• Norton Security Suite Symantec Download Manager Error: "Error writing to disk"

  My broadband provider (Comcast) decided to switch their 'included with service' security suite from McAfee to Norton Security Suite. Their email directed me to a site that downloaded the Symantec Download Manager (NortonDL.exe) and that went fine. I'm running Windows 7 32-bit and running this application pops up the standard User Account Control message and the software is correctly identified as coming from Symantec. I answer 'yes' to allow the software to install and upon launch immediately get an "Error writing to disk" error. I searched the Internet for this error, but mainly I find Comcast users complaining about the same issue with no resolution other than to call Symantec. I found no one suggesting a successful workaround and it appeared that most of the support calls took up to three hours. I'd like to avoid that if possible. Ideas? To be honest, I'm getting close to bagging this installation and just moving to Microsoft Security Essentials.

  Having trouble installing ghc6. Here's what seems to be the relevant error that comes up when I try to (apt-get|aptitude) install ghc6: A package failed to install. My searching around has not really helped me understand what's going on, except that it might be caused by a mismatch in locale.   I have many "side-projects" that were not part of my past jobs. Just for example: Configuring web site environment for professors and friends Configuring a Linux box that does the routing, firewall (iptables), backup and file sharing (samba) for my apartment Developing small websites for things as simple as party invites to polling friends. Running my own SMTP server with domain keys, SPF and DNSBL Etc., etc. What would be the appropriate section to mention this? Should I even mention it? Perhaps it's best to just bring it up during the interview. I would especially appreciate the opinion of hiring managers.

• What is the best way to configure Apache or AWS to support a Rails multi tenancy application that allows each customer to have their own domain name?

  I'm building a Rails 3 SaaS site that allows for multi-tenancy. When a customer signs up they put in their own domain name, e.g. example.com. I need example.com to point to my SaaS application and serve them their content. My questions are as follows: Do I need to create an Apache vhost for each customer using their own domain? Is there an easier way with CNAME's to just have the customer point to the IP address of my server(s) that then forwards the request onto my application through some catch all vhost? Would I be able to create the CNAME record for the customer so they don't have to do any setup? Would this be a case better suited to Amazon Web Services? Any help or explanation or corrections on my understanding of dns would be appreciated. I'm a developer so the server ops portion of this is a bit cloudy.

• Flash Player Automatic Updater on Windows Startup

  Hi all, Adobe Flash Player is set to automatically check for updates on Windows startup. I've always wondered where exactly it is set to do this. Checking the running services, as well as msconfig does not yield its location. The message in question looks like this: http://www.technipages.com/disable-an-update-to-your-adobe-flash-player-is-available-message-forever.html I know how to disable it via Adobe's web site (instructions are included in link above), but I'm interested in knowing where exactly in Windows is this set to perform this action? I have done some research on this, and people keep saying to check the following registry locations: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce or the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run However, I have checked those locations, and I still cannot locate where this updater is stored. I'm pretty sure that malware also uses this technique to automatically load upon startup, and since it's not in the typical location(s) that a user would look, it's well hidden. • Delete eth0 avahi from the ifconfig list

  Hello this is the response I get from ifconfig. Now I have two eth0 things being showed up. I need to delete the second one which says eth0:avahi. • Is Mac OS X open source?

  I learned recently (on superuser) that Mac OS X uses the bash shell. I also know that OS X has a UNIX core. I was searching for information about OS X and Open Source on google, but what I found was this site: http://www.opensource.apple.com/ Which seems to include the source code for OS X. For instance, one of the links reads: Mac OS X 10.5.7 Source So, is OS X open source? There's an Apple Public Source License, but I'm bad at understanding legalese. Update Extra/Bonus question: Besides the kernel, What about the various other pieces? The X server? Window Manager? File explorer? etc. What's open source and what's not?

• Where can you see the data that's been recorded by a tracking cookie?

  I've always read that cookies can, and do, store sensitive information such as OTHER websites that you've visited outside the one to which the cookie belongs. I've started to read up about it and can see that it's persistent cookies which typically do this - and well I've started to look through cookie files on my computer - but I can't see any telling info in them! Just a few jumbled lines and not the scary urls of other sites that I'm looking for. How do I view them? Or is the raw data of visited urls only ever stored on the server end of the site that's tracking me? I'm on Win7 and can look at cookies from FF 12, Chrome 18, IE9 and Safari 5.1. Thanks for illuminating this once and for all.

• How Do Nautilus Album Art Thumbnails work?

  There's something for which I've been searching an answer for a while now, but to no avail, and it's strange to me, as it seems like a thing that people would talk about: one of those nice little nonsense that enhance the computing experience a little bit. Anyway. I have a fair music collection. I save all the songs as ogg files. All is fine, and I can listen to the files, but there's something weird with the files in Nautilus: some have icons displaying their album art, while others don't, and I just can't understand WHY. I read on this site today that it's a matter of embedding the album art to the file, but that's not true, as I embedded the album art to the files I wanted several times, to no avail. Furthermore, removing an embedded album art from a file didn't have any effect on those that ARE displaying the icons. So my question is: How does it work? Where does Nautilus (or Ubuntu, I don't know) get the picture from? How do I edit it? Thanks in advance! -Amir

