• Hibernate is persisting entity during flush when the entity has not changed

  I'm having a problem where the entity manger is persisting an entity that I don't think has changed during the flush. I know the following code is the problem because if I comment it out the entity doesn't persist. In this code all I'm doing is loading the entity and calling some getters. Query qry = em.createNamedQuery("Clients.findByClientID"); qry.setParameter("clientID", clientID); Clients client = (Clients) qry.getSingleResult(); results.setFname(client.getFirstName()); results.setLname(client.getLastName()); ... return results; Later in a different method I do another namedQuery which causes the entity manger to flush. For some reason the client loaded above is persisted. The reason this is a problem is because in the middle of all this, there is some old code that is making some straight JDBC changes to the client. When the entity manger persists the changes made by the straight JDBC are lost. The theory we have at moment is that the entity manger is comparing the entity to the underlying record, sees that it's different, then persists it. Can someone explain or confirm the behavior we're seeing?

Question 2 : I need tags and their count too to show in related tags, so in first case my related tags class should have following result. RelatedTags Tag Count 2 1 3 1 4 2 8 1 in the second case when two tags are requested the result should be like RelatedTags Tag Count 3 1 4 1 I have get the first thing working by converting a sql query in linqer, but that seems like a hell. so want to know if there is any better idea. • Organizing Eager Queries in an ObjectContext

  I am messing around with Entity Framework 3.5 SP1 and I am trying to find a cleaner way to do the below. I have an EF model and I am adding some Eager Loaded entities and i want them all to reside in the "Eager" property in the context. We originally were just changing the entity set name, but it seems a lot cleaner to just use a property, and keep the entity set name in tact. • Rackspace Cloud rewrite jpg causes Session reset

  This may be the .Net version of this question. I have an image script with the following: ... Response.WriteFile(filename); Response.End(); I am rewriting .jpg files using the following rewrite rule in web.config: <rule name="Image Redirect" stopProcessing="true"> <match url="^product-images/(.*).jpg" /> <conditions> <add input="{REQUEST_URI}" pattern="\.(jp?g|JP?G)$" /> </conditions> <action type="Redirect" redirectType="SeeOther" url="/product-images/ProductImage.aspx?path=product-images/{tolower:{R:1}}.jpg" /> </rule> It basically just rewrites the image path into a query parameter. The problem is that (intermittently of course) Mosso returns a new Asp Session cookie which breaks the whole world. Directly accessing a static .jpg file does not cause this problem. Directly accessing the image script does not cause it either. Only rewriting a .jpg file to the .aspx script causes the Session loss. Things I have tried (From the Rackspace doc How can I bypass the cache?) I added Private cacheability to the image script itself: Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Private); I tried adding these cache-disabling nodes to web.config: <staticContent> <clientCache cacheControlMode="DisableCache" /> </staticContent> and <httpProtocol> <customHeaders> <add name="Cache-Control private" value="Cache-Control private" </customHeaders> </httpProtocol> The Solution I need The browser cache cannot be disabled. This means potential solutions involving Cache.SetNoStore() or HttpCacheability.NoCache will not work.

• python can't start a new thread

  I am building a multi threading application. I have setup a threadPool. [ A Queue of size N and N Workers that get data from the queue] When all tasks are done I use tasks.join() where tasks is the queue . The application seems to run smoothly until suddently at some point (after 20 minutes in example) it terminates with the error thread.error: can't start new thread Any ideas? • Swimlane Diagram Softwares with Expand/Collapse Features

  I've been searching real hard for a software which can fulfill my needs, but to no avail. I have a swimlane diagram which is extremely huge, and almost impossible to model using Visio or any traditional swimlane software. I would need to model both the operational process, as well as the interactions within an application and between different applications. Therefore, without wasting additional effort modelling these separately, I am looking for a solution which I can combine both views together. That is, possibly one which I can expand/collapse/group/ungroup processes/subprocesses together. Take a typical credit card process for instance, a hypothetical description of the swimlane could be as such: Customer submits application form to the bank Bank Officer A receives the application form and validates that it was correctly filled Bank Officer A submits application form to Bank Officer B for processing. Bank Officer B checks credit quality of the customer through Application X. Application X submits query to Application Y to retrieve Credit Report. Application X retrieves credit report and submits to Application Z for computation of credit scores Bank Officer B validates that customer is credit worthy, and submits application to Bank Officer C for processing. The above is an over-simplified credit card request process, and a purely hypothetical one. What I'm trying to drive at is, each of the above processes have sub-processes, and I want to be able to switch between a "detailed" view and "aggregated" view. If possible, add in time dependency of the different tasks, as well. I haven't been able to find one such software which could do this.

