• What is a bleed-thru file in ClearCase?

  I was doing a checkout of a file in ClearCase, and I was unable to checkout this file from the frozen view because of this file which was a bleed-thru file. I thawed the view, and then I was able to check out the file, so I really do not have a problem at this time. I do have a question, though. What is a bleed-thru file in ClearCase? Any ideas? I have not heard this term before, and was interested, partly because it just sounds so cool!

But i want improve it with jQuery. • Will Algorithm written in OCaml compiled from C be Faster than Algorithm written in Pure C code?

  So I have some cool Image Processing algorithm. I have written it in OCaml. It performs well. I now I can compile it as C code with such command ocamlc -output-obj -o foo.c foo.ml (I have a situation where I am not alowed to use OCaml compiler to bild my programm for my arcetecture, I can use only specialy modified gcc. so I will compile that programm with sometyhing like gcc -L/usr/lib/ocaml foo.c -lcamlrun -lm -lncurses and Itll run on my archetecture.) I want to know in general case will my OCaml code compiled into C run faster than algorithm implemented in pure C?

  We're gonna have a day when employees' kids will visit our company office. The idea is that they will come see "how parents work", "how cool stuff is done", have fun, etc. Kids will be up to 17 years old. Now I suppose some of the teenagers already think of what they wanna do when they finally grow up and will ask questions like "how can I tell I should get a degree in software engineering and not in logistics/finances/whatever?" So I think we better be prepared and ready to answer those questions so that those who really fit don't waste time but use their potential to the full. What traits that already emerge in teenage years indicate that a person could become a very good software developer?

• Are ASP.NET readymade controls really production worthy ?

  I have come across the ASP.NET ready made controls like grid, repeater... etc. For example while dealing with GRID i remember following facts, ASP.NET V1.1 has DataGrid with "virtual row count" which is heavily used for custom paging which is need of big sites to perform well. ASP.NET V2.0 added the GridView with all sort of cool features but also split the DataSource parts as different component. Also "virtual row count" is not supported and for pagination to be done DataSource control is need to be used. After all these thing i thought that ASP.NET control are not made to be used as is for the development. Please let me know whether i am right or wrong? Also if you think i am wrong PLEASE provide inputs/links which can help me come out of this thinking of mine.

• When is porting data from MySQL to CouchDB NOT advisable? Seeking cautionary tales

  I've dabbled in CouchDB and I have pretty good MySQL experience. I've also created one production application that uses both. I like MySQL but I've run into scaling/concurrency issues with MySQL that CouchDB advertises itself as a general solution for. The problem is that I have MySQL based applications that are pretty huge, and I don't really know whether it would be a good idea or not to try to port them over to a CouchDB datastore. I don't want to put in a lot of time and effort only to find out that my application is really not a good fit for CouchDB. Is there any sort of informed consensus on when porting a MySQL based app to CouchDB is NOT advisable? Any cautionary tales? I think CouchDB is really cool and want to use it more. I'd also like to know ahead of time what specific types of data querying scenarios CouchDB is really not good for, or if CouchDB can really replace MySQL for all the applications I create going forward.

• Getting a NullReferenceException Error when invoking a Select File Dialog Box

  Hey everyone This is a real newbie question. I have simple app that selects a picture and display's that picture in a PictureBox. I decided to mess with the Opacity Attribute so I added a timer and created this cool effect where the Main Form's Opacity is increased by 20% every 400 miliseconds. The problem is that now when I click the button that invokes the Select File Dialog Box I'm getting a NullReferenceException error. private void tmrClock_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (ViewerForm.ActiveForm.Opacity != 1) { ActiveForm.Opacity = ActiveForm.Opacity + .20; } } The error message is pointing to the if statement. • What would be the simplest way to deal with a text file using JSP?

