  • ruby on rails w/ SQLServer

    - by jaydel
I've heard from some people that RoR doesn't marry cleanly with SQLServer. We have a series of historical, standardization to use SQLServer but if we can push back with valid reasons we can move to another db. One person on the team wants MySql and another wants Postgres, etc. I'm trying to stay out of the religious wars and really understand what the pain point is with SQLServer. We're running the app server on a linux box, and the database will be on a windows box and the SQLServer that we're supposed to standardize on is 2008, if those details help any... thanks in advance!

    - by coffeeaddict
Ok, I installed the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility Components here file:///C:/Users/davids/AppData/Local/Temp/instructions_enu.htm but I guess these dlls are not in this. Anyone know where the heck I can get these? Yes, I'm running SQL 2008 so they are missing because they're for 2005. Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo.dll Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo ...

  • SQL SERVER – Solution – Puzzle – SELECT * vs SELECT COUNT(*)

    - by pinaldave
Earlier I have published Puzzle Why SELECT * throws an error but SELECT COUNT(*) does not. This question have received many interesting comments. Let us go over few of the answers, which are valid. Before I start the same, let me acknowledge Rob Farley who has not only answered correctly very first but also started interesting conversation in the same thread. The usual question will be what is the right answer. I would like to point to official Microsoft Connect Items which discusses the same. RGarvao https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/671475/select-test-where-exists-select tiberiu utan http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/338532/count-returns-a-value-1 Rob Farley count(*) is about counting rows, not a particular column. It doesn’t even look to see what columns are available, it’ll just count the rows, which in the case of a missing FROM clause, is 1. “select *” is designed to return columns, and therefore barfs if there are none available. Even more odd is this one: select ‘blah’ where exists (select *) You might be surprised at the results… Koushik The engine performs a “Constant scan” for Count(*) where as in the case of “SELECT *” the engine is trying to perform either Index/Cluster/Table scans. amikolaj When you query ‘select * from sometable’, SQL replaces * with the current schema of that table. With out a source for the schema, SQL throws an error. so when you query ‘select count(*)’, you are counting the one row. * is just a constant to SQL here. Check out the execution plan. Like the description states – ‘Scan an internal table of constants.’ You could do ‘select COUNT(‘my name is adam and this is my answer’)’ and get the same answer. Netra Acharya SELECT * Here, * represents all columns from a table. So it always looks for a table (As we know, there should be FROM clause before specifying table name). So, it throws an error whenever this condition is not satisfied. SELECT COUNT(*) Here, COUNT is a Function. So it is not mandetory to provide a table. Check it out this: DECLARE @cnt INT SET @cnt = COUNT(*) SELECT @cnt SET @cnt = COUNT(‘x’) SELECT @cnt Naveen Select 1 / Select ‘*’ will return 1/* as expected. Select Count(1)/Count(*) will return the count of result set of select statement. Count(1)/Count(*) will have one 1/* for each row in the result set of select statement. Select 1 or Select ‘*’ result set will contain only 1 result. so count is 1. Where as “Select *” is a sysntax which expects the table or equauivalent to table (table functions, etc..). It is like compilation error for that query. Ramesh Hi Friends, Count is an aggregate function and it expects the rows (list of records) for a specified single column or whole rows for *. So, when we use ‘select *’ it definitely give and error because ‘*’ is meant to have all the fields but there is not any table and without table it can only raise an error. So, in the case of ‘Select Count(*)’, there will be an error as a record in the count function so you will get the result as ’1'. Try using : Select COUNT(‘RAMESH’) and think there is an error ‘Must specify table to select from.’ in place of ‘RAMESH’ Pinal : If i am wrong then please clarify this. Sachin Nandanwar Any aggregate function expects a constant or a column name as an expression. DO NOT be confused with * in an aggregate function. The aggregate function does not treat it as a column name or a set of column names but a constant value, as * is a key word in SQL. You can replace any value instead of * for the COUNT function.Ex Select COUNT(5) will result as 1. The error resulting from select * is obvious it expects an object where it can extract the result set. I sincerely thank you all for wonderful conversation, I personally enjoyed it and I am sure all of you have the same feeling. • How to migrate an SQLServer 2000 database from one machine to another

    - by Saiyine
This January I'm migrating our main SQLServer 2000 based database to a beefier server. Is there any standard procedure or documentation on how to do it? I need to replicate all at the new server (databases, jobs, DTSs, vinculated servers, etc). Edit: I mean SQLServer 2000 on both ends! Edit: Be calm, people, I just crossed the versions from another software I posted about at the same time as this. Effectively, I even checked the wikipedia to be sure version 8 was 2000. Don't need to flame that much about what is just an errata.

