• WPF Validation in an ElementHost control

  I've got a WinForms form that contains an ElementHost control (which contains a WPF UserControl) and a Save button. In the WPF UserControl I've got a text box with some validation on it. Something like this... <TextBox Name="txtSomething" ToolTip="{Binding ElementName=txtSomething, Path=(Validation.Errors).[0].ErrorContent}"> <Binding NotifyOnValidationError="True" Path="Something"> <Binding.ValidationRules> <commonWPF:DecimalRangeRule Max="1" Min="0" /> </Binding.ValidationRules> </Binding> </TextBox> This all works fine. What I want to do however, is disable the Save button while the form is in an invalid state. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• A stupid question regarding google gadgets. How to host a google gadget? How it works?

  Hi, I spent 5 hours by checking google gadgets websites and FAQs. maybe I am really stupid. I have no idea how to host a gadget. What I knew from reading the google website: 1, I can write gadget with xml, javascript etc.. 2, gadget can be added to igoogle etc.. 3, google can host the gadget for you. 4, gadget can be hosted at anywhere??? All of the above information doesn't answer my question. For instance, with jQuery or Dojo Toolkit, I can download the javascript framework and use it. With google gadget, I can not find a download link for the framework. Why? Does google provide its framework? If no, why does google website say it can be hosted anywhere? I am totally confused. A download link is nowhere in google-gadget website. A brief explanation or some helpful links are very welcome!! Thanks a lot!!! Please don't blame me if you think this question is too silly.

I have a ton of local projects already and uploading is not an issue on any other project, I even use the same example files (This is the first time I have used Uploadify) Is there a known reason for this behaviour? EDIT: Have found the issue. I had forgotten to add my usual .htaccess file to the example project.

• Mutating the expression tree of a predicate to target another type

  Intro In the application I 'm currently working on, there are two kinds of each business object: the "ActiveRecord" type, and the "DataContract" type. So for example, we have: namespace ActiveRecord { class Widget { public int Id { get; set; } } } namespace DataContracts { class Widget { public int Id { get; set; } } } The database access layer takes care of "translating" between hierarchies: you can tell it to update a DataContracts.Widget, and it will magically create an ActiveRecord.Widget with the same property values and save that. The problem I have surfaced when attempting to refactor this database access layer. The Problem I want to add methods like the following to the database access layer: // Widget is DataContract.Widget interface DbAccessLayer { IEnumerable<Widget> GetMany(Expression<Func<Widget, bool>> predicate); } The above is a simple general-use "get" method with custom predicate. The only point of interest is that I 'm not passing in an anonymous function but rather an expression tree. This is done because inside DbAccessLayer we have to query ActiveRecord.Widget efficiently (LINQ to SQL) and not have the database return all ActiveRecord.Widget instances and then filter the enumerable collection. We need to pass in an expression tree, so we ask for one as the parameter for GetMany. The snag: the parameter we have needs to be magically transformed from an Expression<Func<DataContract.Widget, bool>> to an Expression<Func<ActiveRecord.Widget, bool>>. This is where I haven't managed to pull it off... Attempted Solution What we 'd like to do inside GetMany is: IEnumerable<DataContract.Widget> GetMany( Expression<Func<DataContract.Widget, bool>> predicate) { var lambda = Expression.Lambda<Func<ActiveRecord.Widget, bool>>( predicate.Body, predicate.Parameters); // use lambda to query ActiveRecord.Widget and return some value } This won't work because in a typical scenario, for example if: predicate == w => w.Id == 0; ...the expression tree contains a MemberAccessExpression instance which has a MemberInfo property (named Member) that point to members of DataContract.Widget. There are also ParameterExpression instances both in the expression tree and in its parameter expression collection (predicate.Parameters); After searching a bit, I found System.Linq.Expressions.ExpressionVisitor (its source can be found here in the context of a how-to, very helpful) which is a convenient way to modify an expression tree. Armed with this, I implemented a visitor. This simple visitor only takes care of changing the types in member access and parameter expressions. The bad news is that it isn't working; it's blowing up on me when I try to use it (the exception messages are really not helpful at all). I have examined the lambda my code produces and a hardcoded lambda with the same expression; they look exactly the same. I spent hours in the debugger trying to find some difference, but I can't. When predicate is w => w.Id == 0, lambda looks exactly like referenceLambda. But the latter works with e.g. IQueryable<T>.Where, while the former does not (I have tried this in the immediate window of the debugger). I should also mention that when predicate is w => true, it all works just fine. Therefore I am assuming that I 'm not doing enough work in Visitor, but I can't find any more leads to follow on. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance for your help!

