  I'm trying to generate some C# code using xslt - its working great until I get to generics and need to output some text like this: MyClass<Type> In this case I've found that the only way to emit this is to do the following: MyClass<xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&lt;</xsl:text>Type<xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&gt;</xsl:text> Where: Often it all needs to go on one line, otherwise you end up with line breaks in the generated code In the above example I technically could have used only 1 <xsl:text />, however usually the type Type is given by some other template, e.g: <xsl:value-of select="@type" /> I don't mind having to write &lt; a lot, but I would like to avoid writing <xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&lt;</xsl:text> for just a single character! Is there any way of doing disable-output-escaping="yes" for the entire document?

• SQL Table stored as a Heap - the dangers within

  Nearly all of the time I create a table, I include a primary key, and often that PK is implemented as a clustered index. Those two don't always have to go together, but in my world they almost always do. On a recent project, I was working on a data warehouse and a set of SSIS packages to import data from an OLTP database into my data warehouse. The data I was importing from the business database into the warehouse was mostly new rows, sometimes updates to existing rows, and sometimes deletes. I decided to use the MERGE statement to implement the insert, update or delete in the data warehouse, I found it quite performant to have a stored procedure that extracted all the new, updated, and deleted rows from the source database and dump it into a working table in my data warehouse, then run a stored proc in the warehouse that was the MERGE statement that took the rows from the working table and updated the real fact table. I didn't think this would be a problem, since it was relatively small table and was empty after each time I ran the stored proc. For one of the work tables, during the initial loads of the warehouse, it was getting about 1.5 million rows inserted, processed, then deleted. Also, because of a bug in the extraction process, the same 1.5 million rows (plus a few hundred more each time) was getting inserted, processed, and deleted. This was being sone on a fairly hefty server that was otherwise unused, and no one was paying any attention to the time it was taking. This week I received a backup of this database and loaded it on my laptop to troubleshoot the problem, and of course it took a good ten minutes or more to run the process. However, what seemed strange to me was that after I fixed the problem and happened to run the merge sproc when the work table was completely empty, it still took almost ten minutes to complete. I immediately looked back at the MERGE statement to see if I had some sort of outer join that meant it would be scanning the target table (which had about 2 million rows in it), then turned on the execution plan output to see what was happening under the hood. Running the stored procedure again took a long time, and the plan output didn't show me much - 55% on the MERGE statement, and 45% on the DELETE statement, and table scans on the work table in both places. I was surprised at the relative cost of the DELETE statement, because there were really 0 rows to delete, but I was expecting to see the table scans. (I was beginning now to suspect that my problem was because the work table was being stored as a heap.) Then I turned on STATS_IO and ran the sproc again. The output was quite interesting.Table 'Worktable'. Scan count 0, logical reads 0, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0.Table 'Policy'. Scan count 0, logical reads 0, physical reads 0, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0.Table 'MergePolicy'. Scan count 1, logical reads 433276, physical reads 60, read-ahead reads 0, lob logical reads 0, lob physical reads 0, lob read-ahead reads 0. I've reproduced the above from memory, the details aren't exact, but the essential bit was the very high number of logical reads on the table stored as a heap. Even just doing a SELECT Count(*) from Integration.MergePolicy incurred that sort of output, even though the result was always 0. I suppose I should research more on the allocation and deallocation of pages to tables stored as a heap, but I haven't, and my original assumption that a table stored as a heap with no rows would only need to read one page to answer any query was definitely proven wrong. It's likely that some sort of physical defragmentation of the table may have cleaned that up, but it seemed that the easiest answer was to put a clustered index on the table. After doing so, the execution plan showed a cluster index scan, and the IO stats showed only a single page read. (I aborted my first attempt at adding a clustered index on the table because it was taking too long - instead I ran TRUNCATE TABLE Integration.MergePolicy first and added the clustered index, both of which took very little time). I suspect I may not have noticed this if I had used TRUNCATE TABLE Integration.MergePolicy instead of DELETE FROM Integration.MergePolicy, since I'm guessing that the truncate operation does some rather quick releasing of pages allocated to the heap table. In the future, I will likely be much more careful to have a clustered index on every table I use, even the working tables. Mike

(and ofcourse "event handling" the events triggered by the user's actions). I know about the page life cycle and the order of events that happens when a page is requested etc.. . Is it normal that, generally, in a data-driven page, for example, I'm not using any of the "pre_render", "page_unload", "pre_init" etc.. event handlers? or am I missing something here? any guidelines would help me a lot, including links or whatever you think that would instruct me well. thanks.

