• Should I use SSD Caching on non bootable HD?

  I have an asus 9p79x pro which allows me to do SSD Caching. I have a 256 GB SSD drive that I use an my primary boot drive, and I have a 1 TB disk where I put most of my games, music, videos, dowloads, pictures, etc. I also have an extra 64 GB SSD Drive that I'm currently not using. I thought it would be a good idea to use it as my 1 TB disk cache and improve the load time of games and programs that are installed on the 1 TB disk; but will this work correctly? It seems from all that I have read online about this board that it is used to cache a boot drive. Any thoughts? Thank you

• Caching without file extensions

  I'm trying to use Varnish to show the non-logged in users a cached version of my website. I'm able to perfectly detect if the user is logged in or out, but I can't cache pages without extensions. There is no file extension because nginx is rewriting the URL to a php script(so caching .php does not work). For example I'd like varnish to cache: example.com example.com/forum/ example.com/contact/ I have tried if (req.request == "GET" && req.url ~ "^/") { return(lookup); } if (req.request == "GET" && req.url ~ "") { return(lookup); } if (req.request == "GET" && req.url ~ "/") { return(lookup); } but nothing seems to work... any help?

• .NET WPF Charting Control

  We're very close to wrapping up a WPF dashboarding application using SSRS (.RDLC files) and the Microsoft Report Viewer. For a number of reasons, this combination has turned out to be less than what we had hoped. One of the biggest problems is that the Microsoft Report Viewer is not a WPF control. We've had other problems as well. Our app consists of at least 5 tabs and each tab has at least 4-5 charts on it. All the charts update on their own timed schedules (like every 15-30 minutes). For the next version I'd like to explore other .NET charting tools for WPF. Performance is absolutely critical. As is resource usage. The tool must support WPF and as many chart types as possible. Can anyone recommend (or not recommend) charting tools they have experience with? We own Telerik and I've dabbled with their charting control. At the 30K foot level, it seems quite nice.

  I have a service for which I'm about to upgrade the authentication. However, I'm trying to ensure that I make the right decision about where the encryption algorithms occur. I currently have two options: option 1) the authentication module is deployed to the client as a javascript library over https and executes client-side, so that the client can POST back an encrypted string. option 2) the authentication module is kept server-side so that the client need only POST back an unencrypted string. I know that many http proxies cache/log the query-string (and therefore any query parameters), but does anyone know of any http proxies that cache the headers as well? If the headers are being cached, then I'll clearly want to encrypt the password inside the SSL encryption, because to my understanding the headers of an HTTPS request may not always be encrypted (depending on the capabilities of the browser etcetera). Can anyone shed any light on the caching of headers by http proxies? Do you have one that does, or know of one that does?

• Volume widget issue with sound card hotplugging

  When plugging a USB sound card may sometimes cause the current audio output (ie. Banshee and PC speakers) to switch immediately. But the volume controls (sound widget in systray, volume keyboard keys) are stuck on the old sound card. Plug a soundcard and amplifier while the volume is set to ultra high for the pc speakers. You can't control the volume without opening the sound settings or alsamixer. This could probably cause neighbour disturbance in some countries. You can't control it with the sound widget of the systray nor the volume keyboard keys. How to disable auto switch of hardware audio output, or enable auto switch of software volume controls ? It would be great to make the software behaviour consistent with the hardware's. Ubuntu 11.10 vanilla up to date.

Does it make sense to store documents in the same Git repository as code - it seems like this conflicts with the nature of the git revision flow. Here is a summary of my question(s): Is the Git revisioning style going to be confusing if both code and documents are checked into the same repository? Experiences with this? Is Git a good fit for documentation revision control? I am NOT asking if a Revision Control System in general should or shouldn't be used for documentation - it should. • Varnish doesn't seem to be caching

  I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server. • Change players state and controls in-game

  I'm using Unity 3D Let's say the player is an ice cube. You control it like a normal player. On press of a button, ice transforms (with animation) into water. You control it completely different than the ice cube. Another great example would be: Player is human being and has normal FPS controls. On press of a button human transforms into birds and now has completely different controls. Now, my question is, what would be easier and better: make one object with animation transition and to stay in that state of anim. until button is pressed again make two object: ice and water. Ice has an animation of turning into water. So replace ice (with animation) with water object And if anyone knows this one too: how to switch between 2 different types of player controls.

  sometimes the sound of videos isn't enough for me. so i reach the sound indicator , over sound preferences and change it to a level higher than 100%. the question is how can i do it from the keyboard? now i can control the volume from the keyboard but it's maximum is 100%. is there a way to do that? EDIT 1: how to use amixer to do it? (as Lyrositor suggested) EDIT2: the closest answer , as Jo-erland, suggested is to set a hotkey to bring up the gnome-volume-control, and then to use left and right arrows to change volume also beyond the 100% mark. any other suggestions, to make this 1 step only? is it possible to set a hotkey to do a sequence of commands ?

• APC and "apc.gc_ttl" :: How Low is Too Low?

