• Unable to Connect MTS Mblaze modem in Ubuntu 12.10?

  I am using Ubuntu for 1st time and i do have an modem MTS Mblaze in India which i am using in Windows. But when i tried to connect in Ubuntu 12.10 using give default method i.e. choose country, modem type, connection, add details and then connect. But its not working. Then i came over another solution at http://www.e-dirts.com/2012/how-to-setup-mts-mblaze-usb-modem-in-ubuntu-gnulinux/ But no installation of CrossPlatformUI-V2.1.2-SSTL-ALL-ubuntu.deb happens at all. Is it because i'm using 12.10 version while its tested using 12.04 version. And does that another 'Advanced user method' can be followed without internet? Please suggest. Help

• Why are more programmers not freelance these days? [closed]

  Leaving the whole pie to only a few of them, amplifying the huge differences between the two status. Pay is a (huge) one, not having to do overtime is another. I leave the question open to hopefully get many great answers on all the different subjects that affects that feeling and decision not to go. EDIT: While this question is really global, I'll be interested in any studies, facts, articles, opinions regarding local markets such as US, India and even Australia in which I'm in love with. • Posting to facebook from unity3d on iOS and android

  I've made a game in unity3d for iOS and android. We have our own server to manage high scores and stuff like that. We'd also like to have the possibility post high scores to facebook, and also do things like this.. If you and your friend are have both posted a score for our game to facebook and you post a better score then you can send them a notification. I'm reading around about this now, but I'm wondering whats the normal way people do this? Possible ways.. Use the unity facebook SDK Looks like it would work but there are different versions for iOS and android. Call the facebook graph API directly from our server. This would unify the iOS and android versions and also it makes sense as our server holds / deals with all the highscore info. I can just imagine difficulties with logging in / authentication

  I'm a developer negotiating compensation for a commercialized version of some data analysis software I wrote (see my profile if you like). This is a completely new experience for me. I want per-unit royalties, but I don't have the slightest idea what the standard amount is. I also want to be compensated for my time, so that's an upfront R&D cost for the company I'm negotiating with, but distribution cost to them is presumably virtually nothing once it's out there. But then there's support costs. What sorts of deals have you folks negotiated?

• Any way to edit Warcraft MDX or MDL Animated models?

  I have been searching for a while for a way to get an animated mdl or mdx model into any 3D animating software (such as Blender), but so far have not had any success. I found a few methods of getting textured static mdx or mdl models into Blender/Milkshape/Hexagon, but no one seems to have written an importer that deals with the mdl/mdx model's keyframe animation. On that note, if anyone knows of a way of importing a keyframe-animated 3DS model into Blender, me and alot of people would appreciate it if you could let us know. • How to understand Linux kernel source code for a beginner?

  I am a student interested in working on Memory Management, particularly the page replacement component of the linux kernel. What are the different guides that can help me to begin understanding the kernel source? I have tried to read the book Understanding the Linux Virutal Memory Manager by Mel Gorman and Understanding the Linux Kernel by Cesati and Bovet, but they do not explain the flow of control through the code. They only end up explaining various data structures used and the work various functions perform. This makes the code more confusing. My project deals with tweaking the page replacement algorithm in a mainstream kernel and analyse its performance for a set of workloads. Is there a flavor of the linux kernel that would be easier to understand(if not the linux-2.6.xx kernel)?

• Resize images to specific height value in ImageMagick?

  I've looked around for this, and can't find an easily implemented solution. Currently I'm working on an application that deals with panoramas. As they come out of the batch stitch process, the dimensions average 18000x4000. Using ImageMagick, how can I downscale those images to a specific height value while maintaining aspect ratio? According to the manual, the convert operation takes in both height and width to resize to while maintaining the same aspect ratio. What I'd like is to put in 600 and 1000 in my existing resize script function and have both a regular viewable image as well as a reduced size.

• Coding events. What they actually are about, and are they worth it?

  I'm a relatively new programmer, but am very much interested in it. I enrolled to this coding event (Yahoo! Hack India, to be precise), and got invited after the pre-coding contest. The event is like a contest where developers create an application in 24 hours, In group or individually. I've never been to such an event before, and certainly don't know anyone who did. So, here are my questions. First of all, is it worth it? What if we don't get any ideas in the first place to start with? I'm not actually a developer, I'm an electrical engineering student who just completed his 2nd semester. So will be able to match up to the level of other developers who will be there? • How can I get accurate collision resolution on the corners of rectangles?

  I have a working collision system implemented, and it's based on minimum translation vectors. This works fine in most cases except when the minimum translation vector is not actually in the direction of the collision. For example: When a rectangle is on the far edge on any side of another rectangle, a force can be applied, in this example down, the pushes one rectangle into the other, particularly a static object like a wall or a floor. As in the picture, the collision is coming from above, but because it's on the very edge, it translates to the left instead of back up. I've searched for a while to find an approach but everything I can find deals with general corner collisions where my problem is only in this one limited case. Any suggestions?

• Identical spam coming from many different (but similar) IP addresses

  A forum I run has been the victim of spam user accounts recently - several accounts that have been registered and the profile fill with advertising/links. All of this is for the same company, or group of companies. I deleted several accounts weeks ago and blocked some IP addresses, but today they have come back with the same spam. Every account has a different IP address, but they are all of the form 122.179.*.* or 122.169.*.*. I am considering blocking those two IP ranges, but there are potentially thousands of IPs in that range. They appear to be assigned to India (although the spam is for an American company) so given the site is for a western, English-speaking audience maybe it doesn't matter. My questions: How are they posting on so many IPs? Is there likely to be a limit to the number of IPs they have access to? Is there anything else I can do at the IP-level to block them? (I am looking into other measures like blocking usernames/links.)

• Hosting a magnet link site which could possibly infringe copyrighted material?

  I have for the last 3 months built a crawler, indexer and alot of other things for what started out to be a home project for indexing magnet links on the internet. As my project grew I have thought about releasing my collected data (which at the minute is on a public domain but with no access) to the public. Whatever the crawler sucks in goes in, and whatever the indexer decides to index gets indexed as it is a fully automated process. My question is as follows; Considering that most of the data that is collected from what I have built points to illegal copyrighted material (as most magnet links do) where would it be best to host such a site. I notice all of the already public torrent sites are hosted in India is this because there laws are less strict on copyright infringement? Have any of you hosted such a site, and if so what problems have you ran into? And as always any advice on being a webmaster for this type website?
