• Rubygems on Debian: Gems won't load (LoadError)

  I've installed the development version of Crunchbang, a linux distro based off Debian. I got Ruby and Rubygems installed, but I can't get the gems I've installed to load. • Problem with Spring security's logout

  Hello, I've got a problem logging out in Spring framework. • How can I add a portrait layout on top of a landscape Camera SurfaceView?

  I need a Camera SurfaceView for my application. The camera should be set to fixed landscape view which is done by setting android:screenOrientation="landscape" for the activity in the AndroidManifest.xml. After doing some experiments and Google researches trying to use setRotation(int) inside the camera preview implementation, I came to the conclusion, that it is obviously the common practice to get a preview with correct behaviour. Now the camera preview itself looks fine for landscape orientation. But I need to have an overlay that holds a bunch of buttons. Due to usability the user interface should be in portrait view (or even better orientation aware). There seemed no other option to me, but to fix the activity screenOrientation, so that the camera preview looks normal (in portrait mode the whole view is streched and rotated to the left) Is there a workaround to get my buttons back to portrait orientation? Or another overall approach to deal with the camera view? Parameters.setRotation(int) obvisouly didnt work. I am quite new to the Android plattform programming. Of course I dont know much about the programming tricks and workarounds yet. I did a lot of research over the last two weeks, but couldnt find the right solution so far.

• C#: Easy access to the member of a singleton ICollection<> ?

  I have an ICollection that I know will only ever have one member. Currently, I loop through it, knowing the loop will only ever run once, to grab the value. Is there a cleaner way to do this? I could alter the persistentState object to return single values, but that would complicate the rest of the interface. • slow SQL command

  I need to take some data from one table (and expand some XML on the way) and put it in another table. As the source table can have thousands or records which caused a timeout I decided to do it in batches of 100 records. The code is run on a schedule so doing it in batches works ok for the customer. If I have say 200 records in the source database the sproc runs very fast but if there are thousands it takes several minutes. I'm guessing that the "TOP 100" only takes the top 100 after it has gone through all the records. I need to change the whole code and sproc at some point as it doesn't scale but for now is there a quick fix to make this run quicker ? • How to parse rss from a php page, using jQuery/jFeed?

  I'm trying to fumble my way through parsing rss sensibly, using jQuery and jFeed. Because of the same origin policy I'm pulling the BBC's health news feed into a local page (http://www.davidrhysthomas.co.uk/play/proxy.php). Originally this was just the same proxy.php script as available in the jFeed download package, but due to my host's disabling allow_url_fopen() I've amended the php to the following: $url = "http://newsrss.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk_edition/health/rss.xml"; $ch = curl_init(); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_URL, $url); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HEADER, 0); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, 1); $data = curl_exec($ch); echo "$data"; curl_close($ch); Which seems to generate the same/comparable contents as the original fopen on my local machine. Now that seems to be working, I'm looking at setting the jFeed script up to work with the page and, to my embarrassment, don't see how. I understand that, at the least, this should work: jQuery.getFeed({ url: 'http://www.davidrhysthomas.co.uk/play/proxy.php', success: function(feed) { alert(feed.title); } }); ...but, as I'm sure you anticipate, it doesn't. • Android maps out of memory error

  Hi , sometimes when running a google maps program with an overlay image i will receive a bit map out of memory error. It always seems to be at a random point in the app. Im not sure how to solve this. Anyone have any ideas ? • Open PDF Content files in ASP.NET MVC 2

  I want to provide simple href links to my PDF forms that reside in my Forms folder. I have a created a simple Index.aspx and FormController Index action that simple iterates through the list of PDF files using my FormMetaData.xml file. The links get created just fine but when you click on the links I get a 404 exception. That looks like this: Server Error in '/' Application. The resource cannot be found. Description: HTTP 404. The resource you are looking for (or one of its dependencies) could have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. Please review the following URL and make sure that it is spelled correctly. Requested URL: /Forms/ccindteamgolfform.pdf Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.4927; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.4927 This seems like this should open up a new browser window with the PDF in it but perhaps I am making a bad assumption. The PDF content files have Build Action of Content and Copy to Output set to Copy Always. Here is an example output html for the link from my Index.aspx page: <span class="form"> <a href="Forms/ccindteamgolfform.pdf" target="_blank"> <span class="description">Entry Form</span></span> I must be missing something because this does not work. Do I need to add a MapRoute for these documents? Or am I missing something else with the routing? This seems like it should not be that difficult.

