• OSX Mail.app send only plaintext but read as html

  I get email which seems properly plaintext formatted, but when I forward it out, the font size ends up being enormous and a few other formatting stupidities. So I tried the following: defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText -bool TRUE And this works great, all outgoing email regardless of the text original is plaintext only, just the way I like it. But now for incoming email only the plaintext portions are available to read without going into View - Message - Raw Source (or something similar to that). Does anyone know how I can force only outgoing mail to include only plaintext, but continue to read incoming mail in the formatting it was intended?

• Is there a way to disable specific Spybot Immunization rules?

  I've been having problems using a desktop sharing application, which I've traced to the Immunization protections applied via Spybot S&D. Specifically, the problem has been narrowed down to the rules in the \SOFTWARE (Plugins) categories under the Internet Explorer groups. Once I disable these Immunization categories, everything in the application works fine. Each of these categories appears to include ~900 protections on the system. I suspect that the root cause of my problems could be narrowed down to just one, or perhaps a handful, of the settings that get applied in these categories. However, I can't find any options in Spybot S&D which would allow me to drill down to the individual protection rules and choose which to enable or disable. Is there something I'm missing, or is this not a feature available via the GUI? If it's not strictly supported in the application, is there a way to work around it by manually editing some of its files or registry settings? • Why does the command forfiles list files that are not a day old despite the command being otherwise?

  The command I am executing is forfiles -p"C:\testdata" -m*.* -d-1 -c"cmd /c echo @PATH\@FILE" I have specified that I wish to only list files that are a day old however when I execute the statement, it returns me a list of files that were created today. Why is that? Am I doing something wrong? Would it be better to specify a time period as opposed to a date e.g. 24 hours? The version of forfiles I have reads as follows FORFILES v 1.1 - [email protected] - 4/98. The batch file is being run on Windows XP.

• Handout export to word from PowerPoint are too big :(

  EDITED i am using power point lectures. i want to mail merge speaker data into the respective lecture. now thats not possible with ppt as far i know, so i have to convert these lectures to handout by using power point option "publishMS word handouts" and use word mail merger. this is good since it will keep the comments/notes added in slides in handouts aswell. but these exported handouts in word remain actual slides and retain link to original ppt rather than simply get exported as images. so the file size gets verrry big 10mb ppt = 212mb doc=88mb docx Is there any option to convert handouts exported from power point to word as images? i simply cant save them as pngs from powerpoint since that will not include the comments data.   Earlier, I wrote about Powerful Data Lessons from the Presidential Election. A key component of the Obama team’s data analysis deserves its own discussion—the people. Recruiters are probably scrambling to find out who those Obama data crunchers are and lure them into corporations. For the Obama team, these data scientists became a secret ingredient that the competition didn’t have. This team of analysts knew how to hear the signal and ignore the noise, how to segment and target its base, and how to model scenarios and revise plans based on what the data told them. The talent was the difference. As you work to transform your organization to be more customer-centric, don’t forget that talent is a critical element. Journey mapping is a good start to understanding how your talent impacts your customer experiences. Part of journey mapping includes documenting the “on-stage” and “back-stage” systems and touchpoints. When mapping this part of your customers’ journey, include the roles and talent behind the employee actions—both customer facing and further upstream from that customer touchpoint. Know what each of these roles does, how well you are retaining people in these areas, and your plans to fill these open positions in the future. To use data scientists as an example, this job will be in high demand over the next 10 years. The workforce is shrinking, and higher education institutions may not be able to turn out trained data scientists as fast as you need them. You don’t want to be caught with a skills deficit, so consider how you can best plan for the future talent you will need. Have your existing employees make their career aspirations known to you now. You may find you already have employees willing to take on roles that drive better customer experiences. Then develop customer experience talent from within your organization through targeted learning programs. If you know that you will need to go outside the organization, build those candidate relationships now. Nurture the candidates you want to hire and partner with universities, colleges, and trade associations so you can increase the number of qualified candidates in your talent pool.

• How do I draw a dotted or dashed line?

