• I'm confused, how do I control cache so my clients can see website edits.

  I host about 10 websites for clients. Every so often a client will ask for an update to their website. It may be a simple image change, new PDF or a simple text change. I make the change and then send them a link to the web page with the update. About an hour later I will get an email back from the client telling me they still see the old page. I will then explaining to them how to empty their browsers cache. What I'm trying to figure out is if there is a way I can tell their browser that I made an update to the website and that it should reload the page and update the cache. I thought about trying a meta tag but I read that they are not very reliable. Also I would still like the page to cache I just want to be able to clear it when I make an update. Is this possible? I'm an advanced front end web developer (HTML, CSS, Javascript) and know some PHP. Cache is just one of those things I don't really understand that well.

  Hi, I wonder is anyone can look at this code and tell me why calling the removeSelectedChild works when called from the same document, but returns the following error when called from the child document/component. Sorry that the example is a little contrived, this problem arose in a quite complicated view, which was using all kinds of custom components. This was the only way I could display it in a way that will be quick for you to compile and easy to focus on the real issue without background noise.   A lot of marketing and content-heavy sites showcase the page's primary content using large text and/or images, sometimes with a slider, containing a call to action for signing up for a service, or downloading an app, etc.. I'm not sure what this design element is called, I got the term hero unit from twitter bootstrap: http://twitter.github.com/bootstrap/components.html#typography I think most of you know what I'm trying to describe... • C++ Implicit Conversion Operators

  I'm trying to find a nice inheritance solution in C++. I have a Rectangle class and a Square class. The Square class can't publicly inherit from Rectangle, because it cannot completely fulfill the rectangle's requirements. For example, a Rectangle can have it's width and height each set separately, and this of course is impossible with a Square. So, my dilemma. Square obviously will share a lot of code with Rectangle; they are quite similar. For examlpe, if I have a function like: bool IsPointInRectangle(const Rectangle& rect); it should work for a square too. In fact, I have a ton of such functions. So in making my Square class, I figured I would use private inheritance with a publicly accessible Rectangle conversion operator. So my square class looks like: class Square : private Rectangle { public: operator const Rectangle&() const; }; However, when I try to pass a Square to the IsPointInRectangle function, my compiler just complains that "Rectangle is an inaccessible base" in that context. I expect it to notice the Rectangle operator and use that instead. Is what I'm trying to do even possible? If this can't work I'm probably going to refactor part of Rectangle into MutableRectangle class. Thanks.

• Looking for a 'pick a-or-b' voting system script

  Apologies: this is my first time on stackoverflow and I'm starting with a question and seeking advice. Sorry. Caveats: I know HTML and CSS pretty well. Javascript and PHP are not completely alien, but I'm really pretty basic on those. That said, I'm pretty sharp and willing to search for explanations independently. Ok, so my question is this: I want to create a site with a voting system very much like the one on kittenwar.com - the page loads 2 random images from a db of some sort and you click on the one you want to 'win'. Ranked pairs kind of deal. Then there is a leaderboard of those images which have the highest win-loss ratio. There also needs to be an uploader for peeps to upload their own images and have them go into an approval workflow, and from there into the db that feeds the voting thing. I tried a pre-made solution ('photo battle') but found it was completely standalone, so trying to integrate it or change any of the options was a nightmare, plus it was buggy. i'm sure there has to be a relatively easy way to do this, right? Ideally I'd like to build my site in Joomla and integrate this functionality somehow. I'd be very grateful for any advice on this. Thanks Tom

• In Google Chrome, how do I bring an existing popup window to the front using javascript from the par

  I would like to have a button on a web page with the following behavior: On the first click, open a pop-up. On later clicks, if the pop-up is still open, just bring it to the front. If not, re-open. The below code works in Firefox (Mac & Windows), Safari (Mac & Windows), and IE8. (I have not yet tested IE6 or IE7.) However, in Google Chrome (both Mac & Windows) later clicks fail to bring the existing pop-up to the front as desired.   I've got a form with two fields, firstname and lastname. The user does not have to fill in the fields. When the user clicks the submit button, a jquery dialog displays with the data the user entered in the form. I only want to show the data for the fields that were entered. I'm trying to do an if statement and use the length() function but it isn't working. Help would be great! • jQuery + External javascript: How to embed videoplayer in div

