• How do I change my gnome Ubuntu key-binding work as emacs?

  , Hello, everyone How can I change editing key-binding in Gnome on Ubuntu, and make it work like Emacs? Eg. When I'm chat with my friend, and I want to use Ctrl-a Ctrl-k to move my cursor go to the left of current line, and then cut current line, as OSX or Emacs. By default in Gnome Ubuntu, Ctrl-a is for "select all" and ctrl-k for nothing. Where does this key binding define? And how can I change this? I tried gnome-keybinding-properties and gsettings, find nothing. Maybe I have to compile something?

• Thomson TG585v7 router - promiscuous mode

  I have a TG585v7 as a router with several machines plugged into it. In the default setup, the packets are only delivered to the specific machine but I want to be able to setup to monitor all network traffic on one of the machines, i.e. I need those packets to be picked up when my ethernet card is in promiscuous mode. Is this possible? Guide here has this "mcastpromisc Make the IP interface multicast promiscuous. OPTIONAL", is this what I am looking for? Does it mean I need to manually add all my machines by their MAC addresses to be able to receive packets destined for them? Or am I out of luck and I need to get a better router?

• Mac OS X: All bootcamp options start Windows

  I just installed the latest security update on Mac OS X (installed on 2-10-2010). On restart my Mac booted in Windows 7, which I had installed previously and was set not to boot by default. I tried to restart holding the alt key, and selected the Mac OS X partition, but still the Windows 7 partition boots. It does not matter what partition I choose, Windows 7 always boots. I took a look in the OS X partition and noticed that the admin home folder is empty, or at least Windows is not showing any files there. There is another user on OS X and I can see their files no problem. This has me stumped, has anyone any suggestions for a finding a solution?

• Improve performance of bind9 service restart

  Hi, I'm setting up a name server hosting DNS for a large number of domains, 50,000 - 100,000 domains. I will be using Bind9 and the service will need to be restarted several times a day. I have made some tests and it seems that restart of the Bind9 service scales very poorly with the number of domains. #domains | restart time ----------------------- 10,000 | 3.1 sec 25,000 | 8.9 sec 50,000 | 50 sec 100,000 | 7:50 min Is there some way to speedup the restart of the service? I have noticed that restart only utilizes one core, is there some way for it to use more cores? The Bind9 version is 9.7.1-P2 with default configuration. The server running Bind9 is a Intel Core 2 Due 2.93 GHz with 4 GB memory and Ubuntu Server 10.10. Any help will be appreciated. Jakob

• How to get monitor resolution of 1680x1050 using ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO in a dual monitor setup

  I have Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO graphics card in my Windows Server 2008 x64 machine. It has two outputs a VGA and a DVI. I have connected the DVI to my Dell 24" monitor with 1900x1200 resolution and it works 100%. The VGA I have connected to my second monitor a Samsung 22" with native resolution of 1680x1050. But the ATI driver and Catalyst control centre doesn't show this resolution as an option. If I choose a lower resolution like 1280x1024 it looks really bad and fuzzy. I searched in google and downloaded the powerstrip tool that allowed me to create a custom resolution of 1680x1050 and then this option shows up in Catalyst control centre and my 2nd monitor works fine now. But I don't want to pay for an application to choose a display resolution. Why doesn't ATI show me that option by default even though it has no problem in actually supporting the display at resolution. Is there a way to get 1680x1050 resolution using ATI drivers only ?

• Swap, Swapiness and Standby: swapping starts when waking up

  I'm running running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Lenovo W500 (Core2Duo T9400, 4GB Ram) Current kernel: 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu SMP Wed Sep 26 21:33:09 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux -- but the problems exists since a couple of months, surviving quite a few software (includig kernel) updates I regularly put my machine into suspend-to-ram (S3) and when the machine comes back up Ubuntu starts to swap out processes. I was able to observe that the used swap-space starts to grow right after the box returns. See munin graphs below, the gap (obviously) shows the timeframe in STR. Needless to say that the box becomes unusable while swapping, load goes up beyond 10. What I've done so far: lowered swappiness from default (60) to 10 (via /etc/sysctl.conf: vm.swappiness=10) -- this has improved the situation much, but sometimes the problem comes back, I have not found a trigger (like memory usage) for this for now lowered swappiness to 5 -- perhaps this has brought an improvement again Before going to STR the box ran stable without (swapping) problems for hours. Today when the issue showed up again I used this script (- http://stackoverflow.com/questions/479953/how-to-find-out-which-processes-are-swapping-in-linux) to find what processes have the most used swap space. • NTFS partitions mount as root instead of user as set in /etc/fstab

  I recently upgraded a server to Ubuntu 12.04 with a fresh install and my NTFS partitions won't mount as user at boot but I can mount them as user manually from the console with $ sudo mount -a. Using ntfsfix reports no problems and chkdisk sees nothing wrong under Windows 7. Are the drives not ready to be mounted at boot and default to root instead of user for some reason? • What is the difference between Row Level Security and RPD security?

