  Is there a way to prevent an annotation in a MKMapView instance from being enabled. In other words, when the user taps the red pin on the map, is there a way to prevent it from highlighting the pin. Right now the pin turns dark when touched... • Is there a way to split the results of a select query into two equal halfs?

  I'd like to have a query returning two ResultSets each of which holding exactly half of all records matching a certain criteria. I tried using TOP 50 PERCENT in conjunction with an Order By but if the number of records in the table is odd, one record will show up in both resultsets. Example: I've got a simple table with TheID (PK) and TheValue fields (varchar(10)) and 5 records. Skip the where clause for now. SELECT TOP 50 PERCENT * FROM TheTable ORDER BY TheID asc results in the selected id's 1,2,3 SELECT TOP 50 PERCENT * FROM TheTable ORDER BY TheID desc results in the selected id's 3,4,5 3 is a dup. In real life of course the queries are fairly complicated with a ton of where clauses and subqueries.

• Android - dialer icon gets placed in recently used apps after finish()

  In my application I detect the out going call when a call is dialled from the dialer or contacts. This works fine and I then pop up a dialog saying I have detected the call and then the user presses a button to close the dialog which calls finish() on that activity. It all works fine except that when I then hold the home key to bring up the recently used apps the dialer icon is there. And when it is clicked the dialog is brought back into focus in the foreground when the dialog activity should be dead and gone and not be able to be brought back to the foreground. Here is a picture of what I mean. So two questions arise, why would the dialer icon be getting placed there and why would it be recalling my activity to the foreground? • dymanic columns in mysql tables?

  i want to add dynamic columns in a mysql table. but i dont know exactly how. i want to let the user add some columns (fields) in a thread. eg. let him add a integer field and a value (eg. price: 199) or a string field and a value (eg. name: teddybear). the user can add as many field/value-pairs as he wants. i thought i could create a many-to-many table: thread <- thread_field <- field thread: id, title thread_field: field_id, thread_id, value field: id, name is this a good structure? but in this way i have to set a specific column type of thread_field.value. either its an integer or a string. i want to have the possibility to have it dymanic, let the user choose. how can i do this? thanks!

At the moment I am adding the Button after the data is bound in Page_Load. The problem is that the data binding methods are not called in postbacks, so the Button disappears when I click on it. Any suggestions on how to do this? Problem is that I need to know some attributes of the grid item to create the Button, so I cannot create it before the data has been bound.

• Javascript to add cdata section on the fly?

  I'm having trouble with special characters that exist in an xml node attribute. To combat this, I'm trying to render the attributes as child nodes and, where necessary, using cdata sections to get around the special characters. The problem is, I can't seem to get the cdata section appended to the node correctly. I'm iterating over the source xml node's attributes and creating new nodes. If the attribute.name = "description" I want to put the attribute.text() in a cdata section and append the new node. It comes up with a box where I entered in the GUID. I copied and pasted it straight from my test database. I get this error. Msg 102, Level 15, State 1, Line 5 Incorrect syntax near 'cac671b'. So why can't I sent in GUIDs? even ones that are copied right from the database and must be valid as they where allowed into the db.

  I'm trying to put an mysql query result into an string I tried to find an answer but all the similar posts were getting subquery answers which is not what I'm trying to do. for example Fruits_tbl ID Fruit Color Number __________________________________ 2 Apple Red 5 $sql = "select Fruits,Color,Number from Fruits_tbl where ID = 2"; $result = $pdo->query($sql); $row = $result->fetch(); print_r($row); This will give me something like Array([0]="Apple", [1]="Red", [2]="5", [Fruit]="Apple", [Color]="Red", [Number]="5") implode will give me 2 of each I want just need a string = "Apple, Red, 5" what I currently have is $string = $row[Fruit].", ".$row[Color].", ".$row['Number'] As you can see that's rather tedious. Is there something like implode but only return the index array or something?

• What method of UIView gets called when instantiated from a NIB?

  I have a simple custom view that is connected via outlet to a NIB. For this particular view, there are actions that I would like to perform on the view when it is initialized, no matter what NIB it is on. Trouble is, neither the (id)init or the (id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frame methods are getting called on the custom view. Which method gets called on a UIView when it is instantiated from a NIB? I would just use the view controller and viewDidLoad method except that this particular view appears on a lot of different NIBs.

• DBConcurrencyException happening on second delete

  My code keeps throwing a DBConcurrencyException ("Concurrency violation: the DeleteCommand affected 0 of the expected 1 records.) when I make a second update to the data table. The problem actually happens on a table that is linked to a parent table. The two tables, CashReceipts and CashReceiptsApplyTo are displayed on the same winform, and when I delete two cash receipts the update on cash receipt apply to's table fails with the dbconcurrencyexception (the table is updated everytime the binding source [linked to a binding navigator] changes position). Is that correct? I thought that we could create a number of unique keys in one table, but only one primary key. How is it that my system is allowing the creation of multiple primary keys? Please advise: what are the rules governing this?