  I just started with jQuery and so far I have a really good impression of the framework. But now I have a problem that I can't figure out on myself. I want to embed an external javascript file that loads a videoplayer and displays it. If I include the <script>...</script> directly in HTML it loads just fine. But when I try to load it with jQuery it has very different behaviors in several browsers but it doesn't work in a single one. Either the player is not loaded at all or it doesn't update the selected div but reloads the player on a blank page.   As usually seemingly simple things take days to resolve, maybe someone could point me to a solution but after 2 days I give up on the following problem; In html, in a form I have a button that is supposed to trigger loading of data through ajax call: <button type="" class="btn" onclick="getData(); return false;">Show Data</button> in javascript: $(document).ajaxStart(function() { $("#qloader").show(); }).ajaxStop(function() { $("#qloader").hide('slow'); });? and in html div with id qloader is defined with 100% width and height and spinner centered as the background, z-index above other: <div id="qloader" class="myLoader" >&nbsp;</div> Now, when page loads, ajax call is executed to get initial data, qloader div is brought up and it shows the spinner - animated, after ajax call finishes, qloader is hidden by ajaxStop. Next, when I click on a button (show data) to initiate another ajax call, ajaxStart is triggered, but it does not show qloader, it waits until ajaxStop is triggered and then in a blink of eye it shows qloader and hides it. I suspected that ajaxStart is not executed, so I put alert before $("#qloader").show(), then alert would be displayed and after that qloader WOULD be displayed BUT spinner animation would be suspended - no spinning, and after ajaxStop it would get hidden. Without alert in ajaxStart trigger, in subsequent ajax calls div is not shown until just before ajaxStop is triggered. It works fine for the first ajax call, but for subsequent ajax call triggered by click on form button it does not work. Any idea what is wrong with this setup?

• How can I save an ASP.NET IFRAME from a custom entity's OnSave event, reliably?

  I have a custom ASP.NET solution deployed to the ISV directory of an MS Dynamics CRM 4.0 application. We have created a custom entity, whose data entry requires more dynamism than is possible through the form builder within CRM. To accomplish this, we have created an ASP.NET form surfaced through an IFRAME on the entity's main form. Here is how the saving functionality is currently laid out: There is an ASP.NET button control on the page that saves the entity when clicked. This button is hidden by CSS. The button click event is triggered from the CRM OnSave javascript event. The event fires and the entity is saved. Here are the issues: When the app pool is recycled, the first save (or few) may: not save be delayed (ie. the interface doesn't show an update, until the page has been refreshed after a few sec) Save and Close/New may not save For issue 1.1 and 2, what seems to be happening is that while the save event is fired for the custom ASP.NET page, the browser has moved on/refreshed the page, invalidating the request to the server. This results in the save not actually completing. Right now, this is mitigated with a kludge javascript delay loop for a few seconds after calling the button save event, inside the entity OnSave event. Is there any way to have the OnSave event wait for a callback from the IFRAME?

• IE ignores added onclick attribute

  The Jquery code below works ok with firefox, Safari, Opera but not with IE. I kinda know why this isn't working in IE after reading a lot about it but I do not know how to fix it. My understanding (I think) is that this method will assign a attribute of "onclick" in IE rather than an event method. Therefore it will not fire in IE and the href fires instead which in this case is "#" which is exactly what is happening. • How to create a paging scrollView with space between views

Here my question: I want to put a space between the my PageViews, but when it change the page it show the space between the views in the next page. The scroll must stop after the space when I change the page. Someone can help me? • Image jQuery scroller in a container. (like facebook cropper) can't get values of position.

  Hey all. Having a reallllll mind pain. I have a php image uploader which is all good and sotring the file and the jquery ajax is returning the image in an ammended html div with a div set up like this: #crop-holder { width:80px; height:80px; margin:10px 10px 20px 10px; border:1px #c0c0c0 solid; overflow:hidden; cursor:move; } The image is viewing fine and I am using the jquery scrollview plugin: http://code.google.com/p/jquery-scrollview/ I have tried adding a few lines to the plugin to store variables of scrollTop and Left and then replacing two hidden input values with x and y in my page. And then on the returned ajax html in the div I am trying to on a button click (for example) retrieve the values of the two hidden inputs.... Heres what i added to the plugin (i'm no js expert!): .mouseout(function(){ var _m = this.m; var lasty = _m.scrollTop(); getElementById("ycord").value = lasty; var lastx = _m.scrollLeft(); getElementById("xcord").value = lastx; self.stopgrab(); }) Still no luck!! • Adding a button bar at the bottom of ListView upon checkbox select (as in gmail app)??

  I have a ListView with custom adapter. In each row there is a checkbox and couple of textviews. I want user to give option to delete the check marked items, so as soon as soon clicks on one of the checkbox, I want a button bar to slide in from the bottom and stay at the bottom regardless of listview scroll. This is something like the email app behavior of Motorola Cliq and to some extent gmail app itself. I have tried adding a relativelayout (containing buttons) below the listview, which has visibility set to gone initially, but as soon as user checks a button, the visibility changes to "visible". I have added a slide-in animation to it too. It is working but problem is that it is overlapping the last element of the listview which user can not checkmark if the button bar has already become visible. So I tried to set the bottom margin of the listview equal to the height of the button bar when I'm changing the button bar visibility, which solves the problem of overlap, but now the checkbox behavior has gone weird. Clicking on one checkmark tries to checkmark another checkmark in the list for some weird reason. I noticed that this happens because as soon as I change the listview margin, list redraws itself, and during this new call to getView() method of adapter, things mess up. I wanted to ask if anyone has done something like this. What is the best method to add such button bar below list while keeping the slide-in animation intact. Also, What is the footer-view of listview and can that solve my problem?