• What type of web service should I put together?

  I want to write a web service using Visual Studio. The service needs to support some type of authentication, and should be able to receive commands via simple HTTP GET requests. The input would only be a method call with some parameters, and the responses will be simple status/error codes. My instinct would be to go with an ASP.NET Web Service, but this isn't an option in C# 4.0 and it makes me wonder if I should be using something that's more up-to-date. I've looked into WCF, but it seems like this requires a running application on the client-side - is there a way to query a WCF host by just accessing a URL? The authentication is also an important piece. Developing my own little authentication system seems like a bad idea - I've read that it's too easy to mess up. What would be the standard way of authenticating with a web service like this? I'd love to look up all of the specifics on this and learn it myself, but I really don't even know where to begin. Some direction would be greatly appreciated!

• DataSets to POCOs - an inquiry regarding DAL architecture

  Hello all, I have to develop a fairly large ASP.NET MVC project very quickly and I would like to get some opinions on my DAL design to make sure nothing will come back to bite me since the BL is likely to get pretty complex. A bit of background: I am working with an Oracle backend so the built-in LINQ to SQL is out; I also need to use production-level libraries so the Oracle EF provider project is out; finally, I am unable to use any GPL or LGPL code (Apache, MS-PL, BSD are okay) so NHibernate/Castle Project are out. I would prefer - if at all possible - to avoid dishing out money but I am more concerned about implementing the right solution. To summarize, there are my requirements: Oracle backend Rapid development (L)GPL-free Free I'm reasonably happy with DataSets but I would benefit from using POCOs as an intermediary between DataSets and views. Who knows, maybe at some point another DAL solution will show up and I will get the time to switch it out (yeah, right). So, while I could use LINQ to convert my DataSets to IQueryable, I would like to have a generic solution so I don't have to write a custom query for each class. I'm tinkering with reflection right now, but in the meantime I have two questions: Are there any problems I overlooked with this solution? Are there any other approaches you would recommend to convert DataSets to POCOs? Thanks in advance.

• SQLDeveloper using over 100MB of PGA+UGA

  Perhaps this is normal, but in my Oracle 11g database I am seeing programmers using Oracle's SQL Developer regularly consume more than 100MB of combined UGA and PGA memory. I'd like to know if this is normal and what can be done about it. Our database is on the 32 bit version of Windows 2008, so memory limitations are becoming an increasing concern. I am using the following query to show the memory usage: SELECT e.SID, e.username, e.status, b.PGA_MEMORY FROM v$session e LEFT JOIN (select y.SID, y.value pga, TO_CHAR(ROUND(y.value/1024/1024),99999999) || ' MB' PGA_MEMORY from v$sesstat y, v$statname z where y.STATISTIC# = z.STATISTIC# and NAME = 'session pga memory') b ON e.sid=b.sid WHERE (PGA)/1024/1024 > 20 ORDER BY 4 DESC; It seems that the resource usage goes up any time a table is opened in SQLDeveloper, but even when it is closed the memory does not go away. The problem is worse if the table is sorted while it was open as that seems to use even more memory. I understand how this would use memory while it is sorting, and perhaps even while it is still open, but to use memory after it is closed seems wrong to me. Can anyone confirm this? Update: I discovered that my numbers were off due to not understanding that the UGA is stored in the PGA under dedicated server mode. This makes the numbers lower than they were, but the problem still remains that SQL Developer seems to use excessive PGA.

