• Can I run AD commands from a standard PowerShell script?

  I am putting together a script to run post-sysprep. It should check if the machine is on the network, and if it is then it should query AD to see if a computer account exists with it's service tag (we're using these as the hostnames of the machines.) If it does exist, it should delete the account and rejoin the machine to the domain. I have got the majority of the script running, but need to run the following: Remove-ADComputer -Identity $distinguishedName How can I run this from the "standard" powershell environment? I don't want to use the AD module. (By the way - I'm on a mixed mode 2000/03 domain as we are in the process of upgrading to 2008) I'm new to PowerShell so be gentle if I'm completely missing the point! Thanks, Ben

• Moving a VM from MS Virtual Server R2 to VirtualBox

  I have a Windows 2000 Professional VM happily running under MS Virtual Server R2 on WindowsXP. I need to move it to a different PC and the only one available is a Mac with VirtualBox on it. Theoretically, VirtualBox accepts .VHD files out of the box, but my attempts to run my VHD on VirtualBox resulted in failure. The Guest OS just keeps rebooting. I've attempted to get help on the VirtualBox forums, and they said that the VM image must first be prepped for the move, but could not give me any specifics. Anyone here know what is specifically involved in moving a Win2k .VHD to VirtualBox on the Mac?

  We're running a PHP 5.4 application on Server 2008 R2. We would like to connect to a SQL Server 2008 database, on a separate server, using Windows authentication (must be Windows authentication--the DB admins won't let us connect any other way). I have downloaded the SQL Server drivers for PHP and installed them. IIS is configured for Windows authentication, and anonymous authentication has been disabled. $_SERVER['AUTH_USER'] reports our currently logged on Windows account. In php.ini, we have set fastcgi.impersonate = 1. • Massive amount of subfolders and long subfolders. ¿How can I delete all of them?

  Good day. We have a little problem here. We have a share with the backup of all the server's offices, Its a really big share with more than 8.000.000 files. Our users usually give long names to the folders they create, and then make subfolders (long too) and more subfolders... and more suboflders.... We have a new share with more capacity, and with a simpe robocopy bat we copied all the files and folders (some give problems, but we manually copied them) But the problem is deleting them. del command didnt work well when so long paths, neirder rmdir... I'm tried some commanders, but no luck. Can u recommend me any tool that can delete recursively or able to delete 255+ paths? Edited: The SO on background of the share it's NetApp OS. But I can access it from Windows Servers. 2000 and 2003 Thanks.

• In ADUC MMC, Advanced View, how to get Attribute Editor tab on the result of a Find?

  In Win2008 MS added a new Tab on objects in ADUC. Called Attribute Editor it is like Novell Console One's Other tab, or an arbitrary LDAP editor view, or an ADSI Edit style view. Basically it shows all allowed attributes for the object class, and allows you to edit according to your permissions. You need to enable Advanced Options in the View menu before it shows up. This is great, however it only shows up when you browse the directory tree and select an object. If you use the Find tool and open an object Attribute Editor is not shown. How annoying! Especially if your domain has more than 2000 users in a single container, then you almost must use Find to get to an object. Is there any way to make the Attribute Editor tab show up after using Find to open an object?

• What is the simplest and fastest way to transfer large file through a Windows network?

  I have a Window Server 2000 machine running MS SQL Server that stores over 20GB of data. The database is backed-up every day to the second harddrive. I want to transfer those backup files to another computer to build another test server and for recovery practicing. (the backup never actually got restored for almost 5 years. Don't tell my boss about that!) I have trouble transfering that huge file through the network. I've tried plain network copy, apache download, and ftp. Any method I tried end up failing when the amount of data transfered reach 2GB. The last time that I successfully transfered the file, it was through a usb attached external harddrive. But I want to perform this task routinely and preferably automatically. Wonder what is the most pragmatic approach for this situation ?

• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation. • Re-Calibrate Toshiba battery meter with Windows 7

  Hi All. I have a Toshiba U300 laptop. Back in the olden days (circa-2000) you could re-calibrate the battery meter from the BIOS when your battery was no longer reading accurately. My battery was shot, so I bought a brand new one, however Windows 7 still seems to count down the battery life in at the same speed as the old one did. This time, when it alleged 0%, I turned the laptop back on and got another 90 minutes of life out of it, at 0%. Is there a tool or utility for Toshiba laptops that can fix it back to being accurate? I've read the other threads on SU about cycling the battery but that just doesn't seem to do it in this case. Update: After the last cycle, the battery meter now reads 100% but the indicator on the front of the laptop is still orange (indicating not fully charged)

  Hello my dear friends! We have a marvellous squid proxy with dansguardian for filetering and they both work just great. Is there any easy way to limit the total bandwidth usage? I'd like to set the max amount of squid users internet use to 1200 since our total band is 2000 and I need the rest to ensure other services such as voip to work without hiccups related to huge downloads on the "internet side" of our connection and similar issues. • How secure is Microsoft 2007's encryption?

  I've read some various articles about Microsoft's encryption, and from what I gather, 2007 is secure using all default options due to it using AES, and 2000 and 2003 can be configured secure by changing the default algorithm to AES. I was wondering if anyone else has read any other articles or know of any specific vulnerabilities involved with how they implement the encryption. I would like to be able to tell users that they can use this to send semi sensitive documents as long as they use AES and a strong password. Thanks for the information.

  I have a Bacula setup with 9 clients, and it's working happily. What could I check? (Server and client run Ubuntu 10.04, if it's relevant)

  For several years I wanted to move from Windows to OSX. Mainly because back then Windows95/98/2000 were terrible options. Now I have finally put my hands on this. Just when Vista and Win7 seems to redeem all the mistakes from their predecessors. The most terrible rant is the lack of the following keys: PageUp, PageDown, Home, End, Supr Not having those made my first programming day terrible on OSX. I don't regret switching, but somehow I expected something else. So: Have you considered switch to mac? What has stopped you? What is holding you back? If you have switched already, are you willing to comeback? (Now I run XP/Vista/Ubuntu/OSX in the same machine, yeah!!)

  On windows 2000 and XP machines I used to be able to do the following: ntbackup backup systemstate c: /f e:\backups\machineName\machineName-full+systemstate_200101206.bkf This gave me a full backup of the system that I could use to do a system restore, after doing a barebones OS install. Windows 7 has a great utility for regular backups with alerting and all that stuff. It does not seem to have command line support. I'd like a backup solution for my Windwos 7 systems that has the following features: Is free Is open source (preferebly) Works while the system is booted and leaves the system functional (clonezilla is great for offline backups, and I use that too) Gives me a backup that is suited for a full system restore or partial system restore (ruling out most imaging software even if they could work while the system is booted via some sort of shadow copy voodoo) Can work via the command line Compression would be nice, the ability to pipe output would be better.

  My laptop (a Lenovo T410s) has an internal GSM modem (device manager calls it a Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB Modem 9205) that I'm currently using a regular (voice, data, text, etc) 3G SIM in. The data functionality works great through the Lenovo software & Windows 7 but I was wondering if I can use the other features (specifically voice & SMS) through Windows. Is it posisble to use the non-data features of my 3G SIM through my Qualcomm GSM modem? If so, what software is available to this end? If not, where is the restriction?   When I try to trancode a video with vlc using the MPEG-4 codec and a video bit rate, I get the following error : Either both buffer size and max rate or neither must be specified Here is the command line I used : vlc -vvv myvideo.m2ts --sout-ffmpeg-strict=-2 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=2000,acodec=mp4a,ab=96}:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,dst=/path/file.mp4}' It seems that I can't specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec. (If I remove the vb option, it works). So how can I specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec ?

