• Can python and php work together?

  I am having a mobile app created for ios. The developers built the app in php. The app requires an algorithm so I found another programmer to develop it. The algorithm programmer built the algorithm in python. The developers refuse to finish the app because they say it won't work with python, while the programmer insist it will. The programmer says put the algorithm in its on server and connect then over http. Will this work and I'd so how risky is it to future problems?

• Test iPhone app on iPad mini?

  I have developed an iPhone app, right now I only need a device for testing. I have 300$, and two choices - second hand iPhone 4, or brand new iPad mini. The better choice obviously is the iPad, but is it sufficient for testing iPhone apps on? On the iPad, iPhone apps can run just fine in 2X mode, but are there any differences between the app performance on iPhone and iPad (except the chipset). Should I test my app on actual iPhone, or the iPad will suffice? My app is RSS reader, not some game, so I think everything will be fine with testing on iPad mini. If I buy the iPad I will find some friends iPhone 4/3gs running iOS 5.1 (because my app's deployment target is 5.1, and the iPad comes with 6.0), but of course I can't extensively test on this iPhone. What I was wondering is do you need a seperate account to publish to the Windows Phone app centre and the Windows App Centre? Also I heard some horror stories about the time it takes to get application published on the Windows phone marketplace, does anyone have any experience with this? • Approached to build app centered around new API and suddenly API is abandoned

  This isn't a huge deal, but I was approached by colleagues/friends to build an app using their new API. There was some potential for pecuniary gain for me depending on app usage. I spent a considerable amount of time polishing the mobile app, based on my assumption that, having been approached in a serious way, that the company would not suddenly shift focus and abandon the API. I wasn't even given so much as a heads up that the API was dead even though I had an app in production that relied on it... For the most part, building the app was a learning experience which I enjoyed, but I don't think I'd have expended all the effort if I knew that the company wasn't as serious about the API as their reaching out to me clearly indicated. How, if at all, would you react?

• Release an upgraded iOS app with a different revenue model

  I am starting a new iOS project and initially plan release a simple free version to gather feedback. I don't intend to monetize or market this initial version. However, I believe "Version 2" of this app will be good enough to pay for. I would prefer to release Version 2 as an upgrade from Version 1 rather than release it as a separate app. This way I can reserve a name for the app. It will also be easier to keep everything in a single repository. Are there any downsides of this approach? It's my understanding that I can change the price of an app at any point in time, so it shouldn't be an issue transitioning to a paid app, should it?

No modification was and will be made to NTFS by this software until it gets repaired. I don't have windows installed, how can I run chkdsk /f from ubuntu?

• Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 2

  Today's Review (alphabetic order): GooNews, Grocery Shopping List, Need for Speed, SurfCube, and United Nations News. I'm a day late if these are going to be 'Monday' posts, but there are lots of apps, lots of goodness, and lots of email, so I might try to do 2 a week, we'll see. So once again I've got a small review of 5 apps that are either on my phone or have been. Disclaimers at the end. In this Issue:   GooNews is a very cool app from Shawn Wildermuth (AgiliTrain). I don't know if he uses this as a demo during his instruction, but it definitely serves a purpose... wanna pick up the top news items from Google on a never-ending basis? ... this is it. You can add your own keyword searches, and send stories to InstaPaper or share via email. I like this because it brings me the news quickly and updated, and works great. GooNews is by AgiliTrain and is Free This was a request by the author, and actually surprised me. I'm a big one for lists, but I would have just done a OneNote list to SkyDrive and to my phone. This app is a lot more than that, but will take you some setup to make it be 'yours'. For obvious reasons, there are no unit prices on things, so you have to set that up to get some idea of the cost of what you're shopping for. But if you do that, you'll get a nice total. Lots of thought went into the various categories and you can add your own. There's a bit of animation on the category selection that's nice. He seems to have covered all the bases necessary to use this, even shopping 'plans' that can be saved, and emailing of lists. As I said, I'm more of a raw list person, but if you take the time to set this up, it should work very nicely for you. Grocery Shopping List is by Grocery Shopper and is $0.99 ($1.99 after Feb 1) with a free trial. This was my 2nd commercial game I bought, and the one I've played the most. I ran the trial, thought it worked great, and bought it. I've had a lot of fun with this... there's no gas pedal.. your foot is in the carbeurator from the GO!, and unless you wanna tap the screen and brake like a little girl, just hang onto the steering wheel (the phone), and guide your way through. Hours of fun and challenges here. I like this because it's got some challenge to it, and the cars seem to be very realistic in their reactions. Need for Speed Undercover is by Electronic Arts is $4.99 and has a free trial. SurfCube Browser is another app by the folks that did the GuitarTuner I reviewed on Monday. You have to see SurfCube to believe it. You've probably seen the YouTube video, if not check SilverlightCream number 1017. The app works very solid, and just as the video demonstrates. I downloaded and tried this, and it immediately did 2 things: bought it, and pinned it to my start page. I like this because it's fun to work with, and it works great as a browser. I'm about *this* close to replacing the IE tile on my front page with SurfCube. SurfCube Browser is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $1.99 and has a free trial. Coming in with another News app is United Nations News by Justin Angel. This is definitely a news aggregator for 'grown ups'... news, photos, videos, and radio broadcsts from the international community all in one very slick app. This is an amazingly well thought-out and complete app. Even better yet, Justin has the code on CodePlex. A very well-done International news aggregator. United Nations News is by Justin Angel and is Free. A few disclaimers: Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week (twice if I find time), and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. I'm still playing with the format, comments are welcome.   Since 11gR2, OUD can be used natively as a OAM Identity Store. Select  "OUD: Oracle Unified Directory" as Store Type as described here. As an alternate solution, you can also configure OVD as Identity Store with OAM and then configure LDAP adapter for OVD with OUD details.Configuring Identity store for OAM is documented here. Choose "OVD: Oracle Virtual Directory" as store type and provide store details as per the document. Configuring LDAP adapter for OVD is documented here. Provide your OUD details required as per the document.