  Row level security (RLS) is a feature of Oracle Enterprise Edition database. RLS enforces security policies on the database level. This means any query executed against the database will respect the specific security applied through these policies. For P6 Reporting Database, these policies are applied during the ETL process. This gives database users the ability to access data with security enforcement even outside of the Oracle Business Intelligence application. RLS is a new feature of P6 Reporting Database starting in version 3.0. This allows for maximum security enforcement outside of the ETL and inside of Oracle Business Intelligence (Analysis and Dashboards). Policies are defined against the STAR tables based on Primavera Project and Resource security. RLS is the security method of Oracle Enterprise Edition customers. See previous blogs and P6 Reporting Database Installation and Configuration guide for more on security specifics. To allow the use of Oracle Standard Edition database for those with a small database (as defined in the P6 Reporting Database Sizing and Planning guide) an RPD with non-RLS is also available. RPD security is enforced by adding specific criteria to the physical and business layers of the RPD for those tables that contain projects and resources, and those fields that are cost fields vs. non cost fields. With the RPD security method Oracle Business Intelligence enforces security. RLS security is the default security method. Additional steps are required at installation and ETL run time for those Oracle Standard Edition customers who use RPD security. The RPD method of security enforcement existed from P6 Reporting Database 2.0/P6 Analytics 1.0 up until RLS became available in P6 Reporting Database 3.0\P6 Analytics 2.0.

• Where can I download copies of a Windows XP ISO image with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7 for VirtualBox?

  I have Windows 7 Professional hosting Ubuntu inside VirtualBox for my development machine. To test my site, I run Internet Explorer and hit my Ubuntu box. This works great for Internet Explorer 8, the default browser on this Windows machine. I also want to run another VM with a copy of Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 or Internet Explorer 7. Where can I download ISO image files of old copies of Windows XP? I've looked in Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image and these only run in Virtual PC/XP Mode which won't run while VirtualBox is running. If I have to run VirtualBox (can't work without Ubuntu running the site), is there any way to test Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, and Internet Explorer 8 from the same Windows 7 machine?

• Why would Copying a Large Image to the Clipboard Freeze a Computer?

  Sometimes, something really odd happens when using our computers that makes no sense at all…such as copying a simple image to the clipboard and the computer freezing up because of it. An image is an image, right? Today’s SuperUser post has the answer to a puzzled reader’s dilemna. Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. Original image courtesy of Wikimedia. The Question SuperUser reader Joban Dhillon wants to know why copying an image to the clipboard on his computer freezes it up: I was messing around with some height map images and found this one: (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/15/Srtm_ramp2.world.21600×10800.jpg) The image is 21,600*10,800 pixels in size. When I right click and select “Copy Image” in my browser (I am using Google Chrome), it slows down my computer until it freezes. After that I must restart. I am curious about why this happens. I presume it is the size of the image, although it is only about 6 MB when saved to my computer. I am also using Windows 8.1 Why would a simple image freeze Joban’s computer up after copying it to the clipboard? The Answer SuperUser contributor Mokubai has the answer for us: “Copy Image” is copying the raw image data, rather than the image file itself, to your clipboard. The raw image data will be 21,600 x 10,800 x 3 (24 bit image) = 699,840,000 bytes of data. That is approximately 700 MB of data your browser is trying to copy to the clipboard. JPEG compresses the raw data using a lossy algorithm and can get pretty good compression. Hence the compressed file is only 6 MB. The reason it makes your computer slow is that it is probably filling your memory up with at least the 700 MB of image data that your browser is using to show you the image, another 700 MB (along with whatever overhead the clipboard incurs) to store it on the clipboard, and a not insignificant amount of processing power to convert the image into a format that can be stored on the clipboard. Chances are that if you have less than 4 GB of physical RAM, then those copies of the image data are forcing your computer to page memory out to the swap file in an attempt to fulfil both memory demands at the same time. This will cause programs and disk access to be sluggish as they use the disk and try to use the data that may have just been paged out. In short: Do not use the clipboard for huge images unless you have a lot of memory and a bit of time to spare. Like pretty graphs? This is what happens when I load that image in Google Chrome, then copy it to the clipboard on my machine with 12 GB of RAM: It starts off at the lower point using 2.8 GB of RAM, loading the image punches it up to 3.6 GB (approximately the 700 MB), then copying it to the clipboard spikes way up there at 6.3 GB of RAM before settling back down at the 4.5-ish you would expect to see for a program and two copies of a rather large image. That is a whopping 3.7 GB of image data being worked on at the peak, which is probably the initial image, a reserved quantity for the clipboard, and perhaps a couple of conversion buffers. That is enough to bring any machine with less than 8 GB of RAM to its knees. Strangely, doing the same thing in Firefox just copies the image file rather than the image data (without the scary memory surge). Have something to add to the explanation? Sound off in the comments. • esxi change MKS port

  I need to connect to my home esxi box over the web however I cannot use the default port 902 for the console viewer due to firewall restrictions. Is there a way to change this port somewhere even if i can just do some nat and redirect any other port to that port? I've had a look around and when I try to connect to the esxi server in vSphere client I cant find anywhere I can specify the port. I know this is not the recommended way to do this but its a testing server and security is not an absolute must on this box. I also cannot setup a vpn to this box.

