• Ubuntu 12.04 fresh install wont boot up

  im running ubuntu 12.04 and it refuses to boot up. the screen will come on for a second, the mosue will appear, then itll go black again all inside about 3 seconds. i let it just do that for a while and eventually a window popped up saying i had a display issue. I didn't have a mouse but there was a button saying "ok" at the bottom that i couldnt click on. i hit enter, got through that screen, now im looking at another that says "What would you like to do?" - run in low-graphics mode for just one session - reconfigure graphics - troubleshoot the error - exit to console login then two buttons, cancel, and ok. I dont have a mouse and its not letting me navigate between these options with tab. firstly, if i make it through these windows will it get me into the computer so i can try and fix whats going on? also, whats going on here? also, how can i click on these buttons without the use of tab or a mouse?

• Ubuntu cannot see Windows 7 partitions on install

  I've been trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510. It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux. The issue I'm having is that when I run Ubuntus installer by booting from CD it sees the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have also tried Kbuntu 10.10, Fedora 14, booting a Gparted 0.8.0 usb drive, and Ubuntu "install in Windows" with wubi they all have problems. EDIT: When I run the "try Ubuntu" option on booting from cd it can mount my Windows partition and I can view the files. The output of sudo parted -l when running in try Ubuntu mode: Warning: /dev/sda contains GPT signatures, indicating that it has a GPT table. However, it does not have a valid fake msdos partition table, as it should. Perhaps it was corrupted -- possibly by a program that doesn't understand GPT partition tables. Or perhaps you deleted the GPT table, and are now using an msdos partition table. Is this a GPT partition table? • What service or software should I use to serve advertising on a site with about 120k monthly page views?

  I have a site that is generating about 120k monthly page views and is being hosted on a shared FreeBSD server where I have access to PHP and MySQL. I am using some custom PHP server-side scripts that give each of my ad networks (AdSense, Tribal Fusion, etc) an adjustable percentage of impressions in each of the ad positions on my pages. I am looking for a better way of managing and measuring the delivery of these ads, and would also like to be able to take direct placements and provide statistics to the clients. I am looking at options including OpenX self-hosted, OpenX community, and Google DoubleClick for Publishers Small Business (DFP), but am having difficulty determining which one will best meet my needs. They all seem to have pretty steep learning curves compared to my simple scripts. What I have taken away so far as the benefit of self-hosting is that I don't have to pay for the service if I exceed a maximum number of ad impressions, while both OpenX Community and DFP have free impression limits. Of course, if I was doing those kind of numbers I'd need to upgrade my hosting account, but I'm not sure even at that point whether it would be cheaper to serve the ads myself than pay for a premium service. Apart from this, I really need insights into what features differentiate these services, why I might want to choose one over another, and if there are any other competing products or service of the same quality that I should look into. Answers from webmasters who have used both (or all three) services and can talk to usability and ease of ad management would be highly appreciated.

• Will Ubuntu Live CD move MFT to resize NTFS volumes?

  I have a feeling some will consider this a duplicate, but please hear me out. I've been reading tons of questions and threads around this but have never really found an answer for this specifically. I want to shrink my NTFS partition to make room for a Ubuntu install, so I can dual boot them. However when shrinking the NTFS volume in Windows disk management, it will only go so far as the MFT is sitting near the end of the volume. I've read plenty of posts about why it does this, and how difficult/dangerous it is to move the MFT etc. I've also read that Perfect Disk can apparently do it under it's trial period, but I remain cautious to try this method. I was wondering however if the disk partitioning utility included in the Ubuntu install wizard handles the moving of the MFT when dragging the partition boundaries. It all seems too simple that you simply tell it the new size you want it to be. Would it tell me if it couldn't resize by the amount you requested if the MFT was an issue, or move it for you if it were able. I'm concerned it might corrupt the MFT and the volume, even though I doubt the install wizard would be so daft. So what exactly is the deal with the partition resizing tool in the Ubuntu install wizard? Will it safely resize my NTFS volume despite the location of my MFT? Thanks in advance.