  Short version All I need is that, in a ModalPopUp, when the DoubleClick event of a ListItem fires, the click event of my OK button should be executed. Detail I have a ModalPopUpExtender, which hosts a user control. The user control has an OK and a Cancel button. Along with that, it has a dynamic ListBox added to it. So far, I've considered the following possible solutions: Use Ajax.Net. But, I cannot afford to have a WebMethod. Use a ClientScriptCallBack. This will need a lot of JavaScript, since I have made almost every control dynamic. Is there any other way apart from using an UpdatePanel?

• How to export SQL Server 2005 query to CSV

  I want to export some SQL Server 2005 data to CSV format (comma-separated with quotes). I can think of a lot of complicated ways to do it, but I want to do it the right way. I've looked at bcp, but I can't figure out how to put the quotes around the fields (except concatenating them to the field values, which is ugly). I guess I could do it with sqlcmd and -o, but that seems ugly for the same reason. Is there a bcp way to do it? Is there a reasonable sqlcmd way to do it? Is there some great, simple utility built into the Management Studio that I'm just overlooking?

  I know that there's a lot of free open source blog engine out there such as BlogEngine.NET. However that's an overkill for my purpose... I so far has created my own simple one by storing posts in a .xml file and so every time the main page loads it reads from all those xml files and displays it as posts. Now my problem is when a user clicks on a post title I want it to show on a new page(.aspx), so if the title is X then I want a new page called X.aspx when the user clicks on the title on the homepage. I hope this makes sense. My question is how do I create such thing?

• Remove Registry Keys for Windows Phone 7 Emulator

  I am trying to get the updated Windows Phone 7 tools installed, but can't get rid of the old ones. The uninstaller wouldn't run, so I had to try more extreme means. I got everything removed except for "Microsoft Windows Phone Emulator x64". Does anyone know what vm_web.exe (the tool installer) is checking for (registry, file, etc.) that prevents the installer from running. I tried Aaron Stebner's clean up tool, and it helped a lot, but couldn't get rid of the emulator.

  I'm maintaining some website code that currently dumps all errors and warnings into the apache log. This is a problem for me as i cannot access that due to lack of root. As such I am looking to redirect all warnings and errors to a specified log file under my control. I'd like to do so without preventing those messages from going through their usual patch of execution. Now, before i spend a lot of time fiddling with the Perl internals and possibly breaking things unawares I thought I'd look for a CPAN module that does this. However, I either do not know how to properly search for this, or I am overlooking something and thus cannot find any module that seems suitable. • VS2010 patce: why it's take so muce time to install it?

  Visual Studio 2010 RC has a few of patches release. For more information about them take a look here. What I'm expect from patch program, is to replace a few dll's of the program to a new fixed version of them. But when I run each of this 3 patches, they take a lot of time (5 minutes each), and you think that the program was frozen because the progress bar stay on the begging. This is question may not be so important, but it really interesting me to know, why this happens? It's really confusing to see that each VS2010 (or Microsoft in general) is frozen to 4-5 minutes.

  Hey, I was wondering what the most effective way of preventing people from stealing my application (downloading a copy of the .apk online rather than buying it). I've spent a lot of time on one in particular (Droidbox) and won't be releasing Sync until I can guarantee that the people who are providing illegal copies of the pro version aren't able to. Anyone implemented this? I've tried checking my package signature verses an the signature of an unsigned copy but it appears to be the same - perhaps I'm doing something incorrectly here. I'm unsure whether people actually distribute the signed .apk in which case I don't think signature validation would work to begin with... Please note, this question is specific to Android Marketplace Applications - the difference being, application delivery is out of my hands and I have no way of linking between a legitimate purchase and an illegal download.