  First and foremost I should acknowledge that I have no experience at all using Java ServerPages, but I'm positive about achieving this task if you guys help me out a bit since it doesn't seem like something difficult for a seasoned JSP programmer. Anyway the thing is, there's an actual running JSP application within a *NIX box which I somewhat administer with kind of good permissions. The idea is to create a new but dead simple JSP page to control some Korn Shell scripts I've got running there. So the goal is to make some sort of HTML form that will be writing some kind of scriptStatus.on / scriptStatus.off file: #!usr/bin/ksh # coolScript.sh # This is my cool script that is being launched by cron every 10 minutes. if [ -e scriptStatus.off ] then # monitor disabled else # monitor enabled fi which then can be checked for existence within the running script, therefore allowing to easily activate / deactivate it without actually have do deal with cron.   Hi I have created the following effects on the images seen here http://techavid.com/design/test3.html . You see when you hover and then click on each image, they go from grey to color. When you click on one - the others go grey and the one clicked remains color. That's cool, but now I need the text 1st: Sun for example to display and hide along with its graphic button. The word "Sun," is a link that needs to link out to a URL so it has to be separated from the image effect code. What jquery or javascript code do I need to do this? thanks, jonah p.s. • Automatic images translation to 3d model

  I'm quite interested in automatic images translation to 3d models. Not really for commercial product, but from the point of possible academic research and implementation. What I'd like to achieve is almost transparent for user process of transformation series of images (fewer is better) to 3d model which might be shown in flash/silverlight/javafx or similar. Consider online furniture store with 3d models of all items in stock. Kinda cool to have ability to see the product in 3d before purchasing it. I managed to find a few pieces of software, like insight3d, but it couldn't be used in my case I guess. So, are there any similar projects or tips for me? If it would require to write that piece of software - I'd really love to dig into research on this field.

  Hi, everyone Please take a look at this piece of code. I'm allocating one byte for the first variable and another byte for the second one. However, it seems like the compiler allocates more (or I'm missing something). • How to do insert one row from one table to another table(what has less columns)?

  Hi I am trying to find rows that are not in one table and insert them into another. The table I am trying to insert into has less columns then the other one. These columns are null but it would be cool if I could hardcode a value before I do the insert. But I am having so much trouble with just trying to get it to insert. I have something like this SELECT p.ProductId, p.ProductName INTO SomeTable FROM Product as p WHERE p.ProductName != 'iPad' I will get a error like this though Msg 4104, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 The multi-part identifier "p.ProductId" could not be bound. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. I copied and pasted the names in so I don't think it is a spelling mistake. I am using ms sql 2005 express.

  I have XMLs(or Objects) that represents data at some point in a business process. I would like to be able to see what has changed between step1 and step5(two versions of the same XML or Object). Id like to implement this like diff function in version control system. how to do it in web app? P.S. I dont want to just store those files in VCS and than make it do the diff. However if I could somehow emulate VCS without having one that would be cool. P.S. I know there are some JS frameworks that offer diff functionality, but the XML could have 10MB, so I think it should be dont at server side.

  I'd like to create an image slider with some cool 3d effects, such as this one: http://tympanus.net/codrops/2011/09/05/slicebox-3d-image-slider/ The thing is, while I know how to use CSS3 3D transforms to rotate something, I don't know how to animate "parts" of an image. In the link above, the script seems to somehow "slice" the image into several pieces, and then animate those separately. However, the image was not sliced up beforehand - it is one whole image. Can anyone recommend any tutorials on how to achieve this effect, or perhaps just give the name of whatever technique was used to do this? Thank you in advance!

• Looking for a specific kind of WEB framework, no malarkey please

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.

  I'm a person that learns best from example. Currently, I'm diving into the field of Web Development after fifteen years of developing desktop apps. I'm still getting used to all the web technologies used for developing modern web sites and everywhere I look, I see cool little UI elements and question how they're implemented. So I thought I'd ask you, the web experts...the wexperts :) What are some straight forward or creative ways you could code this grid-breaking arrow... The basic layout for this page looks like... What would the html/css code look like? Would you split the image into multiple images or could you use a single image? I'm sure this is a really simple concept and it completely boggles me. • Does it make any sense to develop for iPhone OS 3.0 instead of 3.2?

