• Managing Personal Projects As Solo Developer - Getting out of depth and failing projects

  I need some advice on project management. I start a project, and often times it will a large project for a solo developer. Usually its a web project. I handle everything from the UI, to the JS, PHP, server management etc. Half way in I feel out of my depth. I lose where I am, so I spend a couple of days away from the project to avoid the stress and before you know it, it becomes another unfinished project. I try to use frameworks and code libraries to make my developments easier on myself. Sometimes I will complete a project so it "works" and then go back and handle errors, design the UI properly and stuff. But without fail I will always end up out of my depth. I've though about outsourcing tasks such as the UI, and the behaviour, and focusing just on the PHP - which I feel is my strong point. But then pride kicks in, and I don't feel at one with a project I haven't completed myself. Does this make sense? I am sure there are many others who have felt like this either at home, or at work, and I would love some advice on managing my projects better.

• intermittent DNS problems

  How would I go about tracking this issue down? One of my websites has been up for years without issue. We're using Godaddy's nameservers for our domain. Lately in the past two weeks, I've noticed that once from home on my Cox cable connection, I could not connect to the site... it said the domain could not be resolved. I checked downforeveryoneorjustme.com, and it said it was fine. The "outage" lasted maybe five minutes (through a reboot too, and I'm on a mac FWIW) and then it started working again. Then it happened again this week, but from our office on a different Cox connection. Then it happened again from the office, but for a different domain. I called Cox during one outage, and the tech there could resolve the domain without a problem. When these outages are occurring, I can issue "host mydomain.com" and get "domain not found", but using "host mydomain.com 8.8.8.8" will resolve normally. Where do I start? We're getting reports now that our customers are experiencing it too.

• Formatting HTML lists using CSS

  I'm trying to recreate list in HTML which has clauses and subclauses like this: 1. Main Clause (a) Sub clause (b) Sub clause 2. Another main clause (a) Sub clause The problems I'm running into are: If I use the existing HTML elements (ol and li) there doesn't seem to be a list style for (a) - I can have a. b. c. or A. B. C. but not (a) (b) (c). If I don't use the existing HTML elements and start using span tags, then if a subclause runs beyond the end of the line it appears underneath the clause number, rather than being indented. Like so: (a) Very long subclause which goes over one line when what I really want is the behaviour from lists, which is: (a) Very long subclause which goes over one line Is there any way to get round these two problems at the same time? I'd prefer to use semantic HTML and CSS for styling, but having the clauses spaced correctly is more important than doing things 'the right way'. I may need subsubclauses at some point (i.e. (i), (ii) etc.), so I can't assume that (a) will be the maximum clause depth.

• PHP Aspect Oriented Design

  This is a continuation of this Code Review question. What was taken away from that post, and other aspect oriented design is it is hard to debug. To counter that, I implemented the ability to turn tracing of the design patterns on. • Master-Details with RadGridView for Silverlight 4, WCF RIA Services RC2 and Entity Framework 4.0

  I have prepared a sample project with the Silverlight 4 version of RadGridView released yesterday. The sample project was created with Visual Studio 2010, WCF RIA Services RC 2 for Visual Studio 2010, and ADO.NET Entity Framework (.NET 4). I have decided to use the SalesOrderHeader and SalesOrderDetails tables from the Adventure Works Database, because they provide the perfect one-to-many relationship: I will not go over the steps for creating the ADO.NET Entity Data Model and the Domain Service Class. In case you are not familiar with them, you should start with Brad Abrams series of blog posts and read this blog after that. To enable the master-details relationship we need to modify two things. First of all we need to include the automatic retrieval of the child entities in the domain service class.   LinqPad as we all know has been a wonderful tool for running ad-hoc queries. With Azure Table storage in picture LinqPad was no longer in picture and we shifted focus to Cloud Storage Studio only to realize the limited and strange querying capabilities of CSS. With some tweaking to Linqpad we can get the comfortable old shoe of ad-hoc queries with LinqPad in the Azure Table storage. Steps: 1. Start LinqPad 2. Right Click in the query window and select “Query Properties” 3. In The Additional References add reference to Microsoft.WindowsAzure.StorageClient, System.Data.Services.Client.dll and the assembly containing the implementation of the DataServiceContext class tied to the Azure table storage. 4. In the additional namespace imports import the same three namespaces mentioned above. 5. Then we need to provide following details. a. Table storage account name and shared key. b. DataServiceContext implementing class in your code. c. When I first start looking at an environment, the first thing I need to understand is the UI. I'm not magically born with some knowledge about the environment and don't learn well by just reading, so I need some help in getting started. I found this was true when I started Windows based development in the early 1990s, Dynamic Web in the late 1990s, ASP.NET in 2000, Silverlight/WPF, iPhone and Android. I find that getting up to speed with a UI is the single biggest deterrent for someone learning a platform. I find that as a beginner I need the features provided by a design surface. It's only as I grow and become comfortable with a platform that I find that building a UI by hand is more productive. Even as I get more advanced, I still can learn from a designer, so it has value as I grow into a platform.I hope that this article helps you as you dive into Android Development.