• Ubuntu 11.10 very slow compared to Windows

  I'm new to Ubuntu/linux. Since my PC is very old and not very fast with Windows 7, I decided to give Ubuntu a try, so I downloaded and installed Ubuntu 11.10 today. When I first started it, I had bad 800x600 resolution and it was very slow and annoying. So I installed a driver for my graphic card and now everything looks very nice (1280x1024).But I think it's still far slower than Windows 7. I tried to run in Ubuntu like a few people suggested on the forum but if I log in I get a black screen saying something like "this video mode cannot be displayed". I get that same screen when booting Ubuntu btw, but after about 15 seconds it disappears and just starts Ubuntu. I also installed other drivers for my graphic card but everything stayed the same. I noticed that i.e. when I open Firefox or system settings it takes about 5 seconds till it opens (while Windows 7 takes under 1 second to start i.e. Chrome) and when I do this my CPU usage gets to 100% for a short time. Computer specs: Memory: 2GB RAM Processor: Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce 6800 400MHz. I read on various forums that 11.04 works flawless on many PCs, where 11.10 is very slow. Should I install 11.04 or could anybody help me with this problem?

• Resized Ubuntu 14.04 partition will not boot

  First, a little background info: I intended to install Ubuntu alongside OS X, but I accidentally erased my entire hard drive and was left with Ubuntu alone. Yesterday, I finally tried to create a desperate partition and OS X. I successfully shrank my Ubuntu partition and created ~40 GB of free space. I used gparted to do this. At first I tried to use Internet Recovery to install OS X on the unallocated space I had created, but discovered I couldn't. I went back to gparted and created a FAT partition with that space. I'm pretty sure I actually did this using my Ubuntu partition on my hard drive (the one I had just shrunken), rather than the USB live boot I had used to shrink it. Therefore, at this point, I think my Ubuntu partition was still functioning properly. I went back to internet recovery and used disk utility to turn the FAT partition into a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) [HFS/HFS+] partition. I believe this is probably where the problem occurred. I successfully reinstalled OS X and found it to be fully functioning. However, when I tried to boot back into the Ubuntu partition all I got was a black screen with a little white cursor (it looks similar to a terminal screen/the Mac DFU mode, but I can't type anything into it. Is there anything I can do to repair my Ubuntu partition? If not, can I at least recover the data from it? Thank you for any help.

  My company's head of software development just "resigned" (i.e. fired) and we are now looking into improving the development practices at our company. We want to implement unit testing in all software created from here on out. Feedback from the developers is this: We know testing is valuable But, you are always changing the specs so it'd be a waste of time And, your deadlines are so tight we don't have enough time to test anyway Feedback from the CEO is this: I would like our company to have automated testing, but I don't know how to make it happen We don't have time to write large specification documents How do developers get the specs now? Word of mouth or PowerPoint slide. Obviously, that's a big problem. My suggestion is this: Let's also give the developers a set of test data and unit tests That's the spec. It's up to management to be clear and quantitative about what it wants. The developers can put it whatever other functionality they feel is needed and it need not be covered by tests Well, if you've ever been in a company that was in this situation, how did you solve the problem? Does this approach seem reasonable?

• Best setup/workflow for distributed team to integrated DSVC with fragmented huge .NET site?

  So we have a team with 2 developers one manager. The dev server sits in a home office and the live server sits in a rack somewhere handled by the larger part of my company. We have freedom to do as we please but I want to incorporate Kiln DSVC and FogBugz for us with some standard procedures to make sense of our decisions/designs/goals. Our main product is web-based training through our .NET site with many videos etc, and we also do mobile apps for multiple platforms. Our code-base is a 15 yr old fragmented mess. The approach has been rogue .asp/.aspx pages with some class management implemented in the last 6 years. We still mix our html/vb/js all on the same file when we add a feature/page to our site. We do not separate the business logic from the rest of the code. Wiring anything up in VS for Intelli-sense or testing or any other benefit is more frustrating than it is worth, because of having to manually rejigger everything back to one file. How do other teams approach this? I noticed when I did wire everything up for VS it wants to make a class for all functions. Do people normally compile DLLs for page-specific functions that won't be reusable? What approaches make sense for getting our practices under control while still being able to fix old anti-patterns and outdated code and still moving towards a logical structure for future devs to build on?