• About Data Objects and DAO Design when using Hibernate

  I'm hesitating between two designs of a database project using Hibernate. Design #1. (1) Create a general data provider interface, including a set of DAO interfaces and general data container classes. It hides the underneath implementation. A data provider implementation could access data in database, or an XML file, or a service, or something else. The user of a data provider does not to know about it. (2) Create a database library with Hibernate. This library implements the data provider interface in (1). The bad thing about Design #1 is that in order to hide the implementation details, I need to create two sets of data container classes. One in the general data provider interface - let's call them DPI-Objects, the other set is used in the database library, exclusively for entity/attribute mapping in Hibernate - let's call them H-Objects. In the DAO implementation, I need to read data from database to create H-Objects (via Hibernate) and then convert H-Objects into DPI-Objects. Design #2. Do not create a general data provider interface. Expose H-Objects directly to components that use the database lib. So the user of the database library needs to be aware of Hibernate. I like design #1 more, but I don't want to create two sets of data container classes. Is that the right way to hide H-Objects and other Hibernate implementation details from the user who uses the database-based data provider? Are there any drawbacks of Design #2? I will not implement other data provider in the new future, so should I just forget about the data provider interface and use Design #2? What do you think about this? Thanks for your time!

  Hi, I don't know much about delphi win 32 programming, but I hope someone can answer my question. I get duplicate l_sGetUniqueIdBuffer saved into the database which I want to avoid. The l_sGetUniqueIdBuffer is actually different ( the value of l_sAuthorisationContent is xml, and I can see a different value generated by the call to getUniqueId) between rows. This problem is intermittant ( duplicates are rare...) There is only milliseconds difference between the update date between the rows. It's not required for me to specify a ruleset name if I am using the attribute approach and I can validate using: ValidationResults results = Validation.Validate(salary); Now when reading from config files, I have to specify the ruleset name. There is no overload of the CreateValidator method that accepts the configuration source without specifying the ruleset name. Also, the xml in the config file requires a name attribute for ruleset

• How to restrict access to a class's data based on state?

  In an ETL application I am working on, we have three basic processes: Validate and parse an XML file of customer information from a third party Match values received in the file to values in our system Load customer data in our system The issue here is that we may need to display the customer information from any or all of the above states to an internal user and there is data in our customer class that will never be populated before the values have been matched in our system (step 2). For this reason, I would like to have the values not even be available to be accessed when the customer is in this state, and I would like to have to avoid some repeated logic everywhere like: if (customer.IsMatched) DisplayTextOnWeb(customer.SomeMatchedValue); My first thought for this was to add a couple interfaces on top of Customer that would only expose the properties and behaviors of the current state, and then only deal with those interfaces. The problem with this approach is that there seems to be no good way to move from an ICustomerWithNoMatchedValues to an ICustomerWithMatchedValues without doing direct casts, etc... (or at least I can't find one). I can't be the first to have come across this, how do you normally approach this? As a last caveat, I would like for this solution to play nice with FluentNHibernate :) Thanks in advance...

• Building a custom (dynamic) dataset and grid

  Hi, I'm in the process of building a dynamic table in which you can add/remove rows & columns so it varies in size depending on what the user wants. Its purpose is to store properties for a product, but there can be from 1 to 10 different properties(columns) per product, and multiple instances(rows) of the product as well. Here's a screenshot of what I mean http://i40.tinypic.com/nbqkxc.jpg As you can see I need the structure to be completely up to the client which is where I'm getting stuck. I've started writing a custom DataSet that has "add column" & "add row" buttons, and have built a custom Table with Textboxes in each cell which builds from that dataset. I have no idea how to store the data on submit though, and to make it even more complex I need to store this in the database as a string which I think I can do by converting it to XML. Any help is appreciated, I think I just need a pointer in the right direction and am happy to do research from there. Thanks in advance. Marko

• Alternatives to using web.config to store settings (for complex solutions)

  In our web applications, we seperate our Data Access Layers out into their own projects. This creates some problems related to settings. Because the DAL will eventually need to be consumed from perhaps more than one application, web.config does not seem like a good place to keep the connection strings and some of the other DAL-related settings. To solve this, on some of our recent projects we introduced a third project just for settings. We put the setting in a system of .Setting files... With a simple wrapper, the ability to have different settings for various enviroments (Dev, QA, Staging, Production, etc) was easy to achieve. The only problem there is that the settings project (including the .Settings class) compiles into an assembly, so you can't change it without doing a build/deployment, and some of our customers want to be able to configure their projects without Visual Studio. So, is there a best practice for this? I have that sense that I'm reinventing the wheel. Some solutions such as storing settings in a fixed directory on the server in, say, our own XML format occurred to us. But again, I would rather avoid having to re-create encryption for sensitive values and so on. And I would rather keep the solution self-contained if possible. EDIT: The original question did not contain the really penetrating reason that we can't (I think) use web.config ... That puts a few (very good) answers out of context, my bad.