If the parameter is a value type, this works: var methodCall = (MethodCallExpression)method.Body; var parameterValue = ((ConstantExpression)methodCall.Arguments[0]).Value; However, when I pass in a reference type, methodCall.Arguments[0] is a MemberExpression, and I can't seem to figure out how to write code to get the value out of it.

  I've got some drivers which are basically LibUSB-Win32 with a new .inf file do describe product/vendor ids and strings which describe my hardware. This works fine for 32 bit windows, but 64 bit versions have problems; namely that Microsoft in their wisdom require all drivers to be digitally signed. So my questions are thus: Is there a version of the LibUSB-Win32 drivers which are already signed I could use? If there aren't already some signed ones I can canibalise, what exactly do I have to do to get my drivers signed. Do I need to get 64 and 32 bit versions signed separately and will this cost more? Is this a free alternative to getting them signed? Are there any other options I should consider besides requiring that my customers boot into test mode each time they start their machines (not an option I'd consider).

• Jquery Accordion Close then Open

  Hi Everyone, I've set up a number of accordions on a page using the jquery accordion plugin so I can implement expand all and collapse all functionality. Each ID element is it's own accordion and the code below works to close them all no matter which ones are already open: $("#contact, #address, #email, #sales, #equipment, #notes, #marketingdata") .accordion("activate", -1) ; My problem is with the expand all. When I have them all expand with this code: $("#contact, #address, #email, #sales, #equipment, #notes, #marketingdata") .accordion("activate", 0) ; Some will contract and some will expand based on whether or not they are previously open. My idea to correct this was to collapse them all and then expand them all when the expand all was clicked. This code however won't execute properly: $("#contact, #address, #email, #sales, #equipment, #notes, #marketingdata") .accordion("activate", -1) ; $("#contact, #address, #email, #sales, #equipment, #notes, #marketingdata") .accordion("activate", 0) ; It will only hit the second command and not close them all first. • C# console applications all 16bit?

  Hi all, I was reading up about NTVDM.exe as I build a quick test console app and it crashed on a friends machine complaining about this EXE. As I understand it all DOS cmd windows (C# console apps included) run as 16bit not 32bit. Is this true? Does this mean all my works console app back office apps are running as 16bit rather than making the most of the 32bit available? What about Windows services? As I believe we wrote it as a console app then made it run as a windows service? Thanks

• Access Violation Exception only appearing when running C# app without debugger attached

  I have an application that works fine in Visual Studios 2008, and I am trying to get it into VS 2010 in order to use .NET 4, and I have a really weird problem. When I run the code from either Release mode or Debug mode with the debugger attached (F5), I have no problems running the program. However, when I run the program from either Release or Debug without the debugger attached (Shift+F5), I get an Access Violation Exception when I attempt to run some code in a dll from GDCM. I've created the dlls by using CMake and Swig and following the instructions here adjusting the instructions where necessary to build for VS 2010 and .NET 4. Does any one have any ideas why this is happening and how I can fix it?

• Drag drop open file in Macvim split window?

  Hello. I like to use the split window feature in Vim. However I cannot seem to drag drop new files into the different sections. Doing so will just open a new tab. I don't like using tabs as I still need to flick between them and not much different to using separate windows. Is there anyway I can change this behaviour? It works fine on Windows gVim and Im using the same vimrc file.

• ASP.net Literal or Page altering HTML string, causing formatting issues

  We have a service that generates a report (using word templates and a 3rd party library), and then returns a string in HTML. While this HTML isn't great - its formatted correctly in this string. We want this HTML to show up on a page - format intact. What we currently have done is set an ASP.net Literal's text element to this string. While this works, I have noticed that it has reformatted the HTML string slightly. For the most part, it looks like it generated a bunch of new CSS classes, and a new style element in the HTML. This HTML does not exist in the string thats being returned. I could filter all of this back out, but wonder if there is a better way. I assume that the Page itself is altering something. What is the best way to display this raw HTML back to the user? I can't directly use a Response.Write(string), because this page does have a few other controls on it.

