  While pretty much every single vpn client I had installed needed a trick or two to work, well Cisco’s AnyConnect vpn client had some issues.  Installation went well, no problem there.  The problem appeared when I attempted to connect, as I received the following message: Pretty clear what the issue is, right? right??!!?? Doing a bit of research (Google knows!), I cam across the following fix: Using our new favorite shortcut:  Windows Key + X Then Run > regedit. We then Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\vpnva From the image you can tell there are additional characters in the DisplayName that interfere with the device being able to be correctly identified. This is what it looks like originally. We will remove those characters so it looks more like: Close all open windows and attempt your connection.

• Windows Azure AppFabric SDK - June CTP - Download issues

  Microsoft has announced availability of the June CTP for Windows Azure AppFabric. See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/appfabric/archive/2011/06/20/announcing-the-windows-azure-appfabric-june-ctp.aspx. This is an exciting release and provides greater insight into where the AppFabric team is heading in terms of developer and management tooling. Microsoft is offering space in the cloud to experiment with the CTP, but this is limited, so register early to get a namespace! You can download the SDK for the June CTP. However, we ran into a lot of trouble trying to do this today. Whenever we followed the link, we ended up on the page for the May CTP. We found what appeared to be a workaround which we were able to repeat on another box (and which I reported on Connect), but then a few minutes later I couldn't repeat it. Just now, the given link appears to be working every time in IE, but not in Firefox!   Frankly, the behaviour seems random!   It looks like the same URL points to two different pages, and I suspect that which page you end up on is hit and miss. The link to the download page is http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17691. If you end up on the wrong page, try again later and you may get to the right place. Or try googling "Windows Azure AppFabric SDK CTP – June Update" and following a link to this page. For some reason, that sometimes seems to work. • Unity in 12.10 comes up behind other windows

  I've just upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10. For the most part, everything works fine, but I have a few small problems with Unity, or maybe Compiz. When I hit the Super key, or click on the dash launcher, the dash sometimes comes up behind the other windows on the screen. As you can imagine, this makes it somewhat tricky to use. Once it has started coming up behind, no amount of trying again will convince it to come back to the front. Possibly related, the Alt-Tab switcher doesn't show either. It maybe that there isn't one, or maybe that's behind also? Alt-Tab does switch the windows, but there's no visual indicator. When I hit Super-W, the windows do all do the zoom thing, but it's slow and juddery where it used to be smooth in 12.04. I'm using the standard "radeon" driver, same as before, with a triple-head monitor setup (and that works fine). I've not tried the proprietary drivers as I've previously found the multi-monitor support much weaker than the default driver, but maybe that's the way to go now? Video play fine. Even WebGL seems ok. Do other see this problem? Is it a bug? Or have I just got some left-over config from 12.04 in the way?

• Using C++ but not using the language's specific features, should switch to C?

  I'm developing a NES emulator as a hobby, in my free time. I use C++ because is the language I use mostly, know mostly and like mostly. But now that I made some advance into the project I realize I'm not using almost any specific features of C++, and could have done it in plain C and getting the same result. I don't use templates, operator overloading, polymorphism, inheritance. So what would you say? should I stay in C++ or rewrite it in C? I won't do this to gain in performance, it could come as a side effect, but the idea is why should I use C++ if I don't need it? The only features of C++ I'm using is classes to encapsulate data and methods, but that can be done as well with structs and functions, I'm using new and delete, but could as well use malloc and free, and I'm using inheritance just for callbacks, which could be achieved with pointers to functions. Remember, it's a hobby project, I have no deadlines, so the overhead time and work that would require a re-write are not a problem, might be fun as well. So, the question is C or C++?

• Is The Ease Of Windows Phone Development Ruining Its Image

  I was reading an article on Mashable recently by a long time iPhone user who is living solely on a Lumia 920 at the moment and giving her assessment.  One thing that struck a nerve with me was her describing the Windows Phone ecosystem as immature.  She wasn’t saying this because of the number of apps or the big names like most people do.  She means the quality of the apps in the store. This hit a nerve with me.  I find it hard to believe that the majority of app on iOS are of any higher quality than any other platform.  I believe in any ecosystem you are going to find some high end, high quality apps, but the majority by default will be from people who are trying to solve a problem but do not have the resources to have top graphics and full blown testing.  There will also be a large number that are just there trying to trick you into giving up some cash. Does any of the mean that we shouldn’t take notice of this complaint?  Of course not!  We should always strive to publish the best quality apps possible.  Don’t do things like leaving default app icons and backgrounds.  Put a little effort into your design.  You should also spend as much time as possible ensuring against crashes and giving the user the best experience possible.  Think through your apps organization and navigation.  Go the extra step of putting it into beta and letting select people use it and give you feedback before going to full release. • Ubuntu 11.10 very slow compared to Windows

  I'm new to Ubuntu/linux. Since my PC is very old and not very fast with Windows 7, I decided to give Ubuntu a try, so I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.10 today. When I first started it, I had bad 800x600 resolution and it was very slow and annoying. So I installed a driver for my graphic card and now everything looks very nice (1280x1024).But I think it's still far slower than Windows 7. I tried to run in Ubuntu like a few people suggested on the forum but if I log in I get a black screen saying something like "this video mode cannot be displayed". I get that same screen when booting Ubuntu btw, but after about 15 seconds it disappears and just starts Ubuntu. I also installed other drivers for my graphic card but everything stayed the same. I noticed that i.e. when I open Firefox or system settings it takes about 5 seconds till it opens (while Windows 7 takes under 1 second to start i.e. Chrome) and when I do this my CPU usage gets to 100% for a short time. Computer specs: Memory: 2GB RAM Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 6800 400MHz. I read on various forums that 11.04 works flawless on many PCs, where 11.10 is very slow. Should I install 11.04 or could anybody help me with this problem?

• Ubuntu 12.04 gets overheated, whereas I have no heating problems on Windows 7 whatsoever

  I bought a new laptop which came pre-installed with Windows 7. I love working on Ubuntu and hence installed it. I can work on Windows for 6 hours at a stretch and feel the laptop being only slightly warm, but 15 minutes into running Ubuntu and my laptop is too hot. The battery also drains out very quickly on Ubuntu. 1.5 hrs of backup on Ubuntu compared to 5-6 hrs on Windows. I previously owned a Dell Inspiron N5010 and everything ran smoothly on that. No heating issues. It came with intel i3 processor. So I'm wondering whether this problem has something to do with the processor? (AMD A8) Specs: HP Pavilion G6-2005AX Laptop (APU Quad Core A8/ 4GB/ 500GB/ Win7 HB/ 1.5GB Graph) 1 GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M Dedicated 512 MB AMD Radeon HD 7640G Graphics Integrated Is there any fix for this problem? Thanks in advance. Edit: I've installed ATI proprietary drivers suggested by Ubuntu.