  • VMware + SQL Server - sqlserver.exe not using both CPU cores

    - by fistameeny
Hi, I am working on a virtual machine that runs SQL Server Express (as part of Sage Line 50 Manufacturing). The details are as follows: Physical Server (host machine) - Intel Xeon Quad Core 2.1GHz - 4GB RAM - VMDK image stored on RAID-5 500GB SATA drives (7200RPM) - Running Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit - VMware Server 2 Virtual Machine - Windows Small Business Server 2003 - Allocated 2 vCPU's and 2GB RAM - Using 100GB pre-allocated flat VMDK file The problem I have is that there is process that runs in SQL Server that is CPU intensive. On the old physical server that we migrated to the virtual machine from, this would utilise both CPU cores so the sqlserver.exe process would be running 100% on each of the CPU cores. On the virtual machine, it only seems to use one of the two CPU cores, meaning that the process is much slower to run. Question Is there a way to force SQL Server (sqlserver.exe process) to use both of the CPU cores, and distribute it's load between them? Is this a VMware setting that needs changing to allow processes to use both cores?

  • Where are the SQLServer jobs stored?

    - by Saiyine
I'd like to know what is the process a SqlServer job is executing, but I only can find that it calls DTSRun with an encrypted string. After decoding the string, it results is just the name of the job with the user and the password. How can I find what is this job really calling? Edit: I've found a candidate, they could be at the msdb.sysdtspackages, but again, can't read them as SQLServer says the data is binary. How can I read them to confirm they are the jobs?

  • Combine config-paramters with parameters passed from commanline

    - by Frederik
    I have created a SSIS-package that imports a file into a table (simple enough). I have some variables, a few set in a config-file such as server, database, importfolder. at runtime I want to pass the filename. This is done through a stored procedure using dtexec. When setting the paramters throught the configfile it works fine also when setting all parameters in the procedure and passing them with the \Set statement (se below). when I try to combine the config-version with settings parameters on the fly I get an error refering to the config-files path that was set at design time. Has anybody come across this and found a solution for it? Regards Frederik DECLARE @SSISSTR VARCHAR(8000), @DataBaseServer VARCHAR(100), @DataBaseName VARCHAR(100), @PackageFilePath VARCHAR(200), @ImportFolder VARCHAR(200), @HandledFolder VARCHAR(200), @ConfigFilePath VARCHAR(200), @SSISreturncode INT; /* DEBUGGING DECLARE @FileName VARCHAR(100), @SelectionId INT SET @FileName = 'Test.csv'; SET @SelectionId = 366; */ SET @PackageFilePath = '/FILE "Y:\SSIS\Packages\PostalCodeSelectionImport\ImportPackage.dtsx" '; SET @DataBaseServer = 'STOSWVUTVDB01\DEV_BSE'; SET @DataBaseName = 'BSE_ODR'; SET @ImportFolder = '\\Stoswvutvbse01\Application\FileLoadArea\ODR\\'; SET @HandledFolder = '\\Stoswvutvbse01\Application\FileLoadArea\ODR\Handled\\'; --SET @ConfigFilePath = '/CONFIGFILE "Y:\SSIS\Packages\PostalCodeSelectionImport\Configuration\DEV_BSE.dtsConfig" '; ----now making "dtexec" SQL from dynamic values SET @SSISSTR = 'DTEXEC ' + @PackageFilePath; -- + @ConfigFilePath; SET @SSISSTR = @SSISSTR + ' /SET \Package.Variables[User::SelectionId].Properties[Value];' + CAST( @SelectionId AS VARCHAR(12)); SET @SSISSTR = @SSISSTR + ' /SET \Package.Variables[User::DataBaseServer].Properties[Value];"' + @DataBaseServer + '"'; SET @SSISSTR = @SSISSTR + ' /SET \Package.Variables[User::ImportFolder].Properties[Value];"' + @ImportFolder + '" '; SET @SSISSTR = @SSISSTR + ' /SET \Package.Variables[User::DataBaseName].Properties[Value];"' + @DataBaseName + '" '; SET @SSISSTR = @SSISSTR + ' /SET \Package.Variables[User::ImportFileName].Properties[Value];"' + @FileName + '" '; SET @SSISSTR = @SSISSTR + ' /SET \Package.Variables[User::HandledFolder].Properties[Value];"' + @HandledFolder + '" '; -- Now execute dynamic SQL by using EXEC.   • Sounds for build error/success in Visual C++?

