• How To Completely Disable Subtitles in VLC

  If you watch a lot of videos using VLC, you might have noticed that it enables subtitles by default if they are there, which can be pretty annoying at times. Here’s the quick tip to disable them entirely. Of course, you can always turn them back on if you want on an individual video basis. Disable Subtitles Head into the VLC preferences, and then click the All button at the bottom of the screen. On the left-hand side, choose Video –> Subtitles/OSD, and then uncheck the boxes for “Autodetect subtitle files”, Enable sub-pictures, and On Screen Display. That should do it, unless the subtitles are forced in the video for some reason. Note: Certain video formats like MKV can sometimes have subtitles enabled even though there isn’t a separate subtitles file. This is why you need to remove “Enable sub-pictures” as well, which totally disables the on-screen text. You can choose to only uncheck the autodetecting of subtitles instead if you’d prefer. And of course, you can simply right-click on the video, head to Video –> Subtitles Track and then choose the subtitles if you still wanted them. Note: this only works if the “enable sub-pictures” option is still enabled. And thus ends the tale of disabling those fracking subtitles. Starbuck approves. • Unknown filesystem error

  My computer has (had) a dual boot of Ubuntu Precise and Windows 7. Recently, when I started the computer, grub gave me an error saying "Unknown filesystem", and sent me to grub rescue. I searched for solutions to this, and found this answer: Unknown filesystem error: grub rescue. I followed the instructions there, but they didn't really help: when I restarted the computer, it went straight to Windows without grub intervening at all (so it boots successfully, just not to the OS I want). This is the log from boot-repair. My Ubuntu partition is sda6. Naturally, I'm a little worried, since the log says "unknown filesystem type ''", which to me looks like the partition might be corrupt somehow. From the Ubuntu Live CD, I started gparted and looked at my partitions, and it also told me that my sda6 is an unknown filesystem. So my questions are basically: Can I restore Ubuntu to the way it was? If not, can I at least rescue the data I had on the partition somehow? Again, if I can't restore Ubuntu, how do I clean everything up so that I can reinstall it without too many complications? Another thing I should mention is that yesterday I had a similar problem where the computer told me there was a problem with the hard drive when it was starting, but it fixed itself by running fsck (that time it got past grub, and managed to start Ubuntu). Between that occasion and me having trouble booting the computer today, I have booted it successfully at least twice. Thanks for any help!

  I read in some answers about using the "Apple" + "Space bar" keys. Which is the "Apple" key? Also, I see in my Mac OS X Safari menu bar that to open the download window I can use a 3 key combination. The last of the 3 keys are the Command key (depicted with a clover leaf symbol) and the 'L' key. The first key is the one I don't see anywhere. It is depicted by a symbol that looks to me like an upper case 'X' with most of the forward slash part removed. What key is that? OK, just discovered by trial and error that it must be a symbol for the "option" key. What is that symbol called and why is it not on the keyboard?

• Domain Outlook user is asked for password every time despite checking the 'remember password' button

  We have a windows 2003 domain. All users have roaming profiles. We have a couple of users who, when they log into outlook, are asked for their password every time, despite selecting the 'remember my password' option. Our email is externally hosted exchange email. I've tried several fixes found on google such as deleting 'protect' folder in the user's profile, and deleting protect key in the registry but none work. I tried storing the password in windows' password/credentials manager, didn't work. It happens on any PC the users log into so it's not a machine specific problem. Any ideas? OS is Windows XP pro. Outlook is 2007.

So the questions is, what is the most impressive feat of programming you ever witnessed or heard of? You can define impressive by: The scope of the task at hand e.g. John single handedly developed the framework for his company, a work comparable in scope to what the other 200 employed were doing combined. Speed e.g. Stu programmed an entire real time multi-tasking app OS on an weekened including its own C compiler and shell command line tools Complexity e.g. Jane rearchitected our entire 10 millon LOC app to work in a cluster of servers. And she did it in an afternoon. Quality e.g. Charles's code had a rate of defects per LOC 100 times lesser than the company average. Furthermore he code was clean and understandable by all. Obviously, the more of these characteristics combined, and the more extreme each of them, the more impressive is the feat. So, let me have it. What's the most absurd feat you can recount? Please provide as much detail as possible and try to avoid urban legends or exaggerations. Post only what you can actually vouch for. Bonus questions: Was the herculean task a one-of, or did the individual regularly amazed people? How do you explain such impressive performance? How was the programmer recognized for such awesome work?