• Round robin DNS for dynamic website

  We want to setup multiple servers hosting the same site. Each server (iis6 or iis7) is on its own. Meaning it does not sjare any information with the others. They are not even in the same country. The problem we encounter is that if we setup a round-robin DNS (multiple IDs under one Domainname) is that the client (browser) switches the servers so that the asp.net session gets lost. The question is how do we set this up, so the clients are randomly send to one of the servers and if one fails the users go to the next one. But if a user is using one of the it should stay there. • Using Xbox 360 controller with Mac OS X (specifically turning it off)

  So I've been using this driver for a few months with the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller For Windows with my Mac Mini. Here's an article about the driver on Gizmodo. The driver works really well for actually using the controller, but there doesn't seem to be a way to power off the controller without pulling the batteries. Does anyone know of a replacement driver that includes power-off capabilities, or know of some other undocumented way to turn the controller off? Note: I've been having problems getting to the site, but it could be our corporate filtering.

• Deny Access to directories from unauthorized users

  I am not being paid for this and I would like to know the quickest way to do the following. A former client has a page which only members can access. This page links to a number of galleries which he only wants members to access. The galleries are not protected by any kind of authentication. What I assume is the quickest way to do this is to create a .htaccess file which only allow people to view the site when the come from a certain referrer. Would this work? My current thinking is that I could use a php script to deploy a .htaccess file into each of the gallery directories. (There are around a 100 at the moment.) I found this link which might be what I am after but to be honest I really don't get it. Is my thinking sound?

• mod_cache serving the wrong content

  I'm trying to use mod_disk_cache to speed up a web site that is running on WordPress. Whenever I enable it with CacheEnable disk / and the rest being the stock Ubuntu configuration I start to get the wrong results. When I see the main page it's fine, but when I go to a specific post I get a RSS feed instead. Like if the cache is returning the wrong content. I've disabled my RewriteRules as it seems mod_cache doesn't work with that. I'm not even sure where to start to debug such a thing. Any ideas?

• Arguments passed on by shell to command in Unix

  I've been going over this question and I can't for the life of me figure out why the answer is what it is. How many arguments are passed to the command by the shell on this command line:<pig pig -x " " -z -r" " >pig pig pig a. 8 b. 6 c. 5 d. 7 e. 9 The first symbol is supposed to be the symbol for redirected input but the site isn't letting me use it. [Fixed.] I looked at this question and said ok...arguments...not options so 2nd pig, then " ", then -r" ", 4th pig and 5th pig...-z and -x are options, so I count 5. The answer is b. 6. Where is the 6th argument that's being passed on?

• php file downloads instead of being processed with ajax on apache

  I have a small website where some content is displayed within a HTML tag using AJAX. The content is simply taken from another page on the same web site. However, sometimes instead of loading the parsed PHP file, the browser displays a download box instead. I downloaded the file and this is what it looks like a text file mixed with binary or gzipped data.   Background I have a broadband connection. The fiber optic cable running from outside to my building is connected to a converter unit. The output of the converter is connected to a router. The router also provides 8 LAN ports to which the computers are connected. Shortly speaking, all computers are interconnected in a workgroup as opposed to a domain. My computer hosts an IIS web server using a private or local domain name www.mydomain.local. I has added 127.0.0.1 www.mydomain.local to the hosts file in the server C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc so I can browse the site from within the server. So far so good. How to make other computers connected to my workgroup able to browse my web server via my private local domain www.mydomain.local? Note: Again, I am a newbie. I have no idea what I should do next.

  Hi, I'm new to this site but have found the articles and feedback very useful. We have a Server Room which our Organisation owns and controls, yet there are several thirs party companies that have open access to this room. As such, we have been asked to put together a protocol paper that stipulates the standards that we expect to be adhered to when working in this room. Other than the monitoring of UPS loads, Air Cooling functionality, alarm systems etc, does any one have any guidance on the kind of issues that need to be documented to make this protocol all encompassing? I'm thinking along the lines of not leaving cardboard or other combustibles in the room, not having food and drink in the room, not altering the fabric of the building by drilling through walls etc? • How to improve relationships between consultants and staff programmers

  I have been a consultant for a small software consulting firm for quite some time now. Our normal business model is not staff augmentation, but such that we find clients who need assistance in building a solution of some kind and then send in a team who can build that solution, work with the existing IT staff, train all involved on supportting that solution, then move on to the next job. We, of course, are still around for any needed ongoing support. We have a great reputation in our area and have been very successful in implementing the solutions that we provide. However, I have noticed a common theme for most of our projects. When we get on-site, there is generally a "stressed" relationship between our team and many of the IT staff currently at the client. I understand completely that there may be some anxiety about our arrival and that defenses can come up when we are around. Many of the folks are understanding and easy to work with, but there are usually some who will not work well with us at all, and who can quickly become a project risk in many ways. We try to go in with open minds and good attitudes, and try NOT to be arrogent or condecending. We generally get deployed when there is a mess to clean up - but we understand that there were reasons decisions were made that got them in the bind they are...so we just try to determine the next step forward and move on. My question is this - I'd like to hear from the IT staff and programmers out there who have had consultants in - what are the things that consultants do that fire up negative feelings and attitudes? What can we do better to make the relationship better, not only in the beginning, but as the project moves forward?