  I have adapted the example plugin of the android source and the browser recognises the plugin without any problem. But I get lot's of debug trace of the actual libnpplugin.so file I'm using. So the puzzle is when and under what circumstance is the Service bound or created in case of a browser plugin. As things look the service seems to be a dummy service. Having said that, is there another intent that can be executed at installation time probably? The only solution I see right now is installing the needed files from the native plugin code instead. Any ideas? I know this is quite a tricky question ;)

• navigateToURL with GET parameters in local SWF

  I'm running a Flex application locally (local-with-filesystem or local-trusted), and I'm trying to call navigateToURL to a local page using GET parameters. Flash Player seems to be ignoring the parameters when opening the local page, though. • razor websites not working and all dlls are present

  I've uploaded a .cshtml website to a surftown server, and I got some problems running the code. But I have a problem with it running the Razor code. This is how the page renders:(Default.cshtml) I've already checked for internal communication problems. And this is my result: But then why isn't it working, and how can I fix it? I've heard that it can be a problem with views but how whould I fix this if that's the case? • Is there a Post-Build Extensible Installer System

  We have a product that we need to create an installer for. It has a number of components which can be installed or not as the situation demands. When we ship our installation package, we want to be able to have that include any number of additional components to be installed. For example, Foo Manager Pro contains: Foo Manager Console Foo Manager Database Foo Manager Services That might be shipped as something like: FooManagerInstaller.exe FMPConsole.pkg FMPDatabase.pkg FMPServices.pkg A package might consist of something like: Manifest Files to be deployed Additional scripts to be executed (eg find file foo.config, do some XML Manipulation) If a client wants to add custom skins and a series of plugins as part of the install, they create their own packages: FMPConsoleSkins.pkg ClientWebservices.pkg If that client then ships it to someone else who wants to add more customisation - they can do so in the same way. We can build this from scratch - but wanted to check if this sort of install system already exists. We already have a set of NAnt scripts which do something not too far from this. But they're difficult to maintain, and quite complex. They don't offer any of the 'niceties' that we'd expect from an installer (like tracking deployed files and removing them if the install fails). We've been looking a little bit at NSIS and building MSIs using WiX, but it's not clear that these can offer us the capability for downstream to provide additional packages, without inventing our own installer language.

• XElement vs Dcitionary

  Hi All, I need advice. I have application that imports 10,000 rows containing name & address from a text file into XElements that are subsequently added to a synchronized queue. When the import is complete the app spawns worker threads that process the XElements by deenqueuing them, making a database call, inserting the database output into the request document and inserting the processed document into an output queue. When all requests have been processed the output queue is written to disk as an XML doc. I used XElements for the requests because I needed the flexibility to add fields to the request during processing. i.e. Depending on the job type the app might require that it add phone number, date of birth or email address to a request based on a name/address match against a public record database. My questions is; The XElements seems to use quite a bit of memory and I know there is a lot of parsing as the document makes its way through the processing methods. I’m considering replacing the XElements with a Dictionary object but I’m skeptical the gain will be worth the effort. In essence it will accomplish the same thing. Thoughts?

• Can I return JSON from an .asmx Web Service if the ContentType is not JSON?

  I would like to post a form using ajax and jquery to a .asmx webservice and return the value from the webservice as JSON. I'm using ASP.NET 4.0. I know that in order to return JSON from a webservice the following needs to be set (1) dataType: "json" (2) contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", (3) type: "POST" (4) set the Data to something. I have tested this and it works fine (i.e. my webservice returns the data as JSON) if all *four are set*. But, lets say in my case I want to do a standard form post i.e. test1=value1&test2=value2 so the contentType is not JSON but I want back JSON {test1:value1}. This doesn't seem to work because the contentType is "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" not "application/json; charset=utf-8". Can anyone tell me why I can't do this? It seems crazy to me that you have to explicitly send JSON to get JSON back, yet if you don't use JSON (i.e. post urlencoded contenttype) then the webservice will return XML. Any insights are greatly appreciated :)

However when I come to run the jsp file it doesn't work and I get an error "ResultSet not positioned properly".   Hi, I am very new to html/xml/css and I'm trying my best to teach myself. However, I have run into a problem that a Google search could not solve. I would like to position a small image in a fixed location relative to another element(?) I believe this is the code of the element i want to position the second element relative to. #wrap { width:550px; background-color:#fff; margin:0 auto; padding:0; border-right:1px solid #ccc; border-left:1px solid #ccc; } #container { width: 500px; margin:0 auto; padding: 25px; font-size:.85em; background-color: #fff; } and this is partial code I'm trying to edit to position .xyz to the right of "#wrap" .xyz { position: ???; top: 200px; right: ???; _position: ???; _margin: ???; _text-align: right; z-index: 1337; } my search of SOF has lead me to believe i'm supposed to do something along the lines of this - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/104953/position-an-html-element-relative-to-its-container-using-css - but i haven't been able to. I greatly appreciate any help you may offer. Hopefully I've explained my problem properly.