  I currently have my apc.gc_ttl set to 600 to help keep fragmentation down. Since apc.gc_ttl just sets the time on cache for garbage collection, I don't see any harm in keeping it this low. However, I'm new to APC, and have seen many configurations online that use a 3600 TTL, which seems quite long to me for garbage collection cache... Is 600 too low? Is 3600 too high? As I'm sure mileage varies on this setup, is there a good rule of thumb to follow?

• Sorting out mSSD acceleration on a Acer M3-581TG

  I recently purchased a Acer Timeline M3 Ultra, it ships with a 500GB HDD and a 20GB mSSD to use as a cache. First thing I did when I got it was format the drives and install a clean OS (on the HDD, the mSSD has nothing on it) - but now I can't figure out how everything needs to be configured in order to use the mSSD as a cache, it just looks like a standard storage drive. I've poked around in the BIOS and there is a SATA mode setting, but it only has one option (AHCI), most of the documentation I've seen on the subject says that the SATA controller needs to be in RAID mode otherwise 'Acceleration' isn't visible in the Intel SRT menu (which for me, it isn't) I've seen a few things that suggest I just need the correct partition layout, I tried this using fdisk from a Linux LiveCD but got nowhere. Any ideas? The laptop shipped with no recovery media so I'm marginally stumped. I don't have any issue with reformatting again if required.

• Windows 7: How to prevent Windows from caching my desktop wallpaper

  I have a service running that renders a changing wallpaper every 5 minutes or so, and replaces the current image file with the new one automatically (That is to say, new image but same filename). On Linux, the change is detected almost automatically, and so I have the most current wallpaper. However, on my Windows 7 machine (Which syncs the image with my Linux machine over Dropbox), it appears to cache the wallpaper from the last time I manually set the wallpaper. The image never changes, even if I restart. Is there a way to make Windows detect the file change, or periodically refresh the wallpaper cache? I'd like to avoid third-party apps if at all possible.

  I'm looking to tune my query cache a bit. According to 7.6.3.4. Query Cache Status and Maintenance in the manual: The Com_select value is given by this formula: Qcache_inserts + Qcache_not_cached + queries with errors found during the column-privileges check However in 5.1.5. Server Status Variables it suggests that this is maintained by the DBMS. Having said that mysql> show status like 'Com_select%'; Always returns a value of 1 - and I'm pretty sure I've run more than one non-cached select query on my database since it started. It looks as if other people are similarly confused. Is this status variable redundant? Which bit of the manual is wrong? TIA

• Read ahead buffering while playing video file from optical disc

  I was wondering if there is a program for Windows 7 (64-bit), that reads ahead the file to be played back (usually MKV files in my case) to the RAM, so the disc that the video file resides in, won't spin for the entire duration of the playback, but only every time the cache is almost empty (with big enough cache so it won't need the drive for long periods). A program that I've used in the past (called DVDIdle), was doing that universally for every video player I wanted, but they've stopped updating it 6 years ago and now it doesn't seem to work with Windows 7 (tried using compatibility mode too). The method I am using now, is to either have the drive wearing down and buzzing all the time or manually copy the entire file to HDD, SSD or RamDisk and play it from there. The closest thing I've found, is a software that slows down the drive's spin speed, but I was looking for something more convenient, automated, without waiting for an entire file to be copied before starting playback or needing any HDD space, like I've used to in the past.   I am trying to get an understanding of Inversion of Control and the dos and donts of this. Of all the articles I read, there is one by Mark Seemann (which is widely linked to in SO) which strongly asks folks not to use the service locator pattern. Then somewhere along the way, I came across this article by Ken where he helps us build our own IoC. I noticed that is is nothing but an implementation of service locator pattern. Questions: Is my observation correct that this implementation is the service locator pattern? If the answer to 1. is yes, then Do all IoC containers (like Autofac) use the service locator pattern? If the answer to 1. is no, then why is this differen? Is there any other pattern (other than DI) for inversion of control?

• HP p410i array controller - what happens if i add memory?

  I have a p410i array controller that only has 256ram. We want to create a raid 5 so we have procured a 512 write back cache module. If we install the write back cache, will this erase the existing raid information. The server currently has 2 disks in raid 1. 6 are spare waiting for an upgrade to create a raid 5. the concern is if we replace/upgrade the memory for the controller, we will wipe the existing production raid 1 array.   I am currently administrating two servers: first one has no control panel, I am creating directory structure, setting permission, configuring different aspects (users/php-fpm pools, nginx hosts..) for each of sites. With more clients, I sat up ISPConfig on my second server, everything is easily handled by ISPConfig Web Interface. However, I am searching for a CLI based solution, i.e. a set of scripts to create and manage hosts. Basically, a method to control ISPConfig from the command line (so I can use it over SSH) would be a good start. Does anybody know of such effort? I searched but all I got was web based solutions.   I'm new to Varnish, and I'm hoping it already does this "out of the box", but I'd like to clarify before I consider using it in production: Here's my setup: I have multiple sites running off of the same machine that vary by subdomain (i.e. user1.example.com, user2.example.com, etc.) Each "site" has a profile picture that has the same name (i.e. user1.example.com/profile.png, user2.example.com/profile.png) Will Varnish recognize these as separate resources and cache them accordingly? Or will I need to change something in the VCL to tell it include the full host url when looking up cache hits?