  I'm trying to draw a dashed or dotted line by placing individual segments(dashes) along a path and then separating them. The only algorithm I could come up with for this gave me a dash length that was variable based on the angle of the line. What I would like is for the dash length to be the same no matter what angle the line is. As is, it's just adding 75 thousandths of the line length to the x and y, so if the line is and a 45 degree angle you get pretty much a solid line. If the line is at something shallow like 85 degrees then you get a nice looking dashed line. So, the dash length is variable, and I don't want that. How would I make a function that I can pass a "dash length" into and get that length of dash, no matter what the angle is? If you need to completely disregard my code, be my guest. I'm sure there's a better solution.

  hi, I'm trying to install the newest version of apache on my centos server. I did the following: Download $ wget http://httpd.apache.org/path/to/latest/version/ Extract $ gzip -d httpd-2_0_NN.tar.gz $ tar xvf httpd-2_0_NN.tar Configure $ ./configure Compile $ make Install $ make install Test $ PREFIX/bin/apachectl start And that all worked except the last step, when i type apachectl start it says 'command not found'. I ran this command from /usr/local/apache2/bin/ where it is installed but no cigar. Any idea what i am doing wrong? Thanks.

• Scanning php uploads in tmp directory with clamdscan fails

  I can't seem to get this thing to work, some permission problem maybe, but i can't even run clamdscan normally form console with root the result is always Permission denied. for example i create a file test.txt (eicar file) in /tmp and execute "clandscan /tmp/test.txt" in console logged in as root and i get "/tmp/test.txt: Access denied. ERROR ". The clamd demon is running with user clamav could that be the reason? Now i want to scan the same file (/tmp/test.txt) via php , so i run (i have chowned the file to apache:apache ) $cmd="clamdscan /tmp/test.txt"; exec($cmd,$a,$b); i get error 127 i try with the full path of the command /usr/bin/clamdscan i get error 126 (command is found but is not executable), this means that apache doesn't have the permission to execute /usr/bin/clamdscan ? what could be the problem?

• Transparently cache files from a network drive in Linux

  We have a Linux server that reads files from a network drive and processes them. In a common scenario, a user will log in and access the same files over and over again. The size of the files varies but the larger ones can be around 50+ Mb. The files seldom change. I was wondering if it's somehow possible to transparently cache the files. I don't want (or can) change the program the reads the files, nor do I control the protocol by which the files are accessed. I just want something to detect that I access a certain path, copy the file locally (if needed) and then read the file from the local drive. I've read about Bcache but can't figure out if it's what I need. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks, Vadim.

• Windows 7 - Home Drive Map Fails

  Server 2003 SP2 (not R2) with 2 new Win 7 Pro workstations. Home Drive is set in AD (not GP) to map to \\server\users\username. Home Drive map fails, other network drives map correctly. No error logged on server or PC, Win 7 shows "Could not reconnect all network drives." There is no Y: (Home Drive) listed, either in the GUI or via Net Use. Manual map via batch file in startup group with the same path works correctly? Home Drive map works correctly on XP workstations.

• yum install gcc fails with invalid linux.dropbox.com/fedora directory

  I am relatively new to Linux administration. I have installed Centos 6.5 (under VirtualBox on a Win7pro system).   I am going to install and administrate a virtual server for a small university. The server should run inside a virtual machine (VirtualBox OSE). It is only used in the university network and is invisible to the outside world. It should run Apache web server for PHP, MySQL and probably a mail server. I don't know which OS to use. Main criteria for choosing include ease of administration and updating, package management and performance. I wonder if anyone has any suggestions? And candidate OSs are: Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Slackware, FreeBSD, OpenSolaris. Add any other OS if you know any better alternatives.

• Best way to lay-out the website when sections of it are almost identical

  so, I have a minisite for the mobile application that I did. The mobile application is a public transport (transit) schedule viewer for a particular city (let's call it Foo), and I'm trying to sell it via that minisite. I publish that minisite in www.myawesomeapplication.com/foo/. It has the usual "standard" subpages, like "About", "Compatible phones", "Contact", etc. Now, I have decided to create analogue mobile application for other cities, Bar and Baz. These mobile applications (products) would be almost identical to the one for the Foo city, thus the minisites for those would (should) look very similar too (except for some artwork and Foo = Bar replacement). The question is: what do you think would be the most logical way to lay-out the website in this situation, both from the business and search engine perspective? In other words, should I just duplicate the /foo/ website to /bar/ and /baz/, or would it be better to try to create a single website under root path (/)? I don't want search engine penalties for almost-duplicate information under /foo/, /bar/ and /baz/, and also I don't want a messy, non-localized website (I guess the user is more likely to buy something if he/she sees "This-and-that is the application for NYC, the city you live in", not "This-and-that is the application for city A, city B, ..., NYC, ..., and city Z.")