• Converting LDAP from Tomcat to GlassFish

  Hi, I have a simple web-app that is developed in Netbeans(6.8) and works fine in Tomcat(6) using LDAP(Active Directory). I need to convert this to an EE (JSF2), so I am moving from Tomcat to GlassFish(v3). I have changed the web files to xhtml and configured the xml files. However, I cannot get the GlassFish LDAP configuration to authenticate. I am attaching my old web.xml and server.xml (from Tomcat) snippets and the portions of the new web.xml, sun-web.xml, and the GlassFish configuration. If anyone can help me figure out where I am missing the piece that will allow a user to be authenticated, I would appreciate it. (btw, I am not using roles, just authenticating against the LDAP db is good enought.) As it is right now, my app will prompt me to enter a user when I try to access a file in the 'protected' area and the GlassFish server throws an exception when it fails to authenticate. Because it works under Tomcat, I know I have the right information, I just don't know how to format it to get GlassFish to pass it along. Thanks. • Capture KeyUp event on form when child control has focus

  I need to capture the KeyUp event in my form (to toggle a "full screen mode"). In that case, I don't get the event at all (also tried OnKeyDown - no luck there either). I could handle the KeyUp event from the child control, but the controls on the form are generated dynamically, and there may be many of them - each having many children of their own. Is there any way to do this without generating event handlers for every control on the screen (which I certainly could do with a recursive function)?

• Pros and Cons of Proprietary Software

  Proprietary software is about as good as open-source software. There are so many problems with proprietary technologies, however, that I'm beginning to think it's best to avoid them: The software will only be maintained as long as the company exists (and profits). The level of security of the application is as unknowable as the source code. Alterations and derivative works, however necessary and beneficial, are disallowed. I simply don't see any point in even learning to use such systems as those created by Microsoft and Apple. Of course I don't pretend that ignorance is the superior option: one has to have a certain working knowledge simply because of the ubiquity of these things. I just don't see any reason why, as an independent developer, I should ever consider it a remotely good idea to actually use them. So that's the question, or discussion topic, or what have you: In what ways do developers benefit at all from using closed-source development software?

• Form submission and hyperlinks using GET and POST

  I have a search resource, the user can perform searches by filling out a form and submitting it, the create action is called, the Search is saved, the show action is called, and the results are displayed. This all happens with the default POST, and all works fine. The user may want to save his search in the saved_search table (i don't use the Search table for this purpose as this table stores all searches for the purpose of compiling statistics, and gets cleared on a regular basis). Once the Search is saved, it can be re-run by clicking a hyperlink, this is where i start to get problems. I see no way of getting my hyperlink to run the create action of Search, with a POST request, and the necessary data. I then decided to try to get both form submission and the hyperlink to perform a search using a GET request, i was unable to get form_for to run my Search create action using a GET request, it always seems to get routed to my index action. Can someone suggest a good restful solution to this problem please. Many thanks

• What should I use to replace the WinAPI Beep() function?

  I've got a Visual C++/CLI app which uses beeps to signify good and bad results (used when the user can't see the screen). Currently I use low pitched beeps for bad results and high pitched beeps for good results: if( goodResult == true ) { Beep(1000, 40); } else { Beep(2000, 20); } This works okay on my Vista laptop, but I've tried it on other laptops and some seem to play the sounds for less time (they sound more like clicks than beeps) or the sound doesn't play at all. So I have two questions here: Is there a more reliable beep function? Is there a (simple) way I can play a short .wav file or something similar instead (preferred solution).

• How do I escape a LIKE clause using NHibernate Criteria?