• Testing for Auto Save and Load Game

  I'm trying to make a simple app that will test the save and load state. Is it a good idea to make an app that has an auto save and load game every time the newbies open the first app then continues it on the other day? I'm trying to make a simple app with a simple moving block sprite, starting at the center coordinate. Once I moved the sprite to the top by touch n' drag, I touch the back key to close the app. I expected that once I re-open the app and the block sprite is still at the top. But instead, it goes back to the center instead. Where can I find more ways to use the preferences or manipulating by telling the dispose method to dispose only specific wastes but not the important records (fastest time, last time where the sprite is located via coordinates, etc.). Is there really an easy way or it has no shortcuts but most effective way? I need help to expand more ideas. Thank you. • Automatic desktop/work environment setup

  I have this strange thing I am trying to do, so before I jump into it I was curious if someone knows about existing solution or maybe have an advice as far as implementation. I run a small software company and as it happens I often do very different type of work. When I do coding for Java project I need Eclipse running and maybe VM with something like ActiveMQ server or whatever, plus terminals to tail -F log files specific to the application, etc. When I do something like weekly progress review with my team I need a few browser windows open and a gedit to take notes and so on. Depending on the type of work I am doing I generally have all of the related apps open in multiple different Workspaces. So in the example above Eclipse would be open in Workspace 1, terminals would be sharing Workspace 2 and so on. What I am trying to do is to automate opening of all these applications, positinoning them on the screen and assigning them to proper Workspaces. My current idea consists of having a Shell script that launches specific apps depending on what type of work I am about to start doing. Is there anything to aid this type of automation? Or is my only option is just a shell scripting at this point? My current system is Ubuntu 10.04

• Windows Azure Upgrade Domain

  Windows Azure automatically divides your role instances into some “logical” domains called upgrade domains. During upgrade, Azure is updating these domains one by one. This is a by design behavior to avoid nasty situations. Some of the last feature additions and enhancements on the platform was the ability to notify your role instances in case of “environment” changes, like adding or removing being most common. In such case, all your roles get a notification of this change. Imagine if you had 50 or 60 role instances, getting notified all at once and start doing various actions to react to this change. It will be a complete disaster for your service. The way to address this problem is upgrade domains. During upgrade Windows Azure updates them one by one and only the associated role instances to a specific domain get notified of the changes taking place. • Lazy coding is fun

  Every once in awhile I get the opportunity to write an application that is important enough to do, but not important enough to do the right way -- meaning standards, best practices, good architecture, et al.  I call it lazy coding.  The industry calls it RAD (rapid application development). I started on the conversion tool at the end of last week.  It will convert our legacy data to a completely new system which I'm working on piece by piece.  It will be used in the future, but only the new parts because it'll only be necessary to convert the individual pieces of the data once.  It was the perfect opportunity to just whip something together, but it was still functional unlike a prototype or proof of concept.  Although I would never write an application like this for a customer (internal or external) this methodology (if you can call it that) works great for something like this. I wouldn't be surprised if I get flamed for equating RAD to lazy coding or lacking standards, best practice, or good architecture.  Unfortunately, it fits in the current usage.  Although, it's possible to create a good, maintainable application using the RAD methodology, it's just too ripe for abuse and requires too much discipline for someone let alone a team to do right. Sometimes it's just fun to throw caution to the wind and start slamming code.

  As the Oracle SOA Suite and BPM Suite 12c products enter beta, many of our clients are starting to discuss migrating from the Oracle 10g or prior platforms. With the BPM Suite 11g, Oracle introduced a major change in architecture with a strong focus on integration with SOA and an entirely new technology stack. In addition, there were fresh new UIs and a renewed business focus with an improved Process Composer and features like Adaptive Case Management. While very beneficial to both technology and the business, the fundamental change in architecture does pose clear migration challenges for clients who have made investments in the 10g platform. Some of the key challenges facing 10g customers include: Managing in-process instance migration and running multiple process engines Migration of User Interfaces and other code within the environment that may not be automated Growing or finding technical staff with both 10g and 12c experience Managing migration projects while continuing to move the business forward and meet day-to-day responsibilities As a former practitioner in a mixed 10g/11g shop, I wrestled with many of these challenges as we tried to plan ahead for the migration. Luckily, there is migration tooling on the way from Oracle and several approaches you can use in planning your migration efforts. In addition, you already have a defined and visible process on the current platform, which will be invaluable as you migrate.  A Migration ModelThis model presents several options across a value and investment spectrum. The goal of the AVIO Migration Model is to kick-start discussions within your company and assist in creating a plan of action to take advantage of the new platform. As with all models, this is a framework for discussion and certain processes or situations may not fit.
