• What are the benefits of full VDI over Remote Desktop Services?

  We're talking about piloting VDI here, but the more research I do, the more it seems like it would make more sense just to upgrade and expand our TS (RDS) environment. I feel like you can pull off more sessions per core on RDS than on any VDI solution I've looked at. Is this the case? Is there a decision matrix anywhere describing the benefits of using full virtualized desktops over using a remote desktop farm? We need good video performance for clinical imaging - will this work better on one infrastructure or the other? (Does this question have a specific enough answer for it to be on SF? Regardless, I feel like having this here will be helpful for someone in the future...)

• Recommended apps for securing/protecting a new desktop machine install?

  I'm hoping to harness the collective tips of superuser to gather recommended apps/configurations to keep a new desktop clean, virus free, and hopefully lower software rot. I ask because I've recently come across tools like dropbox, deepfreeze, returnil, etc, and I'm curious what other ones are out there to protect a new box. I personally am interested in Windows, but feel free to comment on whatever OS you'd like, freeware or otherwise. Ideally specify the OS in your answer(s). One answer per program please. • Howto return to virtual machine when remote desktop hangs?

  I'm using a vmware virtual machine running ubuntu linux and from there I connect to a Windows XP machine using rdesktop through a VPN tunnel. This configuration is given and cannot be changed. From time to time my internet connection does a reconnect. Then the running rdesktop (running in fullscreen mode) process freezes and isn't usable anymore. Now I want to return to the underlying linux and restart the rdesktop process. But I'm not able to get out of fullscreen rdesktop mode and so I cannot access the ubuntu desktop to kill any process. My solution is to reboot the vmware and start the rdesktop again. Is there a better way to get the configuration running again after a freeze? EDIT: I have no admin rights for the linux system. Everything must be done with user rights.

  It's unclear to me exactly how secure Remote Desktop access from Mac OS X to a Windows Server 2003 machine is. Is the communication encrypted by default? What level of encryption? Are there best practices for making this as secure as possible? I found http://www.mobydisk.com/techres/securing_remote_desktop.html but it's unclear how much of that is still relevant for current versions of RDP and Windows Server. I know I can tunnel RDP over ssh, but is that overkill or redundant?

• Most efficient way to use a laptop like a desktop? [closed]

  When I'm at home (which is the vast majority of the time now in Summer), I rarely use my laptop away from my desk. When it is at the desk, I plug in a monitor through HDMI, a power cable, and a mouse and keyboard that always stay there. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations as to a good dock or product that does a good job of transforming a laptop into a true "desktop replacement." Ideally, it would allow all the connections to remain in place, with minimal effort to take the laptop in and out of the fixture. Thanks for any suggestions!

• Free internet radio station server software with remote broadcasting?

  I am in the process of creating an internet radio station, but the two djs I have for it are not able to be in one place. I need for them to be able to login to a web based broadcasting session that still has full functionality. They need to be able to broadcast thier live shows with talk and music. The music will be stroed on the server. I have checked out the Broadwave media streaming server from NCH, but ti does not have the ability to login as a dj from a remote computer. I don't have any money for this, so I need it to be free. If this is not possible, I need it to be cheap!

• How to reconnect to Remote Session in a script?

  Hello, I need to persist a Remote desktop connection across a reboot of a Terminal server. I'm thinking that it would be something like a scheduled task that would run periodically and check the running state of the session and restart it if it's down. BTW, I did check the "Reconnect..." checkbox on the advanced tab of the connection options, but it still goes down everytime we restart the terminal server. Does anyone have the script that would accomplish the above in a scheduled task, or perhaps another solution?

• ASP.NET MVC: Triggering an action before posting to Paypal payment gateway

  I'm in the middle of developing an e-commerce site that is using Paypal as it's payment gateway. All I want to do is run some code before the user heads off to Paypal to pay for their order, but I have no idea how to do it. The user should click a submit button, changes are made (in this case, the status of the order), and then the user is redirected to the payment gateway. Eg: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult GoToPaypal(FormCollection collection) { //change order status //send user to paypal where they pay for their order } So my question is how do you do application stuff and then redirect to paypal's payment gateway? • What happens to running processes when I lose a remote connection to a *nix box?

  I occasionally lose my remote SSH connection to my VPS. I use screen for long-running processes, but am wondering what happens to the processes I had running aside from those run within a screen session if I lose the connection to the box. When I re-establish a connection to the box, what happened to the bash and sshd processes that were running when I lost the connection? Today I lost connection repeatedly and noticed many more bash and sshd processes than usual. If there are processes hanging around, do I need to kill them? How could I determine which processes were abandoned from my previous session? Thanks for any replies!