  The code we're using is straight-forward in this part of the search query: myCriteria.Add( Expression.InsensitiveLike("Code", itemCode, MatchMode.Anywhere)); and this works fine in a production environment. The issue is that one of our clients has item codes that contain % symbols which this query needs to match. The resulting SQL output from this code is similar to: SELECT ... FROM ItemCodes WHERE ... AND Code LIKE '%ItemWith%Symbol%' which clearly explains why they're getting some odd results in item searches. Is there a way to enable escaping using the programmatic Criteria methods? Addendum: We're using a slightly old version of NHibernate, 2.1.0.4000 (current as of writing is 2.1.2.4853), but I checked the release notes, and there was no mention of a fix for this. I didn't find any open issue in their bugtracker either. We're using SQL Server, so I can escape the special characters (%, _, [, and ^) in code really easily, but the point of us using NHibernate was to make our application database-engine-independent as much as possible. Neither Restrictions.InsensitiveLike() nor HqlQueryUtil.GetLikeExpr() escape their inputs, and removing the MatchMode parameter makes no difference as far as escaping goes.

• How do I enumerate all monitors in Windows 7?

  I am trying to enumerate all the monitors in Windows 7, and according to MSDN, using the QueryDisplayConfig method is the correct way to do this. All of this code works fine, and returns a couple of arrays, one with paths and one with modes. However, it doesn't have the same monitor ID's as Windows. I am trying to build an array of all the monitors that appear in the Windows 7 "Screen Resolution" dialog. The paths collection return far too many items, and I'm not sure how to tell if it's a valid non-active monitor. Any help would be much appreciated. • Reuse, Rewrite, or Refactor?

  At work I inherited development of a PHP-based Web site after the consultant who originally produced it bailed out and left without a trace. Literally half of the code is ripped from online tutorials, and there are thousands of lines of cruft that, being incomplete, do precious little. Hardly any of it actually works. I've been trying to pull out the usable components, such as the layout (cleverly intermixed with code), session management (delicately seasoned with unescaped, unvalidated SQL queries), and a few other things, but it's very difficult to force all of this junk into place. Further, I don't speak idiomatic PHP, being more of a Perl user, and I'm supposed to be on this project principally for maintenance, so rewriting everything seems like it would take just as long as wrestling the existing monster back into place. As an aside, I have literally never seen anything as badly written as this. Welcome me to the world of working with other people's code, I guess, but I do hope it's not this common in the real world to have such gems as these: // WHY IS THIS NOT WORKING // I know this is bad but were going for working stuff right now... // This is a PHP code outputing Javascript code outputting HTML...do not go further // Not userful I'm looking for the best advice I can get here. • firefox lead dot in cookie issue

  Hi all, We are having an annoying issue with Firefox and cookies. We have the following domains: sub1.mydomain.com sub2.mydomain.com sub3.mydomain.com otherdomain.com We have converting our framework to be multilingual and providing a drop down to change the language at any point during site. The code base is shared across all the domains above. We can not set a cookie across all "mydomain.com" sites, they have to be on each of the sub domains. To get this to work we set a JavaScript cookie when the users chooses a new language. When the page posts back to the server the code picks this up and sets the users preferences to that new language code, (this is all C# and ASP.NET). We have to set the host to be "subX.mydomain.com" and the path to be "/" in the cookie so that it is just for the subdomain and all parts of that domain. This works great on all browsers apart from FireFox. It seems that firefox will pre append a DOT to the beginning of domain so ".subX.mydomain.com". When the code posts back with FireFox the cookie is always null. Has anyone had this situation, (I imagine it is not al that uncommon). I have read a lot of people saying, remove the domain from the cookie, but that can not work for us as we have multiple subdomains that need their own cookie values. Thanks

• PHP DOMDocument Error Handling Problem

  I'm having trouble trying to write an if statement for DOM that will check if $html is blank. However whenever the html page does end up blank, it just removes everything that would be below DOM (including what I had to check if it was blank). $html = file_get_contents("http://example.com/"); $dom = new DOMDocument; @$dom->loadHTML($html); $links = $dom->getElementById('dividhere')->getElementsByTagName('img'); foreach ($links as $link) { echo $link->getAttribute('src'); } All this does is grab an image url in the specified div, which works perfectly until the page is a blank html page. I've tried using SimpleHTMLDOM, which didn't work either (it didn't even fetch the image on working pages).