• How can I speed up boot on one of my machines?

  I have a Gateway all in one machine (2 gig Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 dual core processor, 2 gig RAM - full specs) on which I installed 10.10. Once it has booted it's fine, but it takes forever to boot. This is what happens: 1. Boot starts with cursor flashing for about 10-15 seconds 2. Cursor disappears for 1.5 - 2 minutes 3. Cursor reappears, blinks a few seconds more, boot finishes in another 10 seconds 4. Login screen I have another machine with marginal better specs that boots up in no time (basically the above minus the two minute delay). Things I've done: enabled verbose mode for grub nothing is showing until after 2 minute pause. checked syslog last message before pause is a message from alsa saying the process is already running (or something similar... going from memory here...) It could be something sound related as the built in speakers are not working (sound card is recognized though and headphones work). Anyway, it's not the end of the world, but it's annoying and I'd like to know what's going on... Many thanks, and let me know if more info is needed.

• How many tasks to plan beforehand [closed]

  As for my daily routine. Every morning when I come to work, I look at the items of my todo-list inbox (noted from the previous day). For each task I think about on which day I should get started and then group them accordingly. Once that's finished, I get started with my actual schedule for the day. Now, this pre-planning for each task (which could be concerning user interface to compiler programming) is mostly pretty sketchy. Serious thoughts about design and implementation comes when the task is about to be tackled. This approach works for me and I can't really complain. But I'm wondering. Since I'm personally most productive during the morning, would it make sense to already go into a deeper level of planning right away for each task? Or is that unproductive and would rather confuse than clarify? I think the latter. How do you handle your task management for each task / project and how far do you go with planning before even getting started with that item?

• Oneric Aspire One. After latest 11.10 update to Linux 3.0.0-9 boot hangs at staement "Starting Bluetooth"

  I have today updated the version of Linux on Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire One. The boot hangs on the statement "Starting Bluetooth". Help please!! EDIT1: I get the grub menu when I start the netbook and it doesn´t matter which version of linux I choose the resulkt is the same. It gets as far as the Ubuntu spash screen then drops into command line mode then hangs on the line "Starting Bluetooth". I can log in and have tried various forms of the apt-get command to fix the system but with no result. I do not need bluetooth at the moment and so could remove the application if I knew how. (have tried apt-get remove bluez). When I use the command sudo apt-get -f install I get an error message saying "There's not enough space in /var/lib/mysql/" folowed by several other error messages. I have spent some time looking for similar problems and solutions using google but so far got to nothing to help. Thanks EDIT2: I have since discovered when running Knoppix or slitaz from a usb stick that the file managers report the hard disc as having no space. However GPARTED reports it as having 3.69gb. I do recall making space on the hard drive by deleting some old files and emptying trash whilst the update was running; perhaps its related. Any suggestions for how I can recover the apparently lost space from hard disc without losing the data. I have backups of the actual data but do not wnat to lose the applcations configuration. • On Developing Web Services with Global State

  I'm new to web programming. I'm more experienced and comfortable with client-side code. Recently, I've been dabbling in web programming through Python's Google App Engine. I ran into some difficulty while trying to write some simple apps for the purposes of learning, mainly involving how to maintain some kind of consistent universally-accessible state for the application. I tried to write a simple queueing management system, the kind you would expect to be used in a small clinic, or at a cafeteria. Typically, this is done with hardware. You take a number from a ticketing machine, and when your number is displayed or called you approach the counter for service. Alternatively, you could be given a small pager, which will beep or vibrate when it is your turn to receive service. The former is somewhat better in that you have an idea of how many people are still ahead of you in the queue. In this situation, the global state is the last number in queue, which needs to be updated whenever a request is made to the server. I'm not sure how to best to store and maintain this value in a GAE context. The solution I thought of was to keep the value in the Datastore, attempt to query it during a ticket request, update the value, and then re-store it with put. My problem is that I haven't figured out how to lock the resource so that other requests do not check the value while it is in the middle of being updated. I am concerned that I may end up ticket requests that have the same queue number. Also, the whole solution feels awkward to me. I was wondering if there was a more natural way to accomplish this without having to go through the Datastore. Can anyone with more experience in this domain provide some advice on how to approach the design of the above application?

