• Facial recognition/detection PHP or software for photo and video galleries

  I have a very large photo gallery with thousands of similar people, objects, locations, things. The majority of the people in the photos have their own user accounts and avatar photos to match. There are also logical short lists of people potentially in the photo based on additional data available for each photo. I allow users to tag photos with their friends and people they know but an automated process would be better. I've used photo tagger/finder from face.com integrating with Facebook photos and the Google Picasa photo tagger for personal albums also does the same thing and is exactly what I'm looking to do. Is there a PHP script, API for Google Picasa, face.com or other recognition service or any other open source project that provides server-side facial recognition and/or grouping photos by similarity? • IE Security Warning with widgets

  Hey I'm creating an ASP.NET application which uses Facebook Connect and fbml tags. It also uses the LinkedIn widget. When I run this app in any browser, there are no warnings and everything works. However, in IE, a message like this comes up: Security Warning: The current webpage is trying to open a site in your Trusted sites list. Do you want to allow this? Current site:http://www.facebook.com Trusted site:http://localhost (same for LinkedIn.com). I know how to fix this from a client perspective and to stop the security warning showing up. However, is it possible to ensure this message doesn't come up as it could be off putting for users who don't know how to suppress this warning? I haven't tried uploading it to my webhost, so not sure if this message will appear for everyone in production. However, I always get it on my local machine. (None of my pages use SSL, so I don't think that's the issue. I tried using FB's HTTPS urls but that didn't make a difference). Thanks

• Rails: Multiple "has_many through" for the two same models?

However, I need to add another relationship for liking (as in, a User "likes" a Fantasy rather than "has" it... think of Facebook and how you can "like" a wall-post, even though it doesn't "belong" to you... in fact, the Facebook example is almost exactly what I'm aiming for). I gathered that I should make another association, but I'm kinda confused as to how I might use it, or if this is even the right approach. I started by adding the following: class Fantasy < ActiveRecord::Base ... has_many :users, :through => :approvals has_many :approvals, :dependent => :destroy end class User < ActiveRecord::Base ... has_many :fantasies, :through => :approvals has_many :approvals, :dependent => :destroy end class Approval < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :user belongs_to :fantasy end ... but how do I create the association through Approval rather than through Fantasizing? • SEO on a Database Driven Website

  I have a question about a site I'm developing. It is a database driven directory site where people can make a profile and list themselves in one or many area codes and in one or many fields of work. When someone is looking for a person to hire, they enter one or more area codes to look in (or select them with checkboxes) and when the form submits, it saves these as a cookie so the site remembers what location you were searching in. You then narrow down your search by category and field (which are links) and get a listing of all the profiles that match your search. What I am concerned about is this: because a search engine can't type in or select area codes to search in, how is it going to find and index any of the profile pages? It doesn't allow the user to search for people without first selecting an area code, because there's no practical purpose to do so. There would also be no practical purpose from a user experience/usability standpoint of simply having a list of each area code as a link to the categories page, but as far as I know, isn't that the only way for search engines to see every person? How does a site like Facebook accomplish this? There isn't some sort of master directory with a link to ever single Facebook user's profile page, and yet they're often the #1 search result for a person's name.

• Cannot convert object, recieved from ajax call, into a long

  I'm using Asp.Net-Mvc, I have this method in my controller: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult LinkAccount(string site, object id) { return this.Json(id); } Here's the ajax method that calls it: $.post("/Account/LinkAccount", { site: "Facebook", id: FB.Facebook.apiClient.get_session().uid }, function(result) { alert(result); }, "json" ); returning this.Json(id); makes the alert work... it alerts 7128383 (something similar to that). but if I change this.Json(id) to this.Json(Conver.ToInt64(id)); the alert does not fire... Any idea of why I can't convert an object received from an object to a long? I already know changing the LinkAccount method to accept a long instead works just fine. It's just I need it as an object because some other sites I'm linking up have strings for id's rather than longs. UPDATE: I tried running the code on localhost so I could set a breakpoint. First I changed the line return this.Json(Convert.ToInt64(id)); to long idAsLong = Convert.ToInt64(id));. Here's what the debugger is telling me: When I hover over id it says: "id | {string[1]}" and when I press the plus button is shows: "[0] | '7128383'" When I hover over idAsLong, it says: "idAsLong | 0" Why isn't it converting it properly?

• Home_path issue with RoR testing locally on mobile device

  When I use <%= link_to image_tag("foo.png"), home_path %> and display it on my localhost on my iPhone, it's broken. When I inspect on with firebug, the src of the image is http://localhost:3000/images/foo.png thus causing it to break on my iPhone. When I use <img src="/images/foo.png" /> it displays fine on my iPhone. I am pointing to the IP address of my PC running the server of my rails app in Safari. It's loading the text but all the css, JavaScript, and images are missing unless the path is absolute with using the rails default helpers. Is there a way to correct this path issue locally so it's absolute like /images/foo.png instead of http://localhost:3000/images/foo.png. Update CSS file paths are also affected. Instead of just making the path /stylesheets/foo.css, it's http://localhost:3000/stylesheets/foo.css. Update: Solution It's the Facebook plugin changing the asset host to the callback url of my facebook app settings which is currently set to http://localhost:3000/