  I have managed to do pretty complex things on iPhone but I am always stuck with views, frames, bounds, and simple stuff that defies any logic and don't work as expected. I have a self.view in my code and it has a lot of subviews on it. At some point of the code, I need to reduce the frame vertically to a specific size and later put it back as before. Then I have this code: [UIView beginAnimations:nil context:NULL]; [UIView setAnimationDuration:1.5]; // frame is changing to a newHeight (other parameters are the same as before) self.view.frame = CGRectMake (0, 0, originalWidth, newHeight); [UIView commitAnimations]; The result is simply, nothing. The view continues as before. The same size, the same position. No change. Why this kind of thing happens? how to solve that?

• Unable to fix broken packages with sudo apt-get install -f

  Here's my result, of sudo apt-get install -f. i have Ran it twice and got negative result. I believe there is an error at "error in Version string '0:3.6.1-dates for language English Translation data updates for all supported packages for: English" This same statement "error in Version string, caused me three days of attempting to download version 12.04. There is a bug report concerning the quoted text as well. Is there anyway to download the version without the language packs, why would I corrupt version 11.10? Also, when attempting to download Synaptic using sudo apt-get install synaptic, I get the same error message. Again I point out the initial download problems and the same error message receipt.   Using VB.Net, I have an XmlNode object, xNode. I need to select an attribute of this node if it has a particular value. e.g. xNode.SelectSingleNode(".[@attr1='1']") I would expect this statement to return the attribute "attr1", only if it has a value of "1". However, I get an error - Expression must evaluate to a node-set. When I tried this - xNode.SelectSingleNode("@attr1[@attr1='1']") It always returns Nothing, even if the attribute has a value of 1. I have tried a lot of different things, but no luck yet. Please help. Thanks.

And I'm trying to guess where this restriction came from and have no ideas.

• Repair bad character due to encoding problem

  Hi all, Recently we had an encoding problem in our system : If we had the string "æ" in our db ,it became "æ" on our web pages. Now this problem is solved, but the problem is that now we have a lot of "æ" in our database : users didn't see and validate pre-filled form with these characters. I found that If you read in utf 8 C3A6 you'll get "æ", if you read it in ascii you'll get "æ". It's strange because if I execute "select convert(varbinary(40),N'æ'),convert(varbinary(40),'æ')" I don't have the same result... Do you have any idea on how I can fix my database (ie change all "æ" to "æ") ? thx

  I am having a problem with my current RESTful api design. What I have is a REST api which is consumed by Django web-server, which renders the HTML templates. REST api > Django webserver > HTML The problem I am encountering is that I have to reconstruct all the URLS like mysite.com/main/cities/<id>/streets/ into equivalent rest api urls on my web-server layer: api.com/cities/<id>/streets/ Thus I have a lot of mapping back and forth, but as far as I know REST says that the client (in this case my web-server) should NOT need to know how to re-construct the urls. Can REST be used for such a setup and how? Or is it only viable for Server-Client architecture. Thanks

  Hi guys, I am having endless troubles with duplicate entries, so I need to check the database, and if a user has already entered that day, their entry will not be submitted and they will be redirected to a landing page that tells them they have already entered that day, and that they may only enter again tomorrow. The field I would like to check is the id_number field in the database, since each user has a unique id number, so basically, if a user with the same id number submitted on the same date they should be redirected to a landing page, how would I go about doing this? Searching Google gets me a lot of examples of connection strings, but I can't seem to find a specification of all possibilities in the 'Extended Properties' section of the OleDb connection string. At the moment I've this: Provider = Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source = D:\Data\Customers.xls; Extended Properties = 'Excel 8.0; Mode=Read; ReadOnly=true; HDR=Yes'; However... I've composed this by examples. So questions: 1. What is a decent source for OleDb Connection String documentation/reference? 2. I know how to use the following: BeginInvoke/EndInvoke Calling Application.DoEvents() repeatedly (probably not a good idea) BackgroundWorker etc. But how to manage GUI state with call backs, etc... is not trivial. Are there solutions for this (in the form of patterns or libraries)?