• My Rhythmbox plugin can't meet the Ubuntu Software Center "my-app" requirements

  At http://developer.ubuntu.com/publish/my-apps-packages/ the following technical requirements are cited: Technical requirements In order for your application to be distributed in the Software Centre it must: Be in one, self-contained directory when installed Be able to be installed into the /opt/ directory (*) Be executable by all users from the /opt/ directory (**) Write all configuration settings to ~/.config/ (This can be one file or a directory containing multiple configuration files) A Rhythmbox plugin cannot satisfy any of these requirements. Rhythmbox has compiled-in locations where it looks for installed plugins. So, is there no way for me to publish my app in Ubuntu Software Center? Would it have to go into Universe repository (which would require tremendously more work and political maneuvering to get it accepted)? I already have all the Debian package infrastructure built for it, so I have made a PPA for it.

• Script to recursively grep data from certain files in the directory

  I am making a simple shell script which will minimize the time I spend in searching all directories under a parent directory and grep some things inside some files. My problem though is the part in the if statement. The script should check the current directory for sysconfig.out, grep drive model and dump it to sst-logs.out if it exists, otherwise, change directory to node0 then grep physical memory size from setupsys.out and dump it to sst-logs.out. My problem is, it seems the if then else statement seems not to work as it doesn`t dump any data at all but if i execute grep manually, i do have data. What is wrong with my shell script? Is there any more efficient way in doing this?

• How to Organize Subdirectories? [closed]

  I am working on my first major (several hundred pages) website design and development project. I want to create subdirectories for each of the website's categories, which in turn have their own subdirectories for easy user navigation. Example: website.com/directory. I am aware that by placing an index.html file within each directory, the browser automatically detects and navigates to that page, but that seems like a messy solution (having multiple index.html files, albeit in distinct folders), and I cannot imagine everyone does that. So my question is...how do you properly organize and use subdirectories?

• Saving mobile application data when no service?

  Say I have a mobile application that allows users to enter information which is then uploaded to a central location. I had planned on building this using only HTML5 and javascript (non-native app), but I'm assuming if someone is in an area where there is no service they simply will not be able to use the app. As a work around would it be possible to write a native app that saves the information on the device and then uploads it whenever service returns? If so, is it possible to write a native app entirely in HTML5 and Javascript that does this?

• SteamCMD can't add files to my home directory

  I'm trying to clean up the administration of some game servers I run on a Ubuntu box, part of which has been finally setting permissions properly so I can run the Steam console tool that controls updates and such. I had been running it as root using sudo, but I changed the permissions so that I can start it as a regular user rather than root. That bit seems to work fine, but now when SteamCMD actually starts, it errors with the following output ./steam.sh: line 24: /home/angleosaxon/.steampid: Permission denied Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1334262703) SteamUpdater: Error: Couldn't create directory /home/angleosaxon/Steam/package, got error 13 [ 0%] Download complete. [----] Verifying installation... unlinked 0 orphaned pipes [----] !!! Fatal Error: Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xbfa7cfa0) failed with error 1: Failed to open logfile /home/angleosaxon/Steam/steam.log Leaving aside the question of why it wants to add this information to my home directory, why is it getting access denied errors? As I understand it, since it's being run by my account, it operates with my permissions, so it should be able to read/write from my home directory, shouldn't it? • Windows 8 and "Formerly known as Metro" apps, an experience with PDF app

  I'm slowing and surely getting used to Windows 8.  It is no doubt a slow process since I still run daily on an XP machine, a Vista machine, and 3 windows 7 box. A new quirk I found regarding Windows 8.  I never thought it was important to learn how to close a "formerly known as Metro" app (what do we call those these days?).  Then I attached a portable drive to my laptop and opened up a PDF file, and I couldn't safely remove the hard drive afterwards because I did not know how to close the PDF reader app. I have since learned that if you want to close an app, you can try Alt + F4 mouse over the top left corner and swipe down, right-click to close you app Windows Key + TAB, right-click to close the app All these make me wonder, how do you do this in a phone or tablet?