On long Visual C++ builds, it would be really helpful to hear some sort of (optional) sounds for such build/compile results as: individual compile error file compile success/failure build success/failure batch build success/failure Does anyone know how to enable sounds for these kinds of build occurrences in Visual C++ (especially Visual C++ 2008 on Vista)?

  • Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$'

    - by sah302
I know this is almost duplicate of : http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1269706/the-error-login-failed-for-user-nt-authority-iusr-in-asp-net-and-sql-server-2 and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97594/login-failed-for-user-username-system-data-sqlclient-sqlexception-with-linq-i but some things don't add up compared to other appliations on my server and I am not sure why. Boxes being used: Web Box SQL Box SQL Test Box My Application: I've got aASP.NET Web Application, which references a class library that uses LINQ-to-SQL. Connection string set up properly in the class library. As per http://stackoverflow.com/questions/97594/login-failed-for-user-username-system-data-sqlclient-sqlexception-with-linq-i I also added this connection string to the Web Application. The connection string uses SQL credentials as so (in both web app and class library): <add name="Namespace.My.MySettings.ConnectionStringProduction" connectionString="Data Source=(SQL Test Box);Initial Catalog=(db name);Persist Security Info=True;User ID=ID;Password=Password" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> This connection confirmed as working via adding it to server explorer. This is the connection string my .dbml file is using. The problem: I get the following error: System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Login failed for user 'DOMAIN\MACHINENAME$'. Now referencing this http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1269706/the-error-login-failed-for-user-nt-authority-iusr-in-asp-net-and-sql-server-2 it says that's really the local network service and using any other non-domain name will not work. But I am confused because I've checked both SQL Box and SQL Test Box SQL Management Studio and both have NT AUTHORITY/NETWORK SERVICE under Security - Logins, at the database level, that isn't listed under Security - Users, but at the database level Security - Users I have the user displayed in the connection string. At NTFS level on web server, the permissions have NETWORK SERVICE has full control. The reason why I am confused is because I have many other web applications on my Web Server, that reference databases on both SQL Box and SQL Test Box, and they all work. But I cannot find a difference between them and my current application, other than I am using a class library. Will that matter? Checking NTFS permissions, setup of Security Logins at the server and databases levels, connection string and method of connecting (SQL Server credentials), and IIS application pool and other folder options, are all the same. Why do these applications work without adding the machinename$ to the permissions of either of my SQL boxes? But that is what the one link is telling me to do to fix this problem.

  • Sharepoint/WSS Reporting Services Integration woes

    - by mhollers
after a number of failed attempts i seem to have successfully installed the Reporting services add-in to my WSS farm. However, I seem to be missing most of the enhanced functionality eg no report library template, no report center site template. the only additional functionality available is the report viewer web part. background: 2 server WSS 3.0 farm with CA (Central admin) WFE (web front end) and reporting services addin installed on 1, and SQL05 SP2 with Reporting services (RS) and all databases installed on other. I have a VM environment set up and have rolled this back and repeated a number of times. I have configured RS within CA and activated 'Report Server INtegration Feature'. Within the 'site settings' I have a 'Reporting Services' heading with a 'manage shared schedules' item/link, not sure if there should be other options? I was of the understanding that to view reports within sharepoint i could either create a new site using the 'report center' template or add a report library to an existing site, neither of which seems available I am at a loss as to what to do, as all online information seems to do with dealing with installation issues/errors, which i seem to have eventually got past

  • SQL Reporting Services - Subreports Broken into multiple columns

    - by devin
Hi, I inherited an SQL Reporting Services .rdl project from somebody and need help fixing some functionality. In each row of the report, there is a subreport. In order to save space the subreport is divided into 3. Such that in each row of the report, it splits the data of the subreport into 3 smaller tables. Right now, it fills these 3 subreports horizontally. (ie. if the result has 9 values, the first subtable will have 1, 4 & 7, the second subtable will have 2, 5 & 8, etc) Is there a way to have it fill the subtables vertically? (ie. the first subtable would have 1,2 & 3) Thanks!