• DHCPD Offering ip address on wrong subnet

  I just recently added a new subnet for our wireless network to our DHCP configuration for the 192.168.254.0 subnet. Most of the time when wireless clients connect it works just fine. However, sometimes on seemingly random occasions the DHCP server will send out a DHCPOFFER with an IP address on the wrong subnet. Example: dhcpd: DHCPDISCOVER from MACADDRESS (ThinkBook2) via 192.168.254.1 dhcpd: DHCPOFFER on 192.168.22.236 to MACADDRESS (ThinkBook2) via 192.168.254.1 Here is the subnet configuration in dhcpd.conf: subnet 192.168.254.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { option routers 192.168.254.1; range 192.168.254.34 192.168.254.254; default-lease-time 14400; authoritative; } How can I make sure the server always sends out an IP address on the right subnet?

• How to send a popup message to unknow computer connected to my WLAN?

  Is there any way to send a popup message from a Linux systen to a "random" laptop/tablet/mobile linked to my Wireless network ? For example, if I let my WLAN open and I see a not recognized computer connected to it, is there anyway to send to that device a message ? On the other hand, if I am connected to someone else open network and they may or may not be aware that their network is open, can I send them a message warning that I am accessing their network? Probably for a completely "random" device the answer should be no. But if we restrict to laptops with Win7 or Linux SO is there any service running by default on such systems that allows one to send such popup messages ? PS: I have no practical motivation for this question. This is only a curiosity.

• Utilize different region format for a single application on Mac OS X

  Is there a way to have a single Mac OS X application utilize a different region format than the system default? For example, I'd like to keep my system operating in English with US date formats but have my lesson planning software utilize French date formats. If I put my entire computer into French mode, I get the desired results, but I'd rather keep my entire system in US mode and have the Planbook application work with French region formats. I know about Language Switcher but that only allow per-app selections of localizations to be used, not which date format to use. I don't care about having the French localization of Planbook appear, I just want the date format to be French.

• How to set up a (relatively) secure kiosk on Natty?

  I'm trying to get my application to be the only thing a user sees when the machine is powered on - like a kiosk, but a little more secure. Ideally, what I'd like to happen is this: At machine power-on, the user sees the Ubuntu splash image, then my app. While the app is running, the user can't get back to the desktop or a text login prompt via any keyboard shortcut. This is the (relatively) secure bit. When the user exits the app, the user sees a shutdown image, then the machine powers off. In particular, I'd like to configure things so that the user never sees the Gnome desktop on startup or shutdown. At the moment, I've configured a default user to be logged on automatically, with an autostart item which starts my app, but after the Ubuntu startup screen the user sees the Gnome desktop briefly before my app is started. When the app is exited, the user is taken back to the Gnome desktop and has to shut the machine down manually. Also, because of time constraints, I can't really start over with a different window manager. Is there an easy way to configure all of this?

• Recommended boot partition size for Windows 7

  I started using One Big Partition for everything and separating data out with folders when I got my current computer years ago. I'm preparing to upgrade my system from Windows XP to Windows 7 and I thought I might go back to putting my data on a separate partition. Most likely I'll just use the default OS install. My current Program Files tree has ~16 GB of stuff. Thinking ahead though, I've had XP installed for years. Who knows what apps I'm going to install down the line? This, of course, begs the question: How big do I make my Windows 7 install partition?

• Diferent keyboard layouts at same time for diferent devices

  Hello, I have a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard, and I am using it was a portable but also desktop computer. In order to acheive this, i bought a VGA adapter and I am using it with an external mouse+keyboard+monitor. The problem is, the external keyboard layout is diferent from the one on the macbook. It is set to US qwerty (its a logitech G15), and because of that, most keys behave diferently from what they are supposed to. Question is, how can I set up diferent layouts at same time for diferent devices? I want US for external keyboard and PT for the default one.

• PostgreSQL didn't install on Ubuntu 11.04

  On a new copy of Ubuntu 11.04 server I am trying to install PostgreSQL server by apt-get install postgresql. But in the end of installation log I saw: Error: could not create default cluster. Please create it manually with pg_createcluster 8.4 main --start When I ran this command I saw this message: perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = "en_US:en", LC_ALL = (unset), LC_CTYPE = "UTF-8", LANG = "en_US.UTF-8" are supported and installed on your system. perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale ("C"). Error: The locale requested by the environment is invalid. And no PostgreSQL server started :( What I need to do to become happy on this?

  Hi everyone, I have a dual boot system with Windows XP Pro and Windows 7. • Linux and ClickPads

  I just got my Arch / Windows 7 dual-boot setup running... except for one thing. I have an HP dv6-3127dx laptop, which is an issue when it comes to Linux because it does not have a traditional touchpad, but a "ClickPad." This means where the left and right buttons exist, it is also sensitive to moving the pointer. The issue comes in when I try to steady the mouse with one finger, while clicking the left click with another, because the mouse freaks out. It's also an issue because it's not recognizing the right click whatsoever. I am currently using the default Synaptics drivers downloaded from pacman on Arch Linux, running Linux v2.6.36. EDIT: The question of course is, how can I fix this?