To answer that, we need to recall what characteristics define a cloud and then see how Solaris 11's capabilities map to those characteristics. By now, most cloud computing professionals have at least heard of, if not adopted, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Definition of Cloud Computing, including its vocabulary and conceptual architecture. NIST says that cloud computing includes these five characteristics: On-demand self-service Broad network access Resource pooling Rapid elasticity Measured service How does Solaris 11 support these capabilities? Well, one of the key enabling technologies for cloud computing is virtualization, and Solaris 11 along with Oracle's SPARC and x86 hardware offerings provides the full range of virtualization technologies including dynamic hardware domains, hypervisors for both x86 and SPARC systems, and efficient non-hypervisor workload virtualization with containers. • Is there a way to modify the default size of a new side note in OneNote 2010?

  I am a fan of OneNote, but there is one aspect of it that makes it less useful than it could be. When I make a new side note (i.e. by clicking the OneNote icon in the system tray or pressing WindowsKey + N), the size of the window of the resulting note that opens is far too large. It probably takes up 20% of my reasonably high-res screen by default. I have to click and drag to resize it, and that's a waste of my time. So, I have a two part question: Is there a way of modifying some settings somewhere (perhaps in the registry?) so that the default window size of a new side note is smaller than the default? I would prefer something more in line with the size of a new "sticky" note in OS X. If not, does anyone know of a fast way to shrink the size of a window using the keyboard? I'd appreciate any advice that anyone can give. Thanks.

• A Virtual Dilemma

  Solving a Gotcha with VirtualBox Guest Additions I was just building a new virtual machine based off an existing image that didn’t have the Virtual Box Guest Additions enabled.  The guest additions allow tight integration between the guest OS and the host environment, providing seemless mouse transfer and the ability to take advantage of full video screen size.  The guest additions need to be linked with the kernel which requires the kernel-devel package to be installed.  After installing this package and then trying to add the guest additions it failed, suggesting that I might not have the kernel-devel package that I had installed.  After a little though I finally realized what had happened.  When I grabbed the kernel-devel package I hadn’t checked the version of my kernel.  The kernel-devel I downloaded didn’t match the revision of the kernel I was running!  Hence my problems.  I upgraded the kernel to the same revision as my kernel-devel package and rebooted.  I had installed dkms so I was pleased to see that my VBox Additions successfully built and the mouse and screen now worked as expected. So now you know my embarrassing story for the day :-)

  i have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 in a Intel Ivy Bridge with integrated graphics and NVidia GPU with Optimus tech, however i cant manage it to work properly. I have already passed by the solution of bumblebee project, however iam got the following message when try to run anything with nvidia card( e.g. with optirun firefox): [ERROR]The Bumblebee daemon has not been started yet or the socket path /var/run/bumblebee.socket was incorrect. [ERROR]Could not connect to bumblebee daemon - is it running? • Which hardware changes require operating system reinstallation?

  I'm about to upgrade my computer but might keep some parts. Just wandering what I would have to keep to prevent me having to reinstall my OSs, at the moment I have a dual boot setup with ubuntu and windows 7. I'm pretty sure you can't just take your hard drive with the OS on it and put it into a different box and keep going (can you?) but I know you can change the graphics cards, secondary hard drives and ram with out a problem. So what is it that you can't change? The CPU? Motherboard? Thanks for any replies

• Sane(r) way to get character-encoding of CLI?

  Hi all! I was writing a CLI-Tool for Mac OS X (10.5+) that has to deal with command-line arguments which are very likely to contain non-ASCII characters. For further processing, I convert these arguments using +[NSString stringWithCString:encoding:]. My problem is, that I couldn't find good information on how to determine the character-encoding used by the shell in which said cli-tool is running in. What I came up with as a solution is the following: NSDictionary *environment = [[NSProcessInfo processInfo] environment]; NSString *ianaName = [[environment objectForKey:@"LANG"] pathExtension]; NSStringEncoding encoding = CFStringConvertEncodingToNSStringEncoding( CFStringConvertIANACharSetNameToEncoding( (CFStringRef)ianaName ) ); NSString *someArgument = [NSString stringWithCString:argv[someIndex] encoding:encoding]; I find that a little crude, however -- which makes me think that I missed out something obvious...but what? • How can I update fontconfig to a newer version in Red Hat 5.3?