• Modeling complex hierarchies

  To gain some experience, I am trying to make an expert system that can answer queries about the animal kingdom. However, I have run into a problem modeling the domain. I originally considered the animal kingdom hierarchy to be drawn like -animal -bird -carnivore -hawk -herbivore -bluejay -mammals -carnivores -herbivores This I figured would allow me to make queries easily like "give me all birds", but would be much more expensive to say "give me all carnivores", so I rewrote the hierarchy to look like: -animal -carnivore -birds -hawk -mammals -xyz -herbivores -birds -bluejay -mammals But now it will be much slower to query "give me all birds." This is of course a simple example, but it got me thinking that I don't really know how to model complex relationships that are not so strictly hierarchical in nature in the context of writing an expert system to answer queries as stated above. A directed, cyclic graph seems like it could mathematically solve the problem, but storing this in a relational database and maintaining it (updates) would seem like a nightmare to me. I would like to know how people typically model such things. Explanations or pointers to resources to read further would be acceptable and appreciated.

• Load an html table from a mysql database when an onChange event is triggered from a select tag

  So, here's the deal. I have an html table that I want to populate. Specificaly the first row is the one that is filled with elements from a mysql database. To be exact, the table is a questionnaire about mobile phones. The first row is the header where the cellphone names are loaded from the database. There is also a select tag that has company names as options in it. I need to trigger an onChange event on the select tag to reload the page and refill the first row with the new names of mobiles from the company that is currently selected in the dropdown list. • Is it possible to replace values ina queryset before sending it to your template?

  Hi Guys, Wondering if it's possible to change a value returned from a queryset before sending it off to the template. Say for example you have a bunch of records Date | Time | Description 10/05/2010 | 13:30 | Testing... etc... However, based on the day of the week the time may change. However this is static. For example on a monday the time is ALWAYS 15:00. Now you could add another table to configure special cases but to me it seems overkill, as this is a rule. How would you replace that value before sending it to the template? I thought about using the new if tags (if day=1), but this is more of business logic rather then presentation. Tested this in a custom template tag def render(self, context): result = self.model._default_manager.filter(from_date__lte=self.now).filter(to_date__gte=self.now) if self.day == 4: result = result.exclude(type__exact=2).order_by('time') else: result = result.order_by('type') result[0].time = '23:23:23' context[self.varname] = result return '' However it still displays the results from the DB, is this some how related to 'lazy' evaluation of templates? Thanks! Update Responding to comments below: It's not stored wrong in the DB, its stored Correctly However there is a small side case where the value needs to change. So for example I have a From Date & To date, my query checks if todays date is between those. Now with this they could setup a from date - to date for an entire year, and the special cases (like mondays as an example) is taken care off. However if you want to store in the DB you would have to capture several more records to cater for the side case. I.e you would be capturing the same information just to cater for that 1 day when the time changes. (And the time always changes on the same day, and is always the same)

Right now, the script that generates the suggestions just takes the query text and does the same check every time. Now, I want to be able to pass along additional info so different things are looked for with each instance of a search box. • Updating ToolStripProgressBar and ToolStripStatusLabel along with with an action

  In a Windows Form, I have a search box that fires an event to search a remote database and display some results. The query is pretty fast, usually just a fraction of a second, but in case the delay is noticeable there is a progress bar and label in the form's status bar. When the user clicks "Search" the status label should appear and the progress bar show some progress. Then when the result comes back the label should disappear and the progress bar should be full. Pretty basic response. The problem is, I can't get those actions to happen in that order. Using the code below, I click "Search", nothing happens until the results are displayed, and then the progress bar fills up from 0 to 100. The label never appears. I even threw in a sleep command immediately after the event to be sure I wasn't just missing it, but it's as if the first 2 statements are not being executed. • how to split a very large database on sql server