  • SQL Server add primary key

    - by Paul
I have a table that needs to be given a new primary key, as my predecesor used a varchar(8) row as the primary key, and we are having problems with it now. I know how to add the primary key, but am not sure of the correct way to add this new primary key to other tables that have the foreign key. Here is what I have: users table: old_user_id varchar(8) ... ... new_user_id int(11) orders table: order_id int(11) ... ... old_user_fk varchar(8) new_user_fk int(11) I need to get the same results whether I join the tables on users.old_user_id=orders.old_user_fk or users.new_user_id=orders.new_user_fk. Any help is appreciated.

  • Change the default SqlCommand CommandTimeout with configuration rather than recompile?

    - by robertc
I am supporting an ASP.Net 3.5 web application and users are experiencing a timeout error after 30 seconds when trying to run a report. Looking around the web it seems it's easy enough to change the timeout in the code, unfortunately I'm not able to access the code and recompile. Is there anyway to configure the default for either the web app, the worker process, IIS or the whole machine? Here is the stack trace up to the point where it's in System.Data in case I'm missing some other problem: [SqlException (0x80131904): Timeout expired. I've compared the machine.config and web.config files from the .Net directory on the live and test and they seem the same, compared the two IIS setups, also looked at the SQL Server configuration and the only difference is that the live server is clustered on 64bit W2K3 while the test server is on 32bit.

Hello! So... here's my story: I'm trying to create a SQL server data extension (to be precise, I'm trying to get some sample code to run) (SSRS2005). I've done the following: Placed the extension assembly into the ReportServer/bin folder. Placed the assembly into the Private Assemblies folder. Modified rsreportserver.config in, and added the assembly info to the data section. Modified rssrvpolicy.config, and added a code group for the assembly with Full Trust. Modified RSReportDesigner.config in PrivateAssemblies. Added the assembly to the data and the designer sections, specifying the generic query designer. Modified RSPreviewPolicy.config. Added the assembly with Full Trust. The new Data Source type is available for selection, but when I try to view the dataset I get this error: The data extension DataSet could not be loaded. Check the configuration file RSReportDesigner.config. The location of the assembly is configured properly (I think), because I've added logging code and I can see that the constructor of the Connection object is being called. In fact, I've added logging code to every method of every class in the assembly, and as far as I can tell the failure occurs right after the connection object's constructor is called. Any ideas on how I might proceed to debug this? Thanks alot!

    - by phenevo
    StringBuilder query = new StringBuilder(); query.Append("CREATE TABLE #Codes (Code nvarchar(100) collate database_default ) "); query.Append("Insert into #Codes (Code) "); int lengthOfCodesArray = targetCodes.Length; for (int index = 0; index < lengthOfCodesArray; index++) { string targetCode = targetCodes[index]; query.Append("Select N'" + targetCode + "' "); if (index != lengthOfCodesArray - 1) { query.Append("Union All "); } } query.Append("drop table #Codes "); on: cmd.ExecuteReader() I get There is insufficient system memory to run this query when creating temporary table But weird thing is that, when I have 25k codes is ok, when 5k I get this error. Initial size is 262 MB. Lengt of each code is average 15.

  • ASP.NET Session does not timeout on using ReportViewer Control.

    - by Saurabh
Hi, We are using the ReportViewer control to display SSRS reports in our ASP.NET application. On pages where we use the ReportViewer control the session does not time out. The reason for this is the ReportViewer control emits a "setTimeOut" javascript function which reads the Session timeout value from the web.config and pings the server 1 minute before the configured value and keeps the session alive. For example, if the session timeout value is 5 minutes, the ReportViewer pings the server on the 4th minute. We used fidldler to verify this behavior. In addition, if we remove the ReportViewer control from the page, the sessions times out as expected. We also tried using the ReportViewer control in a sample application and observed the same behaviour. Has anyone faced this issue? Regards, Saurabh

  • bulk insert image from relative path

    - by Markus
Hi, I wonder if some can help me out with this little problem. I have the following insert statement: insert into symbol (sy_id, sy_fg_color, sy_bg_color, sy_icon) select 302, 0, 16245177, sy_icon = (select * from openrowset(bulk 'K:\mypath\icons\myicon.png', single_blob) as image) Is it possible to make the path relative in any way? I'm using TFS to deploy the database, so if it's not possible to make it relative with T-SQL, maybe it can be done with a little help from TFS/Visual Studio deploy?

I've used it in the past but, since I can't really understand how it works, I can't figure out how to apply it to this specific case. Can you provide me with some ideas?