  I want to update fontconfig to a newer version but it seems that the OS is still finding the old fontconfig and I need the newer version to build qt. How do I make Red Hat 5.3 see the newer version? I do not know if this helps but when I did a search for fontconfig I found some files in a folder called cache. When I do yum update it tells me everything is up to date but that version is too old and is missing FcFreeTypeQueryFace. Just send me a comment if this is wrong site and ill change it.

• Renting linux server just to make backups of my personnal data ?

  Hi all, I would like to be able to backup ALL my computers data on a Linux server. For now, I have a home server, but soon I will be travelling, without home (so no home server). I was thinking of renting a dedicated linux webserver, but this is expensive, and I don't need a fast machine "web-oriented" with mysql server and all, I just need a full SSH access (full control, and then I install my programs). Does "backup servers" exist ? Am I doing it wrong (maybe that is not a good solution) ? Note : I run Mac OS, Windows and Linux, I backup through rsync, I want full control on my backup, not an automated "magic" backup like MobileMe or anything like that. Edit : I need around 500Gb storage

• How do I get rid of Adobe Download Akamai software on a Mac?

  I installed Adobe's Download Manager Software when I was downloading a CS4 trial. It was called Akamai. I can not seem to get rid of this pesky thing. I have Little Snitch installed so I was annoyed that it showed that this app would phone home for updates every login. I felt this was an unnecessary process I wanted rid of. I've uninstalled it using App Cleaner. Now on login the Akamai app does not produce any Little Snitch prompts. "SoftwareUpdateCheck" does. SoftwareUpdateCheck wants to connect to a950.gi3.akamai.net on TCP 80. SoftwareUpdateCheck is /System/Library/CoreServices/SoftwareUpdate.app/Contents/Resources/SoftwareUpdateCheck.   I'm trying to set up an exclusion filter with a browser cookie, so that my own visits to my don't show up in my Google Analytics. I tried 3 different methods and none of them have worked so far. I would like help understanding what I am doing wrong and how I can fix this. Method 1 First, I tried following Google's instructions, http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55481, for excluding traffic by Cookie Content: Create a new page on your domain, containing the following code: <body onLoad="javascript:pageTracker._setVar('test_value');"> Method 2 Next, when that didn't work, I googled around and found this Google thread, http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google%20Analytics/thread?tid=4741f1499823fcd5&hl=en, where the most popular answer says to use a slightly different code: SHS Analytics wrote: <body onLoad="javascript:_gaq.push(['_setVar','test_value']);"> Thank you! This has now set a __utmv cookie containing "test_value", whereas the original: pageTracker._setVar('test_value') (which Google is still recommending) did not manage to do that for me (in Mac Safari 5 and Firefox 3.6.8). So I tried this code, but it didn't work for me. How can I exclude myself from my Google Analytics using an exclusion cookie for my browser? Update I've been testing this for several days now, and I've confirmed that the 2nd method of excluding yourself from tracking does indeed work. The problem was that the filter settings weren't properly applied to my profile, which has been corrected. See the accepted answer below.

