  • Best way to access database from android

    I am working on a Android app and I have a dilemma. I have a list of Objects. I have to update each of these objects with a database. I have 2 methods: Method 1: I can loop through the Objects. For each object I can connect to the server, update it, and then move on to the next Object, and so forth. Method 2: I can store the Objects in a list, send the whole list to the server, update it on the server side, then return a list of updated objects. My questions are: Which method is faster? Which method is easier on the phone's battery? By the way, Method 1 is easier for me to code :). Thank you.

  • Implement a vpn

    I want to build an application client(client.exe) - server to do the following: when the clients run it they are thrown in a VPN and they can communicate each other within 1 applicataion. For example : clients run client.exe and they can see each other in LAN ONLY in Starcraft. From what i have read the right type of vpn for this situation is Secured Socket Tunneling Protocol: "Secure socket tunneling protocol, also referred to as SSTP, is by definition an application-layer protocol. It is designed to employ a synchronous communication in a back and forth motion between two programs. It allows many application endpoints over one network connection, between peer nodes, thereby enabling efficient usage of the communication resources that are available to that network. " Question: I don't have experience with networking programming so my question for the ones who have, is this the right approach? PS1: i don't want something done like OpenVpn, i do this as learning exercise.     I have two textbox's. I have an event setup for the "onLostFocus" of the textbox's. If i finish typing a word into both boxes one after the other all is well. At the point where i click back on the first textbox i want to click halfway through the word (perfectly resonable thing for a user to do). When the onLostFocus event fires here is my code : void tbox_LostFocus(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { IInputElement focusedelement = FocusManager.GetFocusedElement(this); if (focusedelement is TextBox) { TextBox focusedTextBox = focusedelement as TextBox; int focusIndex = m_commandsStacker.Children.IndexOf(focusedTextBox); int caretIndex = focusedTextBox.CaretIndex; The caret index is 0. At that point I refresh the whole form and set parameters and all other kinds of whizzery, storing the texbox index and caret position to put everything back the same. Why does it return 0 and not the position where the caret should be halfway between the word?

  • matlab: figure size, same axis size

    I have a figure with fixed size, like that: hFig = figure(1); set(hFig, 'Position', [200 200 500 500]) But the thing is, that I want to have my AXIS with fixed size (i want them to be a square), not (necessary) the whole figure... - see image attached, Y axis is a bit longer than X axis (of course longer in a meaning of display... X and Y axis range is set to the same value). How to adjust it? Thanks!

  • JQuery. Hide elements before they rendered. Best practice

    Hello everybody, I want to generate html layout with areas (divs, spans) that can be shown/hidden conditionally. These areas are hidden by default. If I call .hide method with jquery on document.ready these areas may blink (browsers render partially loaded documents). So I apply "display: none" style in html layout. I wonder what is the best practice to avoid blinking, because applying "display:none" breaks incapsulation rule - I know what jquery does with hide/show and use it. If jquery's hiding/showing implementation will change one day, I'll get the whole site unworkable. Thank you in advance

  • Optimising Database Calls

    I have a database that is filled with information for films, which is (in turn) read in to the database from an XML file on a webserver. What happens is the following: Gather/Parse XML and store film info as objects Begin Statement For every film object we found: Check to see if record for film exists in database If no film record, write data for film Commit Statement Currently I just test for the existence of a film using (the very basic): SELECT film_title FROM film WHERE film_id = ? If that returns a row, then the film exists, if not then I need to add it... The only problem is, is that there are many many hundreds of records in the database (lots of films!) and because it has to check for the existence of a film in the database before it can write it, the whole process ends up taking quite a while (about 27 seconds for 210 films) Is there a more efficient method of doing this, or just any suggestions in general?   • StackOverflow Site Layout Problem in Chrome

    I was cleaning up one of my questions here and noticed that Stack Overflow's comments were overflowing into the right column in Chrome. The question is, what's the difference in CSS handling between Chrome and Firefox. I don't have access to Safari, Opera, et al. Can someone tell me in which browsers the error manifests? Is it just me? Here's the layout error: (my apologies to Tim Down for covering up his name with my comment bubble) Since I have no natural skill for good layouts and the whole process makes me sad, I wonder if someone can diagnose the error on StackOverflow and make a recommendation on how to avoid it. Is this a consequence of embedding a div inside a td? Plus I admit it. It's fun to point out an error on one of the greatest sites ever.

