• VMware - Not printing in order

  I am using vmware workstation 7. Guest is Windows XP. The host OS is Windows 7. When I queue the printer with multiple documents, the printer doesn't print in order. It seems to print the smaller size in data of documents first. The printer is an HP printer. This is what I have tried so far: I have tested this on the host machine, and it works fine. I have tested this on other host machines(XP Windows7), and it works fine. I have tested other HP printers I have tested it another another guest OS Windows 7 I have tested different drivers Thanks in advance for any help on this one!

• Computer cannot detect hard disk

  Details: BIOS: AMI Bios, set primary master to Auto OS: Windows XP Sp2 Memory: 384 Mb Processor: Pentium 3 yeah this one is really very old. And some of the capacitors in the motherboard are already bulging. It detected the hdd yesterday when were trying to fix it and install xp. But today it cannot boot and said: Boot failure. What can you suggest that I would do to revive this old machine. What would be the problem, is it the hdd, the ide cable or the motherboard.

• Unable to Boot from USB External Hard Drive

  I recently upgraded my main development machine to Windows 7. This involved wiping out my primary boot drive (Windows XP 64-bit) and starting clean. Before I wiped it, I did a direct disk-to-disk copy to a big external hard drive I have. While I have been able to migrate most of the necessary files without any problems, I was wanting to boot from it today to check a few settings. I plugged in the hard drive, rebooted, changed the BIOS to boot from USB-HDD first. But, no mattter what I do, it always boots from my primary drive to Windows 7. I do not see any kind of error message or anything. How can I boot to Windows XP 64-bit on this external hard drive?

  I just bought a nettop. It came with WinXP Home. I first installed Win 7 on it. I wasn't that happy with the performance so I decided to go back to XP. I am using an external dvd drive and a Win XP Pro disc. I boot from the dvd drive and during the install get this error: Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer. Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3. • Installed Windows 8 Upgrade AFTER Formatting HD - any way to activate?

  I had an XP system - formatted the HD then ran Windows 8 Upgrade install. Install was fine. It cannot activate and gives me the 'this is an upgrade' error. Is there ANY way to fix this (MS Support call or something?) before I scrap the entire Windows 8 install, Reinstall XP, then upgrade to Windows 8 the proper way? I hate to waste the day's worth of config-the-new-os time if not absolutely necessary. Error was the 0XC004F061 from Windows 8.

• Why does MTP work on one machine, but not another?

  I have two Dell computers, a laptop and a desktop. I reinstalled Windows XP home on both, from the same CD. Then I installed Service pack 3 and ran windows update. When I connect my Creative Zen media player to the desktop, the MTP software that is part of XP recognizes it, and I can copy file to and from it using Windows Explorer. But when I connect the same player with the same cable to the laptop, I can see it in Windows Explorer, but none of the folders that are visible via the desktop are available, and I can't copy anything to or from it. How can I get this working on the laptop?

  I have two Ghost 14 backups of my machine. One for the machine fully configured with apps after and XP install and one of the last update before i re-imaged it (it's XP, I re-image about once every six months). I recently wanted to try simply using my initial image in a virtual environment to do my testing that generally causes me to need to re-image. I used the VMWare converter to convert the Ghost images to a virtual machine to use in Virtual box but they fail to properly boot. They get stuck after the bios loads and windows begins loading. If I power down the machine and refire it it will go to the error screen in windows that asks if you would like to boot to a different mode. none selected make any difference. What are some possible errors I should look for in the conversion process or in my settings for the converter?

  I'm running Win XP SP3 on an IBM R50e laptop, and I just realized a folder named c8c6ac6192a47b59df in the root of my C:\ drive. I can see 2 folders in it named amd64 and i386. These two folders cannot be opened. XP says: c8c6ac6192a47b59df cannot be accessed. Access Denied. However, when I view the properties of the strangely-named folder, it shows 2 folders, 0 files, 0 bytes. I tried Unlocker to be able to unlock and delete the folder, but Unlocker says there are no handlers. What's this folder and how can I delete it?

  I have a Windows XP machine (it is a VM running in Xen) that I would like to backup. I have enabled ClearPageFileAtShutdown by following MS KB 314834. If I cleanly shutdown the XP machine and then mount the drive in another machine (which is trivial since the machine is virtual) I still have a large pagefile.sys. I was hoping that enabling ClearPageFileAtShutdown would result in a pagefile.sys with a size near zero. I have two questions. First, is it possible to have pagefile.sys be deleted, or have a drastic size reduction, at shutdown? Second, can I exclude pagefile.sys from my backup?

