• Is it better to use GL_FIXED or GL_FLOAT on Android.

  I would have assumed that GL_FIXED was faster, but the iPhone docs actually say to use GL_FLOAT because GL_FIXED has to be converted to GL_FLOAT. Is it the same on Android? I suppose it varies by phone, but what about recent popular ones (Nexus One, Droid/Milestone, etc.)? Bonus points: This appears to be completely undocumented (e.g. search google for GL_FIXED!) but where is the 'point' in GL_FIXED? I.e. how much is (GL_FIXED)1 worth?

  I am creating an iPad application and in it I would like to let the user select an image from their photolibrary using the image picker, then I would like to put that image into a template,kinda like a picture on a card then I would like the user to be able to edit the text on the card then saving it into the saved photos album on the ipad. How would I go about doing this in code. I am new to iphone/ipad development but this isthe only thing so far I'm having problems with.   I use this little snippet to halt my iPhone app in the simulator. NSAssert((0), @"Bail early while testing"); When I try to make it a #defined macro like this: #define BAILNOW (NSAssert((0), @"Bail early while testing")) I get this build error: error: expected expression before 'do' It seems to be related to the nesting of the NSAssert() macro but I'm at a loss as to how to get around it. Should I dig into the NSAssertionHandler docs or is there some simpler way to halt the app in it's tracks? Or should I just set a breakpoint and get on with my life?

• How to duplicate INSERTS into a seperate table?

  An iPhone application I have installed uses an SQLite database to log entries with basic INSERTS and DELETES being performed on it. However I wish to keep a permanent log of the INSERTS made to this table, so when an INSERT occurs, I want it to be written to another table also as to create a log. I don't have access to the application source code in order to modify the SQL statements made, I do have access to the SQLite database. Can I do this with triggers? If so can somebody provide a short example.

• Local Live Quicktime Video Broadcast, latency?

  I'm looking into the feasibility of using a local server to distribute live video of a conference to delegates in the same room. They would still hear the live audio coming from the speaker, so only the video would be streamed. I was considering a Darwin Steaming Server (a lot of iPhone users to support) and encoding with H.264. My main concern is latency across the network. Even with everything running locally, would there be lip sync issues between the live audio and the 'live' video stream? It feels like there will be problems given the encoding, broadcasting, decoding to be completed, but I've never done any like this before so thought I would check. Thanks

• Creating an n tiered application

  I am researching architecture for a project that will be started next year. It is mainly a c# web app, but there will be a service layer so that it can talk to our facebook/iphone app. There are a few long running processes, which means that I will be creating a windows process that can handle those. I’m thinking of putting the entire app in the windows service instead of just the long running processes. Asp - wcf - bll Vs Asp - bll I know this will be more scalable. But it is probably overkill as everything will be running on the same box, even the database. This could change down the road if the server can’t handle the traffic like marketing says it will. I don’t have access to production hardware, just my crappy testing box and my local machine. Has anyone decided to go down this route? But mostly, what is the best way to test both methods to get some metrics?

  I am struggling a little with folder organization to organize the many projects that I work on. I work on OS X - right now I am using ~/Development/ as the root folder, and I have many types of projects. For example, I have my iPhone apps under ~/Development/Xcode I develop in many languages, from PHP, to Ruby, to Python, to Objective-C. So, for example, I might have a couple of open-source apps based on PHP where I am using the Zend framework. Some of these projects are for clients, others are tests/experiments when learning a new language or general experimenting. I am really interested in how other developers have organized code/projects and could pass along some advice to make it very easy to navigate through code/projects related to many languages and types of projects.

I have currently got the JavaScript/HTML5 Geolocation picking up my current location and showing me it on a Google Map using Lat & Long values. • How to split page and reveal stuff underneath?

• Is there an easy way to do click-and-drag scrolling in text frames?

  I have a div with overflow:auto and a scroll bar, and I'd like to be able to drag the contents to scroll. I don't need to be able to select text. Is there an easy way to do this? A jQuery plugin would be good, otherwise plain old JavaScript would be fine. It seems I haven't made myself clear enough. There's a div with a fixed height that I want to scroll. Instead of picking up the scroll bar, I want to click and drag inside the text in the opposite direction. Like on an iPhone. • Crowdsourcing translation for mobile developers?

  I am developing applications for mobile phones with different operating systems (Android, Symbian, iPhone). Applications are sold internationally so they need to be translated to different languages in addition to english version. I assume most mobile developers do the translations using some paid external service each time. This approach does not look very cost-effective to me. Would it make sense to have a website where simple translations would be done using crowdsourcing (other developers)? Most strings in mobile applications are very simple and short, for example "OK, "Cancel", "Are you sure?", "Please enter your password". Also the same strings are used in hundreds of applications. Instead of paying for translating all strings, developers could save money by only buying their difficult application specific translations. Does anyone agree with this idea? I have seen many opensource projects doing the translations succesfully using volunteers.

• Delegates vs. events in Cocoa

  I'm writing my first iPhone app, and I've been exploring the design patterns in Cocoa and Objective-C. I come from a background of client-side web development, so I'm trying to wrap my head around delegates. Specifically, I don't see why delegate objects are needed instead of event handlers. For instance, when the user presses a button, it is handled with an event (UITouchUpInside), but when the user finishes inputting to a text box and closes it with the 'Done' button, the action is handled by calling a method on the text box's delegate (textFieldShouldReturn). Why use a delegate method instead of an event? I also notice this in the view controller with the viewDidLoad method. Why not just use events?

  Hello, I am writting program for my iphone and have a qestion. lets say i have class named my_obj class my_obj { NSString *name; NSinteger *id; NSinteger *foo; NSString *boo; } now i allocate 100 objects from type my_obj and insert them to array from type NSArray. then i want to sort the Array in two different ways. one by the name and the second by the id. i want to allocate another two arrays from type NSArray *arraySortByName *arraySortById what i need to do if i just want the sorted arrays to be referenced to the original array so i will get two sorted arrays that point to the original array (that didnt changed!) i other word i dont want to allocate another 100 objects to each sorted array.

• How to check using a script if project is opened in XCode?

  Hi, I'd like to introduce build number feature for my iPhone project and increase it automatically with every commit to my git repo. I plan to do it using Apple's agvtool, which recommends that project is not opened in XCode at the time So my questions are: 1) So far I know that I need to make an executable script from .git/hooks/pre-commit.sample. How to do the scripting to check if certain project is opened in XCode? 2) pre-commit.sh will be executed upon calling git commit with no args, so whenever someone will commit with -a option, I won't have my build number updated. • Tutorials for an experienced C# user to learn C++

  Are there any good resources for learning C++ that a C# user could use, which don't require knowledge of C? I have quite a good knowledge of C# via courses in my University's game development program (in a 300 level course right now) but now I need to use C++ for a project. I would use a beginner tutorial but they are so hard for me to follow and learn the basic syntax because they start so slowly. I found a few of tutorials for switching from C++ to C#, but none in the other direction. I do have a little bit of Objective C practice from iPhone programming as well.

• Restoring a saved opengl ES buffer (i.e. writing it back to screen)

  I'm writing an iPhone app where I need to save and load the screen contents. I was able to save the screen using glReadPixels(), but since there's no glDrawPixels() in openGL ES, I'm having a lot of trouble restoring that buffer to the screen. Does anyone have or know of any code samples that do this? I'm an openGL noob, so any help would be greatly appreciated :)
