• Is it unprofessional to leave game resources to the open eye?

  I'm still having problems packing my resources, after going through complicated APIs and basically just zip files which are exhausting my brain, I thought I could also pack the game with the resources visible to the human eye, in a simple folder. Would that be unprofessional? Personally, I've never even seen games do that, it would basically mean that the player could just edit whatever he wants in the game, like go in map1.txt and add an X somewhere to create a wall, or change the player sprite to a pony in MS PAINT.

  I am working on a simple Wordpress blog where when an article is published, it appears on ALL these pages: Homepage - Headline(clickable) + 3-line summary Parent category page - Headline(clickable) + 3-line summary Child category page - Headline(clickable) + 3-line summary Author page - Headline(clickable) sitemap.xml I've been told that I should add all author pages to my robots.txt, under disallow, so as search engine bots do not spider /author/* since all links on these pages are available elsewhere. Is this a good approach or maybe rel=nofollow is better, or maybe I shouldn't worry about this at all?

• Play Framework Plugin for NetBeans IDE (Part 2)

  After I published part 1 of this series, the first external contribution (i.e., not by me) to the NetBeans plugin for Play Framework 2 was committed today. Yann D'Isanto added support for creating new Play projects: That completely solves a problem I was working on, in a different way altogether. I was working on creating a new wizard that would call "play new" on the command line and pass into the command line the entered name and application type (1 for Java and 2 for Scala). However, Yann's solution is better, at least in the sense in that it works, as opposed to mine which didn't, because of problems I continually had with the command line, since one needs to press Enter multiple times on the Play command line when creating new projects, which I wasn't able to simulate in my new wizard. Yann's approach is simply to follow the approach taken in the Project Type Module Tutorial, which explains how to register a project sample in the IDE. I was inspired by Yann's contribution, especially when he mentioned that one needs to build Play projects on the command line. So, I added a new menu item on the right-click of a project for building Play projects, which simply passes "play compile" to the command line for the current project: Via the IDE's main menu bar, you can also Build and Run the application, though the code for the Clean function needs to be added still, which would be a cool thing for anyone out there to add, by using all the existing code and then passing "play clean compile" to the command line. Something else that Yann added is an Options Window extension, thanks to the Options Window Module Tutorial, for registering the Play installation, which is a step forward from my hard coded solution. I changed things slightly so that, when Build or Run are selected, without a Play installation being defined, the Options window opens, displaying the tab that Yann created, shown below. Notice that there's no Browse button, which would be a simple next step for anyone else to contribute. A small tip is to use the FileChooserBuilder from the NetBeans IDE APIs when working on the Browse button: Looking forward to more contributions to the Play Framework 2 plugin for NetBeans IDE. • NVIDIA Additional Drivers Empty - maximum resolution 640x480 - Driver disappears

I know, I know yet another NVIDIA question. So I did all the research. I uninstalled and installed nvidia-settings and drivers and nvidia-current from PPE repositories which are the most updated ones. I executed nvidia-xconfig. I have two major problems. One: Additional Drivers setting is empty! It doesn't contain any driver although one is installed. I have executed apt-get update too. But still the list is empty. Two: If I execute nvidia-xconfig it will properly configure an xorg.conf file. I restart but the maximum resolution I got is 640x480. I tried the xrandr but I can't add any resolution to display LVDS1. Some weird error occurs. So I can't add a proprietary driver and I can't boot in with the xorg file created by Nvidia... What can I do? With some work ( unistall nvidia-current and install libgl1-mesa-glx I was able to activate some kind of usage of my card because the resolution got better... and I added bumbelbee to because I have multiple video cards... ) but still the list is empty. I don't know what to do at this point??!!! Also: this is the most important part. When I first installed my ubuntu yesterday 11.10 one I saw the driver!! The driver was there... And then I ofc updated every package from internet.. And after that it was gone. And I can't bring it back. So there must be something wrong with one of the updates. But which???? Thanks for any extra info you can provide! I'm really desperate to solve this issue.

• Problem with nvidia drivers instalation

  I want to install new nvidia drivers R310 so I downloaded driver and when I run it it says that i can't install new drivers because there is this nouveau driver. It asked me if I want to add blacklist file with nouveau in modprobe so I said yes please. After reboot same thing, I searched through endless topics/questions/etc, i ran sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and tried other things and still didn't find solution how to install new drivers.