  When it comes to backwards-compatibility, I want to stick to iPhone OS 3.0 so also some of the poor iPod Touch users who aren't rich enough for iPhones use my apps. But iPhone OS 3.2 has some pretty cool features that would be nice to have. Problematic thing: Since it's just a minor upgrade, I can imagine most iPod Touch users who decided to upgrade to 3.0 probably never upgraded to 3.2. I'm not sure if Apple actually asked them to pay like 10 bucks for going from 3.0 to 3.2. However, if Apple did ask them for money, I'm sure like 90% of all iPod Touch users didn't upgrade. So the big question is: IF you decide to go with iPhone OS 3.0, is it a stupid idea to stick to 3.2 just because of a few more features? Will this effectively kill half of your iPod Touch userbase?

  I have a set of tasks that I would like to execute every night. These tasks include querying a database, moving and renaming some images and lastly updating a database table. My first thought had been to create a SQL Server job and use xp_cmdshell to move the files but after a bit of research i decided against it. My question now is what is the best way to implement this as a .NET application? Should I create a Windows service? A console application that is scheduled to run once per night? Some other cool way that I don't even know about?

• Reading in data from a file into an array

  If I have an options file along the lines of this: size = 4 data = 1100010100110010 And I have a 2d size * size array that I want to populate the values in data into, what's the best way of doing it? To clarify, for the example I have I'd want an array like this: int[4][4] array = {{1,1,0,0}, {0,1,0,1}, {0,0,1,1}, {0,0,1,0}}. (Not real code but you get the idea). Size can be really be any number though. I'm thinking I'd have to read in the size, maloc an array and then maybe read in a string full of data then loop through each char in the data, cast it to an int and stick it in the appropriate index? But I really have no idea how to go about it, have been searching for a while with no luck. Any help would be cool! :)

• Does Core Data automatically validate new values when they are set?

  In this question, someone asked how to write a validation method for Core Data. I did that, and it looks cool. But one thing doesn't happen: The validation. I can easily set any "bad" value and this method doesn't get called automatically. What's the concept behind this? Must I always first call the validation method before setting any value? So would I write setter methods which call the appropriate validation method first? And if yes, what's the point of following a strict convention in how to write the validation method signature? I guess there's also some automatic way of validation, then. How to activate this?

• New to VS.net (VB.net) 2008. Windows 7 aero glass stuff.

  Hey all, i have been using VB.net 2008 for a few months and i have a question. I compiled my program and ran it in a VM running windows 7. However, the progress bar looks like it does in XP. It doesn't have that cool look to it like I've seen in many other programs running in windows 7. I have downloaded the 3.5 .net framework with sp1 and also the sdk for windows 7 (1.4+ gb dvd) but i still see nothing. Is there a check-box i am missing in VS 2008 to enable these types of features? Maybe some type of code i need to place in the program? Thanks! David

• How do I dynamically import a module in App Engine?

  I'm trying to dynamically load a class from a specific module (called 'commands') and the code runs totally cool on my local setup running from a local Django server. This bombs out though when I deploy to Google App Engine. I've tried adding the commands module's parent module to the import as well with no avail (on either setup in that case). Here's the code: mod = __import__('commands.%s' % command, globals(), locals(), [command]) return getattr(mod, command) App Engine just throws an ImportError whenever it hits this. And the clarify, it doesn't bomb out on the commands module. If I have a command like 'commands.cat' it can't find 'cat'.

• convert javascript number to css value -- maximum number of trailing decimals

  I am about to have some fun with the css transform matrix and javascript. At the moment everything is cool, except when a number becomes something like 0.000034e3344 after the to string conversion. Than the transform does not work. So I know that there is the Number.toFixed() method which actually solves the problem, but i ask myself how many trailing decimals make sense. So what is the highest value i can pass to the toFixed() method to get the most precise results? EDIT::: the exact number output was: 9.685539407532573e-20