• Modularizing web applications

  Hey all, I was wondering how big companies tend to modularize components on their page. Facebook is a good example: There's a team working on Search that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc.. There's a team working on the news feed that has its own CSS, javascript, html, etc... ... And the list goes on They cannot all be aware of what everyone is naming their div tags and whatnot, so what's the controller(?) doing to hook all these components in on the final page?? Note: This doesn't just apply to facebook - any company that has separate teams working on separate components has some logic that helps them out. EDIT: Thanks all for the responses, unfortunately I still haven't really found what I'm looking for - when you check out the source code (granted its minified), the divs have UIDs, my guess is that there is a compilation process that runs through and makes each of the components unique, renaming divs and css rules.. any ideas? EDIT 2: Thanks all for contributing your thoughts - the bounty went to the highest upvoted answer. The question was designed to be vague- I think it led to a really interesting discussion. • Managing shared product backlog items across multiple platforms

  I am using TFS 2012 to develop a application that will be available as a website and a mobile application, i.e. Windows Phone, Android, etc. While I've been building up a list of features for this application I've noticed that a lot of them will be available across all platforms and I'm not to sure how to manage them within a product backlog. For example, there will be an option to sign in with a Facebook account and user will be able to do this on website and mobile applications. So my though was I would create a product backlog item "Sign in with Facebook account" and assign it to an area called "Website". I would then create another backlog item, with the same title, but this time assign it to an area called "Windows Phone". Therefore my backlog would have two items, both with the same title, but different areas. The idea is I could assign the "Sign in..." backlog item for the website to one sprint and then assign the "Sign in..." backlog item for Windows Phone to another sprint. Seeing as I'm new using Agile/Scrum would this be considered a viable way of managing a product backlog?

• Cassandra instead of MySQL for social networking app

  I am in the middle of building a new app which will have very similar features to Facebook and although obviously it wont ever have to deal with the likes of 400,000,000 million users it will still be used by a substantial user base and most of them will demand it run very very quickly. I have extensive experience with MySQL but a social app offers complexities which MySQL is not well suited too. I know Facebook, Twitter etc have moved towards Cassandra for a lot of their data but I am not sure how far to go with it. For example would you store such things as user data - username, passwords, addresses etc in Cassandra? Would you store e-mails, comments, status updates etc in Cassandra? I have also read alot that something like neo4j is much better for representing the friend relationships used by social apps as it is a graph database. I am only just starting down the NoSQL route so any guidance is greatly appreciated. Would anyone be able to advise me on this? I hope I am not being too general!

• What makes you trust that a piece of open source software is not malicious?

  We developers are in a unique position when it comes to the ability to not only be skeptical about the capabilities provided by open source software, but to actively analyze the code since it is freely available. In fact, one may even argue that open source software developers have a social responsibility to do so to contribute to the community. But at what point do you as a developer say, "I better take a look at what this is doing before I trust using it" for any given thing? Is it a matter of trusting code with your personal information? Does it depend on the source you're getting it from? What spurred this question on was a post on Hacker News to a javascript bookmarklet that supposedly tells you how "exposed" your information on Facebook is as well as recommending some fixes. I thought for a second "I'd rather not start blindly running this code over all my (fairly locked down) Facebook information so let me check it out". The bookmarklet is simple enough, but it calls another javascript function which at the time (but not anymore) was highly compressed and undecipherable. That's when I said "nope, not gonna do it". So even though I could have verified the original uncompressed javascript from the Github site and even saved a local copy to verify and then run without hitting their server, I wasn't going to. It's several thousand lines and I'm not a total javascript guru to begin with. Yet, folks are using it anyway. Even (supposedly) bright developers. What makes them trust the script? Did they all scrutinize it line by line? Do they know the guy personally and trust him not to do anything bad? Do they just take his word? What makes you trust that a piece of open source software is not malicious?

• ZEND - Creating custom routes without overwriting the default ones

  I'm trying to create something that looks like facebook's profile URL (http://facebook.com/username). So, at first I tried something like that: $router->addRoute( 'eventName', new Zend_Controller_Router_Route( '/:eventName', array( 'module' => 'default', 'controller' => 'event', 'action' => 'detail' ) ) ); I kept getting the following error: Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'Zend_Controller_Router_Exception' with message 'eventName is not specified' in /var/desenvolvimento/padroes/zf/ZendFramework-1.12.0/library/Zend/Controller/Plugin/Broker.php on line 336 Not only I was unable to make that piece of code work, all my default routes were (obviously) overwritten. So I have, for example, stuff like "mydomain.com/admin", that was now returning the same error (as it fell in the same pattern as /:eventName). What I need to do is to create this custom route, without overwriting the default ones and actually working (dûh). I have already checked the online docs and a lot (A LOT) of stuff on google, but I didn't find anything related to the error I'm getting or how to not overwrite the default routes. I'd appreciate anything that could point me the right direction. Thanks.

• Automated generation of the "What's new in this version" reading

  We all know it - this is the reading that lists the changes brought by each new version of our favorite software. Whenever it comes bundled as a file (Changes.txt, CHANGES, WhatsNew.txt, etc) or is presented within an installer this is usually the first thing we read before installing/updating. On a current project we have a Changelog.txt file that gets updated by hand every time a notable change occurs. However this often leads to "I forgot to update the changelog". So I am looking for a way to automate this. I am thinking of a script that extracts the changes from our commit messages (using a convention) and generates the file. For example a commit message like Updated json-glib to 0.7.6 [changes] - Fix crash on Windows - Fix issues with facebook contacts with very large UIDs. Would produce the following Changes.txt Version 1.9.18 (03/10/2010) Fix crash on Windows Fix issues with facebook contacts with very large UIDs. Does anyone know a better solution/tool for this or am I going to write my own? Thanks!

There is another option that requires you to login to my site from your site and have your profile within your site. This is because you might already have a site that your clients know you with.