• .NET development on Macs

  I posted the “exciting” conclusion of my laptop trade-ins and issues on my personal blog. The links, in chronological order, are posted below. While those posts have all of the details about performance and software used, I wanted to comment on why I like using Macs in the first place. It started in 2006 when Apple released the first Intel-based Mac. As someone with a professional video past, I had been using Macs on and off since college (1995 graduate), so I was never terribly religious about any particular platform. I’m still not, but until recently, it was staggering how crappy PC’s were. They were all plastic, disposable, commodity crap. I could never justify buying a PowerBook because I was a Microsoft stack guy. When Apple went Intel, they removed that barrier. They also didn’t screw around with selling to the low end (though the plastic MacBooks bordered on that), so even the base machines were pretty well equipped. Every Mac I’ve had, I’ve used for three years. Other than that first one, I’ve also sold each one, for quite a bit of money. Things have changed quite a bit, mostly within the last year. I’m actually relieved, because Apple needs competition at the high end. Other manufacturers are finally understanding the importance of industrial design. For me, I’ll stick with Macs for now, because I’m invested in OS X apps like Aperture and the Mac versions of Adobe products. As a Microsoft developer, it doesn’t even matter though… with Parallels, I Cmd-Tab and I’m in Windows. So after three and a half years with a wonderful 17” MBP and upgraded SSD, it was time to get something lighter and smaller (traveling light is critical with a toddler), and I eventually ended up with a 13” MacBook Air, with the i7 and 8 gig upgrades, and I love it. At home I “dock” it to a Thunderbolt Display.   Let me explain my backup strategy and the problem I am facing. My current backup strategy: Open encrypted container and execute Carbon Copy Cleaner on it at least once a week. Rotate backup disks. Problem: I have an Truecrypt partition on my 1st external hard disk. I recently found out that some files on this encrypted partition cannot be read due to bad blocks (reported by Antonio Diaz's GNU 'ddrescue'). My backup strategy is ineffective in this scenario because bad blocks are discovered during backup. Possible strategy Strategy #0: Have the encrypted partition over a RAID 1 with 2 disks. • OpenDocument format plugin for Mac Office 2008?

  Is there a plugin or script that lets Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac OS X open and save files in the OpenDocument ODF (.odt, .ods, .odp, etc.) format? I am thinking something like what you can do in Office 2007. I realise I could use an external converter, such as OpenOffice.org, just wondering if there is a more direct way. If such a plugin does not exist, would it be possible to manually make such a plugin? Such as via AppleScript (or anything else)? Thank you.

  Let's say we have two files. match.txt: A file containing patterns to match: fed ghi tsr qpo data.txt: A file containing lines of text: abc fed ghi jkl mno pqr stu vwx zyx wvu tsr qpo Now, I want to issue a grep command that should return the first and third line from data.txt: abc fed ghi jkl zyx wvu tsr qpo ... because each of these two lines match one of the patterns in match.txt. I have tried: grep -F -f match.txt data.txt but that returns no results. grep info: GNU grep 2.6.3 (cygwin) OS info: Windows 2008 R2 Update: It seems, that grep is confused by the space in the search pattern lines, but with the -F flag, it should be treating each line in match.txt as an individual match pattern.

• how to create iso dvd image for use with mac/osx "Disk Utility"?

  This seemed way easier on my pc. I would just pop a blank dvd in the drive, it asked what I wanted to do with it, to which I would respond, "burn dvd with nero" (paraphrasing), then I would pick "new" and just drag and drop the folders in there. Mac appears to have "Disk Utility" which just requires that I 'choose an image' but then doesn't bother to detail - how to do this - what the options mean e.g. format "mac OS extended (journaled)" is that ever going to be readable on a non mac machine? I want to create an ISO standard dvd as per the 'default' you'd get on nero. All the stuff on the web points to doing things with 'terminal' (the whole point of buying a mac was to get away from command line jiggery pokery - I'm trying to burn some photos not land a friggin lunar module here!)   I'm having trouble wading through Microsoft's marketing information. Does anyone know if Windows 7 x86 to Windows 7 x64 is a valid upgrade path? I know you can't actually use the built-in "upgrade" installation path; this is more of a licensing question. Although that may have answered my own question: is this idea even possible? Or do "upgrade" versions of Windows function only when executed from inside the OS, and not when doing fresh installs? Thanks!

• In *nix, how to determine which filesystem a particular file is on?

  In a generic, modern unix environment (say, GNU/Linux, GNU/Solaris, or Mac OS X), is there a good way to determine which mountpoint and filesystem-type a particular absolute file path is on? I suppose I could execute the mount command and manually parse the output of that and string-compare it with my file path, but before I do that I'm wondering if there's a more elegant way. I'm developing a BASH script that makes use of extended attributes, and want to make it Do The Right Thing (to the small extent that it is possible) for a variety of filesystems and host environments.