• Help with putting Ubuntu on an old laptop

  Hi I dusted off an old laptop from 2004 which has Windows XP. I want to put Ubuntu on it. So, I downloaded the CD image and then burnt it to a disc. I tried starting the laptop and booting from CD but no luck. The CD drive doesn't work in the laptop anymore! So I shared the files on the local server and then accessed the wubi.exe file from within Windows XP, and it proceeded to download something else and install. It then asked me to restart, which I did. I now have a folder C:\ubuntu with a bunch of files in it. How do I get the option to boot to Ubuntu? Sorry, I have never installed a Linux variant before! • Map a drive to root of a server (\\sever) in Vista

  Hi, In Win XP, I can very easily map a network drive to the root of my NAS server. I browse to it in Explorer (\192.168.1.70), choose "Map Network Drive", choose the drive letter, done. In Vista, this does not seem possible. I have to go "Map Network Drive" from 'Computer', then enter the address, but it will only let me map to specific shares (sub-folders off of the server root) and NOT to the server root share. Since my NAS has built-in shares (music, photo, video, etc.) then I would have to have drive letters for all of these, which I absolutely don't want. Can anyone tell me - how come I can easily map to the server root from XP, but not in Vista? Is there something fundamentally different in the networking across the two OS's? Or do I just need to do things a different way? Hope someone can help. Thanks, AT

  I've seen a number of articles about how to edit the hosts file in Windows 7, but it's all about how to open notepad as administrator, not the actual behavior of the dns lookups afterward. I've read that the hosts file is ignored in XP SP2 if DNS Client service is running. I have tried this on my XP machine and it seems to be true. I can see how it is a security danger to have a hosts file that user programs could modify. If it could write to hosts, then any malware could spoof dns locally with minimal difficulty. I'm trying to use the hosts file for testing stuff on my local network without it going to the live site on the internet. At the same time I want to be able to use dns on the normal internet. Mostly though I just want to understand the rules on the newer windows systems. Thanks!

  Hi all, I'm having a weird sort of problem with Remote desktop and that too, only on one machine. If I boot up this machine, and then try to Remote desktop into it, it does not work.( I get the following error: The client could not connect to the remote computer. Remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections. It is also possible that network problems are preventing your connection. Please try connecting again later. If the problem continues to occur, contact your administrator. ) But if I physically log into it & then log out, and then try to Remote desktop into it, it works flawlessly. The problematic machine is Xp 64 Bit, but other systems with Xp 64 Bit work fine. Any Ideas on how to solve this?

• Problem with PPTP VPN and internet

  Hello, I have an internet connection the following way : Internet Modem <- FireWall(not a router, a firewall) <- PC Everything is setup so my pc has an external ip address, and my firewall takes care of blocking bad stuff. I connect by VPN to an external network, so I added a new connection using Windows Xp's "New connection wizard" (the vpn client that comes with Windows XP), it's a PPTP connection so I used all default settings. I put the PPTP server's IP, my username and password and I succesfully connected. I was able to have access to the external VPN ressources. The only problem is everytime I connect to this VPN, my computer cannot connect to the web anymore, no msn, no ping, no web. Is there anything special I should be doing?

  I've got problems on my freshly installed windows Xp machine. I cannot connect to the internet and I've tried various 'solutions' provided to me by the help and support center. Surprisingly none of them worked... Anyways, I've got 3 pc's next to me sharing a lan which is connected to the internet though a modem. The computer I use right now uses windows xp aswell and runs without any problems. I've tried everything on not working computer.   Can anyone recommend an application (preferably usb-portable that doesn't require setup) That really kills a process immediately in windows XP? I ask this because often when I need to use the XP task manager it seems to want to go about it "the polite way" and sometimes crashed programs don't quit or take a minute to shut down. I need a real stone cold killer, not a pushover-could-you-please-quit-now-no?-ok-sorry-program Edit I'm sorry if it wasn't clear previously but I did mean the situation when even the "End process" command in Process tab of the task manager doesn't kill a program, however one of the answers did point me to the "End Process Tree" command which I've never noticed (when right clicking on the process)

  When I lock my computer, instead of seeing the "Computer Locked" dialog, I only see the "Unlock Computer" dialog with my user name populated and my password box has focus. I am not prompted to Ctrl+Alt+Del to first get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. This concerns, as nearly all of my other Windows XP machines do display the "Computer Locked" dialog and force a Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence to get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. I cannot find a setting, registry or otherwise, that addresses this. I am running Windows XP Pro (version 2002) SP3

  I want to install applications from my Mac OS X install disc, or be able to archive-install from it, but it's back at my house outside my current LAN. Is there a way I can remotely access my OS X install disc on my home Windows XP computer from my Snow Leopard? In my help manual it says I can do remote installs, or use another computer's disc drive remotely, but it has to be with another computer on the LAN. Is there a way to combine my mac's LAN and my windows' LAN? I think it has something to do with making a VPN; is there a way to do that which will work between Snow Leopard and XP, doesn't require additional hardware, and is preferably free? Thanks a lot!

• Problem with running a program from flashdrive

  I have a USB drive with two partitions in it, one hidden and one normal. I have an application which swaps the memory and runs the flash application in hidden zone. The problem is that the application works fine on Windows 7 and when run on Win XP, it swaps the partitions but doesn't run the flash applications but just keeps running in the background. I can see it in task manager. But, when I copy the application to desktop and run, it runs with no glitch. I was facing the same problem on Win 7 too, but it was running as required when I ran it using "Run in XP mode" and then I applied a SHIM and is running since then as required. The application is built using VC++ 2008. What might be the problem?