  I have several situations where I need to control timeouts in a technical application. Either in a loop or as a simple check. Of course – handling this is really easy, but none of these is looking cute. To clarify, here is some C# (Pseudo) code: private DateTime girlWentIntoBathroom; girlWentIntoBathroom = DateTime.Now; do { // do something } while (girlWentIntoBathroom.AddSeconds(10) > DateTime.Now); or if (girlWentIntoBathroom.AddSeconds(10) > DateTime.Now) MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); else MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); Now I was inspired by something a saw in Ruby on StackOverflow: Now I’m wondering if this construct can be made more readable using extension methods. My goal is something that can be read like “If girlWentIntoBathroom is more than 10 seconds ago” 1st attempt if (girlWentIntoBathroom > (10).Seconds().Ago()) MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); else MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); So I wrote an extension for integer that converts the integer into a TimeSpan public static TimeSpan Seconds(this int amount) { return new TimeSpan(0, 0, amount); } After that, I wrote an extension for TimeSpan like this: public static DateTime Ago(this TimeSpan diff) { return DateTime.Now.Add(-diff); } This works fine so far, but has a great disadvantage. The logic is inverted! Since girlWentIntoBathroom is a timestamp in the past, the right side of the equation needs to count backwards: impossible. Just inverting the equation is no solution, because it will invert the read sentence as well. 2nd attempt So I tried something new: if (girlWentIntoBathroom.IsMoreThan(10).SecondsAgo()) MessageBox.Show("Knock louder"); else MessageBox.Show("Wait a little longer"); IsMoreThan() needs to transport the past timestamp as well as the span for the extension SecondsAgo(). It could be: public static DateWithIntegerSpan IsMoreThan(this DateTime baseTime, int span) { return new DateWithIntegerSpan() { Date = baseTime, Span = span }; } Where DateWithIntegerSpan is simply: public class DateWithIntegerSpan { public DateTime Date {get; set;} public int Span { get; set; } } And SecondsAgo() is public static bool SecondsAgo(this DateWithIntegerSpan dateAndSpan) { return dateAndSpan.Date.Add(new TimeSpan(0, 0, dateAndSpan.Span)) < DateTime.Now; } Using this approach, the English sentence matches the expected behavior. But the disadvantage is, that I need a helping class (DateWithIntegerSpan). Has anyone an idea to make checking timeouts look more cute and closer to a readable sentence? Am I a little too insane thinking about something minor like this?

• 12.04 display resolution changes after each reboot

  I am running 12.04-64bit on a Dell xps15z and the resolution changes after each reboot to 1024x768 .As a result my desktop occupies just 3/4 of my entire screen...I have to manually adjust it through the display option to the max 1366x768 in order for the desktop to occupy the whole display!If you add this to the "system problem detected" that pops up every day I cannot hide my dissatisfaction and frustration about 12.04...

  I am aware that in Unity we can add world time by clicking on time bar. However, it's still a list of locations and sometimes it may be hard to quickly find the timezone of interest. Is there any tool which can put a multiple clock instances on the desktop representing each timezone of interest? Similar to the clock in Windows 7. To be more clear, I am not looking for a weather widget, but a simple clock widget so that I can track time in different timezones.

• How can I stop my Jitter physics meshes being offset?

  I'm developing a C# game engine and have hit a snag trying to add physics. I'm using XNA for graphics and Jitter for physics. I am trying to split the XNA model into it's meshes, then create a ConvexHull for each mesh. I then attempt to combine those into a CompoundObject, this however isn't working and depending upon the model the meshes are offset by different amounts.   Prologue Following EF series (I ,II y III) in this chapter we will see how to create DB record from EF. Inserting Data Like we indicated in the 2º post: “One Entity matches with a DB record, and one property match with a Table Column”. To start, we need to create an object from one of the Entities: 1: EMPLEADOS empleado = new EMPLEADOS(); Also like, I told previously, Exists the possibility to use the Static Function defined by VS for each Entity: Once we have created the object, we can Access to it properties to fill like a common class:   1: empleado.NOMBRE = "Javier Torrecilla";   After finish of fill our Entity properties, it must be needed to add the object to the appropriate ObjectSet in the ObjectContext: 1: enti.EMPLEADOS.AddObject(empleado); or 1: enti.AddToEMPLEADOS(empleado); Both methods will do the same action, create an insert statement. Have we finished? No. Any Entity has a property called “EntityState”. This prop is an Enum from “EntityState”, which has the following: Detached: the Entity is created, but not added to the Context. Unchanged: There is no pending changes in the Entity. Added: The entity is added to the ObjectSet, but it is not yet sent to the DB. It will add, modify or delete all Entities, whose EntityState property, is setted to Added, Deleted or Modified. After finishing, all added or modified entities will be change the State to “Unchanged”, and deleted Entities must take the “Detached” state.

  I'm looking to add circle-polygon collisions to my Separating Axis Theorem collision detection. The metanet software tutorial (http://www.metanetsoftware.com/technique/tutorialA.html#section3) on SAT, which I discovered in the answer to a question I found when searching, talks about voronoi regions. I'm having trouble finding material on how I would calculate these regions for an arbitrary convex polygon and aleo how I would determine if a point is in one + which. The tutorial does contain source code but it's a .fla and I don't have Flash unfortunately.