  Lets say I have 2 activities: A: A ListView displaying articles titles. Data is fetched from a web server and converted from XML to a list of ArticleSummary. Only user titles and id are returned by the server. Click on a title starts activity B. B: A form to edit an article. Article is fetched from server. When the user hits OK, modifications are sent to the server and activity closed. When the user go back to activity A, I would like to update the article title without any additional web request. I was thinking about the following solution: When article is modified, send a broadcast event with article id and new attributes values. Listen for this event on activity A Update the ArticleSummary object notify data changed on ListView Is there a better approach ?

I only want to update the row in the import table with the id of the banner from the banner table if the count is equal to 1.

• Optimizing sparse dot-product in C#

  Hello. I'm trying to calculate the dot-product of two very sparse associative arrays. The arrays contain an ID and a value, so the calculation should be done only on those IDs that are common to both arrays, e.g. <(1, 0.5), (3, 0.7), (12, 1.3) * <(2, 0.4), (3, 2.3), (12, 4.7) = 0.7*2.3 + 1.3*4.7 . My implementation (call it dict) currently uses Dictionaries, but it is too slow to my taste. double dot_product(IDictionary<int, double> arr1, IDictionary<int, double> arr2) { double res = 0; double val2; foreach (KeyValuePair<int, double> p in arr1) if (arr2.TryGetValue(p.Key, out val2)) res += p.Value * val2; return res; } The full arrays have about 500,000 entries each, while the sparse ones are only tens to hundreds entries each. I did some experiments with toy versions of dot products. First I tried to multiply just two double arrays to see the ultimate speed I can get (let's call this "flat"). Then I tried to change the implementation of the associative array multiplication using an int[] ID array and a double[] values array, walking together on both ID arrays and multiplying when they are equal (let's call this "double"). I then tried to run all three versions with debug or release, with F5 or Ctrl-F5. The results are as follows: debug F5: dict: 5.29s double: 4.18s (79% of dict) flat: 0.99s (19% of dict, 24% of double) debug ^F5: dict: 5.23s double: 4.19s (80% of dict) flat: 0.98s (19% of dict, 23% of double) release F5: dict: 5.29s double: 3.08s (58% of dict) flat: 0.81s (15% of dict, 26% of double) release ^F5: dict: 4.62s double: 1.22s (26% of dict) flat: 0.29s ( 6% of dict, 24% of double) I don't understand these results. Why isn't the dictionary version optimized in release F5 as do the double and flat versions? Why is it only slightly optimized in the release ^F5 version while the other two are heavily optimized? Also, since converting my code into the "double" scheme would mean lots of work - do you have any suggestions how to optimize the dictionary one? Thanks! Haggai

  I am a little curious, I have a view controller class and an NIB/XIB (both are named "MapViewController") If I do the following it loads the NIB with the matching name. -(id)init { self = [super initWithNibName:@"MapViewController" bundle:nil]; if(self) { do things ... } return self; } if on the other hand I just specify [super init] does Xcode just look for a NIB that matches the name of the controller, is that how this is working? -(id)init { self = [super init]; if(self) { do things ... } return self; } cheers Gary.

• Finding group maxes in SQL join result

  Two SQL tables. One contestant has many entries: Contestants Entries Id Name Id Contestant_Id Score -- ---- -- ------------- ----- 1 Fred 1 3 100 2 Mary 2 3 22 3 Irving 3 1 888 4 Grizelda 4 4 123 5 1 19 6 3 50 Low score wins. Need to retrieve current best scores of all contestants ordered by score: Best Entries Report Name Entry_Id Score ---- -------- ----- Fred 5 19 Irving 2 22 Grizelda 4 123 I can certainly get this done with many queries. My question is whether there's a way to get the result with one, efficient SQL query. I can almost see how to do it with GROUP BY, but not quite. In case it's relevant, the environment is Rails ActiveRecord and PostgreSQL.

• Split text files Accross threads

  The problem: I have a few text files (10) with numbers in them on every line. I need to have them split across some threads I create using the pthread library. these threads that are created (worker threads) are to find the largest prime number that gets sent to them (and over all the largest prime from all of the text files). My current thoughts on solutions: I am thinking myself to have two arrays and all of the text files in one array and the other array will contain a binary file that I can read say 1000 lines and send the pointer to the index of that binary file in a struct that contains the id, file pointer, and file position and let it crank through that. a little bit of what I am talking about pthread_create(&threads[index],NULL,calc_sqrt,(void *)threadFields[index]);//Pass struct to each worker Struct: typedef struct threadFields{ int *id, *position; FILE *Fin; }tField; If anyone has any insight or a better solution it would be greatly appreciated Thanks
