  • Page rendering time are not steady in IE6

    I have to support IE6 and I calculate rendering time by creating a timestamp in javascript at the beginning of the page and doing the difference when document.ready is fired in jQuery. If I do 3 pages load, the rendering times in milliseconds can look like this : page 1 : 735, 2672, 734 page 2 : 3063, 1516, 3375 page 3 : 8281, 2531, 3703 Why is that? How can I have more consistency?

  • Defined variables and arrays vs functions in php

    Introduction I have some sort of values that I might want to access several times each page is loaded. I can take two different approaches for accessing them but I'm not sure which one is 'better'. Three already implemented examples are several options for the Language, URI and displaying text that I describe here: Language Right now it is configured in this way: lang() is a function that returns different values depending on the argument. Example: lang("full") returns the current language, "English", while lang() returns the abbreviation of the current language, "en". There are many more options, like lang("select"), lang("selectact"), etc that return different things. The code is too long and irrelevant for the case so if anyone wants it just ask for it. Url The $Url array also returns different values depending on the request. The whole array is fully defined in the beginning of the page and used to get shorter but accurate links of the current page. Example: $Url['full'] would return "http://mypage.org/path/to/file.php?page=1" and $Url['file'] would return "file.php". It's useful for action="" within the forms and many other things. There are more values for $Url['folder'], $Url['file'], etc. Same thing about the code, if wanted, just request it. Text [You can skip this section] There's another array called $Text that is defined in the same way than $Url. The whole array is defined at the beginning, making a mysql call and defining all $Text[$i] for current page with a while loop. I'm not sure if this is more efficient than multiple calls for a single mysql cell. Example: $Text['54'] returns "This is just a test array!" which this could perfectly be implemented with a function like text(54). Question With the 3 examples you can see that I use different methods to do almost the same function (no pun intended), but I'm not sure which one should become the standard one for my code. I could create a function called url() and other called text() to output what I want. I think that working with functions in those cases is better, but I'm not sure why. So I'd really appreciate your opinions and advice. Should I mix arrays and functions in the way I described or should I just use funcions? Please, base your answer in this: The source needs to be readable and reusable by other developers Resource consumption (processing, time and memory). The shorter the code the better. Why can't I use parantheses when I call t? Where can I find more documentation on delaying functions?

  • Passing around a SqlConnection

    I have created a TransactionScope and within the scope various items are created and updated in the database. During this process I make a lot of calls to the database. Originally I opened a SqlConnection in the beginning of the TransactionScope and passed it around to any function that made a DB call then I closed the connection after all the calls are made and before the transaction commits. Is it better to do this or to open and close a connection for each call?

  • C++: incorrect swapping of nodes in linked list

    I have 2 simple structures: struct Address { char city[255]; }; typedef Address* AddressPtr; struct Person { char fullName[255]; Address* address; Person* next; }; typedef Person* PersonPtr; The Person structure forms the Linked list where new elements are added to the beginning of the list. What I want to do is to sort them by fullName. At first I tried to swap links, but I lost the beginning of the list and as a result my list was sorted partially. Then I decided to sort list by swapping the values of nodes. But I get strange results. For a list with names: Test3, Test2, Test1, I get Test3, Test3, Test3.   • How do I make non-framework code to framework code? (PHP)

    I just started using CakePHP and it's very different from just normal procedural or basic OOP PHP. I am still learning PHP and still read "beginning PHP/mysql" books that teaches you basic PHP. Also lots of sites online provide code that isn't for a framework. Is the only way to make non-framework code to say a framework, say cakePHP, by learning cakePHP thoroughly than rewriting the code yourself to fit the MVC model?

  • locking on dictionary of structs not working between 2 threads?

    C#, .Net2.0, XP, Zen I have 2 threads accessing a shared dictionary of structures, each thread via an event. At the beginning of the event I lock the dictionary, remove some structures, and exit the lock+event. Yet somehow the 2nd thread|event is finding some of the removed structures. Conceptually I must be doing something wrong for this to be happening? I thought locking was supposed to make it thread safe?