• Can I legally make a free clone of a game and use the same name? [closed]

  I gather from Is it legally possible to make a clone of the game? and How closely can a game resemble another game without legal problems that I should not try to profit from a clone if it is using the same assets, and, I presume, the same name. My question is whether it's legal to make a game like "Set" or "Catch Phrase", using the same name, and release it for free. What would I be risking if I did so -- just a take down notice, or could there be financial risk too? Edit: I guess my real question is whether the legal freedom is greater for a free game than one that is trying to make a profit. I just want a version of the game I can play remotely. Edit 2: I don't understand why this is being considered off-topic. I read the FAQ and it says it'S OK to ask questions about project management, which includes Publishing. And naming a game is a key aspect to publishing. That's what my question is about - choosing a legal name for my game with the consideration that I might post/publish it.

• 12.04 LTS Apache2 writing files from webpage at runtime has no effect - possible read/write permissions?

  I'm running 12.04LTS with Apache and Mono in VirtualBox, with the goal of hosting a web app (coded in ASP.NET and C#) on my local network. The scripts on the page are able to successfully read from text files in the same directory as my site (/var/www/mysite/) but do not seem to be able to write. I'm sure the code works, because it did with my testing in Visual Web Developer on Windows. I don't get any errors, but when I click the button on the loaded webpage, the text file in question does not change. I'm fairly new to Linux in general, so I'm not too familiar with how to set permissions properly, and it may be a permissions issue. Unfortunately, I have searched all over the internet and haven't found a solution that worked, but I've tried (perhaps incorrectly) changing the owner of the files in question to www-root, changing the mode to a+rw, but sadly to no avail. I have tried everything here but it doesn't work: Whats the simplest way to edit and add files to "/var/www"? I hope someone can help me out.

• SunSpace - a sentimental moment

  I just came back from California where I had a little sentimental moment.With the great help from some former Sun colleagues we move the old SunSpace gear into a new data center in Santa Clara.We will re-purpose the hardware as a new development infrastructure to build integrated demos around Oracle WebCenter products, Business Applications and Social Services. now - I could not resist to restart the SunSpace applications and see if it still works. And hey - even though we had to re-IP the entire  stack (sun.com domain is gone) and with some little hacking (thanks to Apache reverse proxy) -  we got it back! Hey Max - now I just need to change your SSO hack to get login working again Hmm - I won't - but it is really nice to see it working again .. and it's time to switch it off and to work  on the next cool things .. Do you know Oracle WebCenter Sites (formely Fatwire)? Its Oracle's Web Experience Management Solution - a pretty cool technology and a very slick User Interface. I specially like the drag&drop functionality which allows non technical users to easily publish content.  Why do I mention it here ?  Because we will use the SunSpace gear to build cool  Oracle WebCenter Sites demos and proof of concepts integration  into Business Applications and Social Services  This is a sneak preview what we are working on. You have to take the time to get the requirements right.  Be honest with all involved parties as to the amount of time it is taking to refine the requirements.  The only thing worse than wrong requirements is a surprise in budget overages.  If you give open visibility to your progress then management has the ability to shift priorities if needed. In order to capture the best requirements use different approaches to help your stakeholders to articulate their needs.  Use mock ups and matrix spread sheets to allow them to visualize and confirm that everyone has the same understanding.  The goals isn’t to record every last detail, but to have the major landmarks identified so there are fewer surprises along the way. Help the team members to understand that you all have the same goal.  You want to create the best possible solution for the given business problem.  If you do this everyone involved will do there best to outline a picture of what is to be built and you will be able to design an appropriate solution to fill those needs more easily. • Top down or bottom up approach?