  We have servers on which we run tests and all users connect using the same credentials. The server allows 2 connections. What happens often is that one user is already active and the other two users keep hijacking the remaining session. Using query session, I can find out what are the active connections. But it does not list the client machine from where the session originates, which taskmanager displays. How do I get this information from a remote machine? I prefer a command line solution. I had a feeling that the Mac RDC application was not giving me the full story, so I attempted the same procedure from a Windows 7 client. When trying to login, I get this message: So basically, If I logon to the server physically with my domain user and lock the computer, I can then successfully logon from the client. • Need some clarification with Patterns (DAO x Gateway)

  Me and my colleagues got into this discussion early this morning, and our opinions started to clash a bit, so I decided to get some impartial advice here. One of my colleagues reckons that the DAO should return an object (populated bean). I think it's completely fine when you're returning a recordset with only one line, but think it's overkill if you have to return 10 lines, and create 10 separate objects. I on the other see that the difference between DAO and Gateway pattern is that the gateway pattern will allow you to return a recordset to your business class, which will therefore deal with the recordset data and do whatever it needs to do. My questions here are: Which assumptions are correct? What should the return type be for a DAO (i.e. getContact() - for one record) Should getContacts() (for multiple records) even be on the DAO, if so, what's it's returntype? We seem to be having some sort of confusion about DAO and Gateway Patterns. Should they be used together? Thanks in advance

• How to record desktop session with sound on Moblin?

  I have tried to record my desktop session with sound on a netbook running Moblin, but I can't seem to be able to record sound. xvidcap just says error accessing /dev/dsp. Are there some options I should pass to xvidcap? Should I use some other recording application? Update: I am using the latest xvidcap (1.1.7) and have read the FAQ. Unfortunately Moblin' gnome-volume-control looks nothing like what is linked to from the xvidcap FAQ; there is no way to to set or even look at the details the screenshot shows, as far as I know. alsamixer shows pulseaudio is used, if that gives anyone any clues. The device is Acer Aspire One.

  I want to install applications from my Mac OS X install disc, or be able to archive-install from it, but it's back at my house outside my current LAN. Is there a way I can remotely access my OS X install disc on my home Windows XP computer from my Snow Leopard? In my help manual it says I can do remote installs, or use another computer's disc drive remotely, but it has to be with another computer on the LAN. Is there a way to combine my mac's LAN and my windows' LAN? I think it has something to do with making a VPN; is there a way to do that which will work between Snow Leopard and XP, doesn't require additional hardware, and is preferably free? Thanks a lot!

  My small laptop has a small keyboard, which lacks a Pause/Break key. Ctrl-Alt-Break toggles Full Screen mode in Windows Remote Desktop. Without a Break key, how can I enter Full Screen mode? I know I can exit fullscreen mode with the mouse. Maximizing the window doesn't help. This matters more on small laptops because the screens are small (so you need all the real estate you can get) and because the keyboard lacks dedicated PgUp/PgDn and other dedicated keys (so I can't easily use the RDP alternatives like Alt-PgUp).

• How can I make the icon font color on a windows 7 prof desktop work?

  I have C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Scenes\img25.jpg as wallpaper (I think it's a standard windows wallpaper.) The desktop icon font color is white. It cannot be read without heavy eye pain. I want it to be black. I couldn't change the icon font color in advanced properties (ie the good old window color settings dialog) for aero for windows 7 professional x32. I've heard that the icon font color should change automatically to suit my needs, it doesn't work as advertised in my scenario. How could I fix it and rescue my eyes from popping out? • Are Virtual-Desktop Managers good or bad for system resources?

  I am looking at Virtual-Desktop Managers for Windows 7. Right now it seems that VirtualWin is supposed to be about the best one available for use on Windows. I have never used anything like this though and I am just curious from others experience and knowledge, does something like this hog up a lot of system resources? I do not NEED it but it is a nice feature to have when I do want to use it, my PC's performance is more important then using it. So is virtual esktop managers a resource hog or probably not?   I am trying to use a different font and color for the captions on the icons on the desktop. Under Personalize I have been able to change the icon spacing (both horizontal and vertical) and the size of the text. But I cannot change the font nor the color of the displayed text. The font claims to have changed but it doesn't and the color pulldown menu is disabled. I use the non-Aero Windows 7 Basic but I am not able to change the font or the color.

  OS: Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, Microsoft Windows 7 My laptop is plugged to a docking station that supports dual monitors, which I use extensively. I have windows placed where I want them. All is well and predictable with this setup until I un-dock. The moment I un-dock all windows that I placed in the secondary monitor piles up in the primary monitor and it is an unholy mess. So, I am looking for a solution where if I use virtual desktops, one of them can be mapped to a monitor and when un-docked what was there in the secondary monitor stays in a virtual desktop. Do you folks know of a tool or workaround that can address my quandary?

  I am looking for information on how to properly troubleshoot a desktop right click delay in Windows 7 after 3rd party apps have been installed. I did find this program ShellMenuView. This will allow me to disable the context menu items of explorer. I can now use process of elimination to find the problem. Is this the best way to fix this issue?   I'm setting up a new terminal server for our users on Win2008R2 (I guess I should call it Remote Desktop Services now!) When I try to change the location of "Documents" (by removing the default Documents library and adding a new one), to use the file server ie \\fileserver\username\Documents I get the message: "This network location can't be included because it is not indexed" I certainly don't want to make folders available offline, and in fact, I have set the GPO to prohibit offline folders on the terminal servers. What is the best practice for document libraries on terminal server and network file shares?

Default install. I've tried to add shared folder from command line - it does not work. How to enable shared folders or raw disk access? I have created new Windows 8 64 bit template from scratch - I cannot use physical HDD either, and no SharedFolder option. I think this is something about security policy of remote server.