  In need to find the age in days - months - years in OpenOffice. There is DATEDIF() in Microsoft Excel. You can use it to find the difference in days/months/years between two dates. Age Calculation You can calculate a persons age based on their birthday and todays date. The calculation uses the DATEDIF() function. The DATEDIF() is not documented in Excel 5, 7 or 97, but it is in 2000. (Makes you wonder what else Microsoft forgot to tell us!) Birth date : 01-Jan-60 Years lived : 52 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"y") and the months : 4 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"ym") and the days : 30 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"md") One can calculate by below formula, but it is cumbersome to calculate months. Another way to calculate age This method gives you an age which may potentially have decimal places representing the months. If the age is 20.5, the .5 represents 6 months. Birth date : 01-Jan-60 Age is : 52.41 =(TODAY()-C23)/365.25

• Open NetApp CIFS Share

  I have a CIFS share on a NetApp device. I want this share to be completely open to any user/computer on the same network. I don't want any authentication (domain, workgroup, etc) required; no login/password should need to be provided. Currently I have CIFS configured to use "Domain - Windows 2000" authentication and have the permissions on the share set to "Everyone - Full Read/Write" but if you try to connect to it from a machine that isn't bound to the domain it is asking for login info.

  I can successfully access one of our local samba shares, which is on a windows pc (called marina) as follows: $ sudo /usr/bin/smbclient \\\\marina\\resource_library <my password> Domain=[MARINA] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] smb: \> So, that works. I'm now trying to mount the above location (the resource_library folder on marina) to /mnt/resource_library (as a read only folder), but it keeps failing - i've tried a few variations of specifying the location: $ sudo smbmount \\\\marina\\resource_library /mnt/resource_library -o username=max,password=<my password>,r mount error: could not resolve address for marina: No address associated with hostname No ip address specified and hostname not found and $ sudo smbmount //marina/resource_library /mnt/resource_library -o username=max,password=<my password>,r mount error: could not resolve address for marina: No address associated with hostname No ip address specified and hostname not found and both of the above with MARINA instead of marina. • Decreasing lagging on router, while gaming

  I had absolutely no idea where to post this question and get a professional answer for it but here goes... Okay, so I guess everyone whos is reading this had played online, and so I was playing LoL again tonight and my brother decided that now was a great time to go on youtube and start watching a movie, so my ping (connecting from South Africa to EU west server) is around 190-220 average, however it started spiking to 2000 and average was 600-800, so it arised the question, how ther hell can I "kick" him off for the time being I tried reasoning it out with him but its like playing chess with a pigeon, he's studying to be an engineer, and I just cant win an argument with him, so i need to step it up a level... I have in the past used the aireplay method by sending deauth packets but it only helped so much, is there another way of either kicking a peer of the local wifi or decreasing the lag spikes while in session or even splitting the bandwidth equally in 2 or 3,etc What do I do p.s. sorry if off topic, if it is not appropriate, just say which website will be able to help or assist me...

The copy is to be used in Windows 7, what I'm trying to do is work/modify an application that communicates with a DB, this application is hosted on the VM, the DB too, and since I don't want to screw up the stable version I want to know how to copy the VM to my desktop pc to experiment without worries. Now, someone told me I might have problems with the IP 'cause the original will have the same IP, and if I change it, it won't work properly. Is this true? If it is indeed true, any suggestions??

• Is Windows Server 2003 on 96 MB possible?

  I have an old laptop, a Pentium II with 96 MB. I have had Windows 2000 on it for ages, it was slow but usable. But now I have to upgrade since I can't get my USB-wlan drivers to install (the old PCMCIA network card broke). I would prefer to install Windows XP but I have no spare licence, but I do have a Windows Server 2003 licence. Do you think it's possible (and usable) to squeeze in 2003 on this computer? Edit: Unfortunately 2003 simply refuses to install on the laptop. It hangs with an error message (paraphrased) 2003 has detected a problem with your computer and has halted the installation to prevent damage. And then some error codes This happens very early in the installation while it's copying the installation files just after I accepted the licence. So I give up for now.