• C# to develop Android app

  I am learning C# and I'm wondering if there is the potential to develop an Android app that satisfy the need that I'm going to explain. I would basically need an app that, when launched retrieves some data from a webpage (i.e. realtime stock prices), trim the xml to find the data i need and store this value into a variable. Then some calculation is performed on this data and the result is sent via email. It is already possible to launch an app automatically based on some conditions (e.g. every 5 minutes) by using the software Tasker. It is actually also possible to retrieve the data from a webpage and save to a Tasker variable or to a txt file somewhere in the phone (or Dropbox/Box...). But I would like to do that directly via an app so that everything is done "internally" once the app is launched. If that's possible, how should I proceed? Is there any good reference I can use to address my need?

• How to clean unused app files

  I've finished working on a web app and looking back at the process, I can see that a lot of extra files have been accumulated - backup css, php files, javascripts, images. I'm using an MVC workflow (codeigniter) and I would like to clean the app from unused files. There are also libraries which I've downloaded but referenced some of the files in my code, yet I've kept the unused files too. Total mess really, I'll take a note for the next app to become more organized. There is also a fair security concern regarding these sorts of situations, plus I think that it would be better to omit all the extra files when search engines are indexing the app. Has anyone been in that situation and what is the safest/fastest way to clean the app?   I'm currently trying to authenticate via Active Directory Services using the PrincipalContext class. I would like to have my application authenticate to the Domain using Sealed and SSL contexts. In order to do this, I have to use the following constructor of PrincipalContext (link to MSDN page): public PrincipalContext( ContextType contextType, string name, string container, ContextOptions options ) Specifically, I'm using the constructor as so: PrincipalContext domainContext = new PrincipalContext( ContextType.Domain, domain, container, ContextOptions.Sealing | ContextOptions.SecureSocketLayer); MSDN says about "container": The container on the store to use as the root of the context. All queries are performed under this root, and all inserts are performed into this container. For Domain and ApplicationDirectory context types, this parameter is the distinguished name (DN) of a container object. What is the DN of a container object? How do I find out what my container object is? Can I query the Active Directory (or LDAP) server for this?

• Weird behaviour of the app.config deployment after updating it.

  I moved some hardcoded settings to a custom Section (so I did not use the <appSetting tag) in the app.config of my ClickOnce application. When updating, the clients got an error stating that the server gave a 404 not found error for the file "myapp.exe.config.deploy". Browsing on the server I did find the changed app.config there, only it was named app.config.deploy. Thinking to be smart I renamed the app.config to myapp.exe.config on the development machine and published again. That did not work... However after naming the file back to app.config and publishing the error went away and the clients used the setting happily! Please explain what went wrong?

• How to Look Up Email by Full Name in Active Directory?

  I want to search for a user's email by using Active Directory. Available is the user's full name (ex. "John Doe" for the email with an email "[email protected]"). From what I've searched, this comes close to what I'm looking to do -- except that the Filter is set to "SAMAccountName", which is not what I have. Unless I'm misunderstanding, I just need to pick the right attribute and toss in the full name name in the same way. Unfortunately, I don't know what this attribute is, apparently no one has had to ask about searching for information in this manner, and that is a pretty big list (msdn * microsoft * com/en-us/library/ms675090(v=VS.85) * aspx, stackoverflow didn't let me link 2 hyperlinks because I don't have 10 rep) of attributes. Does anyone know how to obtain the user's email address through an Active Directory lookup by using the user's full name?

• Active Directory: User UPN or DN for NTLM name, using pure LDAP?

  I have a Java app that can authenticate to LDAP by logging users into the AD LDAP server with the NTLM name (which they are used to - this is a requirement). I now also need to do authorization, and hence need to find a forest-unique identifier for the user (DN or UPN should work), from which I can further query the directory. The method needs to be absolutely portable, even if the AD is structured in an unusual fashion, otherwise I could just do a string replacement and search for a UPN of "${ntlm-user}@${ntlm-domain}.${configured-trailing-domain}" How can I do this, using pure LDAP? Currently, I'm using the java.naming.directory package, which I'd like to keep using, since it doesn't throw up problems when not binding with a DN but logging in with an NTLM name?