• What Getters and Setters should and shouldn't do.

  I've run into a lot of differing opinions on Getters and Setters lately, so I figured I should make it into it's own question. A previous question of mine received an immediate comment (later deleted) that stated setters shouldn't have any side effects, and a SetProperty method would be a better choice. Indeed, this seems to be Microsoft's opinion as well. However, their properties often raise events, such as Resized when a form's Width or Height property is set. OwenP also states "you shouldn't let a property throw exceptions, properties shouldn't have side effects, order shouldn't matter, and properties should return relatively quickly." Yet Michael Stum states that exceptions should be thrown while validating data within a setter. If your setter doesn't throw an exception, how could you effectively validate data, as so many of the answers to this question suggest? What about when you need to raise an event, like nearly all of Microsoft's Control's do? Aren't you then at the mercy of whomever subscribed to your event? If their handler performs a massive amount of information, or throws an error itself, what happens to your setter? Finally, what about lazy loading within the getter? This too could violate the previous guidelines. What is acceptable to place in a getter or setter, and what should be kept in only accessor methods?

• cross-platform development for mobile devices

  What language/framework is best worth learning for mobile application development? My specific situation is that I'm very familiar with Java and C++ (I especially love Qt), but have limited experience with other languages. Some options I'm considering: 1) Learn Objective-C and all the iPhone-specific tools I do have access to a mac. The downside here is I'm restricted to the iPhone, so I'd have to rewrite almost everything if I wanted to branch off into another mobile device (or move later to a cross-platform framework). Even after knowing Objective-C, it seems like other frameworks might be more efficient/faster to code in? 2) Use some existing cross-platform framework for development I've looked at rhomobile, but I only have limited experience with Ruby (and at first glance, it might be a little pricey comapred to other options). Appcelerator also looks popular and nice, but it uses html/css/javascript. Airplaysdk looks good, but it's new and I haven't been able to see much written about it (is it worth going for?). 3) Wait for something better to come along How far away is Qt for the iPhone? That would be ideal, but it isn't available now. So what do you recommend? Productivity/efficiency is my top priority, although learning a useful language for the long term would also be okay.   I have an written an Object called Shape which has a Point representing the topLeftCorner and a Dimension with represents its width and height. To get the topRightCorner I can simply add the width to the topLeftPoint.x. I use to rotate them on a certain degree around their center. The problem after the rotation is, that my intersects(Shape) method fails, because it does not honor the rotation of the Shapes. The rotation will be the same for each Shape. Also for that calculation I think it doesn't matter when the topLeft point before a rotation of ie 90 will turn into topRight... I already read this and this Question here, but do not understand it fully.

• JQuery with css3 keydown keyCode = 37 and 39

  I have tested both ways. jquery animation and css3 transition, and css3 is a little bit faster. But i have a problem with the following code: $(document).keydown(function(e){ if (e.keyCode == 39) { var DocHeight = $(document).height(); $('.container').css("margin-top","-="+DocHeight) } }); if i hit twice on keyCode 39 (arrow to the right) than my transition is outer space. Does anyone has an solution for this thing? outer space maybe not the correct word. But the problem is. if i hit twice the arrow key i'll get the last request, in other words... animation is started, and another animation start from the position that i don't want. example: hit #1 margin-top is at 0px and goes to 1024px. but when i hit it twice the margin-top is at 23px, and it stops at 1047px. This is not what i want. It has to stop at 1024px. I hope so.

  I have UITableView. I customized the cell height (increased). I have 4 labels(UILabel) and 1 image(UIImage) and 3 buttons (UIButton). one of the button is delete button. By touching the cell or button(play button) on the image a video is loaded and played. I need to delete the cell by touching delete button. If I touched the delete button the corresponding video is deleted from library . But, how to delete the cell and all remaining data in it ? I am not able to delete the cells or the data in the cells. How to do it ? I used these.   I am trying to develop an extension that will work with Awesome New Tab Page. I've followed the author's advice to the letter, but it doesn't seem like any of the script I add to my background page is being executed at all. • non-cached RSLs in Flex?

  I have a project that is for several customers, the only difference is in the DB, everything else looks the same, except for the main page's text. That is loaded from an external swf file. I created a library, compiled it as an swc, imported it and using it as an RSL. The problem is that if once I've opened the page, and afterwards update the rsl (because changes in the text are needed), than it's already cached by the browser (not the flashplayer's cache but we shouldn't discuss this please!) and the updated swf won't be loaded. If I use it as an external, the page won't even start up (the browser says it's loaded, but it's blank, not even the loading progess bar of flex appear) <local:MainPage includeIn="default" currentState="{MainPageState}" id="Page" width="100%" height="100%" /> this is the code on the main page, if I comment this out, than the whole thing loads, even with the use of the "external" link-type. If it helps, in the design view, I see the component, but I get a warning for the library: Design mode could not load MainPage.swc. It may be incompatible with this SDK, or invalid. (DesignAssetLoader.CompleteTimeout)