    When the init process is executed when the kernel has loaded, does it read the /etc/inittab file in a top down approach i.e. it executes each line as it appears in the file. If so and based on my reading and understanding, does this mean that it enters the documented run level and then launch sysinit process or vice versa?     This is a crucial question to many: Searching the web, I have found several command line tools that allow you to convert a HTML-document to a PDF-document, however they all seem to use their own, and rather incomplete rendering engine, resulting in poor quality How can you print the rendered output of a modern web-browser to pdf, (and/or svg) whilst retaining as much vector graphics as possible? There is a solution called: webkit-pdf (which renders everything to bitmap graphics) I am looking for options, alternatives, suggestions perhaps even a printer-driver or webservices? Thanks

  • C++/CLI: Compiling static library with /CLR support

    We have old (working) code that consists of a static library compiled with /CLR, and a C++/CLI DLL that links to the static lib. We are about to add new features to this static lib. Now, I've have heard from numerous sources that CLR static libraries are not supported by Microsoft, and therefore I'm pushing to clean this up and switch to DLL before we start adding new features to this project. However, I haven't been able to find any official information from Microsoft regarding this (say, from MSDN - other than their forums). I will appreciate any resources about this whole "static lib with CLR" issue.

  • How can I append text to a start and end of a file as header and footer ?

    I'm filling an XML document manually using C# and I need to have <data> as header and </data> as footer for the whole XML file. Is there an easy way to do that ? I know It can be done but I couldn't find a way to do it. Keep in mind that I'm updating the entries so I need to make sure that they always come between the header and the footer.   • Out of memory error when enabling openX Market plugin

    We're trying to enable the openX Market plugin on openX 2.8.9. Enabling the plugin results in an "Allowed memory exceeded" error: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 201326592 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 76 bytes) in /home/openx/lib/pear/PEAR.php on line 868 no matter what we have our php memory_limit set to. It even exceeded 512MB. We're running RHEL 5.6 and PEAR 1.9.4 Has anybody else come across this problem?

  • Zip up web page groups to view in browsers

    There should be a standard for saving viewing bunches of webpages as a website. For instance, say I have a whole bunch of pages, such as I get from the WordPress plugin "Really Static" which saves an entire site, and I have all the links start with a slash. Now, I can't really use those links if I am reading it from the file system. If there would be a standard where we could zip up files, give them a unique extension (like "hzip" for html zip), and open the file with any browser, which would display it as though the root of that file were the root of the pages. "http://example.com" The links would all work right. This would facilitate sharing and copying groups of webpages.

    In the Script documents that asp.net automatically generates how can I surround the whole generated scripts with try/catch statement to avoid 'Microsoft JScript Compilation error' My issue is: i got a DevExpress control (ASPxGridView) that added and set-up in run time, since i activated the grouping functionality in the grid I still get JS error says ';' expected whenever i use (click) on one of grouping/sorting abilities, I activated script Debugging for IE, in the JS code turns out that there is no missing ';' and once i click ignore for the error msg that VS generates every thing works fine, and surly end-user can't see this msg so i figured out if i try/catch the script that may help avoid this error.     I'm working on a pretty complex DSL that I want to compile down into a few high level languages. The whole process has been a learning experience. The compiler is written in java. I was wondering if anyone knew a best practice for the design of the code generator portion. I currently have everything parsed into an abstract syntax tree.     I have three consecutive points of polygon, say p1,p2,p3. Now I wanted to know whether the orthogonal between p1 and p3 is inside the polygon or outside the polygon. I am doing it by taking three vectors v1,v2 and v3. And the point before the point p1 in polygon say p0. v1 = (p0 - p1) v2 = (p2 - p1) v3 = (p3 - p1) With reference to this question, I am using the method shown in the accepted answer of that question. It is only for counterclockwise. What if my points are clockwise. I am also knowing my whole polygon is clockwise or counterclockwise. And accordingly I select the vectors v1 and v2. But still I am getting some problem. I am showing one case where I am getting problem. This polygon is counterclockwise. and It is starting from the origin of v1 and v2.

    Imagine I have a csv with and each value is an integer. so the first value is the INTEGER 100. I want fscanf() to read this line, and either tell me it's an integer ONLY, or not. So, it would pass 100 but fail on 100t. What i've been trying to get work is "%d," where the comma is the delimiter of my CSV. so the whole function is fscanf(fp, "%d,", &count) Unfortunately, this fails to fail on '100t,' works on '100' and works on 't'. so it just isn't distinguishing between 100 and 100t (all of these numbers are followed by commas, of course

    I know REST is meant to be resource-oriented, which roughly translates to CRUD operations on these resources using standard HTTP methods. But what I just wanted to update a part of a resource? For example, let's say I have Payment resource and I wanted to mark its status as "paid". I don't want to POST the whole Payment object through HTTP (sometimes I don't even have all the data). What would be the RESTful way of doing this?
