• Quick CPU ring mode protection question

  Hi, me again :) I am very curious in messing up with HW. But my top level "messing" so far was linked or inline assembler in C program. If my understanding of CPU and ring mode is right, I cannot directly from user mode app access some low level CPU features, like disabling interrupts, or changing protected mode segments, so I must use system calls to do everything I want. But, if I am right, drivers can run in ring mode 0. I actually don´t know much about drivers, but this is what I ask for. I just want to know, is learning how to write your own drivers and than call them the way I should go, to do what I wrote? I know I could write whole new OS (at least to some point), but what I exactly want to do is acessing some low level features of HW from standart windows application. So, is driver the way to go?

• Sharepoint 2007: Edit vs Read Only Mode

  Sorry about the title, dont' really know what it should be. If I open a doc in read only mode I'm able to press save and then it opens up a save as box and the default directory is the directory on the sharepoint server and if you press save you save it to the server. This actually makes the whole process not really "read only" mode since I could actually update the document. Is there a way to prevent this from happening so that if someone chooses read only there is no way possible to updload any changes back to the sharepoint site? Also, it has been suggested as a solution to get rid of the edit/read only option so that people have to check out the document. Is there a way to remove the edit/read only option on documents?

  I'm displaying a PNG with a transparent background that looks good in Windows 7, but then I run my app in XP Mode or remote desktop to a Windows XP machine and the PNG looks incorrect. I noticed that if I disable "Integration Mode" or run the app on XP without remote desktop, the image looks fine. How do I get DrawImage to render the PNG correctly in XP Mode or remote desktop?   I'm using the php debugger geben and nxhtml-mode -- my standard mode for editing php files. Unfortunately, these two modes don't mix well. Is it possible to configure emacs such a way that it enables nxhtml only conditionaly, when I open php files manually, but enables php-mode instead when the buffer is opened by geben?

  Firefox browser contains network settings under Tools--Options--Advanced--Network--Settings and there is an option to do auto detect proxy settings, how should I enable this? Currently this is manually configured and its possible for users to bypass and use the internet directly. We use a variety of browsers (firefox, IE, chrome, safari, opera) on win xp, win 2003, win vista machines. How should I enable this so that the end user cannot manipulate the settings on his browser to by pass security. I have configured a squid cache proxy server for this purpose.

  We all know that Debug.Assert will not be compiled into the dlls when compiled in release mode. But for some reason Debug.Assert did appear in the release version of a component I wrote. I suspect that I might have mess up my csproject setting. Any idea why Debug.Assert appears in release mode? P/S: I have double checked to make sure that I was really compiling in release mode before asking this question.

• Repeating characters in VIM insert mode

  Is there a way of repeating a character while in Vim's insert mode? For example, say I would like to insert 80 dashes, in something like emacs I would type: Ctrl+U 8 0 - The only way I know how to do it in VIM is to exit normal mode for the repeat argument, then go back into insert mode to type the dash, then exit to insert the actual dashes, AND then go back into insert mode to carry on typing. The sequence is a really long: <ESC> 8 0 a - <ESC> a It would be nice not to switch in and out of modes. Thanks

  I'm making a bookmarklet, but I've encountered some wierd behaviour in IE8. The code causing the problem is this: var els = document.getElementById("my_id").getElementsByTagName("*"); for(var i in els) { alert(i+","+els[i]) } The first thing that is alerted is "length, n". This isn't the case in chrome: just in IE8. Interestingly, it seems to behave differently depending on whether the code goes in the console/address bar or the page itself. Is this standard behaviour?

• Port forwarding with router in bridged mode

  let say R1 and R2. R1 is in bridged mode and connected to R2. R2 is a dhcp server. To R2 is an internet camera connected. When i am on R2 and i do enter the ip of the camera then it will work without a problem. However i want to acces the camera from the outside. So in R2 i forwarded a port (done this one other networks without problems). However I can't connect from the outside. Can R1 blocking the port? I cant log in on R1 as long as it is in bridged mode.

• Emacs stops taking input when a file has changed on disk [migrated]

  I'm using Emacs v24.3.1 on Windows 8. I had a file change on disk while I had an Emacs buffer open with that file. As soon as I attempt to make a change to the buffer, a message appears in the minibuffer. Fileblah.txt changed on disk; really edit the buffer? (y, n, r or C-h) I would expect to be able to hit r to have it reload the disk version of the file, but nothing happens. Emacs completely stops responding to input. None of the listed keys work, nor do any other keys as far as I can tell. I can't C-g out of the minibuffer. Alt-F4 doesn't work, not does Close window from the task bar. I have to kill the process from task manager. Anyone have any idea what I'm doing wrong here? In cases it's various modes not playing nice with each other, for reference, my init.el is here. Nothing complex. Here's the breakdown: better-defaults (ido-mode, remove menu-bar, uniquify buffer `forward, saveplace) recentf-mode custom frame title visual-line-mode require final newline and delete trailing whitespace on save Markdown mode with auto-mode-alist Flyspell with Aspell backend Powershell mode with auto-mode-alist Ruby auto-mode-alist Puppet mode with auto-mode-alist Feature (Gherkin) mode with auto-mode-alist The specific file was a markdown file with Github-flavored Markdown mode and Flyspell mode enabled.

  On an android device, I am connecting to a remote network using openvpn for performing service discovery. WORKING CASE: After the device is camped on 3g/4g and after connecting to remote network by openvpn, when the zeroconf browser is launched, I can see the mdns query packets being send through the tap0 interface resulting into rendering of services on the browser. From the tcpdump captured on the device, I can see that the mdns query packets are send to tap0 interface. tap0 ip: 192.168.11.200 Route table information: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 76.26.112.234 10.179.240.1 255.255.255.255 UGH 0 0 0 pdpbr1 10.179.240.1 * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 pdpbr1 32.1.72.136 * 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 pdpbr0 10.179.240.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 pdpbr1 192.168.11.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 tap0 default 192.168.11.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 tap0 NOT WORKING CASE: However, after switching on the wifi and connecting it to remote network, when the zeroconf browser is launched, instead of sending the mdns query packets to tap0 interface; these packets are being send to eth0 interface due to which we cannot see the services. • How do I get adobe flash working in Chrome or Chromium on Ringtail?

  I have recently upgraded to Ringtail and for some reason flash isn't working on either Chrome or Chromium. It works in firefox but I prefer Chrome as my browser so switching to firefox when a website containing flash appears is a bit annoying. According to just about every source, flash it built into Chrome and should just work even on Ubuntu. I tried removing chrome and reinstalling it, but the problem persists. I've checked about://plugins and flash is enabled. • tail-like view on HTML logfiles

  I'm working on an application that creates HTML log files. I'm tired of having to manually reload and scroll to the bottom in the browser to see the latest entries. A solution that does not really satisfy me is using the Firefox plugins ReloadEvery and ScrollyFox. In many situations reloading frequency and scrolling speed are just to slow. Of course I could actually use tail, but I would prefer a rendered HTML page. Do you have any suggestions? Firefox extensions are preferred, but any other tip is appreciated, too.

I do not remember ever setting a password during installation, and I am not asked for a password to login either. As far as I knew I never had a password before, is there a way to recover the user password from within ubuntu without entering into recovery mode? I do not see why I need to restart as I never need a password to start up the computer and log in...
