  • Does 64bit Windows 8 have the same 75% memory-usage limitation for applications as Windows 7?

    64bit Windows 7 (and Windows Vista) have a built-in limit of not being able to use the last 25% of RAM. You will get a low memory warning when you get close to the limit. Even if you disable that warning, applications will run out of memory and crash since the OS will refuse to allocate memory from that last 25%. That was fine when Vista was designed, when machines had 1 GB of total memory, but is pretty daft for today's 8 GB machines. Yes, the system will run cache, etc. on that extra 2 GB, but running out of memory when you have "merely" 2 GB left.... NB: this has nothing to do with the page file. If you limit the page file to a sensible size like 2 GB, you will still see this behavior. The system will cram the page file to the last byte while refusing to touch that 1/4th of the RAM. Does Windows 8 change this behavior? Is there now some fixed minimum free RAM requirement, like 512 MB, or is it still 25%? Can you actually adjust the low memory limit? EDIT: Here is another older post here which discusses this same behavior on Windows 7. There is fixed 25% limit in Windows 7 and I'd like to know if it's still in Windows 8. Windows 7 / Page File Disabled / 12 GB RAM / 2+ GB RAM free and "your computer is running low on memory" Edit2: Here is another link discussing the low memory warning and how to disable it. Note he claims the limit for RAM usage is 80%, not 75%. It would seem to be correct as you can in fact allocate 6.4GB of RAM with 8GB machine. I have low memory warning switched off here so programs crashed at the last screenshot allocation. With low memory warning turned on, it starts nagging before you can push OS to use that remaining 1.6GB. The question is not "Is it OK windows does not want to allocate last 20% of RAM because X", it's "Does Windows 8 still behave this way". With 16GB this really becomes dumb.

  • Export layer to png file in gimp

    Is there a simple way to export the current selected layer as a png/jpg file in Gimp 2.8.4 ? I did some searching in google, and the export should do it in gimp 2.6 if the layer is the only visible layer, but I can't get that to work for gimp 2.8 The way I currently do it now is that I select the content, and cut/paste it to a new image, then export the image and close it, but a simple export selected layer would be much more easy to use.

    I'm migrating from mod_php to nginx. I got everything working except for this rewrite.. I'm just not familiar enough with nginx configuration to know the correct way to do this. So I think maybe it's getting sent to the static files section and that's where things are being messed up?     Most compression programs compress all files by default. But when archiving a folder containing already compressed files, there is no need to compress them a second time, such as archives, packed setup program, jpg, movies, mp3,.... Are there any compression programs that allow an arbitrary list of type of files to be stored while the others are still compressed ? It looks like Winrar can't.   • Stop Windows 8 from converting wallpapers to low quality JPGs

    This has been bugging me on Windows 7 as well, and much to my chagrin Microsoft didn't bother addressing that issue in Windows 8. Take this image for example: http://mantia.me/goodies/desktops/supermariobros_wide.jpg It's made for retina Macbooks, so naturally it's being downscaled when setting it as wallpaper on my 1680x1050 screen. Windows 8 manages to make it look like shit, see this screenshot: http://d.pr/i/WGFy Is there any way of making Windows always the original image, not some JPGized-to-hell version of it?

  • Network folder image thumbnails taking long time to load

    Our internal network folder can take up to 5 seconds to generate a thumbnail for each photo in a network folder. Usually, only 10% of thumbnails actually display; the rest are default jpg icons. A thumbs.db file already exists inside this folder, so presumably the thumbnails have been generated before. Why do they have to be generated again? The PC is Win7 64-bit. The server is Windows 2003 Server SP2.

I have an MP3 file within my public directory, but the htaccess file is routing the request through the application! Do you see anything wrong with my htaccess file?   • Syncronizing XML file with MySQL database

    My company uses an internal management software for storing products. They want to transpose all the products in a MySql database so they can do available their products on the company website. Notice: they will continue to use their own internal software. This software can exports all the products in various file format (including XML). The syncronization not have to be in real time, they are satisfied to syncronize the MySql database once a day (late night). Also, each product in their software has one or more images, then I have to do available also the images on the website.   • How can I set a minimum thumbnail size with ImageMagick?

    I'm trying to create thumbnails of JPG photos using ImageMagick's convert tool. The thumbnails need to have a defined size (210x159), no blank areas, and the image can be cropped if necessary. Unfortunately, I only have ImageMagick 6.3.7 available, which doesn't support the '^' geometry modifier (added in v6.3.8-3). Is there another way to achieve this in earlier versions of ImageMagick?   • Need to remove borders from multiple images

    I have a few hundred family images and they were all sent to us with borders that I would like to remove. Thankfully the borders are all the same size of 20 pixels and they are all .jpg so this will probably make things easier but im looking for a way to "batch process" all of them quickly so I dont need to open photoshop for each image and do it individually. We do not want to install another piece of hardware to do this for us but we have a firewall running Linux that currently forwards to only one of the internal servers.     i really need your advice folks since i'm experiencing some troubles with nginx & apache2 subdomains configs first of all, there's a site (say, site.com) and two subdomains (links.site.com and shop.site.com) whose files are physically located at the same level of FS hierarchy as the site.com itself my hoster has configured both apache and nginx by my request, but it still doesn't work as it used to both of subdomains point to the main page of site.com for some unknown and implicit (for me) reason :( my assumption is that's happen because site.com record is placed first in both configs?!.. please help me solve this out!   • Automatic picture size adjustment

    Does anyone know of a free utility that allows you to paste into it a graphics file (any type would work for me, jpg, bmp, png, etc) and it will size the file to within a preset size boundary? For instance, if I preset it to resize files to be a maximum of 400 wide by 300 tall, and I paste in a file 500x500, it would shrink the file to fit within the 300 tall limit. Thanks.

  • NSMutableURLRequest returns null on real device, while returning image on simulator

    I was testing my app that I've been working on for past 2 months. Basically it requests for JSON, that contains info about items. One field of JSON file is image_url. When I want to display this image, I need to download it from another server, that needs additional credentials. So it goes like this- In my cellForRowAtIndexPath I'm doing NSDictionary *aucdict = [jsonAukResults objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; NSURL *imageURL = [NSURL URLWithString:[aucdict objectForKey:@"img_url"]]; NSString *authPString = [[[NSString stringWithFormat:@"login:password"]dataUsingEncoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding] base64EncodedString]; NSString *verifPString = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"Image %@",authPString]; NSMutableURLRequest *Prequest = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL:imageURL]; [Prequest setValue:verifPString forHTTPHeaderField:@"Authorization"]; NSError *error = nil; NSURLResponse *resp = nil; NSData *picresult = [NSURLConnection sendSynchronousRequest:Prequest returningResponse:&resp error:&error]; UIImage *imageLoad = [[UIImage alloc] initWithData:picresult]; Now, I just obscured credentials (they are not login:password :)). My problem is, that right now, I get 3 items. All 3 have image on same server. I can get two of them with this code no problem. However third one is problematic, I always get (NULL) imageLoad. On my simulator, everything works fine, I get all 3 pictures. On real device I get error. I tried to NSURLConnection with error and response so I could debug better. This is what I got in my error.