  I have a 90 GB SQL Server database that I want to make more manageable. It stores stock data from 50+ different stocks from 2009 and 2010, and each stock is a separate table. Some tables have hundreds of millions of rows, and other have just a few million. What I want to do is somehow split the database, so that I don't have a single database file that is 90 GB. What I want is to be able to somehow magically split all the tables so that I can backup the 2009 data once and not have to keep on including it in the backup every time I backup the entire database, however, I would like the 2009 data to be included whenever I do a query. Is partitioning the database the way to go? Will it do the above for me, or will I need some other solution? I research partitioning, but I wasn't sure if that would solve all my problems. I wasn't able to find anything that would tell me whether or not it would migrate prexisting data, or whether it only worked for newly inserted data. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.   Few questions: I'm using CI and JQuery AJAX. In my code below, I assemble dataString, which by default, is appended to the URL as a query string. I've changed the AJAX "type" to POST, so my question is - how do I access dataString in my CI app? It would seem I still have to use $name=$this->input->post('name') Which to me, makes setting dataString redundant? -- I've tried searching but can't really find anything concrete.   I have a SharePoint document library that has a folder structure used for organizing the documents (but also for controlling access, via permissions on the folders). The documents in the library are updated every month, and we store every month's version of the document in the same folder; there's a "month" column used for filtering that will contain values like Jan 09, Feb 09, etc. It looks like this: Title Month ----- ----- SubFolder 1 SubFolder 2 [] Interesting Facts Jan 09 [] Interesting Facts Feb 09 [] Interesting Facts Mar 09 [] Fascinating Numbers Jan 09 [] Fascinating Numbers Feb 09 ... Now, because users will generally be most interested in the 'current' month, I'd like them to be able to apply a filter, and select (say) Mar 09. However, if they do this using the built-in filtering, it also filters out the folders, and they can no longer navigate the folder hierarchy. This is no good - I want them to be able to move between folders with the filter intact, so that they don't need to keep switching it off and on again. I figured I might be able to use a custom view (selecting where type=folder or month=[month]), and to an extent that does work. However, I can only get it to work for a fixed month, whereas I need the user to be able to select the month - perhaps via a drop-down control on the page (and I don't want to create 60 views for 5 years' worth of months, nor do I want to have to create a new view every month). I thought it might be possible to create a view in code (rather than via the UI), but I've not been able to figure out how to get a dynamic value (a user-specific setting) into the CAML query. Any pointers gratefully appreciated! And by the way, I am aware of the dogma that folders are bad, and that everything should just be a list. However, having considered the alternatives, I still favour using folders - if I can solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

• Switching languajes on a website with PHP

  Hello everybody, I'm just looking for some advice. I'm creating a website that offers (at least) 2 languages. The way I'm setting it up is by using XML files for the language, PHP to retrieve the values in the XML nodes. Say you have any XML file, being loaded as follows: <?php $lang = "en"; $xmlFile = simplexml_load_file("$lang/main.xml"); ?> Once the file contents are available, I just output each node into an HTML tag like so: <li><?php echo $xmlFile->navigation->home; ?></li> which in turn is equal to : <li><a href="#">Home</a></li> as a nav bar link. Now, the way in which I'm switching languages is by changing the value of the "$lang" variable, through a "$_POST", like so: if(isset($_POST['es'])){ $lang = "es"; }elseif(isset($_POST['en'])){ $lang = "en"; } The value of the "$lang" variable is reset and the new file is loaded, loading as well all the new nodes from the new XML file, hence changing the language. I'm just wondering if there is another way to reset the "$lang" variable using something else, other than "$_POST" or "$_GET". I don't want to use query string either. I know I could use JavaScript or jQuery to achieve this, but I'd like to make the site not too dependable on JavaScript. I'd appreciate any ideas or advice. Thanks

  I'm trying to move a simple Sinatra app over to Heroku. Migration of the Ruby app code and existing MySQL database using Taps went smoothly, but I'm getting the following Postgres error: PostgresError - ERROR: operator does not exist: text = integer LINE 1: ...d_at", "post_id" FROM "comments" WHERE ("post_id" IN (4, 17,... ^ HINT: No operator matches the given name and argument type(s). You might need to add explicit type casts. It's evident that the problem is related to a type mismatch in the query, but this is being issued from a Haml template by the DataMapper ORM at a very high level of abstraction, so I'm not sure how I'd go about controlling this... Specifically, this seems to be throwing up on a call of p.comments from my Haml template, where p represents a given post. The Datamapper models are related as follows: class Post property :id, Serial ... has n, :comments end class Comment property :id, Serial ... belongs_to :post end This works fine on my local and current hosted environment using MySQL, but Postgres is clearly more strict. There must be hundreds of Datamapper & Haml apps running on Postgres DBs, and this model relationship is super-conventional, so hopefully someone has seen (and determined how to fix) this. Thanks!

  I asked a question a couple days ago about creating INSERTs by running a SELECT to move data to another server. That worked great until I ran into a table that has full on HTML and apostrophes in it. What's the best way to deal with this? Lucking there aren't too many rows so it is feasible as a last resort to 'copy and paste'. But, eventually I will need to do this and the table by that time will probably be way too big to copy and paste these HTML fields.