  this is the closest I think I can get to define my problem. I'm an interface designer and now I'm working with a team of programmers to develop a new CMS for a heavy media site. I'm sorry if it's a very, very dumb question to ask here, but I really need some help. As I've started developing a specification list for a prototype it turned out a very big one. I do realize now that the client-side will be JS heavy, with lots of DnD and other "cool designer stuff". The CMS will even include a small project management system for its users, nothing big like Basecamp, but with a live feed of comments etc. The problem is the the team has now separated. Someone is proposing the existing backend solution used in other CMS, someone is proposing to rewrite everything from scratch. The point to keep the code is that it is faster, the point to rewrite is to make it better for the proposed design (include Node.js and other stuff I don't actually get). The question is — can the UI specs influence back-end? The guys that propose to use the existing solution did everything with the Yii framework (as far as I know), and they say that everything on server is not affected by this "interface coolness". Others say that it does, that even autosave can't work without server load. Please, if this is really incomprehensible, again, I'm sorry, and I'll happy to clarify it after your questions. • Why is heap size fixed on JVMs?

  Can anyone explain to me why JVMs (I didn't check too many, but I've never seen one that didn't do it that way) need to run on a fixed heap size? I know it's easier to implement on a simple contiguous heap, but the Sun JVM is now over a decade old, so I'd expect them to have had time to improve this. Needing to define the maximum memory size of your program at startup time seems such a 1960s thing to do, and then there are the bad interactions with OS virtual memory management (GC retrieving swapped out data, inability to determine how much memory the Java process is really using from the OS side, huge amounts of VM space wasted (I know, you don't care on your fancy 48bit machines...)). I also guess that the various sad attempts to build small operating systems inside the JVM (EE application servers, OSGi) are at least partially to blame on this circumstance, because running multiple Java processes on a system invariably leads to wasted resources because you have to give each of them the memory it might have to use at peak. Surprisingly, Google didn't yield the storms of outrage over this that I would expect, but they may just have been buried under the millions of people finding out about fixed heap size and just accepting it for a fact.

• Ubuntu installer shows three small screens

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu (or Kubuntu, which I tried first) 13.04 on a new laptop. I need the install in UEFI mode in order to properly dual boot with Windows 8. I've managed to overcome most of the UEFI issues up to the installer, which appeared as a black screen until I used nomodeset. Now the installer will appear, however it does fit my screen size. Instead, it appears as three small identical screens across the top of the monitor. I thought the problem could be solved by changing the display resolution in GRUB via changing the vga number, but this simply expanded the width of the three screens. While I could install it at this point, the identical screens are too small for me to be able to read the installer. As well, the "Try Ubuntu" option simply gets stuck at a black screen. I'm afraid these problems may persist through the installation if I attempted to continue. • Hosting and scaling a Facebook application in the cloud? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? We would be building a Facebook application in Django (Python), but still not sure of where to host it economically, and with a good provision to scale in case the app gets viral. Some details about the app: Would be HTML based like a website,using django as a framework. 100K is the number of expected pageviews in a day, if the app is viral. The users will not generate any media content, only some database data will be generated by them. It would be great if someone with more experience can guide on following points: A) Hosting on Google app engine or Amazon EC2 or some other cloud like RackSpace : Preferable points found in AppEngine were ease of deployment, cost effectiveness and easy scaling. For EC2: Full hold of the virtual machine,Amazon NoSQL and RDMBS database services in case we decide to use them. B) Does backend technology affect monthly cost? eg. would CPU and memory usage difference of Django over , for example , PHP framework like CodeIgnitor really make remarkable difference in running costs. • cannot log in to all account except guest after mounting new partition

  I really really need help. to do my homework from school, since two days ago, I was installing oracle 11g on my ubuntu. through that process, there was lots of problems also, but searching a lot, in somehow I could go to the next phase installing it. (because it was the first time to install on ubuntu by myself..) but when I was making password for oracle and clicked next, it says there are not enough space for home/oracle folder, So to make another space, I mounted another space after checking Gparted and using Software device management, I mounted it. And when I rebooted it, since then, I cannot log in to my own administrator account and even to oracle account(that I made for oracle 11g on ubuntu ) when I type the passwords for it, it seems to work but it redisplay the first page to log in, without really logging in it.. So I loggined to here as guest account... and even I cannot try gnome console manipulation to restore or fix it.. because it is guest account... I`m struggling for three days and... help me, how do I need to do? and at the time oracle said it needs enough space for its home folder, how I should have done?