• What is a "Technical Programmer"? [closed]

  I've noticed in job posting boards a few postings, all from European companies in the games industry, for a "Technical Programmer". The job description in both was similar, having to do with tools development, 3d graphics programming, etc. It seems to be somewhere between a Technical Artist who's more technical than artist or who can code, and a Technical Director but perhaps without the seniority/experience. Information elsewhere on the position is sparse. The title seems redundant and I haven't seen any American companies post jobs by that name exactly. One example is this job posting on gamedev.net which isn't exactly thorough. In case the link dies: Subject: Technical Programmer Frictional Games, the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra series, are looking for a talented programmer to join the company! You will be working for a small team with a big focus on finding new and innovating solutions. We want you who are not afraid to explore uncharted territory and constantly learn new things. Self-discipline and independence are also important traits as all work will be done from home. Some the things you will work with include: 3D math, rendering, shaders and everything else related. Console development (most likely Xbox 360). Hardware implementations (support for motion controls, etc). All coding is in C++, so great skills in that is imperative. As I mentioned, the job title has appeared from European companies so maybe it goes by another title in America. What other titles might this specialization of programmer go by?

• Meaning of tcp_delack_min

  Hi, the current Linux Kernel (e.g. 2.6.36) uses Delayed Acknowledgments (delack). In /include/net/tcp.h it says: define TCP_DELACK_MIN ((unsigned)(HZ/25)) So, for a Kernel using a HZ value of 1000, an ACK should be delayed by a minimum of 40 ms. However, RFC 2581 says a TCP implementation should acknowledge every second full sized segment without further delay. Does anybody know whether the Linux Kernel follows that 'should' or whether the TCP_DELACK_MIN value means that even after a full sized segment was received, the ACK continues to be delayed until 40 ms have passed?

• Why not install Msvcr71.dll into system32?

  While looking for an authoritative source for the missing Msvcr71.dll that is needed by a few old applications, I stumbled across the MSDN article Redistribution of the shared C runtime component in Visual C++. The advice given to developers is to drop the DLL into the application's directory instead of system32 since DLLs in this directory are considered before the system paths. What can/will go wrong if I (as an administrator, not a developer) decide to take the lazy path and install Msvcr71.dll (and Msvcp71.dll while I'm at it) into the system32 directory (of 32 bit Windows XP or Windows 7 systems) instead of putting a copy in each application's directory? Is there another good solution to provide the applications with the needed DLLs that doesn't involve copying stuff to the application directories? added after first answers: I understand that incompatible API changes may have been made to the mentioned DLLs, but pretty much every mention of incompatibilities I have found using Google had to do with games or video codecs. Right now, I expect that the risk of breakage is pretty small. Am I missing something?

• I have an MIS degree. How do I sell myself as a programmer?

  So, I graduated with a BSBA in Management Information Systems with honors almost 2 years ago which is more of a business degree. As of right now, I do have a job title of "Programmer", but it's more of a report writing position in an arbitrary, proprietary language called PowerOn with the occasional interesting project using more mainstream technologies like .Net and Java. I am also somewhat isoloated being the only programmer in the workplace, which I beleive is a detriment to my career path. The only people I have to bounce ideas against are those on the various SE sites. I don't regret going MIS, but over the past couple of years I have discovered my passion for coding, even though I have been doing some form of coding profesionally and as an enthusiast for years. I do want to persue my Masters in CS (at a later time), but I am not sure if I necessarily need a CS degree to get in with a team of programmers. In addition, I do have a number classes I have taken for different laguanges on the way (C++, Java, SQL, and VB.Net) I beleive my strength is in problem solving where code is just a tool to tackling to problem if needed. My question: How do I best sell myself as a programmer? Should I continue pounding out reports and wait till I have my masters in CS? Or am I viable to be a programmer as I stand?

• What's Excel formats are (most) compatible with LibreOffice and Google Docs?

  I use Excel (and occasionally Numbers), but I want to be able to share with users of Google Docs and LibreOffice (and I may want to switch in the future). What's the most compatible format to save my Excel spreadsheets in? I'm asking as a question here rather than merely Googling for a list of formats that LibreOffice and GoogleDocs support (although I'm doing that too, and will post the answer if no one else does) because there are likely to be hidden "gotchas" that only someone who has experience using all of the above applications is going to know about. Answers that include personal experience will be preferred over those that only post a link to the relevant facts on google.com and libreoffice.com. Oh, and of course the other reason I'm asking the question is because it's good to have this info readily available on SuperUser.com for anyone else who wants to know the same thing.
